What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 193 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (233 of 344 positive).
Some players criticize the voice acting and dialogue as poorly executed. [1][2][3]

It tries hard to be like Portal by adopting some of the features that made Portal a success, it has the omnipresent baddy talking, boxes and buttons, repetitive environments and weird scribbles on the walls which hint that the final goal may be an elaborate ruse, but it fails. At first it did give me an interesting feeling, like being a rat in a maze, but that did not last very long. The learning curve is okay, but …

Sorry programers, I hate giving bad reviews, but I loved portal and portal 2 and this is no where near that epic level. The game uses magnetic guns to move around and manipulate blocks, which had the potential to be epic and was fun at times. The puzzles are fairly easy to figure out what to do, but it is doing it that is so frustrating. If I could have saved whenever I chose, it would be better, but constantly …

I'd say 6 out of 10. It's a great game and I recommend it. The gameplay and story are quite entertaining (though sometimes a little slow paced for my taste) but you can read about that in other reviews. TLDR at the end. [EDIT: Dev reply in comments] Here I want to concentrate on one annoying fact: You can't save yourself. The game saves automatically (usually only at the beginning of a chamber) in ONE savegame. This …

It is a successful mix of Magrunner and Portal with a cold war attitude in it. The choices are actually matters. Alters the chambers to come and the final outcome too. I got constant 60 FPS, so the optimization is really good. There's no graphical glitches or bugs that I encountered so far. And the story with the 9 possible endings is really great. If the devs will integrate an editor and Steam Workshop support, …

I love puzzle games, especially ones that get your brain working. Magnetic: Cage Closed certainly did just that. As the game progressed there were some puzzles that pissed me off and had me angry, This is a good game, but it's biggest downfall is the voice acting. It's horrendous. They could've done so much better.

Players who liked Magnetic: Cage Closed talk about engaging puzzles that challenge the brain; those who didn't talk about no manual saving; auto-save only at chamber starts. Which matters more to you?

Saving me hours of rotoscoping (ie: making it possible at all, because I simply wouldn’t) is the kind of machine learning I crave.

neutral · AI labelView post →This is poorly made first-person puzzle with not a single idea of it's own - it cribs from Portal and Magrunner without being anywhere near as polished as either. Graphics are 'crusty' or 'flat' looking, transitions between puzzles are slow and boring (and often lengthy), physics are dodgy-as-hell with things sticking in the floor/walls and there's NO RESTART for a puzzle (you have to quit and restart an area from scratch) The story is staggeringly unoriginal, the voicework is poor and the…

I for one usually love these games and want as many to come out as possible, if they aren't short or feel like a genuine copy of better versions of the genre. I found the game fairly short, about 9 hours of gameplay. The voice acting is okay, kind of annoying at times, but nontheless better than nothing. I made sure to turn any music off for a better gaming experience. The game was originally announced for March 2015 Steam…

In the description we can read No playthrough is the same - Each choice has an impact on what comes next. New secrets and paths are just waiting for players to find them and that's a lie. While the game technically ends differently and lets us learn different aspects of the story depending on 2-3 choices, nearly all of the puzzles are exactly the same. Speaking of different endings: overwriting the same…

Yes, It’s basically Portal but it’s different enough to call itself it’s own game in a genre that there isn’t much competition in. You wake up in your personal cell in a place called Facility 7. Given a chance to be the lab rat for the megnetic gun prototypes. There are some very clever puzzles and some very frustrating ones as well. The point of each puzzle is to turn on switches which power on the exit door. In some puzzles there's more than one switch required. The magnetic gun will get stronger as you progress through the game and the levels…

So here is another one of those rip-offs of Portal. The title is different and the game mechanics in itself are different, but other than that, it's a Portal game. You've got this gun which can either push a block away from you or pull it towards you. What do you do with this block? You put it on buttons, in order to finish the ... wait for it ... test chamber. neutral · AI labelView post →It tries so hard to be Portal. You have a magnetic gun that manipulates your environment, you put boxes on buttons. That's where the similarities end. Puzzles are simple and linear. Difficulty only lies in avoiding traps, not solving puzzles. There's too much waiting around listening to forced dialog that has no baring on the game mechanic. Grab it if it's on sale and you need a Portal-esque fix; though there's better titles you should try first.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is addictive. Bearing more than a passing resemblance to the Portal games, the player is thrown into a "do these tests or die" scenario. Scrawled warnings on the wall start to appear before long and the game gets far more deadly and the puzzles more twisted. The functioning mechanic of Left button to push, Right button to pull works well, but it can take some practice to avoid being pulled / pushed in the wrong direction and oblivion. Some levels are timed and these can take numerous…

No lateral thinking here. If you like puzzles and you've a yearning for something after completing both Portal games, buy The Talos Principle instead. Or even The Turing Test. Or Magrunner. Not this. God the voicing is terrible. I'm guessing the dialogue hasn't translated brilliantly to start with, but the voice direction more than the…

Pros: - Someone who enjoyed Portal and wanted to play a cheaper cousin would be satisfied with this game. - I guess the magnet gun is cool? - The soundtrack was enjoyable. It sounded tense, which I guess fit well with the atmosphere the game was going for. Cons: - The controls are so annoying! Controlling the magnetic forces while in the air was very…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have been waiting for this game a long time. Something that would convey the same feeling I had when I first played Portal, but NOT Portal - something fresh, a new take on the 1st person puzzle genre, preferably seasoned with a nice dystopian story. Magnetic does all that. Fresh puzzles, intriguing stories, a sense of emergency, dark humor, so yes, I deeply enjoy this game, and I recommend it with pleasure. The Disclaimer is, I played in beta, too.

neutral · AI labelView post →This game is... well, it's a much worse First-Person-Puzzler than most of the genre. It's like they looked at some FPPs, said "hey, we can do that too!" Then proceeded to mimic Starry Night with a two year old's dexterity and finger paints. The gameplay is alright. There are some... questionable design choices. The way blocks are drawn to you, the way you move/jump with the magnetic propulsion... it's clunky. Realistic, some may say, but I think it suffers for it. The general idea with a…

The gameplay and pacing feels like Portal, which isn't bad because Portal did a lot of things right. There are still enough differences to make it a good, fun game. Instad of making portals you have sort of a gravity gun like in Half-Life 2, where you manipulate boxes, extendable platforms and help yourself make crazy jumps. A narrative guides you through the levels and advances the…

When I first started the game, I really liked the idea of the game and the story of the game was very interesting. Gradually, new tests came and I learned new capabilities, but after passing basic tests, the game process, like most of the other puzzle games, became very boring and repetitive. The game's graphics are not so defined and it makes you tired after a few tests especially the dim lighting. But what kept me…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The actual gameplay was good I thought the downsides that I noticed was that there was too much downtime of crawling through connections hearing storyline occassionally along the way (they sould have condensed much of it together to make the game have a little faster pace). Another lackluster aspect is the male's voicework he tries but it definitly feels like he is reading a script instead of reacting to events. The feel of the game was big time inspired by portal which is ok (some people don't…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Magnetic: Cage Closed is a first person physics puzzle platformer that tries to imitate Portal a little too hard. Unfortunately it lacks the charm and fun gameplay that made Portal so enjoyable. The story is rather similar to Portal but unfortunately the writing is nowhere near as good. To exacerbate the issue the game also suffers from some pretty bad voice acting. The core gameplay is also very similar to Portal. You process through a series of testing chambers while solving some simple…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this game thinking it was a puzzle game similar to Portal or Talos Principle. However, about 6 hours into the game I had just experienced a lot of platformer action and no 'real' puzzles. There were a few instances where you had to stop and figure out where to go, but the vast majority of time was spent trying to time jumps and using the magnetic gun to shoot or fetch boxes. If your expectations are anything like mine, I would not recommend it.

If you take forever, they'll either say "I'm going to fill the room with chlorine gas in 5 minutes" or they'll tell you they're disappointed by the time you get to the end of the level. The mechanics with the gravity is very similar to Magrunner but I would say that I prefer this game because it's easier to understand and overall, it's a solid Portal 2 clone. The only problems with this game is that once you chose something, you can't get back to try different choices (for example, the end of the game ....) and that it's really short…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In Magnetic: Cage Closed, you pretty much play a rat in test chamber. Not much of a story, except your a prisoner who got volunteers for testing. Some ambient music, but not really good. Story is ok. Controls are just plain aweful imo. It is like playing a hard level in Portal, but less enjoyable. I would just stick to modding the hell out of Portal 2, than this game. Worth $5-$10. Stars 3.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a pretty fun game overall. I hated the one timed level, but other than that it was pretty satisfying. You will have to restart levels a few times due to death. The only other thing that was annoying is sometimes the gun with the platform doesn't perform as expected when you jump...it can be inconsistent - once you get the third level gun it's a lot better. Good game though short.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love Portal and Portal 2. I also love discovering Portalesques, especially ones that capture the same tone and wonder as the games they're based on. This is the former, but it's definitely not the latter. One of the most important aspects of a Portalesque, to me, is whoever the narrator is. They need to be an expert at the backhanded compliment, so that players are too amused to realize they've been insulted. This game's narrators are just...awful. There are no backhanded compliments,…
