Metroidvania tag is misleading, it's just a linear platformer. It is decently challenging and fun, but you can certainly see that most of the effort was spent on post-production and art rather than the core gameplay. There is nothing to explore and nothing to collect, levels are way to large for whats in them, you have a stamina system that is unused, etc. etc. All core pieces are there for a good game, it just …

It's incredibly pretty. The level design is good. It's so close to being a good game - but the movement feels sloppy. Running feels slow, ledge grab mechanics feel off, the axe swings don't feel satisfying Minor QoL gripes too, like how quick saving takes a couple seconds, no chest/item tracker, and there's no fast travel (as of the part of the game I'm at - maybe it unlocks later?). The art direction clearly has a …

Itorah is a pretty basic "action" platformer, that isn't a "bad" game, it just isn't a great one either. If you haven't played this type of thing recently and aren't fatigued by exposure to the genre, then it's...okay, or if you're relatively new to the genre it's a relatively pleasant (ish) addition. But having just played Blasphemous 2, and having previously done games like Hollow Knight / Deaths Gambit and the Ori tittles, this feels like "my first bland action platformer" and a step or two…

I'm reading a lot of negative reviews. I just now beat the game and would like to recommend playing the game a "certain way" to get the most fun. Before that, the soundtrack is incredible. Graphics are nice too (could use more lighting here and there, and it plays great. Story is eh. As a PLATFORMER- it's really fun with some excellent platforming throughout, some of which is really challenging but (mostly) fair. (see my recommendation below. As an ACTION RPG- meh. Very meh. This game had really great visuals and intriguing character designs but the frame delays on swings, animation recovery, and MOST OF ALL stamina system really ruined my experience with the game. I can't understand why the devs tied some basic atttacks and traversal to the stamina. The maps were too huge to be limiting the traversal and running to stamina. And its ashame because they clearly put a lot of effort in the design of everything but I was too frustrated to really bask in it

---see where this game landed on my Metroidvania tier list beneath this review!--- This is narrowly recommended. It's linear in the same way that something like Tales of Kenzera: Zau is. Zau is a more impressive overall game with fun movement but at least in Itorah I'm not having to deal with Zau's combat system in repetitive combat rooms. Character handling in Itorah does feel a little clunky though. Itorah is an alright adventure platformer, but not very good at being a…

The game is absolutely gorgeous, but it fails to deliver a full Metroidvania experience. The gameplay is often just platforming or killing the same types of mobs, which often are just more annoying than anything. Farther in the game, the abilities come together, but the control of the character isn't very fluid, and downright frustrating at times. The requirement to hold down a key/button to do things that should be instantaneous is poor design. Lack of fast travel makes it very annoying to…

I know this is a Steam review, but I want to start off saying: Do NOT buy this game on Switch! I originally picked it up there because I typically play Metroidvania's on handheld and I like the OLED screen, but the game runs at like 15FPS and it's so choppy that I legitimately started to get a headache. With that said, this game is okay. It's nothing spectacular, but it runs great, especially at 140FPS and the graphics are a nice drawn aesthetic. If you're looking for a low-key, average…

It's so weird when the gameplay in the first five minutes of a game reveals a lack of understanding of the fundamentals of game design. So often it is impossible to tell the background from the foreground. There are mushrooms you can jump on and identical-looking mushrooms that are merely part of the background. The delineation between terrain and extraneous detail is often nonexistent. The game teaches you how to slide (holding right trigger and then down) before it teaches you how to just…

I recently finished playing through Itorah, a side scrolling action platformer. It's been on my list for a while. The game is beautiful, the story and art are influenced by Aztec, Incan and Mayan art and culture. There's no voice acting, but each NPC feels different. There's little backtracking, and in the areas you do travel a lot there's usually a new path you can take through it. I enjoyed my time with the game. The mechanics are fun and varied, and the boss fights are all different and…

Itorah is a graphically beautiful game. With its bright colors, the game looks simply fantastic and the characters with their fantasy language are also very lovingly made. Nevertheless, I cannot recommend the game. The first three hours of play time are almost too easy. Then the game suddenly becomes very difficult. As others already pointed out, this game has little to offer past its looks and it ends up being boring. The platforming is bland, the levels are too long and yet offer no challenge because you can tank your way through most things except the final boss, the character movement is awkward... You can't even say it's geared toward kids because a kid would get bored before long at how repetitive it is. The level design often gets you running around completely empty stages or a few pretty uninteresting enemies and it gets pretty boring pretty quickly. The game is also of decent length. Those are the only positives. The rest of it is just kind of boring and janky. You have 1 weapon throughout the game, and theres only a single 3 button basic attack and then a charged swing you'll never use bc its too slow. So you just attack with 1 attack from start to finish. I have to unfortunately agree with many others here, the game is wonderfully made, however it makes the cardinal sin of just being kinda boring and slow paced. its beautiful and the artwork and animations are top notch, but the controls feel a bit clunky and stiff and combat is too simple and doesn't offer enough. This is a light non-recommend rather than an emphatic one. The graphics are gorgeous but that can only go so far. The movement is rigid, at times clunky. Plus, there is no real incentive to beat enemies (just run by them) as most of the best money sources are in chests, especially in the last dungeon, no point, skip enemies. Anyway, if movement could be improved and the layout of the map expanded and more interesting, this could be a solid game. It has the look of a metroidvania but it's very…

This game annoys the hell out of me. The art is excellent, I'll say that right at the start. This game looks great, and narratively it seems like it might have some mildly interesting ideas going on. But all of that falls away in just how underbaked it is as a mechanical experience. The level design is fine, but your jumps carry just a bit too much of your ground momentum, with not quite enough ability to correct your airspeed once you're up, so your platforming intuition is near-worthless -…

Overall a good game, got all but one achievement (the true speedrun achievement) in my first playthrough within less than 10 hours - I guess cutscenes do not contribute to the ingame timer. BUT THE CONTROLS ARE ABSOLUTELY AWFUL!!! Some levels - especially the ones where you had to jump or run away - will be haunting my nightmares for a long time. A definitive non-recommendation. Itorah may grab your attention with inspired visuals and the occasional very low sale price, but once acquired, it does nothing to retain it. On the contrary, it soon displays some aggravating qualities that, in my case, made me put the controller down for good. There is some very good use of the parallax effect to create a sense of depth, and a few spectacular set pieces. The story is OK, I guess, but the pace of its telling is awkward. I enjoyed the game at first, the art is incredible, and even let the deplorable controls slide, hoping that skill progression would make the controls easier...unfortunately not. No skill can make up for the core mechanics of the game being utterly broken. It's repetition of enemies, complete lack of story, and poor gameplay make it a chore after about about 2 hours.

I've now passed this game, and while it did pick up in both combat and story, its very sad it took 75% of the game to get there. most of the issues mentioned in other negative reviews seem to echo my concerns, level design is long and predictable not very exciting. monsters seem they should be more plentiful and combat seems muted. So thats the bad bits. The good bits are animations were overall good, sound and music were enjoyable as well as the look of the levels. if i had to give this an…

I think this is the lowest recommendable for a metroidvania. Mobility is bad because it uses acceleration instead of flat speed. Upgrades are quite basic, the story is not that good either. There are far better options to play, still I think it is acceptable.

A fun exploratory platformer with an interesting setting. It's not particularly difficult either, which may or may not be a plus depending on your play preferences.

ITORAH looks amazing. The art and atmosphere are easily the best part of the game. The combat and controls are okay, but nothing really stood out. It’s also pretty easy, so the bosses didn’t feel that rewarding to beat. The characters and dialogue didn’t grab me either, and I kinda stopped caring once I reached the town. Beautiful game, just didn’t keep me interested for long. I got it on a 90% sale, so for 1.99€ I’d say it was worth it.

Pros: - Graphics: Specifically the backgrounds; there is some really nice looking environments. That said, the best environments are very clearly inspired by the Nausicaa Valley of the Wind movie (specifically the cave from early in the movie), Secret of Mana poster art and likely some other stuff. Which means: Cons: - Graphics: While there are some visually stunning areas, there are also a few that simply don't hit any mark. Taken together, the whole doesn't feel like there is a strong…

Just beat the game. Says I played it in 12hrs? But doable in 8 (i left it logged on a few times) -beautiful graphics -fun animations -decent storyline Bottom line, is it worth $20? No, maybe $10 maximum. Not sure why its getting negative views, its not bad. Not great either.

This game is probably one of the most underrated Metroidvanias between the ones that are very well made, there are enough kind of interesting enemies to keep the interest going and they are more and more well placed the more you go forward in the game, and all the bosses are awesome (the fourth one, that is more like three minibosses, is not very difficult but interestingly parkourish and probably made so you let your guard down for the ones after that, so don't feel disappointed enough to…

I like the art style and the gameplay is pretty good, but the controls are a nightmare and I don't understand how games are still being released on PC in the 2020s without even the most basic mouse support

Played on OG 512 steam deck without issues. This game seems to have a bad rap but it in fact is a very very good game, not just eye candy! Highly recommend this Metroidvania! Once you get the hang of the movement it will be second nature. Looking for a fun rewarding Metroidvania then you found it!

A chase scene 5 hours into the game has you performing pixel perfect jumps. I you move faster than the entity chasing you it catches up, it slows down for you but not by much, It's designed to make some jumps pixel perfect no matter what. The developers have had years to change this but they have not.

What a shame really! This game looks absolutely beautiful but don't let that fool you, the world is empty and you are going to be encountering the same enemies from the beginning all the way until the end. Only one different variety of enemy per world. Maps are huge with no secrets, no rewards for exploration and the movement is pretty bad. There's a lot more but I'm not a journalist, just trust and pass on this one, very boring too and the music sucks. Overall- 3/10

Absolutely love it. It's a metroidvania lite. Every side path is pretty much advertised as such. There's a waypoint marker telling you where to go. I love this kind of game. Amazing music and visuals and the combat can feel sort of slow at times, but the enemies are suited for it and you get into a nice rhythm. The upgrades are fun too. Overall I am loving the game. I'm in the final area now. Edit: just completed it and really enjoyed it. Great game!

Quite a fun metroidvania that feel longer than it really is (in a good way) good puzzles and platforming with only a handful of frustrating moments. Well forth both your time and money.

Itorah is an example of a game that is far more artistic than it is actually good. The visual style of this game of absolutely beautiful, the soundtrack is quite nice, but that's about all that's actually good about this game. The gameplay is bland, basic, unchallenging and incredibly boring. It feels unoriginal, the platforming isn't tight enough to feel satisfying, the enemies are boring to fight, and a lot of the levels are large and very empty. It's a beautiful game to look at, but an…
