What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 94 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (120 of 130 positive).
Players praise JEF as a surreal, trippy, and visually creative experience. [1][2][3] Some find the game's performance and camera movement cause motion sickness. [4][5] A few reviewers note the game is short but worth the price. [2][6][7]

The performance is bad, but it isn't my main issue. It just looks boring and washed out, and it's random for the sake of being random. Maybe it was a mistake to play Lavender first, but that game was just so crisp visually and very coherent in its eclectism. JEF is a mashup of ugly assets covered by distance fog. Where Lavender had a underlying message, JEF is just trying its hardest to simply weird you out with …

this game is fantastic, for a 4$ price tag there is no reason not to pick it up. The art is great, you can tell that the dev has enough built up assets and knowledge by this point that the world is truly unique and fun to look at, I would often find myself stopping and looking at different creatures or the design of the environments. The story is surreal but cohesive and is all tied together in the end. The game …

I had so much fun with this game. On the surface it seems like a just some crackhead fever dream, but once you get into you'll realize there's so much more to it. It is extremely comedic yet has such a powerful story. And the music score drives the whole bus. Genuinely a masterpiece of a game. And it might not be for everybody but it was quite a top tier experience for me.

60 of 135 · most liked firstJEF is the most excellent game in the entire universe, honestly, it was a god send. I am sure my wife and children would have enjoyed this game very much, if were not for their untimely death, by my hands. This was a masterpiece if I have ever seen one. 10/10 would highly recommend.

However, it does have a charm about it and still manages to be quite playable for a while. #C64GameOfTheDay #Commodore64 #C64

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →That was closer than i expected it to be, but JEF dominated large periods of the game and were worthy winners. Great header from Carlinhos Junior and that came moments after Thonny Anderson saw a volley cannon off the bar, Anderson guilty of wasting a couple of chances. We get the Chiba Derby back.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It’s #2sday again and I have Starbase Defence and Astral Attack by Jef Gamon. Effectively the same game it was released in 1983 by Anirog and then later licensed to Omega Software. Missile Command mixed with Galaxian kind of describes this game. #Commodore64 #C64 #Retrogames
neutral · AI labelView post →JEF is a fascinating piece of surrealist nonsense, and while I haven't nearly finished it, I need to point out: it can make you very, very motion sick. I've never personally had a problem with motion sickness before outside of VR, but JEF's camera movement has a rotation and momentum that causes extreme discomfort. Beyond this issue, it's actually pretty neat, but I can't recommend it in this state.

If lavender island was an unsalted saltine with ground cinnamon, this game would be a glass of the nectar-thickened liquid that they give hospital patients with dysphagia (lemon flavored). In summary, Jeremy please finish soul injector commando I beg you.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game didn’t just blow my mind—it practically kicked down my door, looked me in the eye, and whispered, ‘I exist solely to please you.’ The graphics were smoother than silk on a slip-n-slide, the game-play so tight it felt like the controller was reading my soul. By the time the boss battle hit, I swear the game was metaphorically on its knees, begging to show appreciation in ways no T for Teen rating could ever allow. It didn’t just want to entertain me—it wanted to worship me. I’ve never…

Basically JEF + Poland, maybe Czechia + Romania. That group could bring Western Ukraine under its wing without NATO approval.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It pains me to give this one a negative because I really do adore Jeremy Couillard's work so so much...but JEF not only runs terribly compared to his later titles but also just isn't as inherently compelling to me either. The messages it seeks to deliver come up at rather random moments that don't really gel well with the game, some of the sections ran so poorly that it's a wonder I managed to even complete them, and the characters aren't as fleshed out either. That last part would be something…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Let's start off by saying that this appears to have been developed, directed, and pretty much everything done by one person. That's pretty outstanding, and it shows; some good, some bad ways. Some of the most creative and surreal work I've seen in a game, period - it's not afraid to go "there" wherever "there" is. The skrokalajar (or however it's spelled), the race, and final moments are just astounding. The game also seems to promote an anti-capitalist message - which is somewhat ironic…

neutral · AI labelView post →What a wild ride. It's more an experience and work of art than a game. I love the graphics and sound design. It's surreal, trippy, colorful and very chaotic on the surface, but it has a lot to say about the absurdities of society and being alive these days... if you take the time to explore it. The camera movements and controls with mouse and keyboard are sometimes borderline annoying, but fortunately, the time spent in this simulation of oddities is quite short and the game mechanics are very…

neutral · AI labelView post →2-0 is a great way to start off, but it's hard to get anything from this game. JEF didn't do much attacking, our defense was a bit scattered, with the majority of Iwaki's attempts going wide. I'm not one for stats, but 21 shots with 18 off target (2.36 xG)-that's some divine intervention (thx wind).

I thought that some people might do the same, so I'm leaving this commentary here that JEF was my favourite out of the 3. Of course, none of them have the length or depth of Lavender Island because they are way smaller projects, but it's a fun time if you enjoy the very unique artstyle and psychedelic designs.
