What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 96 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (114 of 138 positive).
Players praise the game's atmosphere, story, and music, calling it a classic FMV adventure. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note the puzzles are unintuitive and require a walkthrough. [4][5][6] Many appreciate the enhanced edition's improvements and compatibility. [7][8][9]

If I was to sum Noctropolis up in two words, I would say it's "beautifully one-dimensional". Initially I planned to give somewhat of a tentative recommendation based almost entirely on the game's gorgeous environments and striking atmosphere, but as I went on playing I found that beyond that there was nothing there for it. The writing is abysmal, and even if I tried to look at it through a more tongue-in-cheek lens …

One of the better FMV adventure games from the 90's, with a remastered soundtrack that sounds amazing. The game hasn't aged as well as classics like Grim Fandango, Monkey Island, and other adventure titles; the graphics are dated, the voice acting is, at times, difficult to hear, and some of the puzzles are so tough that you may need to consult gamefaqs for help. But the storyline, dialogue, artstyle, musical score, …

I played this game when it first came out in the 90s, and loved it. In fact I've still got the original CD and instructions, but setting up DOSbox to play it was troublesome, and just never got around to beating it. Ever. So as soon as I saw this on Steam, I couldn't resist grabbing it. Not only does it run flawlessly, but it also has controller support, improved mouse support (i.e. scroll wheel is now supported), …

I loved the hell out of this game when I originally had it on CD Rom. I mean, it's an adventure game in an original comic book universe! Heck, the main character is LITERALLY sucked into a comic book. However, even back then, I realized it: -Had really confusing, moon-logic puzzles. -An uninteresting mystery that only becomes progressively nonsensical (even by bad comic book standards) -Incredibly hokey …

Summarised from 34 of the 109 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 10, 2026. How summaries are made
83% of the 96 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Noctropolis. The complaint that keeps coming up: puzzles are confusing and require a guide. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Charles Ardai of Computer Gaming World, while approving of the game's visual style and detailed art, criticized that the game has a simplistic interface and uses juvenile shock value in the form of gratuitous violence and sexual content in order to distract from the lack of substance to the story. He added, "It's also highly derivative, both of actual comic books and of other computer games." A reviewer for Next Generation highly praised the game's story, abstract and challenging puzzles, comic-book style backgrounds, digitized character animation, soundtrack, and dark atmosphere. Though he remarked that some of the dialogue is silly for a Mature-rated game, and that many of the puzzles…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Noctropolis is another re-release of a classic game by Nightdive studios that's more than just DOS game running in DOSbox. Before the review starts, I should say that I have no nostalgia for this game. I did not play it when it came out, and did in fact not have a PC back then. This was my very first time playing it. Noctropolis is a mid 90's FMV adventure game. A style of games that has a, mostly justified, bad reputation. Most of them were really not very good, and the only reason why…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Also in contention for Most Adventure Game Interface: Noctropolis
neutral · AI labelView post →Without using a walkthrough, the game becomes hilariously long. The puzzles are completely unintuitive, and items blend so seamlessly into the background that they’re nearly impossible to spot; even with random clicking, you’ll still miss things. Many objectives are triggered by scripts with no actual sense, making the whole experience feel hollow. The only reason that pushed me to the end was the misguided hope of seeing Stiletto’s boobies, only to get tricked by Drealmer. An absolute waste of…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Noctropolis is a classic full-motion video (FMV) point & click adventure cut right out of the mid 1990's. Originally developed by Flashpoint Productions and then published by Electronic Arts, it wasn't until the late quarter of 2015 that Night Dive Studios acquired the rights of the game and was able to recover the source code from the original developer. After much effort to port the game to more modern systems, this Enhanced Edition came to life in January, 2016. The story follows a book…

neutral · AI labelView post →A true classic, Short but sweet also this version is uncut/unedited in video but the UI and puzzles changed to make it, more simplistic for modern gamers, personally I found it tooo easy in this version also i couldnt find any commentary of any sorts but this game, ive had since it was on the store shelf brand new! Awesome game, awesome genre, RIP this style when win 10 takes full control all is doomed BUY this game and more like it you wont regret it!!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →FMV game that has been Enhanced properly. Whenever we tend to visit our nostalgic old adventure games to reply them , we fear going back to fmv games (full motion video) because they are a pain to get it to run properly in the modern os and you can always expect them to have bad elements of adventure games aka lack of humor, death , miss a item and you get stuck forever, horrible acting in fmv etc. So i came across this game Noctropolis Enhanced edition and had the same fears starting to play…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They were the worst of times, they were the blurst of times. The 90's were an interesting time for comics. The speculator market had been decimating them for the most part. Nothing was dumber than thinking comic books were get rich quick schemes (well, other than baseball cards). Issue #1's - crap like Ultraforce - sold by the truck load, making companies think "well, if 1 million was sold, then we'll have to print 1 million more for issue #2!". Except that never turned out to be the case.…

neutral · AI labelView post →KAMGUSTA'S MINI REVIEW It's an "old school" point-and-click adventure game. A bit too "old school", with cluncky interface, obscure enigmas and absymal graphics. Keep in mind masterpieces such as "Beneath a Steel Sky", "Monkey Island 2", "Gabriel Knight 2" and "The Dig" were made in the same period, and they are way better than this one. Best played with mouse Recommended buy price: 1$ Score: 4/10
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's just like Arkham Asylum, except Batman is a random comic book nerd in a terrible cloak. Glorious 1990's cheesiness. I was forced to consult the guide (which helpfully comes with the game) a few times but it's not overly esoteric and mostly makes sense. Works fine on Steam Deck.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Noctropolis, developed by Flashpoint Productions and later remastered by Nightdive Studios, is a rare artifact of the mid-1990s adventure game era—a fusion of gothic comic book theatrics, surreal dream logic, and traditional point-and-click mechanics. It represents a period when developers were experimenting with narrative tone and live-action elements in ways that now feel both nostalgic and bizarre. The remastered edition restores the original game for modern audiences with improved…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What a unique game. Noctropolis is one of those obscure adventure games from the 90s, that was featured in gaming magazines of the era, generally with a full page ad showing something a posted that resembled a hybrid between Batman and Elvira. You will quickly find out that the game was developed by most of the same team as older adventure games like Countdown and Martian Memorandum. Expect similar gameplay and interface as those games. From the get go, you will be presented with an…

neutral · AI labelView post →A bit of point & click history, "Noctrop" (it was a DOS game afterall) works nicely on Steam. Sure, it's a little bit clunky by today's standards but it (still) gives me a Candyman vibe when playing which I appreciate. Never beat it when I was younger but just replayed and it wasn't too difficult and I enjoyed seeing the story through to the end, achievements are a nice addition which helped motivate me to progress. A raw 90's point & click, even if a little simplistic compared to its kin but…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Holy hell, I remember having had this on Cd way back in the days, back when FMV adventure games were the rage. So glad I found this one again! It is not without its flaws, it does suffer from the same 90's adventure game logic in certain parts, and there are a lot of instant death/game over scenes, but over all, it is a very enjoyable game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This gem from the point-and-click, FMV days holds up surprisingly well. Good story, fun puzzles, and a very tongue-in-cheek approach. I got sucked into Noctroplis along with Peter and had a lot of fun. Thanks for resurrecting this game, Night Dive!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game it's basically trying to have a batman kind of story which it wouldn't be a problem in itself but the story it's full of plot holes , the game it's basically impossible without a playthrough and even then the gameplay really aged like milk , the controls are horrible you basically have a panel that you can open with actions like "look , interact , use" and you have to open this panel multiple times and use every single option on every single object to see if you can do something with…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Old 1994 point and click, has some... out of touch and severely outdated dialogue options. Also there is the classic case of missing items you'll need WAY down the line if you do not scan the area. A challange without a guide for sure. Also there is 1 instance where you can use an item, leave the area and you are basically soft locked as the item disappears after 1 use but you won't be able to reenter the area without it. SO MAKE SURE YOU SAVE OFTEN. SPOILERS Please be aware there is…

neutral · AI labelView post →A cool and sometimes sexy 90s FMV, I really enjoyed all the crazy characters we meet along the way. The location designs are very unique looking and have their own music tracks. I do wish I would have found a use for the divorce papers, I kept offering those to everyone I met but no one wanted them. :( The music at the Cygnus lobby is an absolute banger of a track!

positive · AI labelView post →Honestly... I bought this game when I realized it was on Steam for the sole reason that my college roommate had it and I had never finished it all the way through. If you accept the fact that graphics/gameplay have (shockingly) improved exponentially since the early/mid-1990s, then I'd recommend this game as one you play every couple of years (4.4 hrs. constituted the full amount of time it took me to play this through from start to finish... with some of the story puzzles coming back to me…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have a massive weak spot for 1990s FMV games and I need it to be known that Noctropolis deserves a seat at the table with 7th Guest, Harvester, Toonstruck. Phantasmagoria (1 and 2), and Night Trap. Yes, Night Trap. If I ever need to convince my children that there really was ever such a thing as a simpler time, I will show them the absurdity of a typical 1990s FMV adventure game scene and they will understand. It'll just click and they'll get it. Noctropolis still rules and the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When I played this game 20-22 years ago It seemed great fun, but it's not held up very well. There are some good bits still, and a few puzzles that do make sense, but a lot that don't which was kind of how it worked back then. Unless you're mad for retro point and click, and it is on a sale, don't bother.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Extremely oldschool and yet still very much fun today. Aged surprisingly well for a FMV adventure due to the comic theme.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This great classic FMV adventure is fun for a number of reasons: 1. Interesting story and setting, on the serious side with occasional comedy 2. Great visuals for its time (the pixel art is a genuine pleasure to watch even in 2016) 3. Piles upon piles of interesting flavour text, going so far as describing architectural minutiae vividly, learnt quite a few new terms just by clicking around - if something looks interesting there's text making it even more so 4. Ridiculous and funny acting (par…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really liked the idea and the story of this game. Well acting, great characters and amazing atmosphere. But I had problems with the puzzles and picking items because it was hard to find and see the items and you have to do "look" on everything to find out which item can you pick. Because of the low graphic it was hard to discover items and that was a little annoying. And another problem i think it was the limited abilities of the main character, because he supposed to be Darksheer but his…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of those games where I wish that Steam had an "eh" rating; for every one thing that Noctropolis does right, it does two things backasswards. There are a few positives: the backgrounds are all drop-dead gorgeous, the FMV is cheesy in the expected-but-still-enjoyable-way, and there is a functional idea for a story buried...somewhere in there. The whole Dreamler segment is pure gold, too. My main gripe? The story stops making sense after a certain point, lmao, and if you're not used…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was really fun and silly. I dig it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is unfortunately very bad. I wanted to like it, but I can't: The general idea is cool but poorly executed, you are supposed to be a superhero but you dont get to use any superpowers, the main guy is totally lame, there are plot holes. At some point you get raped by a succubus because she wants to get pregnant for some reason (another plot hole) and you tell all that to your priest friend and he says Don't dwell on it, son....Right? No big deal! Who cares The gameplay really sucks, you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was an old point and click adventure that I bought when it originally came out in the mid-late 90s. I never actually had beat the game and got it on sale for $2.50 and just played through it. It... has NOT aged well. I still like a lot of the older point and click games. The acting is atrocious and very cringe inducing. Many of the dialogues are unskippable. The best thing I can say about it is that it was worth the $2.50 for nostalgia purposes. Outside of that, I am super thankful…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TROPE IS A NINE LETTER WORD Nostalgia. That, for me, is the operative word when talking about the 90s. I lived my adolescence in that period and, amongst a plethora of cultural landmarks, computer games such as Noctropolis had a strong impact in how I saw and experienced gaming in general. Just going back to those times, with this excellent Steam version, was worth the price of admission. If we factor in the art direction of Shaun Mitchell and the work of Owen Richardson on background art…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Noctropolis is a point and click adventure game and what gives it it's uniqueness is the "swallowed into a dark comic book" premise, the general 1990s vibe of many elements and the rated "R" content which is unusual for adventure games (with a few exceptions). The gameplay is pretty standard for adventure games and can require some extended reading of dialogue along with some pixel hunting. Many bits of dialogue are voiced but not all by quite a margin. The soundtrack is midi synthesized…
