I was a Kickstarter backer of this game and as with many other backers the developer did not fulfill his part and provided the promised rewards. To be fair they did develop the game and released it and please before buying check the reviews here and form your own opinion about its quality. However most of the backers also paid extra for promised ports and additional rewards that the developers did not deliver until …

Hunt the Night is an altogether solid 2D action RPG, and while it gets all the fundamentals right and even excels beyond expectations when it comes to its atmosphere, the general gameplay and pacing end up feeling lackluster. 🟩 Pros 🟥 Cons ✔️ Phenomenal sound design and remarkable attention to detail in the environment make HtN a surprisingly immersive experience. ❌ There is some disconnect between the quality of …

TL; DR A dark, atmospheric title with fun level design, cinematic bosses, and a combat system that is engaging and rewarding to learn. Hunt the Night is awesome and definitely worth a play. Note keyboard works well. Story Vesper is a member of the Stalkers, an Order dedicated to the protection of humankind and the defence of the Seal of Night, they are ruthless, and efficient. However, the Order was betrayed, the …

Hunt the Night — a hidden gem that sometimes fights the player as much as the monsters Hunt the Night feels like a game from another era — and that’s both its greatest strength and its biggest weakness. The atmosphere is excellent. The dark-fantasy world has identity, the pixel art is beautiful, and the combat treats enemies as real threats instead of disposable mobs. When the game clicks, it delivers that rare …

It's everything I expected. Been following the development of this game for years now and it delivers everything they promised. There are some minor issues like the ranged aim, a few hitboxes, but everything else is 10/10. Goosebumps from the environment, OST, the pixel art is pristine... Fantastic game!

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Update (06/04/24): After months of silence (and over a year since the last update) the devs dropped another patch with a pretty impressive change log, however their complete and utter mishandling of the Kickstarter and lackluster communication is still a massive issue so my review score will stay the same. I did start a new game to see if anything stood out but after beating the first two bosses all I really noticed was the Noctilium drops have been boosted, enemies have a little less health,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's decent so far, but I really can't get over how SLOW it is. It needs a black screen for every save, for every transition, and it just feels like I'm playing through molasses, menuing through molasses, reading through molasses. It just feels bad. The setting holds enough promise that I am going to TRY to play through it, but... man. Add to that that basically all the text feels machine translated, and you've got me confused and grumpy and not wanting to see any plot line through because I…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Warning: The Game Currently Has A Serious Problem. Whenever You Access New Areas Or Save The Game, There's A Chance The Game Will Freeze, Enter Black Screen, or Disable Your Character's Movement. Were it not for the problem I've encountered above(still hasn't been fixed yet), I would wholeheartedly recommend this game to everyone. The wonderful pixelated artstyle is nothing short of amazement. The level is fun and distinct. Each one contains different puzzles and mini-challenges. Exploration…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I find myself in an oddly middling place with this review. I was left feeling ambivalent, yet want to call attention to the genuine talent on display. The soundtrack is pretty and atmospheric, but most tracks were fairly short, and there weren't enough to avoid repetition. It's a similar story for enemy design, as well. You'll see the same foes in every area with same powers each time (with a few area-exclusive exceptions). Worse yet are when said enemies' most common gimmick are…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hunt the Night is a diamond. Not only is this game gorgeous, but for it's art style and combat, it feels refreshing. The world breaths character. No two places feel the same and the horde of secret places hidden around the game is really exciting when you stumble upon them. I'd love to forget that I played this game, just to experience it again. However, even diamonds can have their imperfections, and for a game that I hold in such a high regard, it has a few hard-to-overlook flaws. Despite…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Backed on Kickstarter, was happy to receive my copy after seeing many delays. Played the game and enjoyed some of it? Honestly felt like the story was all over the place, combat was sluggish, and the music was forgettable. I'm also still waiting on my physical collectors edition which since they have also delayed that till their console version is completed, I'm guessing is never happening. Further, man was I disappointed with the in game NPC for Kickstarter backers. I should have backed Sea…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Janky, buggy and over far too quick. The game has some solid fundamentals, the action combat is fine for the most part, but it misses the mark on actually having fun encounters. The paltry half a dozen bosses in the game barely wet your appetite, and the ordinary mobs are designed in such an hostile way they are not actually any fun at all to fight. The cherry on top is the final boss, an ugly, easy mess that feels like an ascended version of a kind of normal enemy you've killed dozens off by…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →OK-ish game with potential that was never realized. Gameplay itself it fine, but repetitive. The devs failed with itemization. Very few items, and even those are not very exciting. Spells are complete fail. Long CDs, and overall they are nothing to look forward. There are also not that many enemy types, for most of the game you are killing the same things over and over again. A bit repetitive. Story is a mess, and I do not even understand the connection with the last boss. Was I not paying…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good-ish Good. . . ish is probably the best way to describe my experience with Hunt the Night. On the surface it has a lot of things working for it that, in theory are fun, but it doesn't quite seem to know what do do with those mechanics. This game is sort of a shotgun scatter of different ideas that are loaded into it but never really seem to reach their true potential. The combat is sufficient, but the enemies don't really telegraph their moves so much as you learn the patterns and then…

neutral · AI labelView post →Can't fully recommend this game. While haunting and atmospheric in its presentation, It seems to want to have that souls-like difficulty, without rewarding enough combat to compel the player to want to overcome the challenges. There's not enough variety to the weapons, movement is too slow, there don't seem to be that many enemy types...I've been playing for over four hours and feel like I've seen most variations of what the game is going to throw at me. Not to mention the total lack of an…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →really insanely difficult game, really loved the mechanics once you get used to them. not a very bad difficulty curve tbh, backed it on kickstarter and the product was great!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Has some promise, but about 3 hours in I got a hard lock where a simple floor switch to open an iron gate is bugged and simply won't open.. In this state, I absolutely cannot recommend this game..thank god that despite being 3.7 hours in, Steam was kind enough to refund the game for me. Would have understood if the game was in early access, but having a very simple puzzle mechanic lock me out of progressing through the game is not a good sign when it claims to be complete.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really solid mesh of legacy Zelda and Bloodborne. Has a few moments where it's rough around the edges, shown through visual bugs or compatibility with OBS (event though the latter is not that big of a deal for like 90% of people who will play this). There are some puzzles that were a little too cryptic and required looking up (looking at you, sword puzzle in Bloodisfell). The enemy types could benefit from a little more variety too. The boss fights are awesome and left me wanting more of its…

neutral · AI labelView post →Was able to start a nightmare playthrough as my first go at the game. 10/10, would torture myself again. The game is not bad, but it definitely lacks polish. Some weird hitboxes here and there, including lingering ones in a couple spots. You're "bound" to checkpoints, so every time you die (and on nightmare *everything* one-shots) you have to run all the way back. Yet there are some places without a checkpoint that *can* checkpoint you. How about riding an elevator up, then down, and…

neutral · AI labelView post →Hunt the Night is a Pixel Art Action RPG where you play as Vesper, a lone stalker on a mission to take down the corruption in the world led by forces of evil. The game offers a big interconnected world filled with puzzles that will test your brain, rooms full of challenges and enemies that will try to swarm you and allies / NPCs will aid you on your journey. The game plays very well and solid controls, the only thing I noticed was slight hitboxes that were bigger than their intended range,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game. The combat is tight and puts your skills to the test. I had a lot of fun playing. It also has a decent amount of secrets and a decent story. Recommended.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It just doesn't feel good to play, really. The controls lack a certain snappiness that I'm going to demand if I'm playing a Soulslike and using dodge rolls, enemy attacks occasionally have weird hitboxes(hell, your OWN attacks have weird hitboxes), attacking has this weird laggy feeling to it, ranged enemies can shoot at you from off-screen and aiming your pistol with the controller is a bizarrely janky experience where the aim will suddenly default away from the direction you're aiming in to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really enjoyed this game. It's kindof a 2d bloodborne. It struggles at some points where the controls arent quite as precise as I would want and the game really needs a map. Still if you're into challenging metroidvanias this will definitely check that box.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I stuck with this game, but I am so bored by its Skinner box platforming that I feel the need to wake up from this malaise and warn others not to make the same mistake. PROS Nice pixel art, animations, gothic presentation CONS Bugs. Sometimes the menu screens will lock while playing with a controller. You can fix this specific issue by shaking the mouse. Worse, if you fall into a bottomless pit (minus 1 health), you can expect to be dropped by the game into 1 or 2 other bottomless pits…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Stylish hands down, but lacks dramatically in gameplay department. It should also be noted that the technical implementation is lackluster.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm going to keep this short and simple, because I don't think this is a bad game. It could have been Gothic Horror Zelda, but chose to be a soulslike with a dash button.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hunt the Night is the kind of game that is best described as a flawed gem. This review shall be a mixture of review for potential players and feedback to the developers. It will also be long. As a summary it is a game that does so many things right and clearly a lot of love was put into it, but also has some very baffling design choices. To try and explain this, I shall break it down into categories. 1 - The Visuals - The graphics/style don't really require any explanation, if you see the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not perfect, but enjoyable enough. Great visuals, great art, good sound design, enough enemy variety, ambition in the boss fights (though several of them suffer from heavy design issues), decent lore, good combat, semi-decent build options (you have several spells and runes and weapons at your disposal, but you can only equip one of each. this severely limits any "build" you'd like to play. the lack of map could be an issue for some players. the world is not huge, its actually rather small,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is rough around the edges and in desperate need of a map. It was fun, but frustrations piled up.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I finished the introductory dungeons and bosses, and the combat's been pretty fun. Now I have no idea where to go. Characters in the game say to me "If you're lost, go to the Court of the Insomnus," "the Court of the Insomnus will guide you." "check out the Court of the Insomnus." Well GUESS WHAT? I DON'T KNOW WHERE OR WHAT THAT IS. I've been wandering for a couple hours, killing random monsters and talking to everyone I see. Nothing is highlighted and there is no map. I'm going to stop…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Zelda meets Bloodborne but more linear. There's some backtracking for a few upgrades. It's hard, but just keep dashing. Even basic monsters do a lot of damage so tanking anything won't work. Most bosses will take a few tries as you learn their attack patterns. A few I managed to beat on the first go. Others took many tries. A few late stage bosses have attacks that will one shot you, or kill you in a few rapid fire hits. The story I'm not thrilled about. There's some the good guys may be the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →T.L.D.R: Overall, it's a solid foundation of a game, with good combat bones and carried by the art and ambiance, but it's held back by some baffling design decisions, bad mechanics and buggy hitboxes (admittedly rare). This is all I can think of at the moment (also hit character limit, but I tend to ramble). I know my negatives list is longer and more in-depth, but I did overall enjoy the game. It desperately needs some polish though. Would buy again, but maybe only while on sale. I'll go…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Okay. This game is great. If you like Zelda or Bloodborne or even Dark souls or any 2D action adventure with well designed combat, this is an instant buy. Hunt the night does so many things right its an easy recommendation even at its full price. The combat is satisfying, the world overall is great and the zones are too. The music gets the job done, for what the game tries to achieve, so again.. the package is really great overall. It does have some flaws, that prevent it from being a…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very simplistic and shallow, not really engaging. The game has style but little substance. The gameplay loop is simplistic with odd animations and unbalanced weapons/skills.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game with good gameplay, beautiful pixel art and a nice story. It is difficult but rewarding!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →+great visual style +intriguing bargain basement bloodborne world -it was incredibly hard keeping track of areas. not quite enough variety to the cave regions to easily remember where to go (i'm looking at you later zones) -combat felt fairly unrewarding. I wouldn't say its bad combat, its just...exhausting. -Boss fights especially feel grindy -while it looks fairly open world, its for the most part a linear run the environs. -lots of quest pieces don't have a clear use situation. you've just…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A pretty fun action adventure game Its a mix on zelda in terms of gameplay and bloodborne in terms of aesthetic and weapon variety Liked the sense of progression the game gives when you go to a new area and upgrade There a decent amount of side stuff adn hidden items to find Like the gameplay overall but there some jank I got stuck in the map 2 times but that it no crashes on technical side The story is decent but nothing very special Its a decent game ig you get on sale
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Recommended (with major caveats) Playtime: ~7.8 hours (1.2 of those were being lost in the beginning.) Hunt the Night is a game that absolutely nails its core combat and atmospheric visual design. The combat is responsive, snappy, and encourages a fast-paced, engaging loop of melee and ranged attacks. Each weapon type has a unique feel, dodging is responsive with generous invincibility frames, and the “Dark Powers” system tied to a stamina-like bar works well to keep combat fluid. I especially…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sorry, but i cant recommend this game. Even though I think its alright there is just too much jank and optimization that it just frustrates me in a very specific way. Additionally, after the first area there's almost no direction, which isn't bad on its own but when things are poorly communicated I don't know if there are things I just cannot do, if I need an item for something, or a skill to defeat an enemy. Its frustrating and I just think about how I could just play Hyperlight Drfiter again.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awesome game loop, fluid combat, cool enemies and bosses, beautiful pixel art, story RICH and it's presentation kept drawing me forward deeper into the world. Hope they keep making games in this vein b/c there is so much to like here. From a please make more of this please criticism perspective, It needs about 10% more polish on the dialogue front, some more content/upgrades/progression instead of reskins (more throwables would be easy), and another look at some of the puzzles as there are a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i don't understand all the negative reviews. in my book, it's a 9/10 game for me. My only complaint is the text is a bit too small for my eyes and there's some slow down when I move to a new area. that's all.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So far in my gaming of 2023 this is my niche pick for GOTY. - LOZ + Bloodborne vibe is nailed perfectly. Straightforward game with decent controls. (Recommend Controller) -Game's story is probably what you've seen before with other souls like games. But I'm a sucker for monster/vampire/demon hunting aesthetics. - The Gameplay has a very.... interesting difficulty graph. Depending on your chosen weapon and upgrade purchased. You can free switch to what ever you feel like you need but there…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you want my quick score, I give this game a 9/10. The setting was phenomenal, the pixel art was absolutely gorgeous, and the combat was really fun and challenging in some sections. All of the bosses felt unique and had their own thing going on, some of them were harder than others and some were super easy. I didn't focus 100% on the story, but from what I was able to gather through the lore spread out in the game it's a good story which ends with your choice on what to do with the world. The…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For a $20 game, it's fine. The game is very light on content, but the game is also took a day to 100% with the hardest boss being the second boss. I also found it fascinating that only 11% of the people that bought this got to an ending which might imply it's hard, but I'd say it's really just the second boss. Combat is fine when you can just dodge and outrun most hit boxes, however weapons feel pretty pointless over using great swords since its high damage and not horridly slow. Exploration…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very little direction on where to go after the main town. Some encounters with waves of enemies could be endless or not, it's impossible to tell. Navigation without a map is painful. Combat is repetitive and overly punishing with very weak heals at the start.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hunt the Night - 8.5/10 This is a fantastic top-down Bloodborne meets Zelda-like! Not for the faint of heart, as the boss battles can be mind bendingly excruciating. Lots of neat little puzzles that actually trigger a cerebral response rather than just a paint by number puzzle system that could be cut and pasted into any dungeon in the game. Also a fair amount of collectibles like, weapons, armors, spells, gun upgrades, etc… to collect. The game’s achievements will actually steer you towards…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played a fair amount of hours with a friend until we got four fragments (that's why I've got so little time on my account) and I can certainly say that this game has every ingredient needed to make you feel immersed in Medhram. The fast gameplay, the pixel art and visuals (Albion truly surprised me) and every track of the score made me enjoy it a lot. Can't wait to finish it on my own :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game definitely doesn't deserve it's mixed review. It's a pretty darn well made game that's held back by some clunkiness and QOL issues. Hunt the Night is a hardcore top down action rpg, imagine mixing the Legend of Zelda with Bloodborne's setting and Castlevania looking characters. I won't beat around the bush, this game is tough as nails and you will die a lot, so if you're after a more casual romp, please turn around immediately. Combat is all right, it can be clunky and frustrating…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played only for one hour for now and only finished the first boss, so I'm gonna update my review later, but this is my first experience. This top-down 2D action game features a strong female character set in a vibrant and atmospheric world, with visuals and a soundtrack that are absolutely stunning. The game's vibe is a mix of Castlevania, Dark Souls, and Resident Evil 1, which creates an exciting and immersive experience for players. While I've only played the game for an hour, I can…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to be able to recommend this game. The pixel art is great, the environments are gorgeous (if a bit too busy at times), and the story is good enough. I was interested in uncovering the story and lore of the world, even if the dialogue was a bit rough at times. Most of my complaints about the game were minor and not unexpected with a dev team's early/first work. Until about 2/3s of the way into the game when I reached Aurel, Gift of the Weavers. That boss fight was extremely…
