LostWinds
Developer Frontier Developments
LostWinds is a 2008 platform video game developed by Frontier Developments and published for the Wii as a launch title for WiiWare. In LostWinds, the player controls a young boy named Toku and the elemental wind spirit Enril (and in two-player mode, a second player also controls Enril) as they travel Mistralis in order to rescue it from the antagonist Balasar, a vengeful spirit. In Japan, the game was ported and… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 190 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (612 of 755 positive).
Players find LostWinds a charming and nostalgic short platformer with creative wind mechanics. [1][2][3] Many reviewers note the PC port has frustrating controls and technical issues like crashes. [4][5][6] Some players recommend it only on sale due to its short length and control problems. [4][5][7]

This was originally a "WiiWare" game on the Nintendo Wii. WiiWare games were tiny digital only games that had to be under 40MBs in size. The game was a delightful novelty. Nothing amazing but used the Wii Remote well and had interesting ideas and executions moving the Wii Remote in 3D space. Level design was very average. This PC port is trash that even a garbage bin would reject. Zero configure options with fixed …

I really enjoyed the concept of Lost Winds but the controllers were so frustrating! It was also annoying that the settings weren't easy to get to & that they would reset on me each time I opened the game. I did 100% the game but I would for sure wait for a sale. I hope the sequel is better optimized because I really want to play it. 6/10

Sometimes, I just don't like Steam's binary recommend options. Because games like this need a bit more than a "yes" or "no". Since I thought it would be harsh to give a negative review, I'll leave a positive one. But that by no means tells an accurate story. LostWinds is cute and charming. That's what made me buy this game. It was over in a few hours but boy, did the controls make this a pain to play. The wind …

LostWinds is a 2d platformer puzzle game where you're the last airbend- er, um... No, wrong series... Players who liked LostWinds talk about creative and fun wind manipulation mechanics; those who didn't talk about frustrating controls, especially with mouse and keyboard. Which matters more to you?
Critics, per Wikipedia
The Wii version received "favorable" reviews, while the iOS version received "average" reviews, according to the review aggregation website Metacritic. IGN praised the Wii version's sound and graphics, calling the presentation "remarkable", and felt the gameplay was fresh and fun with clever puzzles and tight controls. However, they had concerns with the short length of said console version, which they claimed could be finished in about three hours, but felt this was offset by the relatively inexpensive price compared to a retail game. Eurogamer also praised the presentation, controls and puzzles, claiming it to be a "mini-masterpiece", while GamePro gave the Wii version a perfect score,…

60 of 197 · most liked firstLink to review: https://backloggd.com/u/RedBackLoggd/review/279131/ LostWinds is an example of a game that’s mostly charm and very little substance. Okay, maybe that’s being too harsh, but when you have a concept as interesting as a platformer with wind manipulation and you squander it on cause/effect schemas that barely constitute as puzzles, you can imagine my disappointment. Unlike other platformers, LostWinds has developed a decent mythology about its world, and while that mythos is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Didn't find it fun. Using mouse to control wind was more annoying and repetitive than anything else. Same with enemies, way too easy so just annoying. DIdn't see any volume or music controls to lower/turn it off. Story is pretty straightforward and characters aren't really built at all either. It's kinda annoying going back and forth through the maps; I wish I could fast travel through the map. The slipstream cape could be fun though, should have introduced that in the beginning. Kept going…

Consistently crashes near the start of the game so hard you have to restart you're computer from a the task bar on a second monitor. Probably a forced shutdown if you don't have a second monitor. This crash was noted and confirmed by multiple people on the forums starting in December 2024.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a terrible port with no in-game options menu at all. With no options you can't change the resolution, and because of sloppy coding that means that if your default resolution is above 1920x1080 then the cursor can't reach the full screen - it's bound inside a smaller invisible box. Even changing the game resolution with launch options doesn't fix it. The only solution is to change the default resolution in your system settings, though when I closed the game after doing so my cursor got…

neutral · AI labelView post →I really wanted to like it, since it has lots of charm. The game is very short and the story isn't concluded in this game, you need to play part 2 for the rest of the story. The controls/gameplay is very clunky at times and that's why I really can't recommend it.

neutral · AI labelView post →This is a really nostalgic game for me because I played it on the Nintendo Wii as a kiddo, and I remember getting really stuck quite near the beginning, and never being able to progress to the main story. It was so fun and satisfying getting to play it all the way through this time! The PC version is slightly buggy in the beginning area and I had to restart the game a few times, but after that it ran smoothly, and it was delightful!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →73. LostWinds. This is a delightful little puzzle platformer that I played on the Wii. It’s probably the game that opened my eyes to what indie games could be. It’s fairly slight, but it’s a lovely time while you’re playing it.

neutral · AI labelView post →Honest Review: - A fun little game, nothing too crazy about it; - The wind mechanics are nice and they work well; - Short and sweet and can be finished in around 2 hours; Achievement Hunting (the main reason why i played this game in the first place): - Pretty easy and straight forward achievements, the only thing to point, is that you get your exploration in day so that you can find all the collectibles in every area, besides that it's super simple.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Maybe if I had played this game when it was released it would have been better, but by todays standard I found this game to be quite bland and not very exciting.

Neutral: -Very short game length. -In-game camera not working well sometimes. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →so, this game was never design to be played on a PC. the controls really is bad, don't just read the reviews here, cus most of them just sharing the experience of their gameplay but not on the PC :) how funny. the game isn't long, and it supposed to be relaxing. However, with the bad controls u will be stuck in your place trying to do the same thing but it just doesn't work. the idea is cool, but the actual thing isn't. also, some people may say this isn't good cus it's just half game and u…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An alright game. It being originally a Wii exclusive of all things is pretty apparent. Controls on a traditional Xinput gamepad are too bothersome to use. Mouse and keyboard is alright, but still feels a little gimmicky to me. This would be a not recommended if this wasn't the only way to buy this game now. Because if it was still available on the iOS store touch controls are definitely the way to go for this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An okay adventure-platformer -- on seemingly the Wii. Atrocious PC controls make this basically unplayable. If you stick with it you'll eventually manage, but be sure to use a well-tracking and preferably fast, wired mouse. The constant droning Chinese restaurant muzak didn't help appreciation either. If anyone gets as stuck on the final bossfight as I was: it's spacebar while on the shard to grab on to it...

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Though I had enjoyed my time playing this there were a few downs. Some of the major downsides for me was the spinning mechanic and the interactions with the splorp spawner. -The spinning just didn't feel instinctive and the instructions were unclear to me. This was especially bad for me as it's something I had to learn in order to progress with the game and it wasn't a mechanic I liked using -For the splorp spawner,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Decently short platformer game with the entertaining (and janky) ability to control the wind. Took about two hours to 100% but still a fun lil time. Get on sale and it's probably worth it. It did crash once, but it saved right before so it wasn't too big of a deal.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Relatively easy game, the way you navigate throughout the levels/stages can be very frustrating and has brought rage out of me that i haven't seen since i was younger. Game on my end seemed to lockup/freeze during some of the animation when unlocking treasures or collecting secrets, happend about 5 times, you will have to recollect everything if you didn't' reach a checkpoint. worth a playthrough
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Literally my childhood
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Both systems had AAA/AA games taking the ball game as anything else on the system that wasn't those were mediocre and mostly ran at 30fps. Still, I take the Wii's library for the win because it had games like LostWinds, BIT TRIP, World of Goo, and the strongest form of Virtual Consoles.
positive · AI labelView post →Unfortunately I am less even an hour in and already crashed 4 times. I have great nostalgia for this game but I'm not sure I can play it like this :/ Edit: I stopped crashing after that! So maybe it was an issue on my end. It was a nice and nostalgic experience ^^

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I thought WiiWare had some great short adventures that used clever mechanics not seen in the Wii’s larger scale games. Being said, I was genuinely a big fan of the 2 LostWinds games. More platform game with MV elements, I really enjoyed learning new wind waggle moves to reach new parts of the map.
positive · AI labelView post →bottom line: boring lore and awkward control luckily it is a really short game
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very cute game! Though it was very short I had a lot of fun figuring out the different puzzles to get from one area to the next and I thought the story was cute too. The mouse controls were very nice too compared to other wii converted games I've played. Very relaxing game overall. :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mediocre game that feels like a shovelware Wii title that spent too much with gimick controls over gameplay. Story: Very, very basic. It's the generic "ancient evil is returning and you have to stop it by collecting X things". A few NPC characters that say one liners as flavour text, and a cliffhanger for a sequel. It's servicable i guess. Graphics and sound: Would have been fine on Wii 15 years ago, now it's mediocre at best. Gameplay: It's a typical puzzle platformer with some very…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lostwinds was originally a Wii game, produced by an off-shoot of the same company that produces Elite Dangerous and their recent title Lemnis Gate. LostWinds is a very casual adventure game, and very much feels like it was designed for a younger audience. The controls definitely betray the game's wiimote origin but the mouse controls are just as intuitive. There are no controller options sadly, except through steam imput. It's short(around 2-4 hours to 100%), straight forward, and the art…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cute but short game. Exploring the stage with your wind powers is quite fun. The adaptation of the touch-screen controls to keyboard and mouse works very well. The difficulty is low, on the casual side, but I didn't like the last boss battle. It's too confusing and could be better designed.
