Many reviewers note the remaster offers only minor visual improvements and lacks significant changes. [1][2][3] Several players report technical issues, including bugs, stuttering, and save problems. [4][5][6]

"look how they massacred my boy" How this has positive reviews is beyond me. This game is full of bugs, including a game breaking bug at the end of the game that can prevent you from finishing, requiring you to restart the longest chapter in the game. Ground textures flash, characters look retarded during cutscenes, texture draw distance is worse than the original, road signs will randomly blur or flash. None of the …

It's good but not really definitive. It's a decent remaster but why not just go all out and remake everything like Mafia 1?

TL;DR: yes!! but only during a sale. mafia 1 remaster was absolutely peak. i don't quite know what they actually remastered in this however. i had already played the original mafia 2 many years ago you see, and this remaster doesn't really feel all that different at all. still, can't really complain, for it was pretty cheap during a sale and the gameplay is more of the same classic mafia. fun. don't have as high …

Critics, per Wikipedia
Mafia II received "generally favorable reviews" for the Windows and PlayStation 3 versions, and "mixed or average reviews" for the Xbox 360 version and Definitive Edition remaster from critics, according to review aggregator Metacritic. Greg Miller of IGN gave the game 7/10, calling it "a solid little game that'll give you a fun ride – just don't expect the world." Kevin VanOrd of GameSpot gave it 8.5 and stated: "Mafia II's exciting action and uncompromising mob story make for an impressive and violent adventure." Matt Bertz of Game Informer gave it a 9.0/10, writing that "in an era when video games are moving away from relying on cinematics for storytelling, Mafia II draws on the rich…

Also i will never buy a game again from 2K games. 2K Games and Rockstar belongs to Take-Two Interactive so i will never play or buy a game again from this company this includes future Games like GTA 6 or Red Dead Redemption 3. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you played the Mafia definitive edition and expecting a similar experience you are in the wrong place. Camera movement, gun play, default controller bindings they suck compared to Mafia definitive edition.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the worst remasters I've ever played, buggy and lacking any new content and features! The definitive edition for the first Mafia is still infinitely better than this lazy port!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't play this after Mafia 1; it gets boring within five minutes. I never thought I'd get so tired of a game I finished twice using a pirated copy of the classic version. The game is good, but whatever you do, don't play it after the first one; it's terrible.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A lazy, broken excuse for a remaster that somehow managed to ruin a solid original. Even in 2026, the game is plagued by constant stuttering and downgraded effects compared to the 2010 version. The most insulting part is the persistent save game bug: if your Windows username contains non-Latin characters, the game simply refuses to save, forcing you to manually fix system paths just to play. Beyond that, the 'updated' visuals are full of broken textures and glitchy faces, while the atmospheric…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The remaster does improve the visuals: sharper textures, updated lighting and slightly improved character models. The city looks cleaner and more pleasant to explore, especially indoors and during night scenes. It is not a generational leap, but it is visually more comfortable than the original version. That said, the Definitive Edition is far from perfectly polished. Technical issues and minor bugs can still occur, and animations clearly show the game’s age. The gameplay remains unchanged — no…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A few more hours into Mafia III and i'm starting to see some cracks. This game is good but it's not Mafia or Mafia II. Side content is just too repetitive. However, The story and Characters is what keeps me going so i'm probably just gonna B line the story and enjoy it as that.
neutral · AI labelView post →10/10 story. The amount of bugs and it feeling like a old game made me wanna pull my hair out. Not sure why this didn't get the Mafia 1 treatment. I encountered around 5 soft locks and 20 bugs through my 13 hour playthrough. Play Classic Mafia 2 instead.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very dissapointing if you expected anything close to Mafia Definitive edition. The game is very unrefighned and feels much older than 2010
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As of 2026, the port is still bad. The good features from Mafia: Definitive Edition (i.e. driving while shooting) were stripped from Mafia II's Definitive Edition. Game has bugs and broken NPCs throughout it's main campaign and the DLCs. I'm dumbfounded by how poor and muddy this game looks for a remaster (yes, even after tweaking visual settings). There was also an audio bug where voicelines will overlap and repeat sayings at least 3 times. I see why Mafia II (Classic) is bundled with this…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I remember really liking the original Mafia 2, but making an HD remaster in 2020 and messing it up so bad, that the crosshair is way too high and can’t even be centered? Come on. No point in bothering with anything else, given that I can’t even aim painlessly in an FPS game. Such a shame.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →finished Mafia II for the first time in well over a decade. Still a straight up banger of a game and it's re-entered my top 10 games of all time list. Definitely my favourite in the series. On to Mafia III now.
positive · AI labelView post →First playthrough review time. Mafia II: Definitive Edition is a remastered version of the original game with improved graphics and all of the previously released DLC included. The visual upgrade is noticeable and gives the game a cleaner look. Apart from that, the main experience remains mostly the same, so this is more of a simple remaster than a major rework. Still, the package has plenty to offer, especially for someone experiencing the game for the first time. What I liked most is the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mafia 2 is, by far, one of my favourite games I've ever played. I've played the original dozens of times—it's simply brilliant. This Definitive Edition? Not so much. The fact they managed to take a game that was so enjoyable and destroy it with horrific optimisation, game-breaking bugs, and graphical glitches is astonishing. There really ought to be a notice on Steam stating that you're far better off buying the original version.

neutral · AI labelView post →People say GTA Vice City has the best video game soundtrack. But imo it's not even the best GTA soundtrack (IV is far better) but I'd say it's between Mafia II and Mafia III for best ever. Both are insanely good - III probably edges it for me
neutral · AI labelView post →I thinks its a good game but as a lot of other reviews state it is full of bugs. I had to redo a whole mission (after getting to the literal end of it) because of a bug and at one point I was getting triple dialogue that overlapped so I did not understand what anyone was saying. Story + gameplay very good, bugs very bad.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really don't see the point of this remaster. All the saves from the classic Mafia 2 still work, the graphics changes are barely noticeable, and it's honestly better to just play the original.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →“nothing better than pu$$y and booze“ - Joe Barbaro If it’s on sale get it. It’s worth it for the story alone. I genuinely feel sorry for anyone who hasn’t experienced this masterpiece. There is a few bugs here and there but nothing game breaking.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to complete both Mafia I and II before moving on to the newest release, and finishing Mafia II: Definitive Edition felt like an important checkpoint in that journey. Overall, I liked it a lot. The story still holds up extremely well — strong characters, memorable moments, and that classic Mafia atmosphere that pulls you in chapter by chapter. Vito’s rise, the pacing, and the soundtrack all remind you why this game is still talked about years later. That said, the Definitive Edition…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →remaster is bad. Mafia 1 was great this not so much. controls clunky graphics ehh. First time playing mafia games and mafia 1 was fantastic, good graphics, controls on point, story awesome. This is a big let down and feel like im forcing myself to play through. I hope who ever did the remaster does not ever touch another game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If Mafia: Definitive Edition is a classic, this is its semi-disabled cousin. Story is solid, but absolutely everything else is worse, badly optimised and half-cooked.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The stuttering while driving is experience ruining. I'm giving up at Chapter 3 and going to give Mafia II (Classic) a try. I don't remember this game running so poorly in the original, outside of PhysX issues.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The new game is Mafia II DE, but it doesn’t feel as definitive as Mafia DE…..I expected similar graphics tbh and the small subtitles is making it hard to follow along sometimes 😅 I like the visual approach to tutorials tho!
neutral · AI labelView post →The gameplay felt inferior to the first game, but the story was enjoyable.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've heard stories in the past that this game was a buggy mess on pc and the original version was even worse. For the most part i personally had no issues with the game however i don't know if that's due to the fact that the game has been fixed or i just got lucky. Take that into consideration when playing the game. Mafia 2 is great. Once again the immersion is top notch, the music is great and the car handling is top tier, but just like the mafia 1 definitive edition, the gunplay is bad…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've moved to the Definitive Edition after playing the original several times. It's still a classic, one of the most immersive movie experiences I've played. I play this through every Christmas - from the moment Vito leaves the army and gets out of the taxi near his home, it's snowing and 'Let it Snow' is playing in the background, & it always feels like a Christmas setting, in the same way that Bruce Willis's Die Hard is a Christmas movie to some. And the further you get into the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →game, story is so awesome i really fall in love but the optimization is like sh1t and game always drops when u using car even if you re using strong pc like me and AI IS SO F**KING DISGUSTING
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I’d honestly only buy this if you only have a PC. Both the DE and Classic version is included in the bundle, but unfortunately I’ve had a few issues getting them running on my rig. DE has a lot of pop in and extra bloom, and Classic likes to crash upon startup. Much prefer the original 360 version
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game, unlike the Mafia 1 Definitive Edition, feels more like a remaster then a remake. It's essentially the same game just with a new set of paint, which means it's a blast to play. The only downside I have for this game is that the fov is very close to the character and in many instances, it feels like you can barely see what's going on around you. Other then that, I believe this is a great game, and I definitely recommend it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →buggy mess and barley an improvement from the original, story's good but ♥♥♥♥ this remaster.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Quite poor remaster. Visual improvements are minimal, there are a few new bugs that weren't present in the original and never got fixed. Stick with "Classic" version that comes bundled with "Definitive Edition".
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →10/10 Family friendly Christmas adventure that teaches all the essential skills a child needs. Just don't let the kids see the playboy mags, cool game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mafia is always a must-play for those who enjoy story oriented games. Except mafia 3, we don't talk about that one. Fair warning on the DLCs though, they are crap. Getting the best score on them which is tied to achievements is very RNG heavy, idk what muppet designed them but it's clear the devs of Mafia 2 weren't involved.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A light remake — worth playing if you love the story Mafia II: Definitive Edition is not a great remake, it still has many "old" points: simple gameplay, some outdated mechanics and many bugs/technical issues. However, if you love the story, classic mafia atmosphere, character drama, gangster setting, the game is still worth playing, especially if you have never played the original. However, if you are looking for a "new", modern, open and expansive experience, you should consider carefully.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Does anyone want a GOG code for Mafia II? That's a pretty good game.
neutral · AI labelView post →I think this mafia 2 is the best than other series. real female character, good main character Vito, Fun to have many weapons, have apartment to change clothes and garage, armor truck ⛟ for playing around holding polices. Fun game I'm not disappointed to buy this game. its worthy. I play mafia 2 classic too but its freeze and crash. I have no problem to play definitive edition. 👍
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of my all time favourite games and the best game in the Mafia series (So far) Mafia II has aged like a fine wine and the definitive edition runs and plays smooth as butter. Extremely quotable voice acting work throughout and with the original version releasing in 2010 its crazy the level and attention to detail for many things you can interact with in the games environment that put a lot of other open world modern releases to shame. Highly recommend for new fans of the series!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →❌ Not Recommended I finished Mafia II: Definitive Edition completely and even completed all achievements, but I still honestly didn’t enjoy the game that much. The story is okay and the atmosphere is decent, but overall the gameplay felt outdated and repetitive at times. A lot of missions just felt like driving from point A to point B with not much variety or excitement in between. Even though I pushed through to 100% achievements, it never really clicked with me or made me want to replay it.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The main game is a masterpiece, the DLC's on the other hand are too boring, imo.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →cinema game, looks like a game straight outta rockstar for a 2010 even remastered, just a good nostalgic game i grew up with and i always loved it
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mafia II: Definitive Edition 🤌 41 Hours Easy My favorite in the series, typically like to play this game in the winter season for the intro of the game. The story is amazing and the gameplay is fun as ever. The way police interact with you in this game is cool as well. Makes miss the Godfather.
positive · AI labelView post →⭐ Overall Rating: 10/10 Mafia II is, without a doubt, the crown jewel of the entire trilogy. From the characters to the music, everything just hits perfectly. For a remastered 2010 game, the graphics look shockingly good. The chemistry between Vito and Joe is honestly one of the best parts. Their dialogue is so natural and entertaining that it almost feels like you’re the silent third wheel riding around with them. The story really kicks into high gear near the end (no spoilers), but even…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I haven’t game since Thursday, so gonna end my Sunday with a little game time in Mafia II DE 🫡
neutral · AI labelView post →The game is great, it's hard to decide which is better, the first or the second, but as for the Definitive Edition, it's just awful, the game lags and freezes. I searched the internet and realized that the problem is with the edition, not the computer. The computer is powerful, the drivers too. They just made the edition as unoptimized as possible, while the first Definitive Edition is just great in terms of optimization and graphics. That's why I gave it this rating.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wrap on Mafia II! Good time, for sure. ✅ Ups the stakes from the 1st game ✅ Bigger, better action beats ✅ And the ending? Damn But it’s not great. It’s overrated. ❌ Insanely buggy ❌ Awful slate of DLC ❌ Story does a lot of the same things as the original… only worse
neutral · AI labelView post →After Mafia 1 DE, this just ended up being a big disappointment. The gun play is bad and the game was really buggy throughout. The story didn't really grip me unlike in Mafia 1, many of the characters were just annoying. When you die you can get set back tens of minutes depending on the situation.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Criminal drama as it's supposed to be: realistic, bold, dark, humorous at times, but ruthless in its nature. About 50% of the game is driving between mission objectives through the city. Luckily, driving has actual weight and inertia, and different cars genuinely behave differently. The music is on point. Mission tracks are precisely picked to match the current mood, and you also have 3 stations packed with awesome retro classics. Shooting is pretty arcade, but manageable with a controller.…

neutral · AI labelView post →Mafia 2 is a linear story about an American immigrant, Vito Scaletta. The plot offers big emotions, the characters in the game are unique, but the real deal-breaker is the original 1940's soundtrack. The game itself does not give the player many options besides continuing the storyline, but it really manages to provide the 1940's vibe. Altohugh the game is approximately 10 hours long - not counting the trash DLC's of course - you'll find yourself coming back to this title every 2 - 3 years.…
