What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 186 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (344 of 479 positive).
Many reviewers note the game feels short and ends abruptly, with an unfinished story. [1][2][3] Some players are disappointed by the lack of depth, such as no shop upgrades or actual card game play. [4][5][6]

(For those actually reading reviews before purchasing the game, please note that the game, in fact, doesn't seem to end after 2 hours. There's more cutscenes and things after the credits roll. Not really sure why they chose to put the credit roll at 2 hours, but oh well) I want to like this game. I really do. But it just ends up feeling so... bland. There's a lot to like here, but it's got a few things holding it …

It's a very fun game however, it randomly ends after 2 hours. As if it's intentionally trying to scam you from refunding. The storyline is NOWHERE NEAR FINISHED, in the middle of the plot, and it suddenly rolls credits. I'm tempted to ask if the credits being there is a bug to the devs honestly, it seemed so out of place. WTF?

A game about running a TCG shop with an addictive core gameplay loop that had me going “just one more day and then I’ll stop” constantly. Just be warned you don’t actually play the TCG! Video review at the bottom! Remember those glorious days playing yugioh or magic with your friends in your favorite TCG stores? With Kardboard Kings, you get to relive them! Well, except the yugioh or magic part, as those games are …

I truly wish that there was more to this game. I'm not saying it's shallow or uninteresting, it has a lot of passion and I straight up haven't bought another "TCG shop" simulator if the card art doesn't even amount up to half of what KK provided me with, which is to say that I haven't bought any at all since because it's that good. There is a story. It's a fun story. And it's fun to take a break from the eventual …

TL;DR: 6/10, basically the same ratio of how much game they've actually released. But it's relaxing and chill as long you avoid actually playing the card game. But I just feel like it's a couple of beers short of being a six pack and the game really does feel undercooked... most of the time. But that …

60 of 198 · most liked firstIf you somehow got recommended this game through TCG Card Shop Simulator, dont buy it. The time that you can get out of this game is not worth the $20. The gameplay loop at the beginning was okay. Opening pack, trading and selling cards to customer fulfill the itch that many of us have if we grew up watching Yugioh, but then you realize that the 1st hour is all the game have. Very bared bone narrative and feel like a cash grab, I would've rather spent my money on a plate of Panda Express

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm so intensely disappointed in Kardboard Kings because "Friendly Local Game Store tycoon" is a concept for a game I'd love to see done well. Balancing profitability against hosting events that increase your reputation and bring in more customers long term, hedging your bets on the potential value of a new set, buying singles low and selling them high, etc... all this should be the basis of a really excellent tycoon game. Kardboard Kings is clearly going for that as you run a shop focused on a…

neutral · AI labelView post →A very cool concept but the execution is unfortunately very misguided. While it is very cool to buy cards when they are cheap to speculate that they raise in value due to changes in the meta, you will eventually ask youself the question "what do i even do with the money?". At the end of the day there are no upgrades for your shop or no costs for living that you have to meet. All there is, is a card collection binder and cosmetical furniture. But even that is not enough to make the Store feel…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So this game... i really liked it at first The gameplay loop of buying cards when they're low and selling them later for a profit is quite fun and the plot has some interesting hooks. The Art of the Cards is by far the best feature, which is great since youre looking at cards for most of the game. However the actual story was dissapointingly short, you can't upgrade the sore in any way, so you're always stuck with selling 6 cards, and by far the worst part is the attempt of implementing the…

neutral · AI labelView post →I love the concept of this game, but the fact of the matter is; you own a card shop that only ever sells singles, never has a chance to make a retailer-corporate deal and the card game itself is so basic (rock-paper-scissors anyone) to the point that selling the cards for it (and any news surrounding the cards) boils down to which colours, sets or rarities you own; there are no advanced synergies, cards trend for irrelevant reasons. What I do like is that the packs themselves scale in price…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Update: I can see that the devs have continued to update and add content to the game which is great to see. I wanted to wait until I completed Kardboard Kings before writing a review; getting my hands on a mint shiny Peter Piccolo card took far longer than I'm willing to admit but I finally completed the binder and unlocked the Big Gold Nugget achievement. Let me start by saying that Kardboard Kings feels like an early access game, so much so that I'm quite surprised that it isn't an early…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First time I leave a negative feedback I think, the thing is broken with game-breaking bugs, no update from devs, bugs such as when receiving mail (its the way you redeem the card you bought, so pretty much the game core mech) on day three the last card can't be redeemed at all and the screen stay stuck with absolutly no option to bypass it, after relaunching the game three times same bug, then I thought let's reinstall one time just to be sure, I got a new one : selecting a card to sell it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A truly awful experience. I was having fun for the first hour... until I realised that hour was the entire game. And then you just get to play the shop to continue, which isn't fun when there is one constant glitch that makes the booster pack party not work, reputation is a horrible thing to even try and gain and you lose far too much far too quickly, and now I'm stuck on an island to play the game that I don't want to play because who wants to play essentially rock paper scissors? Regretful…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR This game may be worth buying eventually, but I doubt it. How funny you find the following... irony in a card game shop owner not knowing how to play their own product, streamers being loud and the number 69 being funny on it's own, will tell you how much you'll like this game's humor. The story feels like an anime where your shop keep isn't the main character, and the other characters are supposedly dragging you into messes when all you want to do is hit on your ugly ex gf. The game play…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I will start off by saying that I have enjoyed playing this game, however I simply cannot recommend it as a $20 game, especially considering that it seems to be considered complete and not an early access game by the devs, which is extremely disappointing. It is a very good base, but for $20, I would expect much, much more of a game, or at least some hope that more to the game is coming. The problem is that the game is very limited once you unlock all 7 sets of 12 cards (which doesn't take…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My first (and only) clear took about 12 hours with a fair bit of idling--maybe about 5-6 hours all together. The core game play loop has potential, but feels unrefined. As a kid who grew up during the birth of M:TG, I had a dream of owning my shop, and this game comes kind of close, but falls a bit short in the following areas: A) the narrative is a head-scratcher. It feels like they ran out of time halfway through it. Near the end, there were some lines that just didn't seem to make much…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is ok, definetely not worth the 20 euros. It has a decent gameplay loop, the art style is fine, but it feels unfinished, many things are missing (Card battles, a way to actually make pack opening enjoyable, better management of furnitures and stuff). I got so disappointed when i got the chalk figure floor because i expected it to be one massive floor, instead it's just a repeating pattern of a lot of small chalk figures and it sucks lol. I'd say that unless you are buying it for a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It starts out as a cute shop game, but then quickly gets very stupid and in your face annoying with insanely "hello fellow kids" energy from what can only feel like modern day Karens. Completely unlikable characters and 'lulz so random' story turns what should've been a cute shop game into something that leaves you annoyed at the entire thing. But let's purely talk about the gameplay. Cute card shop game. Slow start, basic enough, shows you how to begin, and once you get the gist of it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is simplistic. So simplistic, I've spent nearly 30 hours just jaggin around with the limp-wristed effort of creating a "sim" card shop game. Spoiler alert: if you wanna win? Sort your cards by price. That's it. That's all you have to do. Everything else is legit, double digit IQ simple. To really underscore that point: The gay shoehorning into the REALLY poorly written "story" -- not to mention the BIG EBIL HUWITE MAN IS TEH BAD DOOD -- is pathetic at it's best. It's okay though,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Did I spend too many hours on this? Yes. Did I enjoy it? A bit. But the game has so many issues it's kind of startling. The story jumps all over and ends so abruptly it caught me off guard. The art and stylization of the cards is nice. The idea of 4 cards pack (which are only available some days, at random) of 10 card sets is... interesting. The 'game', when you play it, feels clumsy and frustrating. The game has a lot of QOL frustration - getting the last few achievements (especially all…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a unique game that could have been really cool, sadly there are many things that make it less enjoyable: - story: the story is weird, which is not necessarily bad, but there is just not enough of it? you can chat with some NPCs but after a few chats it just repeats and you never really get a lot out of it. the "main" (?) story about legendary cards is also really lacking? i've played for 5 hours and only gotten like 2 or 3 cutscenes - the main character: is very unlikable. there are…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hard to give this a downvote, but I really can't recommend it. I think the idea and style of Kardboard Kings is good, but it lacks polish. There isn't a lot of content so you can breeze through the game quickly (They should have spread out the new sets over a longer period of time because there was only so many sets and then there weren't any more parties). The gameplay is fine for the most part (there are some bugs, some have been fixed), but again just lack of innovation or things to change…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I went in to this hoping for something akin to Recettear, while embracing the TCG features. Unfortunately it misses both marks spectacularly, and the store description feels inaccurate to the point of being misleading. The gameplay is very minimal. It has the bare-bones of a merchant sim, but the loop is painfully short such that it feels rushed, and there is no real sense of progression, no tangible feedback for success. The card game aspect is lip service at best, functioning as an excuse to…

neutral · AI labelView post →You like card games but bad reviews for this game makes you doubt it? Im here to help. Being straightforward I would recommend this game if you really like card games and collecting them. I played Magic The Gathering and this game really feels fun from that perspective. Now a little about the game Story Game starts with somewhat actually engaging story, but going on it just ends with main character saying…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For what it is, there is very little in terms of simulation here. Compared to others on the market. The game was enjoyable, but there are a lot of flaws. + Gorgeous artwork on the cards + Music is really good - The days are very short, I struggled to make money to get anywhere in terms of progression. - Story is shamefully short and feels incomplete. I finished the game before the big TCG event, which made no sense to me because the big event was lead up to be the big finale for the game. -…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very short main gameplay. Story is also short. Goes to a side quest where you play with the cards but IDGAF about the card game mechanics it doesnt help with running the shop
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gameplay Wise the first hour of the game is the exact same as if you would play the game for 100 hours. The only thing to the gameplay is selling and buying cards and the extra mechanics doesn't add anything. You can only spend money on more cards or decorations and NOT on expanding the store physically. There are not that many decorations that look nice in my opinion, so I found 1 setup I liked and never changed it. Some spots for the decorations can’t even be viewed because they are placed…

So I restarted to make sure I caught everything. After that, I was hooked. I actually took my whole weekend and played this game from start to finish. I collected every card, including all legendary cards. I even want to go back and get all foil versions of each card, which I had already almost done anyways. This game is definitely worth playing :) The ONLY thing I…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The only thing about this game I enjoyed was cards' art. Everything else... cringy dialogues, mechanics, the story. No. Just no. Should have listened to other reviews, it's simply not fun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First things first, I only recommend this game to players who enjoy collecting aspect of card games, I wouldn't recommend it otherwise as game is mediocre at best. Story - "weird" probably suits it the best. It starts from nowhere, ends abruptly and feels like an afterthought. Main plot ends fairly quickly and you can keep on playing the game normally without extra cringe dialogues and cutscenes. Music - good, you can switch between three tracks daily as your shop BGM (overall there are…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I adore this game, it's just the right mix of casual and challenging. You run a card shop and try to keep ahead of trends to make a good profit. E.g. a pro player says they love a certain deck, so the price of those specific cards goes up. McDonalds gives cards away in a free promotion, so they lose value. You are constantly scouring eBay looking for a good deal on cards you can then sell in your shop. It sounds simple but once several trends are in play at once it can be challenging to…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I adore store management games. I don't know what's these them that makes the repetition of buying, selling, and upgrading so addicting, but this game makes you do a lot of back and forth. Knowing what cards you have collected, while not difficult to open the box (it doesn't pause the day) so a lot of the time you're in and out trying to maximize gains while also trying to fulfill your collection. During the day or at the end of the day when you're looking at what cards to buy, afaik…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To my surprise this game is VERY heavy on the story, to the point that it almost feels like it rushes you through the the day at the shop just to get you to more dialogue. All of the pieces are there for a great game I just don't think they've quite figured out how to use them. The price trend mechanics are good but practically inconsequential because if you're not buying as many cards as you can to sell the next day you quickly run out of money. I love simulation management games but this…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I loved the first two hours or so before the main plot of the game suddenly.... ended? In the current build it goes nowhere and the current content of the game doesn't offer much content variety/difficulty increase to justify continuing outside for completion's sake. Even the same-y content that exists runs out before too long. The characters are very endearing for the first hour or two, but you may grow to hate them as they quickly become soulless husks of repeating dialogue the more you play…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I thought this game was going to get better and better, with allowing us more freedoms in running in the shop, maybe more variety, more story beats... but then the game just ends, it's over and it's so anticlimactic. I felt like my time was wasted and it all felt so rushed. I just can't recommend it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Kardboard Kings: Card Shop Simulator is a handheld (Nintendo Switch)/console game that's also been put on Steam as a bit of an afterthought, as it's very much designed for the handheld/console gaming audience. There's a lot of potential for this game that's been wasted on an incredibly weak, almost mobile app tier technical delivery. There's certainly a market for business tycoon games, and amongst those, yes, a trading card game shop simulator. And that's what you do in this game, buy and…

It's great how each new set release keeps things fresh each month; initially concerned about monotony, but the concept and characters are incredibly engaging. It appears that the primary challenge is navigating the delicate balance between profitability and the shops reputation through careful…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The only reason I'm giving this a positive review is because I got this game for cheap. I wouldn't spend $20 on this game for the sole reason that you reach endgame pretty quickly and there isn't much to do after that. Sure they keep updating the game with new card sets but is there really a difference in gameplay or how you change up your strategies on selling card? Not really. The game IS addicting and fun when you first get your hands on it, figuring out the best ways to make a profit but…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Kardboard Kings: Card Shop Simulator, developed by Henry's House, Oscar Brittain, and Rob Gross and published by Akupara Games, takes a surprisingly heartfelt approach to a niche hobby that many players immediately recognize. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I got this for free and it's not good enough to be worth that price. The game is glacially slow. There's no way to speed up time, and you don't get to set prices or manage your inventory in any meaningful way. Instead you just buy things when they're cheap, then wait painfully for the prices to spike enormously. The game punishes you by forcing you to accept bad deals or lose reputation. The card game isn't very fun to play either. Despite those complaints, Kardboard Kings is also incredibly…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game tries to be a lot of things but doesn't seem to do neither particularly well. One genre, that I particularly didn't appreciate, is an attempt at dating sim. I.E. there are certain customers you talk to, form bond and/or learn more about. It breaks the flow of the gameplay, it happens too often, not to mention these characters approach you along with the customers which makes you go on a lengthy dialogue when you least want it. There is no "skip the whole dialogue" option either. The…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hmm. This game. It has some ideas and potential, I'll give it that, but I think a couple of things hold it back. Firstly, the card game itself (when you get to play it) is rather roughly designed and optimised. Card draw is tied to having a rainbow of colours, and yet deck consistency suffers for that in a game with no spells and no win conditions other than "beat your opponent down". It doesn't help that you can't really design your own deck despite running a card store (that I know of after…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is a delightful time, but overall it is just ok. It really doesnt shine with any of its features and will keep you wanting for something more.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I know the game looks like fun, the art looks great, etc. Unfortunately the game is just way too far from complete to recommend. The game abruptly ends, with nowhere near enough time to collect all the cards (from the 3 total expansions lol) or finish some of character arcs. It was fun while it lasted, but it only lasted 2 hours. It's a great concept, really. It's just nowhere near ready. Even if you normally love early access like I do, I'd stay away.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Feature bare - plays like a demo or early access. The only mechanics of this game are checking your calendar for a price increase/decrease, and buying or selling the matching cards to make your money number go up. I'm a big fan of this style of game, but this one is just empty.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game was a pleasant, albeit short experience. The card shop management was fun for awhile but started to get stale before I was able to unlock all the card sets in the game, and I felt that the story was interesting at first but was very quickly cut short without any real resolution. I also felt that the card game island mode that was implemented wasn't anything particularly interesting. If you can pick up the game on sale, Its not a bad investment. But I don't think its worth it at full…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game feels like a B+ rough draft of a game. There's some surprise adult humor in here, if that's a turn off for you. The game's story ends just as you get into the flow of how everything works, and while you can unlock Card Island, it's clearly an after thought to the rest of the game. I would be very interested in a sequel to this game more so than more content for this game. I will admit that after HOURS of enjoying this game, my taste was soured when a child NPC asked me for some beers…
