Developer Owlcat Games

Pathfinder: Kingmaker is a 2018 isometric role-playing game, developed by Owlcat Games, and published by Deep Silver, originally for Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux. Based on Paizo Publishing's Pathfinder franchise, the game sees players assume the role of a hero who becomes the ruler of their own kingdom, whereupon they deal with several problems that endanger their rule from neighbouring lands, various… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Players praise the deep story and memorable companions, but warn the game is extremely long and punishing. [1][2][3] Many find the kingdom management tedious and the difficulty spikes frustrating, especially in the endgame. [4][5][6] Some reviewers note the game requires extensive research and patience, with bugs and time limits harming the experience. [7][8][9]

400+ hours into the game - shame that there is only positive or negative options, but, all in all, i believe that negatives mayorly overshadow positives. The good: 1) Story. One of the most wonderful worlds and stories that I have had pleasure to explore in games. Companions. Main quest. Side quests. Aligment choices. It is all absolutely wonderful. The plot twists, belivable betrayals, unheard of aliances. It …

The infamous House at the Edge of Time. Left me with no choice but to quit the game. I will not return to it. A game that does not respect player time and choices for party build doesn't deserve my respect. Its a textbook example of punishing the player for the game's own design: The Roster Split: After 124 hours of carefully tweaking a hyper-optimized main party, the game suddenly separates everyone. This is a game that was made to target a very specific audience, cast adrift in a genre that has mostly devolved into Mass Effect clones that lack mechanical depth, and it absolutely succeeds at the cost of its broader appeal. If you are thinking about getting this game and just getting into the genre, it is probably because you played Baldur's Gate 3. That game is fantastic in its own right - certainly not a mass …

Multiple playthroughs. I have ruled this kingdom more times than I can emotionally justify. I came here expecting “fantasy RPG.” I left as: a political leader a therapist for emotionally unstable companions a crisis manager and occasionally… a menace to society depending on my alignment 10/10 experience. 📖 Story: oh we’re doing THIS today??? You like: assassination attempts mystery political drama making decisions …

Pathfinder: Kingmaker is a deeply flawed game, especially when it comes to kingdom management. In that sense, it is almost impressively faithful to the tabletop material, where attempts at making kingdom management fun have not exactly been universally loved either. And yet, every few years, I return to the Stolen Lands. The reason is the writing. The companions, villains, side characters, and their stories are …

Pathfinder: Kingmaker — Enhanced Plus Edition sits at 68% positive across 283 opinionated reactions from 4 sources. Fresh or rotten — where do you land?

Critics, per Wikipedia

Pathfinder: Kingmaker received mixed reviews, holding an aggregate score of 73 out of 100 on Metacritic. The Game Debate review praised the game's engrossing story, depth and realm management feature, calling it "a beautiful looking, rich CRPG, that delivers a great place to adventure, an interesting land to rule and the tools to carve out a realm that you can call home". In a somewhat less enthusiastic review, GameSpot's Daniel Starkey believes the game to be "hampered by a litany of small issues, balancing, and the gargantuan knowledge base you'll need to play most effectively", while also lauding the narrative and the kingdom management aspect of the game, mentioning that "for those with…

Baldurs Gate 1 is a fantastic adventure. I just finished Baldurs Gate 1 for the first time and really enjoyed it. That's why I want to share my thoughts on. I'm acutally kina fond of the genre and love games like Pillars, KOTOR, Tyranny and already tried BG1 a couple of years ago, but I gave up after some hours (more on that later). In the meantime I finished BG3 twice, played through Owlcat's Pathfinder games and now I wanted to give BG1 another go. Story: I kinda like it, but it's definitely…

As an avid TTRPG nerd, I already held a strong appreciation for the oft-abused role of GM (particularly since I'm normally the one inhabiting it). Playing this game, I was repeatedly reminded why it is so very, very important for a tabletop game to have a referee capable of adjusting encounters to the characters' capabilities, and ideally make his rolls behind a screen to keep RNGesus on a leash. To the game's credit, this is probably the closest I've ever come to just playing a game of…

A few years back i remember dropping this game, but not the reason why. Once I started replaying it, it all became clear. Pathfinder Kingmaker is one of the most Anti-Fun games I've ever played. At every turn, at every corner, the game is fighting your desire to have fun, almost as if it enjoys harassing you. Kingmaker has a Horseshoe difficulty. The start of the game is extremely unforgiving and doesn't seem very interested in letting you explore. Most likely one of your very first side…

I love Owlcat, and this game. Unfortunately, the game was rushed out due to the devs loosing rights to the game, meaning it has an insurmountable number of bugs. Frequently, quests stop progressing, enemies get stuck, and all sorts of other problems. Thousands of people encounter game breaking bugs that have no solution. Even modding the game to cheat doesn't always fix it. Its just unfortunate. The story is great, and the game had the chance to be so much better. The devs aren't even allowed…

I have a hard time writing this review because I put 100 hours into this game and mostly enoyed it. Pro: Slow paced, can be stopped/paused at any time. Interesting world design. Lot of development options for the characters. Con: Needs frequent googling on how to avoid game breaking bugs (like Kingdom management on Deck). Sometimes you don’t know what to do until you google that you just have to wait/fast-forward. Areas have unexpected change in difficulty. However, you‘d need to keep a…

This is every Owlcat game in a nutshell (number of acts may differ but the structure is the same): Prologue – Introductory conversation with NPC: PC is established as well as the place of action. Then The Plot Twist happens which sets everything on its head. Very action packed, intensive and engaging sequence when you can feel what’s at stake and get immersed into the world. First part – a small piece of open world, free to roam and explore. All or almost all of the mechanics present.…

Pathfinder: Kingmaker is a very engaging, but at the same time extremely exhausting game. The clearly good parts are the writing and the soundtrack. Everything else is at best questionable, and at worst terrible. The main reason most players should try this game is its story. The text is written quite well and is interesting to read. I wanted to know how the story would end, to complete companion quests, and to solve small problems of my kingdom. The game itself is fairly linear, but it has…

Of all the Owlcat games, this is the hardest to get through. It was and still is incredibly ambitious and borderline demented, but this ambition comes with drawbacks, many of which they only started to remedy in their more recent titles (WotR and Rogue Trader). It is incredibly long, to the point where the endgame is more of a marathon than a glorious climax. This marathon sadly extends to the gameplay as endless waves of trash fights, for which you still have to sort of min-max and buff up…

It is undercooked. Exploration is not satisfying. You basically find a cave or similar on like 90% of them. No interesting sidequests and choices don't really make too much difference. Weirdly, the two Pathfinder games (this and wotr) have a similar premise, as a female bad guy can get absolution in the end. Kingdom management is a drag, and you feel you are constantly out of time. The difficulty is weird. Before the House at the Edge of Time, I can just pummel through everything. There, I have…

Being forced to complete companion quests that are contrary to the character that I was trying to play in order to prevent the ending from being terrible was extremely restricting to my choices. I hate it when a game forces you to make decisions simply because of the developers thoughts on how you're "supposed" to play the game instead of allowing players the option to play the way they want to.
