OG Sierra development at it's finest. Just remember the game is almost 30 yrs old, so it's not a modern interface, and there is no hand-holding. LOMSE has never been a problem to get running (Win95 to the present 11, on non-gaming laptops/towers), and it's a natural 4:3 aspect. Some things that appear simple are not so simple as they appear. For instance, chess. Or Lords of Magic Special Edition. The basic game is straightforward: pick one of seven religions, and either a warrior, thief, or mage as your leader. Try to survive the upcoming war of conquest waged by the Death religion to sacrifice non-believers and bring the God of Death to the world of Urak. Each religion's units have different strengths and weaknesses. The mages of each faction have spells that fit…

There is an old video game called Lords of Magic in which the Order faction (which is about unified effort towards the greater good) has as its top-level spell "Heroic Demise". Mechanically the spell gives one unit a big boost to all its stats, but the catch is that at the end of the battle that unit always counts as having been killed. I was very reluctant to use it when I was a little kid because I didn't want to kill my own units, but of course the lesson is that units will die anyway and…

What a great game from the glory years of Sierra. It came off the heals of Lords of the Realm 2, another great game, and was glorious. I had the demo as a game and pleaded with my parents that we get this game and it was rewarded with a Christmas morning. I played this and quickly found the best units and always got them. It did get a bit lame after a long time but then they had the fun extra missions of the legends of Urak. It was nice. So, when I came back as an adult I found a mod that…

Lords of Magic: Special Edition, developed by Impressions Games and published by Rebellion, stands as one of the most ambitious strategy titles of the late 1990s—a hybrid of turn-based empire management, real-time tactical battles, and role-playing progression wrapped in a mythic fantasy world. It presents the land of Urak, a continent divided by eight elemental faiths—Life, Death, Order, Chaos, Fire, Water, Earth, and Air—all locked in eternal rivalry after the dark lord Balkoth plunged the…

I played this for the first time in 2024 so the following review is not biased by any nostalgia for the game. However, it is biased by a fondness for retro games and the fantasy genre. If you enjoy retro fantasy games like myself, then this game is for you. I love this game. If you do as well, you can get a WORKING Version from GOG website. As this one is broken if you have windows 10-11. I don't have another version of windows so I cannot tell you if it does work just with a earlier version. That said, I do have a laptop with the original CD of the game, purchased back when I was a little kid. That does work and the version of windows I had back then was Windows XP.

An old favorite that hasn't aged well. When this game was brand new I would spend many an hour munching on carrots, drinking strong black tea, and trying to win this game when I should have been studying for my college classes. The turn based strategy combined with real time battles is most welcome here, but the interface and graphics are clunky and dated. The sound effects and voices are great, but some of the design just looks silly. The dwarfs and gnomes are cute but the Nordic high elves…

"Lords of Magic: Special Edition" is an ancient game from 1997. It's a whopping 26 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks support for any modern gaming display resolutions (or widescreen monitors), hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an ancient game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge. Topically this is basically a clone of Heroes of Might…

It's just too damn old at this point. I don't recommend this unless you have nostalgia for it. Arrow keys to scroll view, keys not re-bindable, hurts to look at, mods just tinker with balance for the most part & don't address resolution or key UI problems.

And if there were patches, you 100% had the choice to run it without them. There was a bad patch for Lords Of Magic SE that completely screwed up the difficulty scaling. Of course the version GOG had up for the longest time (I think they supposedly fixed it) was the base game plus that patch.

This strategy turn-based builder game is what I consider the pinnacle of the Lords of the Realm series. The interface is bulky, and some aspects are redundant once you encounter a new aspect, but it is a game from the mid 90's. This game was built to last, and has lost very little of it's charm. Especially considering the fact that it is a game released bug-free.
