What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 48 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (33 of 65 positive).
Some reviewers report persistent bugs, especially in multiplayer and campaign modes. [1][2][3] Several players find the campaign too reliant on RNG and the game lacking depth. [4][5][6]

I love Overboss! I own the board game physical, both it and Duel. I also played the Overboss digital demo quite a bit in anticipation of the full release. There were some bugs in the demo but I was hopeful they'd be fixed by launch; especially considering the release date got pushed back several times. Well, unfortunately that wasn't the case. This game wasn't ready for release. BUGS: Online desync issues. I played …

The single player game runs fine and is very similar to the board game. We have attempted to play seven or eight multiplayer games and have succeeded on possibly three occasions to complete them. Bugs include the game crashing at various points and not allowing you to proceed, the options for moves on the right hand side not appearing correctly, the tiles not displaying either in the market place or on an opponents …

Here to tip the scales back the other way, Most these reviews were when the game came out and it apparently had a bug then. As of this review I haven't had any problems at all. I have the board game in real life, and have all the Brotherwise Boss Monster related games also. Great games and lots of repeatability. Same can be said for this game here on steam. Plays just like the board game does. Multiplayer and solo …

All in all a cool concept but I'm getting absolutely railed in the easy mode campaign due to not being able to do missions. It basically asks you do do things like make a line of 3 or a 2x2 set of a specific terrain, and then the game just never gives you that terrain or proper tokens for it. Its rng and not really in a good way. That said, it is fun when you get what you want but you might burn through lives …

If you're a board game lover such as myself, than you'll love what they did with this game. every tile and monster has been brought to (semi)life. each moving in the old 8bit bouncy style. the music and sound effects add more life to the game. Its true to the original board game, no fancy gimmicks, no "Meta" nonsense, and definitely no Battlepass. Its a simple game with lots of replay-ability. even better with …

52% of the 48 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Overboss. The complaint that keeps coming up: many bugs at launch, some still present. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

neutral · AI labelView post →I like the game, and I love the board game, but this game is way too buggy. My friend and I tried to play each other 3 separate times, and every one of the games had bugs that rendered the rest of the match unplayable. Would be willing to re-buy the game if bugs are fixed that allows the player to complete a match.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is not what i though it would be. i thought it would be building a dungeon and then having adventurers come and try to pillage your dungeon like a digital version of boss monster but that does not seem to be the case. it seems to be just a game about placing terrain and then getting a score based on what you placed. Im sure there are people who will enjoy this game but its not for me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Idk if the game is bugged or what. But the single player campaign made no sense. Collect 4 of the same monster type on a tile but you dont get credit. The game is basically a Roguelike where you have hearts and if you fail objectives then you lose. The game doesnt tell you if you accomplished them or not till the very end. Sooo not sure if im doing something wrong or not but it seems pretty straight forward on what to do for these quests. Wanted to like this game and was excited to try it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Overboss is fixed! Overboss is fixed!!! It's a great implementation of the board game with a lot of visual flair. It's not quite Monster Couch or Dire Wolf when it comes to the flair, but it's a few steps above the majority of board game adaptations on here. It's unfortunate that the initial outpouring of negative reviews due to bugs may have cursed this game permanently. If you consider yourself at all a fan of board games like Cascadia or Calico from Flatout Games, Overboss carries the same…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like Overboss, but this should have been Early Access due to the bugs present. How do you release a game into 1.0 where the options menu button doesn't work when you enter windowed mode? https://youtu.be/8peT_3cAIoo
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR: Between Overboss and the old Boss Monster mobile app that was so bad they pulled it from stores, I cannot in good conscience ever give another dollar to Brotherwise Games, even for cardboard. They are openly hostile to players. _______________________ It's such a simple game. I have the game and its two-player sequel in cardboard. There's so little to it that honestly you can play it on Table Top Simulator without feeling like you needed automation. And this is what we got officially? A…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game was not at all what I expected, which is fine because I still enjoyed the gameplay. To release the game into 1.0 with as many bugs, though, is very discouraging. Seriously there are so many bugs that I can't even explain whats going on. Currently there is a mishap with my resolution and the game is permanently zoomed in which I can't even fix because the options menu does nothing when clicked. If you are expecting a fully fleshed out game then I would NOT recommend this game to anybody…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've seen the mixed reviews, but after playing the game post-patch, I can confidently say there's nothing wrong with it. Both single-player and multiplayer modes run flawlessly in my experience, and I honestly don’t understand the complaints. It seems like we're in a time where negativity and complaints often overshadow genuine quality. The game looks fantastic, plays smoothly, and the sound design is on point. What more can you ask for? On top of that, the makers have promised future updates…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Nintendo Switch eShop currently has a featured list called “Board Game Bonanza” and Overboss is featured in it! Always so cool to see.
neutral · AI labelView post →The core game is fun, but there is not a lot to it. Campaign mode is too rng. In a game like this you cannot do such specific goals, it becomes frustrating trying to have 3+ tiles of a kind and not getting a single one on a playthrough. Also, it feels like it needs more time in the oven. Sometimes you find bugs when loading a game or while switching screens, and it has some issues like the fact that you do not see your overal score anywhere, or the side quest screen which is a design mess and…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR this isn't worth picking up at full price unless you're a big fan of Brotherwise Games. It's functionally dead and there's no indication of it making a comeback. I have lots of things to say about the state of this game and the past and future of Brotherwise titles digitally, but all in all this is a game that really only will be for existing fans. Can it be fun? Absolutely. Will you be able to play online without having friends and/or searching for players on Forums or Discord? Probably…

positive · AI labelView post →Brotherwise Games doesn't have a Bluesky account yet, but I want to share something awesome: Overboss Duel! https://www.brotherwisegames.com/shop/overboss-duel Overboss Duel is a head-to-head tile-laying game where two players build terrain tiles and monsters on a shared map. It's really good. 1/2
positive · AI labelView post →I have played the physical board game many times, and have a general understanding of the rules off the top of my head. There is absolutely zero explanation of points, mechanics, etc. to be found. Even as someone who knows how the game works, I could only guess what this game wanted me to do to succeed.

neutral · AI labelView post →I love Overboss and play the physical game all the time. Got this to be an easier and quicker way to play with my wife. This is a "playable" adaptation. It lacks quality of life features like an undo button or being able to customize what tiles you would like to play with. Would not buy unless you really want a digital version. If the developers put in a little more effort could be a perfect adaptation, but I think they moved on to their next project.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really like this game! Its super simple to play and a great secondary game to have playing next to another game with loading times or lobbies. Not sure what all the hate is for. I love this game!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am so disappointed with. I have the physical board game (as well as the 2 player version) and I love it. I played the demo online with a friend and had no issues but the full release is riddled with bugs. We have had multiple game breaking bugs this evening, resulting in 2 hours of game play with no games finished. I'm going to hold out hope that this gets fixed but at the moment I am just thoroughly disappointed.

Another original gameplay where you have to try match tiles and monsters for get points and fullfill the requeriments of the map but I was expecting more on this game, feels slow and not very deep on content so have mix feelings with the game. And yes there are bugs but are not gamebreaking bugs, since the people reviews are so harsh I tend to give a positive on this…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Meh... I played the demo of this game for hours, I was expecting something a little different...I was hoping it would be more fleshed out in the full version... the campaign is abysmally bad. The conditions are absolutely ridiculous to try and nail on each map... You basically have to go for one of the tile conditions and then go for the score condition. Trying to do both tile conditions and the score is near impossible without perfect RNG... of which this game is heavily dependent on for…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have read the terrible reviews of the past few months: I see there have been some issues with the game at launch, however I am pretty sure the devs must have fixed it by now. Over the few enjoyable hours that I've played, I have encountered no bugs nor issues whatsoever. It is a fun game and I can only recommed it, if you're a fan of world-building boardgames and you like the retro-game aesthetic

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I adore Overboss, it's one of my favourite board games. This is a faithful recreation of the game, with a host of thematic animations and music. It looks and sounds great. There are however quite a few issues that mean I have to really work to enjoy it; Internet lobbies are tricky to get working You can't choose which tiles are going to be in an online game The controller controls are abysmal Games will often bug and not work correctly, especially when using Command Cards. You can't switch…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wouldn't recommend it for now : beside the bugs, i think it lacks substance. For example, in the main mode of the game, you're playing alone. No AI adversaries or anything. So it's just a score game, WITHOUT A LADDER. The game itself is somewhat fun, but i can't play online at all. The public matchmaking doesn't seem to work unless you find a code (so have a friend or found somebody willing to play on another platform) or wait ages for somebody else to do so. Too bad, i think 99% of the fun…

negative · AI labelView post →I have gone on to draw King Croak multiple times, including for the Overboss board game cover art and, most recently, for the Turn Order magazine cover that released at GenCon last year.
neutral · AI labelView post →Been a fan of the card games for a while after a mutual friend showed it off for me. We sat here and played 2 hours of games alone and had a blast doing it. The mechanics are very easy to understand, the characters and music are very enjoyable. It's a simple game but very enjoyable if you love classics that have an abundance of passion put towards their projects. Fantastic game, looking forward to playing more with my friends!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Digital version of the board game of the same name. Simple board game with light depth and relaxing fun. Online matchmaking is not working. You can't see your board at the end of the game which is disappointing. Also, there needs to be an undo button for those accidental clicks that select a tile you don't want or put the tile where you don't want it. It is really unbelievable that the game released without this. I'm going to leave a thumbs down for now, but if they fix these issues in less…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I would like to introduce you to King Croak! This roun and chumby fella is the face of a board game called Overboss and has been released on Steam and GOG digitally a while ago. Simple game, runs last 15 minutes or so ( for me ) but this guy can be your in game avatar~ The potential this guy has~
neutral · AI labelView post →I admit bias as a game developer for Brotherwise, but I think this game is awesome. Most of the bugs were fixed, and it does a great job of porting the physical game to the screen. The world feels alive as all the sprites move in beautiful pixel animation, and it truly makes you feel like a boss creating your own overworld to be the Overboss of.

I recently played #Overboss, the #BossMonster spin-off, with a friend and his son and I loved it. It’s a tile placement game wherein you compete to build the best video game overworld. It’s a well-balance family game that’s quick to set up and easy to play. What #boardgames are you excited about?
positive · AI labelView post →Overboss, developed by BlanketGames and Brotherwise Games and published by Goblinz Publishing alongside Maple Whispering Limited, is a digital strategy title that translates the logic of tile-drafting board games into a polished, accessible format. It doesn’t rely on fast reflexes or complex storytelling; instead, it builds its appeal around careful planning, spatial reasoning, and the satisfaction of constructing an efficient, high-scoring map. The experience is deliberately measured, offering…

I love the campaign mode and challenging myself to get all of the objectives on the first try. It is quite addicting! My favorite thing about having this in video game format is that I am able to play with people online. Overall, this is a simple and fun game with even better artwork.

neutral · AI labelView post →The game mechanics are good and the look is pretty but in the state it is now it feels a little incomplete, like there's no option to quit a game in the middle of the campaign you have to shut the game down and hope it saved your progress. The game feels empty, it would have add a lot to the game to have unlockable factions or bosses. When you play a game, even in campaign mode, it gives you nothing more than a score. I know its a port from a boardgame, but i think its a missed opportunity to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I tend to avoid games that don't have good solo modes. It basically needs to operate the same as a multiplayer game. I think the only one I have that's a little disappointing is OverBoss. It's just a high score chase. I'd rather have a simulated opponent, and that goes for most games.
