What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 184 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (286 of 337 positive).
Players find the game cute and relaxing, with a charming art style and soothing music. [1][2][3] Some reviewers feel the gameplay is repetitive and the frogs are just color swaps. [4][5][6] Many players think the game is not worth its full price, comparing it to a mobile game. [7][8][9]

Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge is a cozy creature collector game where you start and maintain frog rescues and watch little frogs do silly things. It saddens me to give such a heartfelt game a negative rating, but unfortunately, I just didn't have much fun with this. It's clearly a passion project, and while it is cute, the gameplay mostly involves sitting around and waiting for frogs to show up. Customizing the refuges …

I want to state that I truly don't think this is a bad game. This is one of those scenarios where I wish there was a neutral rating on Steam, and I think overall, the positives outweigh the negatives. However, I ultimately don't think it's worth the price tag for what feels like a game created with mobiles in mind, and should maybe be a little cheaper. Positives: o The overworld frogs are really cute! It's cute to …

Playing this game makes me feel safe in a way I haven't felt in months. I have only had it a few day, but I have a concerning amount of playtime on it and it has quickly ascended to one of my favorite games. The mechanics are simple and soothing, the story is wholesome, the art style is beautiful and cozy, and the soundtrack is simply perfect. Best spent $20.

At first glance, this game was exactly what I enjoy in a game: low stakes, wholesome, and frog-filled. While it fulfilled those expectations, it also left me feeling bored. The UI also was fine but a bit clunky. The gameplay is very repetitive, and the game itself did not feel particularly memorable. After 3ish hours in-game, I didn't feel any attachment to the npcs nor to the frogs. The part I probably enjoyed most …

Kamaeru: A Frog Rescue is a cozy, heartwarming game where you hop (😉) into the role of rescuing adorable frogs and restoring their habitat. The art style is beautiful (quite ribbiting) and the music is soothing, making it perfect for unwinding after a long day. Some gameplay elements aren’t fully explained, but you can leap to the right conclusions pretty easily. Furniture placement isn’t very precise so if you’re …

neutral · AI labelView post →I love frogs and wanted to love this game. It's really cute and there is feeling of glee when I see the frogs in the various cute poses. The overall game feels way too fast paced for what it's supposed to be. You have to be quick to get pictures of frogs and the game and while there is definitely an endorphin rush of "new frog!" when you see the icon, the visual variety becomes stale. Some combinations can only be gotten through breeding and the game seems to actively work against you when…

neutral · AI labelView post →I think this game needed more time in the oven. The art? Cute. Adorable even! But insanely repetitive. All the frogs are color swaps of one another, with no unique versions like I expected. The decorations are all VERY human furniture, which is... odd. The game has a ton of minigames that are insanely frustrating. Did I 100% it? Yep. But honestly, it wasn't worth it. I should have quit while I was ahead, but by then I was so close I just had to get it done. The crafting system is a particular…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The fact that the frogs are all just recolors of each other is a big turn-off for me. After finishing the tutorial (that had way too much talk OMFG) there didnt seem to be enough veriety in gameplay. Some minigames here and there. But since my main interest was collecting all the frogs and they are all just recolors or eachother without much more then feed, look at and breed it was very lackluster FOR ME. You might endjoy this game, not my type of game. The art was cute though.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's cute, but it's essentially a glorified clicker game with some random mini-games thrown in. It doesn't really have any longevity worth talking about and even an hour and a half in it was getting too grindy.

neutral · AI labelView post →First, I want to say that I really like frogs! They are absolutely adorable in this game. The game is very easy to get through. It has a small storyline for you to complete and space to decorate with furniture and other items. You can also color some of them. While it is all cute, it sadly isn't entertaining enough for me. It is mostly a few clicks here and there, making items, selling them, clicking on frogs to feed them to collect the ones you miss, or breeding them, placing a few ponds and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I realy wanted to like this game because I loved the overall look of it, the frogs look absolutely adorable, and the idea of collecting frogs, decorate everything and restore nature. Unfortunately the game just feals like there is something missing. I got bored very quickly, the frogs you have to take photos of dissapered way to fast to call this game cozy and I had two crashes on the steamdeck in the one hour I was playing. It is a cute looking game, it's just not worth the price for me.

My partner and I did not make it through the tutorial after five attempts before deciding we should refund this. Kora’s review here on Steam seems to highlight more issues with the mid to late game that we just did not want to continue to deal with. To highlight the issues: the very first attempt, we were able to take a photo of a frog, but then all the controls froze. We…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Considering I got this game on sale mainly because I NEEDED that frog badge, I've gotten quite a lot out of it. Nevermind that it makes zero sense that frogs would prefer human sofas and beds (also eww, that ♥♥♥♥'s gonna get moldy SO fast out there) over their wetland habitat. I have to admit it's cute that they give them human-like traits. Still, it's a weird mix of science-y and silly. At least it makes a lot of sense that a bunch of white people would tell others what to do, when local…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game lacks any real management skills. It really feels like a kids iPad game where management choices don't matter. Resources are extremely easily collected and takes no work at all. Probably too expensive for such an easy game, I don't think this should be classified as a farming sim or management game at all. Great for people who want rule-free collection games.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Had my eyes on this one for a while because I thought the art was cute and the concept of a frog sanctuary definitely grabbed this cozy gamer's interest. However, it's very grindy with little to no plot, and felt more like an unfinished mobile game than a PC game. I can't really bring myself to want to see more of it after investing an hour in it since it's basically a nonstop gameplay loop of the same actions over and over and over with the only differentiation being different frog colors…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The longer you play the more glitches and bugs it's has, especially when it comes to breeding. More bugs when streaming. Controller input glitches and freezes.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →why is this twenty dollars when it is literally a poorly made mobile game. it's not a pc game, IT LITERALLY DOESN'T EVEN SUPPORT A DISPLAY RESOLUTION OF 2560x1440??? I will say the art is cute but bro. it just looks thrown together. there's often grammar issues in the writing, and it's just overall super clunky. I feel like this is one of the games that got onto the cozy games hype train in order to make up for the lack of overall quality. I understand that some games aren't as polished as…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is cute, the artstyle and frogs are adorable! I did refund it because it was too easy, I like cozy games and grinding for items and collectibles, but this was just too easy. You can tame frogs with one insect per discovery or just invest all the needed insects for insta tame. After taking 20 pictures, it gets old. For the short time that I played this game I already discovered 50% of the forgs. The cooking is repetitive and becomes a boring but needed task almost instantly. I was looking…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros: -Cute art -Frog Cons: -Repetitive gameplay -UI jank The game's art is lovely, and it has some cute themes, but outside of the visual adorableness it's just not for me for reasons listed below: 1. The game's UI is clunky and it feels like it was made for a touch screen - a lot of the options require you to click and drag things, there's a ton of 'click here' activities etc. The UI sections are incredibly large, the dialogue boxes cover the entire screen. There's a certain clunkiness to…

neutral · AI labelView post →It got very repetitive and annoying after about 2h. I think the game needs to have a challenge, otherwise you're just waiting around for the frogs to show up. The breeding was fun for a bit, but it's a game of chance and you must do it a milion times to get all the frogs.

neutral · AI labelView post →Cute game, but definitely not worth the price. Took me 6h to finish the story and 16h in total to 100% it, but honestly it could've been a 3-4h game for much cheaper and it would've been great. The game is not challenging in any meaningful way. The achievements don't support the optimal gameplay, so I had to redo my optimal plant/water placement to get the 100% bioscore achievement for example. Speaking of optimal gameplay, I would get quests to level my sanctuary up to lvl 24 when I was…

I got it to a good enough state — functional, usable, not embarrassing in low light. And then I stopped. I didn't put that final 10% of effort in to make it truly finished. If you came to my house for the first time you'd probably say "oh, are you working on a project?" And I'd have to tell you: no, I stopped two years ago. I got it to "just usable…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hey, so this is really a neutral review but I can't bear to give a positive one. I ask myself would I recommend any of my friends buy it and the answer is no. It's mostly a short cosy frog game on the surface with a fair bit of repetitive grinding to get the final achievements if you are a completionist. Spoilers from now on: However, and this may seem a small issue but it does really put me off a game the portrayal of black and Indonesian people. It was very stereotyped and also playing in…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is probably the cutest game I'll play all year, in terms of art style and possibly even plot. For someone looking for something cute and casual, I highly recommend. the frogs are adorable, the music is cute and simple without being annoying. The game play loop of collect bugs and resources, make merch to sell, buy furniture to find more frogs and ponds and plants to diversify the wetlands and get more resources is satisfying. For those who decide to seek all the achievements, you're…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I adore frogs, and had been waiting for a game like this for a while. It's adorable, the soundtrack is nice, and honestly, it's a simple, chill game that doesn't require skill, nor does it have an overwhelming amount of mechanics. I certainly hope to see more updates in the future though, as it does seem the tiniest bit lacklustre for the moment. It was also a pretty nice surprise for it to release the day after my birthday lol
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its a cute game to pass the time, if you can get it on sale go for it. But for full price it feel like a 5-10$ mobile game, the minigames get boring really fast. And to get all the color you need a luck or a long time

neutral · AI labelView post →Really cute game. You collect frogs, feed frogs, and breed frogs (not a fan of the breeding, very rarely do I get lucky enough to get a new frog). You can decorate your different refuges, and make items to sell in each area so you can buy furniture for your frogs. It's simple, adorable, and enjoyable. Edited to add: Once I got the hang of breeding, it became relatively easy. Just takes a bit of patience :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very cute artwork, but somehow the gameplay doesn't feel compelling enough. It's true there is a narrative, but the tasks are extremely repetitive and the customizing is a bit flat.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was VERY cute and easy enough to get perfect achievements for. However, the grind of getting every color of every frog variation really took it out of me. I played for a while when I first got the game, took a break, and only recently completed the achievements. I don't recall the story but it was easy enough to jump back in control wise, I recommend using a mouse and keyboard. The three-star picture achievement took me a while as well because I did not realize nor remember that I…

positive · AI labelView post →I only played for a few minutes, but that was enough for me. The controls aren't very intuitive, moving across the 'map' is infuriatingly slow, and the little bit of story I saw was very bland. If you ever played Pocket Frogs on your phone, this is basically the same thing with some decorating instead of jumping across lily pads. I like the premise, but the execution is lacking.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →All the other negative reviews say exactly how I feel so I can't add much. I love frogs but the UI drove me insane and also soft locked me a few times. After a couple hours I started to have a decent time after I got the pond area complete and I was moving onto buying furniture and breeding frogs (which is slightly frustrating for It's own reasons) then suddenly a new area opens up with more ponds and farming to do and I just go "URGH" and quit. I was gifted this but I would have refunded if I…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm loving this little frog collecting game. It's a simple premise - set up a nice wetland, catch some bugs, meet some frogs. The devs seem to be very active on Discord and are open to feedback when folks report a bug or offer a suggestion. My only regret is the number of adorable frogs is finite and I cannot find new ones forever. Excellent cozy game to relax with.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to like this game, but it honestly just feels like things are happening too fast. The frogs are only present on screen for less than a minute, so when there's more than one new one it feels like a scramble to get them all photographed and tamed. The breeding system is INCREDIBLY frustrating, it's impossible to select all three traits for a frog to have, and it's very hard just to get two. I understand the whole "nature adds randomness" aspect, but it's just way too impactful and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Exactly the kind of game I was looking for!! I needed something that wasn’t fast paced and nothing stressful. Plus the game wasn’t complicated and didn’t require me to remember a bunch of features. Simple in the best way possible. Huge thanks to the dev for creating this masterpiece. This game has definitely helped me on days where I’ve been extremely low. You can’t go wrong with cute frogs!

If there were as many frogs in the world as there are in this cute game, it would be a better place to live. And that's even though these frogs are all the same, except for the colors. But wait - where are the toads?
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just an over all really chill and simple game and I love it for that. The art is gorgeous and the frogs are cute what else is there to say.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has beautiful art work and the premise of saving wetlands and frogs is very "of the moment". I find this game very relaxing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have enjoyed this game very much and really hope it evolves and many things are added. First, would love more color options for the frog breeding, different pond combinations, as well as the ability to maybe add lily-pads and water lilies to the ponds. I am not a fan of the "painting" shop and find the color palette portion confusing (how to save / add a color to your palette for future use). More color options for the frogs (purple, black, gray, etc) would be amazing though and hope that…
