Paradise Lost is a great example of a game with good graphics and nothing behind it. I love walking simulators like What Remains of Edith Finch, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Firewatch and others, but this is probably the most dull and superficial I have ever played and hated. There is literally zero gameplay; you move your character from A to B listening to the story, pulling some levers and pushing some …

A very interesting concept and worldbuilding completely ruined by movement mechanics. Honestly, the sloth at the DMV from Zootopia moves faster than the game's protagonist. The absurd decision to give the player such an incredibly slow pace and tedious drag-and-hold mechanics to interact with objects turn what could be a really good interactive narrative into a monotonous chore. I didn't even complete Act 1 and I …

Paradise Lost, from a mechanical standpoint, is your average walking simulator. It is a fairly linear game that neither provides you with a ton of exploration nor stimulating puzzles that require you to rub some brain cells together. Paradise Lost is a really good walking / exploration game. At the beginning it felt a bit boring but then it got better and i wanted to figure out where the story leads me in the end. The gameplay consists of just of walking around, opening doors, pushing a few buttons and reading notes. Nothing stressful or complicated. There is no combat, jumpscares or any other kind of nonsense. It's also not scary, only the …

If you can get past the abysmal walking speed ‘Paradise Lost’ offers a graphically beautiful, atmospheric and detailed world to explore set in an alternate history timeline. The story is a linear slow burn and there are no puzzles or gameplay other than plenty of interactable objects and the occasional (not very) hidden area. Like most ‘Walking Simulators’ the game serves as visuals to narration in unravelling the …

60 of 349 · most liked firstThe atmosphere is good, and I love myself a good walking simulator, but Paradise Lost commits the cardinal sin of the recent artsy walking sim: untoggable headbobbing. I don't know why the walking sim dev crowd so consistently seems to think that the field of view swaying left to right and up and down is increasing immersion, considering the human brain is hardwired to eliminate those motions in the perception of a healthy human. A sizable portion of the potential playerbase (read: customers)…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Every time I play a post apocalyptic game I have a weird feeling that there should be a game which tells the story of an unsung hero. Who is that hero? He/she is that human being who goes into work AFTER the apocalypse, prints out the newspaper about the apocalypse itself and also delivers it to already sealed bunkers. No, this game isn’t about that hero, but this is another game which includes a newspaper lore object with the title “The bombs has fallen”... Paradise Lost takes place in an…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think what irks me about this game is something that will set me apart from most other negative reviews. In the end I am not upset about it being a walking simulator (an extremely slow one at that), but instead I am upset about two things. I will spoil the game, so please duck away here if you aren't interested in being spoiled. The TL:DR is I don't recommend it. Okay so spoilers: In case the developer ever reads this, I hope this doesn't come off as meanspirited. I am sure you guys did a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Premise This review contains no spoilers. Paradise Lost (PL) is a linear narrative adventure set in an alternate timeline during the 1980s. World War II didn't end as we all know: Nazi Germany developed weapons of mass destruction and used them against their enemies, plummeting the world into a desolate nuclear winter. This story is about Szymon, a young Polish boy that sets out into the wastelands for personal reasons, and finds an abandoned Nazi bunker he intends to explore. What he will…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There's so much wasted potential here that I wouldn't even call this a game. I know, melodramatic. Let me explain. When you start, it's amazing! The plot is a deep mystery that you uncover piece by piece, and everything is wonderfully out of place. Where am I? What are those doing underground? All in all, I played for 74 minutes because of that mystery. Sadly, the gameplay is so dull, repetitive, and frustrating that an awesome storyline cannot save it. The walking is probably the worst…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So I see developers just learned lever pulling animation The idea of the game is nothing new, it's another alternative history tale. But the story aspect is done really well and I enjoyed it. I'm obviously not a nazi supporter in any way but I must say they had really cool aesthetics so the symbols and other stuff is used in games to this day, even some fantasy or sci-fi games adopt similar style. And I must say exploring the nazi bunker was fun. The story combines sci-fi and some history…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was looking forward to Paradise Lost as soon as I saw the first trailer. This is a very interesting game taking place in an alternative version of our World War II history. If my understanding is correct the Allies were eliminated and the Germans managed to create nuclear weapons that were eventually used against Europe. And the end result is what you see here: a nuclear wasteland covered by snow on the surface. Our protagonist is a boy called Simon who leaves his home (shelter) where he…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ok so this review is mainly written out of spite since a lot of people have complaints about this game that don't matter and just seem utterly inept to me. Boring gameplay? Slow walking speed? Buddy were you ever at a museum? The whole point of the game and the entire delivery mechanism is to be and walk through a space. The worst complaint has to be that the ending is predictable? No ♥♥♥♥ my friend! A game about grief and loss where you can see oblivion coming before you reach it? Almost like…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A little eerie game that you can complete in an afternoon. No danger, just a walk in memories and in the details of the story. It's pretty nice, but a little buggy. Some advice because i like you: - Don't try to get all the achievements. Just enjoy the story and whatever you choose, let it be as the definitive way, your way. Trying to get all the achievements is tedious and kinda boring - Before starting playing, please disable "Head bob" in the settings. You'll thank me later, I promise.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Over 8 hours into the story… only walked about 100 feet. It’s basically Fallout, but the protagonist comes from the outside into the vault. The aesthetic of the game reminded me of the Metro Series games minus the action. It seems the devs wanted it to be an experience rather than just another action game. Paradise Lost has an intriguing premise, but this is one of those games you watch a stream or let’s play, and if you really want to experience it, wait for a deep, deep sale years later.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When I first heard about this game from Alpha Beta Gamer in June of 2020; The graphics and the plot hook were quite salivating. A secret Nazi bunker in a world where WWII never ended? Sounded ripe, even if the Demo he showed wasn't much other than a fancy train station, it was a game I popped into my radar while Covid was still going on. THEN, two months later in August during the "summer of gaming" thing or whatever it was called, a "Cinematic Trailer" showed off what happened during the final…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unfortunately, I bought this one on Humble Bundle and can't return it. I really wish I could. While it looks like it could be an interesting story, the movement is absolutely horrible. I get motion sickness with some games and this one DEFINITELY will trigger it. There is no head bob toggle or FOV slider or motion blur toggle. Sadly, it ruins what could be a really interesting game.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Have you ever wondered where the next BioShock game could take place? Paradise Lost won’t give you an answer to that, but it creates a vision so magnificent that I wish 2K Games used it for another installment of this cherished series… If captivating story and fascinating world are the most important things you seek in a video game, then Paradise Lost is a must-have for you (the same applies if you simply like walking sims). Otherwise… well, I encourage you to give this title a try,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are mostly 3 aspects you should consider when deciding if this is a good game for you to try: 1) It isn't a mechanically engaging experience. The experience is an extremely straightforward, linear one, without any Combat, QTEs or Puzzles. 2) It is definitely a slower paced game. 3) Getting the full experience does involve a decent but not overwhelming amount of text/reading. If you're not averse to those 3 aspects defining the game, you will likely enjoy. If any (or especially all)…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Walking simulator. Some minor bugs. You can't run. Somewhat boring but can be played till the end cause it has just a few hours. If you reload from a checkpoint and stuck walking in place, just Esc → Setting → Accept without changing anything, then back out to Continue the game. You should be able to move.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Paradise Lost is... frustrating. It has a number of compelling ideas, and its art direction is impeccable. However, a combination of frustratingly rote and slow gameplay, wooden storytelling, and mechanical bugs ultimately leave it disappointing. It's a little tricky to pin down the source of my disappointment, but much of it stems from the way the game realizes its setting, I think. Set in an alternate history where the second World War didn't end in 1945, the N*zi party began developing…

neutral · AI labelView post →Decent walking simulator. I mostly quite enjoyed it but I can also see why a lot of people gave a negative review for it. The bad -pretty slow walking speed, also having to climb up obstacles often where the animation is quite slow. This can get annoying very quickly. -there is a bug that seems to occur every time after loading a save where you can't move at all. Luckily there is a guide explaining you the simple fix for it: just open the settings, press "confirm", and now you are able to walk…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't write a lot of reviews on Steam, but I felt this game deserved it. This is a really well done post-apocalyptic "walking simulator". The setting gave me some serious "what if Bioshock, but Nazis" vibes, of course without the shooty bits. Some of the German is a bit hit-and-miss, but it didn't really disturb the setting. What I really loved about this game is how visually stunning it is at times. The setting (minor spoilers of the beginning coming up) is that the Americans remained…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A quiet bunker crawl where the monsters are gone and only the emptiness and remnants of war remain. Nothing ever jumps out, yet every corridor feels heavy, as if the ideology that started the war is what's really haunting the place. This isn't about looting, but about walking through a museum of dead beliefs, with each room holding a different kind of tragedy. It feels less like racing toward an ending and more like slowly wandering through the lingering echo of a world that has already ended.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really enjoyed Paradise Lost. It is a very linear walking simulator that starts you in darkness and leads you through a vast and beautifully crafted landscape. It also tells a sweet story of the human condition... betrayal and redemption. You play from the first person perspective of Szymon, a young man who has entered an abandoned Nazi bunker in search of answers. His mother has recently died and left him with a photo as a starting point. Along the way, he encounters Ewa - a woman who is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Paradise Lost presents an alternate version of history but does not pack itself with enough narrative to remain interesting. Exploring a Nazi bunker is intriguing at first, when the story is not trying so hard to evade answers by excluding vital information. But when the story stretches itself thin, players have to wait until the lacklustre end for it to make sense. It is a shame, too, because the environments are designed well enough that they could have been part of a better game. Paradise…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Paradise Lost is one of those games that feels more like art than a traditional game. If you enjoyed Dear Esther or Gone Home, this fits the definition of a walking sim. If you're into reading up on the lore behind Fallout Vaults and their eerie backstories, then you'll love this game because it's like exploring one big Fallout vault with a dark story that keeps unraveling. I was enraptured from the start. I didn't look at the store page, I just saw this in my library under 'exploration' and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Paradise Lost is a walking simulator with an interesting story and a haunting atmosphere. In this alternative reality, the World War II did not end as we know, and the world was punished by nuclear missiles. The story takes place in an underground world. Despite that engaging premise and its good graphics (and voice acting) the game has several problems. Firstly, the movement is ridiculously slow (it's not necessary to run like Bolt, but it needed to be this slow?). On the other hand, the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can't recommend it. This game has a serious bug: you can't move after loading a save game. You need to find a workaround and turn head bobbing off to avoid this situation. There was another bug too which did not let me through a part of the story. Luckily I found a solution for that one as well: I needed to reinstall the game. Those tell me one thing: the developer doesn't really cared about this game and that's the reason why you should avoid it. Walking speed is slow as hell, and you need…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's impossible to play! The game looks nice and seems well done but THE WALKING SPEED is much too SLOW ! It's not even enough speed for a usual walking simulator, this moving speed is tedious and makes you feel inside a nightmare. I will put the game to the side until they release some patch to add a sprint function or change the default speed. It does not make sense, makes exploration completely demotivating. p.s. I love walking simulators and this is the first time in my life I find the…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The atmosphere and world design is some of the best I've experienced since Bioshock. I got lost in the detail and story telling through the world design, but know this is a walking simulator that isn't great at walking. The player moves quite slowly without a way to speed it up, this feels sluggish and kills the gameplay for me. Ladders take years to go up and down and some "cutscenes" keep your character locked looking at a wall or speaker while you sit through awkward dialog. But all these…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Paradise Lost is a game that was crafted with a strong message in it's core. The polish team from PolyA weave a landscape that shifts from the cold despair from Nuclear winter to the budding lush of an underground forest. I strongly suggest buying the game if you are on the lookout for a narrative experience that goes hand in hand with beautiful graphics. 9/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Please, any person/group that intends to make a game: do not let bugs be the main component of your gameplay. I really wanted to like this, but having entire areas not load and falling through the map are not what I was expecting when I got the game. update: capping the game at 30fps seems to fix most of the maps not loading problems, but I will still keep my review as negative for this shouldn't have been a problem in the first place. update 2: going for 100%ing, I relaise that is not…

If you are interested in the game and it's before March 1st, 2022, consider picking up the game as part of the current monthly bundle. A slow walk through remnants of the Nazis. Paradise Lost takes place in an alternate history where Germany did a lot better in World War II. It’s also a walking simulator of the worst kind. It is a game that takes the walking part of the genre title way too literally and lets the player move at…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Slow walking sim w/ a multi-layered story. Pros: * Ambiance is great. * Plot's multi-layered and well-paced. * Decent voice-acting. * One of the few games where you can see your own character model. Cons: * When game ends, it wipes the savegame, forcing you to play thru again to get different endings. * A handful of timed challenges that seem out of place to me. (choices while using a console, in dialog, and one while going down a butcher chute) * The "run" button just makes you walk a…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I would like to have finished the game. But there are too many bugs that make the game unplayable, like you getting stuck, interactions not working. And the extremely slow walking speed makes exploration very tiring. Too bad, because the game looks nice and seemed fun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The graphic environment looks really good and the game has a good story, but the game feels sluggish at best and the character's speed of walking is very slow, you can't make this faster. Turn head bob in the settings off (with head bob on you are stuck when reloading from a checkpoint), this should never be enabled and certainly not by default.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to like this but after playing through one ending, it's really not that great after all. While the story is predictable, filled with tropes and is fine, it's a shame that the universe and the world they have in the game is wasted on this particular story. English voice acting is over expressive with grunts while being tone deaf in lines. Writing hasn't been checked by a native English speaker, has the odd quips that non-native speakers think native speakers say, or think are…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →3/5 Paradise Lost is a very, very pretty game. It's atmospheric, the level design is excellent, the sound is engrossing. So why's it only a 3/5? Well, it's slow. You will walk in a long, linear path, at a speed below usual walking pace. For the first few minutes it felt like a horror game, but opens up into an exploration / mystery game. This can be OK, but unfortunately the lack of any puzzles / challenge essentially makes this a "hold W and click occasionally" game, not quite enough for me.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You play as an arthritic 12 year old polish boy Szymon who slowly shuffles through an interesting background reading notes and occasionally listening to audio tapes of a more interesting story than the one he's in. if they didn't artificially lengthen the game by adding 20 second long animations to every action Szymon does or had him walk at a normal pace, this would be a 2 hour game at best.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A beautiful and unique game! Yes, the walk speed is slow, and the sprint function doesn't actually seem to.. Function. Yes, there is a bug that locks you in place after loading a saved game, which requires you to turn off the head bobbing effect in settings. However, I don't think those two issues are enough to justify the negative reviews. If you enjoy atmospheric walking simulators - definitely give this one a go!

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Most reviews complain about the walking pace, but the worst sin of this game, and the reason for this negative review, is that the general pacing of the game is all over the place, and the story is not well tied together either. The walking is just the nail in the coffin. Look, this game is a walking simulator which main gameplay focus is collecting documents and reaching the next dialog segment. If you like that, it's not that bad of a game, but be aware that the story progression is badly…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First off all, the game is as buggy as can be. If you reload a checkpoint, you are stuck in the ground and cannot move without changing the game to window mode/ fullscreen. I generally got stuck very often on random stuff and had to reload a checkpoint. Some of the animations are also fecked. If you lower quality, you game will be dark af for some reason. It's very linear and besides the basic mechanics, it doesn't contain dynamics that engage the player so don't expect complex puzzles. The gameplay is not the strongest. It contains some design problems that can affect the experience a bit, such as the UI/UX for dialogue selection or that the interaction with buttons is not intuitive. Although I experienced…
