Jump scares substituting for real scares, no good kills, and the 'demon' is not that scary. Machete's down for this one sadly. Makes me wonder about the fate of the later sequels.

negative · AI labelView post →Director Jacob Chase says ‘INSIDIOUS: OUT OF THE FURTHER’ didn’t need to be rated R to be really scary. “The restraint you need to make a PG-13 movie actually requires you to hide more and show less. I think that can be scarier a lot of times in a supernatural horror film.”
neutral · AI labelView post →Marathoned the entire Insidious franchise for the first time this week as a bit of mental vacation and it is absolutely wild that the 5th movie is not only the best entry in the series, but legit one of the best direct sequels I’ve ever seen. I dug the *hell* out of The Red Door

There are some thematically fucked up twists, and the key demon is pretty novel. Felt they could’ve gone further (heh) with the horror and lore though. 1/2
