What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 282 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (27,367 of 32,127 positive).
Many players say the game is fun but plagued by constant crashes. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note that community patches can help but are not always effective. [4][5][6] A few players mention that recent review bombing is due to Discord drama unrelated to the game. [7]

Great game, but absolutely terrible technical state. Constant crashes, does not work for longer than 10 minutes. DO NOT BUY.

This is an extremely difficult game to not recommend, because I LOVE the actual game. It's got a very simple basic set of tools that you can do tons of things with and combo in crazy ways, the story is charming and fun, and it is one of the best magic games ever made IMO. The issue is that the current version available on steam is an utter nightmare to get working. First time I downloaded it the game crashed before …

Game crashes constantly, and loading between chapters also crashes/jams. There have been no updates since 2018, so a fix is never going to come. Unplayable, do not waste your time and money.
Summarised from 34 of the 387 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 11, 2026. How summaries are made
22% of the 282 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Magicka. The complaint that keeps coming up: frequent crashes make the game nearly unplayable. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
An early incomplete version of Magicka was named Game of the Year 08 at the Swedish Game Awards 2008. On release, the game suffered criticism for its many bugs, crashes and glitches along with lag and connectivity issues with their multiplayer servers, which forced the developers to release a number of patches to try and address these issues. Magicka received "mixed or average" reviews, according to review aggregator Metacritic. Eurogamer gave the game 8/10. PC Gamer gave the game a 69/100. As of January 2012, the game has sold 1.3 million copies worldwide; over 4 million expansion packs have been sold, with Magicka: Vietnam having reached over 500,000 sales. It sold over 200,000 copies in…

Linux native builds are so buggy and glitchy and never work right. Always some combination of: - No sound - Old outdated version missing content and incompatible online - Controllers don't work - Crashes, doesn't launch at all - Horrific FPS - Cutscenes don't play - Weird game breaking softlocks and logic errors, like critical items not spawning and dialogue not triggering -…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Teamwork games? Like Rematch or Foxhole. (This isn't about co-op with 4 friends games like PEAK or RV There Yet, Borderlands or Magicka) # Stage 1 - purely individualistic games In many games - COD comes to mind - you can just bust into a room and solo everyone. That's individualistic gameplay, where other players are merely pedestrians in a saga where you are the main character. # Stage 2 - shallow teamwork Then there's games that have **"** _teamwork_ **"** that boils down to…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is fun, but there are frequent crashes, that ruin the experience. Community patch is a must.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tbh, it's unacceptable that Steams offers this game on the Store. The game crashes every 5 to 10 minutes of gameplay consistently. I tried it with a controller, without one, skipping cutscenes, changing settings, etc. There's not even a clear "when you do this, you crash" concept. The game crashes on the most random moments. It crashed on the main menu, it crashed during the opening cutscene, it crashed after completing a level and during the completion of a level. At the end, I discovered…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Crashes constantly, basically unplayable. The original version 10 years ago wasn't the most stable piece of software, but usually you could actually play it for the most part. But at some point, some update broke everything. Don't buy this.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Magicka is great, but it has been bugged as F**k since launch. If you want to fix the game, go here: https://github.com/Alexander-Aue-Johr/magicka-patch Seriously, this game is so unbelievably bugged that the crashes don't just crash the game anymore — they apparently decided to take my entire INTERNET CONNECTION down with them. I'm not even joking. Magicka crashes to desktop, and somehow my whole connection dies at the same time. I have to reboot my routers just to get my internet back.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My ideal moveset for Nue across any game would be something akin to Dota 2 Invoker, Nightreign Recluse, or the game Magicka. Mixing elements together to get spells. Nues entire brainspace is dedicated to memorizing these combinations and there's no room for anything else.
neutral · AI labelView post →Really fun classic. Note: The game suffed an update that introduced frequenct crashes. Check pcgamingwiki's page on Magicka for a fan patch that fixes this.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Remember: Elden Ring, the 2022 Game of the Year, runs on the same 2009 engine that Demon's Souls ran on for the PlayStation 3. And Helldivers 2, the breakout multiplayer game of 2024, runs on the same 2011 engine as Magicka.
neutral · AI labelView post →Crashes when trying to load into a game. I wanted to see if I still hated this game, as I originally hated its keyboard and mouse controls when I played it around a decade ago, but I figured I'd try it with a controller. It seems they're selling a game that most people can't get to even function, and that includes me. Valve needs to start actually removing nonfunctional games from the Steam store, to force the developers to actually make sure the product they're selling is something that…

It constantly crashes, freezes, hangs, etc. Not even the fixes available online worked for my friends and I. We made it once through Chapter 1 without crashing, and were unable to get beyond the beginning of Chapter 2 because of the games instability. I genuinely have no clue how I managed to get to Chapter 11 a few years ago, and part of me thinks it has to do with more modern OS's…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best games you cannot play anymore. At it's core, Magicka is one of the most fun co-op games you can play. Chaotic, and absolutely hilarious at times. At it's current state it is completely unplayable, I have no idea why but this game just crashes every single time and at seemingly random intervals with no obvious trigger. Do not buy at the current state, it is unplayable.

positive · AI labelView post →Beautiful game. But unfortunately, it crashes non-stop as it just isn't compatible with modern hardware anymore, and there is no reliable way to fix it. If you like the game, I'd say it's not worth buying it on steam, although you might push through if you don't mind re-launching it every 5-10 minutes.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i loooove this game, but it crashes to the point where it's completely unplayable. it's so old it will never get a fix :(
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I spent hours to find this and this is the best fix I have found. I bought this years ago but I have recently decided to replay it and achievement hunt. The first link is some sort of patch which doubles the RAM capacity in game from 2GB to 4GB and the second link seems to be the only way to limit the frame rate of the game. That software is not intuitive though. https://github.com/pj1234678/MagickaFix/releases/tag/v1.4 https://www.guru3d.com/download/rtss-rivatuner-statistics-server-download
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A classic Co-op game from 2011 and one of my favourite games of all time. Sadly, its not practical to play this game at time of writing. While there are a number of fixes out there (both involving community patches and downgrading the game version). I haven't found one that works while trying to play in multiplayer. if you are considering picking up this game be aware that you are in for some serious troubleshooting and frequent crashes.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the core gameplay is really fun, and the writing is charming (if a little dated), but, at least at the time of writing in 2026, the game does not run well at all without installing a fan-made patch. without it, you'll crash at loading screens constantly. this would be acceptable for abandonware, but half of the content in this game is locked behind paywalls, be it DLC or microtransactions. this is a fully deprecated piece of software that will still happily charge you, both up-front and after…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of my all time favorite games. Shame though that what ever changed the game is unplayable multiplayer and crashes non stop. Perhaps try playing local co op if multiplayer does not work. Sadly negative review until (if ever) the multiplayer is fixed : (
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Was a great game, both alone and with friends. But now its unstable at best and straight up unplayable at worst.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's quite a miserable experience to run this game on modern hardware, and even more miserable to attempt to beat it given the brutal difficulty curve, but I would be remiss if I didn't recognize it does more things well than poorly. To be fair, I don't see myself playing it anymore. It didn't really click with me. The humor and lore/plot are a bit cringey and get old very soon. It's not terrible, just not great either. But what really didn't land with me were the controls, and consequently,…

positive · AI labelView post →Magicka is ze greatest vizard disaster simulator ever made. You press buttons, summon death, explode friends, heal enemies, and somehow call zis “teamwork.” I, Vlad, who is absolutely not vampire, approve very much. Ze robes are stylish, ze magic is powerful, and ze survival rate is deeply insulting. One moment you are hero, next moment you are smoking pile of regret because friend tried “helping.” 10/10. Vould explode again. Still not vampire.

For jist using it, I would suggest looking up the game Materia Magicka. It's a MUD played through an SSH client. Just learning how to get access to and play the game would be a pretty simple to follow lesson on the basics. Plus it's fun!

There are helpful guides on how to downgrade your version to one that actually runs, I had no technical issues in a full co-op playthrough when playing 1.4.16.0 version. Also note that this game has a hefty amount of DLC, some of which have achievements and have their own issues with running correctly in present day. Completionists may want to avoid this game.
