What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 182 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (1,708 of 1,880 positive).
Players say Maniac is a chaotic, top-down crime roguelike that channels classic GTA mayhem. [1][2][3] Many find it fun for short bursts but shallow and repetitive after a few hours. [4][5][6] Some reviewers note technical issues like settings not saving between sessions. [7]

The game is really fun, but there’s one major issue — the settings don’t save between sessions. Every time I start the game, I have to reconfigure everything from scratch. It’s time-consuming and takes away from the overall experience. Please fix this so settings are saved automatically!

🤡 💀💣 MANIAC 💣💀🤡 ⭐ 8/10 — “This game made me question morality, physics, and why there’s a flamethrower in a baby stroller.” I booted up MANIAC expecting some light fun. Five minutes later, I’m shirtless, screaming at my monitor, riding a shopping cart into a gas station while juggling Molotovs and somehow being chased by a priest, a clown, and a guy with a toilet seat on his head. Plot? Yes. The plot is: “What …

A completely unhinged, violent rampage of a game. Extremely addicting. If you love Grand Theft Auto, Postal 1 and Vampire Survivors, I think you’ll have a great time with this. There is some very dark humor in this game. Children (and babies) can be killed. With a different game that might feel like taking things too far, but this game is so cartoony and over the top that it’s hard to take that seriously. My only …

Maniac is a chaotic, top-down crime roguelite that feels like a “cause trouble and survive the consequences” simulator. The game is at its best when you stop treating it like a mission-based sandbox and start treating it like an arcade run where everything is trying to shut you down. Each run quickly turns into a chain reaction: you start small, something escalates, and suddenly you’re improvising under pressure. …

If you get it for like 3 bucks or so, it's worth it. Anything over that, no. It has the depth of an Atari 2600 game. But it's fun once a week for 10 minutes, for about 10 weeks.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's fine for a little bit, but gets boring very fast. The game has one map, no RNG on placements or NPCs. Unlocking new characters just mean to do the same map all over again to get unlocks and perks.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is a simple game and I'm almost 60 so it reminds me of the simple games in the 80's that were allot of time in my youth.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a modernized GTA I but only if you just want to do chaos runs. They made it a rougelike where there's a time limit and characters, abilities and unlocks are behind certain tasks, and progression is gated by money. The money is also separated per character so progression on that character can only be made using that character. I think it's fun, but there's too much grind to unlock stuff. It just didn't hook me enough like other rougelike like VS or megabonk to continue playing it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Relaxing Gameplay, love it
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm going to go with NOT RECOMMEND for this one even though it's quite nostalgic for me. I remember playing the original top down GTA games and this is a spiritual successor in pretty much every way, just with improved graphics and better gunplay. HOWEVER it's just so grindy and confusing. You have kill/collect challenges to complete in order to unlock other characters, but the things you're suppose to kill/collect aren't very well defined during gameplay. All the explosion and shooting…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In theory, this is a wonderful idea - mixing the nostalgic free roaming massacre gameplay that we know and love from the first two GTAs and similar titles with semi-rogue-lite "survivors" mechanics. "Just one more run", amirite??? In practice, it does work like that, but it's fun only for the first 3 to 5 hours. This is enough to complete all the primary goals of all 6 unlockable characters. After that, the game's deficiencies become apparent: There is little to do in the game once you endure…

(I have memories of this scene because it always crashed here if my SoundBlaster settings weren't right, LOL.)
positive · AI labelView post →These are the foundational games that made me. Mystic Quest helped me understand rpg logic. Maniac Mansion was my introduction to a cursor. Robotrek fell into my lap buying a cartridge labeled 'Starfox' on masking tape at a fleamarket. Each game holds lasting memories and cemented my game interests
positive · AI labelView post →Either the original Final Fantasy (a game I played the heck out of) or the NES port of Maniac Mansion (the only game I got into speedrunning). 🤔
