What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 70 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (137 of 181 positive).
Players praise the game's simple, elegant concept and find it fun and refreshing. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note the game lacks replayability and feels too repetitive after a few runs. [4][5][6] Several players mention the game is easy once you learn the tricks, especially on lower difficulties. [7][8][9]

In the best roguelikes, no two runs feel the same. In this game, no two runs feel different. It's not a lack of content - I've had multiple runs with completely different characters, items, and cards. The issue is that none of this changes how the game plays in any meaningful way. Just scroll through these reviews and look at the playtime - even the people recommending this game aren't finding a reason to play it …

I love memo and I love when somebody takes a game with simple rules and builds something bigger on top of it without destroying the base premise. Pairs & Perils is a perfect example of things I love. It's simple, elegant and quick. Because of that don't expect to create some big combos like in other deck builders. Still there's plenty of room for making synergies and doing builds. On lower difficulties you can just …

The gut feeling I had upon discovering this game was completely right... From the gameplay to the aesthetic and the seemingly dreamlike soundtrack, Pairs & Perils scratches that same itch that all great Roguelike Deckbuilders aim to achieve. I was honestly shocked to see that the game has just over 100 reviews at the time of writing this. While some of the constructive criticism captured in negative reviews point to …

6/10 When I first saw this game, I was very excited about it. The art is right up my alley, the themes are cool, and the concept is new and interesting. The first few runs, I really enjoyed. It's a fun game. The more I played, the more I realized that the matching concept has a fundamental flaw. When you match 3 sets, the game gives you three more; when you play on Normal, it shows these new cards to you and so you …

Fun game, love the art, music, and simplistic style that lets you just focus on the game and forget the daily stress of other stuff going on. Runs are quick enough to be bite size but harder difficulties hard enough to feel rewarding for good play.

60 of 85 · most liked firstTL;DR: I have unlocked a considerable portion of the unlockables in the game during my first run in 30 minutes. The game is nowhere near being endlessly replayable and is rather an early-access product. The Pairs & Perils game page includes a roadmap that says they will do their best to keep their update promises, but players should not make purchasing decisions based on them. The game's current phase wouldn't even be appropriate for an early access game that is marketed as endlessly…

neutral · AI labelView post →attempting to memorize cards is a beta move i just pick a random card and choose the next card according to my gut feeling, that's the alpha way to play the game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Match pairs is a cute concept for the premise of the game. Unfortunately, it's the same concept that causes this game's shortcomings. My memory is literally horrible so I am terrible at matching pairs, but the mechanic design of the game essentially eliminates the need for a good memory. Every time you match 3 pairs you redraw the same 6 cards. If you fail to match a pair, the timer on the enemies drop. When the timer hits 0, they attack. Conceptually, very simple and easy to grasp. In…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pairs & Perils is a roguelite deckbuilder where the player must defeat monsters by matching pairs of cards which are shown face down. Successfully matching a pair will activate the card, but picking two different cards will cause the monsters’ turn counter to reduce. Enemies will attack the player when their counter reaches zero. Combat tactics are fairly simple, because as long as the player keeps successfully matching cards, enemies are effectively stun locked, which means that their…

neutral · AI labelView post →Full playthrough past dungeon master here: https://youtu.be/Oe1C3kVKMfE It's a really enjoyable game it's a bit easy when you figure out the tricks to it and a bit short as well to beat all the difficulties, but for $7.99 I think I got my moneys worth there is a good bit of replayability if you want to get all the achievements as well since there's a decent amount of characters at the moment and the creators seem to be planning to add more. Something for the creators to consider to add…

Things I Like About Pairs & Perils: The Memory Pair-up Game Flip the two same cards, and it will always be your round. A simple card-flipping game which you deal damage or cast spells by flipping and successfully pairing up the cards. If you cannot pick the right cards, enemies' attack cool-down will advance. Every start of the round the game will briefly show you each card before flipping them over. This means that you are completely safe as…

neutral · AI labelView post →Played once, beat once. You can get in a loop, where you make 3 matches, and the game will deal out 6 more cards to replace them, which will contain 3 more matches. From that point, as long as you only click on those 6 cards, you only have to remember 6 things.

neutral · AI labelView post →This game is easier than the children's game it's based on. There is basically no point in this being a roguelike, since you can just ignore the enemies entirely and win every time (maybe there's a specific enemy encounter that messes with this, but that is definitely not enough.) Maybe the higher difficulties above normal fix this problem, but idk. I don't want to have to redownload it to check, and I can't find the info online, yet. For "normal" difficulty, though (which is supposed to be…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unfortunately the game gets extremely repetitive quite quickly and the game relies far too much on this mechanism. The game delivers nothing much beyond it.

neutral · AI labelView post →Soooo... it might be me... but I couldn't find a reason to keep more than 5 cards in a deck. When they get re-dealed, all you have to memorize is 3 matches. it's 2am... I played my 2 games and won them both. The concept is new, but it's not that fun or interesting. It doesn't matter what cards you choose, as long as they match. Keep matching, and insta-win every battle.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm 50/50 with this game. Although it's a fun idea, I ended up beating the game almost completely in 2 and a half hours. There's some pretty basic common sense ways to get unending turns, and the rest was simply going with the higher chance of success. If they add more to the game, or more challenges, I would suggest buying it.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its a very enjoyable and refreshing experience ! Some complaints were made regarding content etc... but the game is not expensive, it's an indie game with planned follow-up and the memory gameplay is fun. I enjoyed the art style and the music :) Give it a shot ! Its also perfect on the Deck.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fun, small, well constructed game. I enjoyed it most once I got to the highest level - on the lower difficulties you are shown the cards while being dealt and are tasked with remembering as many as you can. On the hardest difficulty they are dealt face down, so, technically it is harder but it was more satisfying not having a bunch of information thrown in your face to recall.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →LOVING this!!! I beat the game with the five characters so far and beat it on hard mode—right now I’m getting painfully slaughtered on dungeon master mode 🤭 can’t wait for more content, more cards, more characters, maybe few more achievements

Poker, Black Jack, Remmy and now even Pairs. Yes, Pairs, a game where you reveal cards and try to match them. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was really excited when I discovered the concept of Pairs & Perils — the idea immediately caught my attention! But I have to admit I was a bit disappointed once it was time to play. The gameplay didn’t quite deliver the experience I had imagined. I was expecting a relaxed, thoughtful memory game where not finding pairs right away wouldn’t be a big deal (though obviously, getting them quickly would be a nice bonus). And while the game sort of goes in that direction, I feel like the mechanics…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent game of Runs/Deck Builder and for our memory. Very creative and good soundtracks.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This might be one of the best designed elaborations of an extant simple game I have ever seen in my life. Absolutely incredible, super fun, and tricks me into improving my memory by being an extremely good computer game. Good work, I look forward to your content updates and further games! Absolute banger.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think they did a pretty good job interpreting the concept, but I think the reason it feels so "middling" to everyone is that it has a bit too much of a "matching minigame in a bigger game" feel rather than a set of mechanics that feel substantial enough for repeated gameplay. To be honest, I feel like they should have more carefully considered the mechanics of the matching game aspect of the game independently of the turn-based battling rogue-like. The turn-based battles feel like an attempt…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not a bad idea, just not very fun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Such a chill card game! It’s super easy to pick up, and the art and music make it so cozy. Perfect for when you just want to relax and have a no-stress gaming moment. The progression is really cool too, so it keeps you hooked without feeling overwhelming. neutral · AI labelView post →This game is initially very fun. Seeing the cards briefly before they are flipped allows the player to memorize as much as they can and heavily rewards players that can do this well. To some extent, it might reward the player too much since they are able to complete an encounter without giving the enemy a single turn. To combat this, higher difficulties take away this ability to memorize cards at the beginning of a round. First you don't the see cards when you redraw, then you don't see them at…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A cute, unique little roguelike, but its simplicity causes it to lack much replay value. I've beat the game on normal difficulty multiple times already at just a few hours in, and not once have felt much incentive to try different strategies or optimize my deck in any way. I rarely even look at the enemies' special abilities because they don't affect my strategy at all. I'm three hours in and only see myself playing for one or two more before shelving this one.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pairs & Perils, developed by Little Horror Studios and published by Rogue Duck Interactive together with Gamersky Games, is a cleverly designed roguelike that distinguishes itself by reimagining the familiar dungeon-crawling formula through the lens of memory-based gameplay. Instead of relying on decks of cards, dice rolls, or traditional turn-based systems, the game builds its entire combat and progression loop around matching hidden pairs on a grid. At first glance, this may evoke the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pairs & Perils is a very neat game and cute concept, but requires a LOT of work from where it's currently at. First thing I noticed is how exploitable this game is. You kind of have to force yourself to play fair in order to enjoy it. Using screen recordings, screenshots or even pen and paper could completely trivialise this game. Second is what I'm gonna call "comboing" enemies. After 3 sets of cards have been played, 3 sets get redeployed that you can entirely see. It's VERY easy to…
