What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 192 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (844 of 951 positive).
Players praise the remaster for combining the best parts of the Saturn and PS1 versions. [1][2][3] Many note the Metroidvania-style progression and level design as a standout feature. [4][5][6] Some criticize the difficulty, confusing maps, and lack of modern conveniences like quick saves. [7][8][9]

Never played the original and picked this up hoping for a first-person metroidvania experience. Firstly, regarding the port, it runs perfectly at 4k@120, feels smooth to play and looks good. One complaint is that they didn't add subtitles to the FMV or dialogue. I get that games of this era often didn't have subtitles, but this is exactly the kind of thing I'd expect to be fixed in a remaster. As for the game …

Powerslave Exhumed. It's my favourite game in four areas: My favourite game ever made. My favourite game on the Sega Saturn. My favourite game on a Sega console. My Favourite shooter from the mid-90's. This remaster, Powerslave Exhumed, is the best of both worlds because it has the best parts of my beloved Sega Saturn version with the best parts of the PS1 port in the mix. This is basically a hybrid of the Saturn …

You’re a special forces badass dropped into Karnak, Egypt, to deal with aliens, undead horrors, and probably some ancient curse you definitely didn’t read the fine print on. It’s pulpy, it’s loud, and it leans all the way into its “sci-fi Tomb Raider but you have a flamethrower” energy. Gameplay: This isn’t your typical ‘90s corridor shooter. There’s actual level progression, power-ups that unlock new areas (hello, …

Compared to other classic shooters made around the same time, Powerslave is quite unique. It's ancient Egyptian setting and Metroidvania-esque level design & progression stand out a lot, and though I personally found the combat somewhat lacking, the weapon selection itself is super cool. This is a hidden gem from the PlayStation and Sega Saturn libraries, and this remaster is by far the best way to play it now. The …

Powerslave (Always, Exhumed to me). This is, the definitive version. I think I first came across this project on an obscure website a long time ago and quietly hoped it would come to fruition. I have thoroughly enjoyed this game and nostalgic reliving of, one of my favourite Sega Saturn titles. I still have a Sega Saturn with Exhumed and, I 100% approve of this version. I sincerely thank the Team behind this. Thank …

84% of the 192 Steam reviewers we collected recommend PowerSlave Exhumed. The complaint that keeps coming up: very difficult with confusing map design. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

60 of 233 · most liked firstI think one of the best cases for a remastering treatment is something a bit more literal, where different ports/conversions of an old game have pretty clean cut pros & cons that can be compiled into one thing like Nightdive did for Powerslave Exhumed. Many such possible cases.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The new modern FPS games are so detailed, hyper realistic and very cinematic. But I still occasionally comes back to the retro ones. Back to the pioneers of FPS games. Lots of them. Including this one. I love the simplistic gameplay, pixels galores, Intuitive plot. Yes I love them all. But mostly? The (bleep!) soundtracks! This one delivers excellence. So new and modern ones may come and will always does. But nothing can beat the classics and they (modern games) won't ever be made nor exist,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So i cant really blame anyone but myself for this experience so far but I am too far into the game at this point to want to restart. Aesthetically its cool, always like an egyptian theme, guns can feel pretty good, has metroidvania like aspects. However the ammo and health system is dreadful, drops for health or ammo are really low so your struggling to feel powerful, enemies hit like a mac truck and can kill you in a second, the checkpoint system is not great and what i wouldnt give for a…

positive · AI labelView post →In theory it's a super fun game — FPS with strong Metroidvania elements. In reality it's an old game that aged poorly. It's difficult and you'll die a lot. But not because you need to git gud, but because your hitbox is obnoxiously large and the game puts you into many scenarios where it's almost impossible to dodge. And then you have jumps with difficult timings and other frustrating platforming elements, lack of clear direction and levels filled with "here you have to blow this wall, it's…

Feeling the thrill as I wandered through those ancient Egyptian halls, fighting off monsters, always on the edge of discovering what lurked next. Now with a more polished version of the game I can say it delivers much of what drew me in back then, with more polish and depth. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRTzuwkNG_o&list=PLGsOL4SfL-mPE1jEpa5BD5_pRbezTRIp3 In PowerSlave Exhumed you take on…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After a while of playing I stopped and said "Am I having fun" and the answer was no. The small annoyances piled up.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's really mid. Too many fireball and lava evasion setpieces, too few enemy types. Instead of challenging, the game grows just annoying. Special regards to the homing snake staff, where the snakes keep targeting walls instead of enemies directly in front of them. Build Powerslave was better.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First, no quick saves. At all. Second, you CANNOT continue from a checkpoint if you decide to take a break, exit the game and get to it later. That's a BIG no from me, so I'm not going to play any further. An on top of all that, NO SUBTITLES. I understand that it is a remake of an old game, but some minimal effort would be nice.

positive · AI labelView post →Cool shooter with interesting mechanics and maps.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beyond the initial nostalgia of it being a PSX game and a few first decent levels, around Amun Mines level the game starts to drag on. Some pros, some cons. Pros: - Egyptian atmoshpere, it's good - music is decent - first few hours can be charming - level design is mostly good... Cons: - until it's not and some levels start to resemble convoluted labyrinths with way too many corridors and backtracking - weapons - M60 becomes a staple weapon for most of the game, bombs are utility mostly,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I gave up somewhere around the lava monsters, and I stuck around till then mostly thanks to the sunk cost fallacy. This game is interesting and unique in places, but it feels like they were trying to be as tedious and annoying as possible. The list of "why did they design it that way?" is quite long and ridiculous. Why did I need to revisit the exact same levels multiple times? Why is my hitbox this idiotically wide in a game where I'm expected to dodge projectiles in tight spaces? What’s up…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like Boomer Shooters I like Metroidvanias But I dont like having to return back to previous stages and recomplete them as if I never completed them, all over again to make a little progress because I have a new ability to move further in it. Imagine if in the original Doom, everytime you beat a couple maps, you'd have to go back to one of the previous 3 maps and start it all over again as if you never completed it, all enemies and items respawned and doors reclosed because you now have…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a new player, I feel the remastered version is made for returning players than newcomers. The trailer and store page screenshots look exciting, but the actual gameplay suffers from poor level design. Unless you’re familiar with the original game, it’s natural to get stuck. The jump length is set longer than in most FPS, but it’s not intuitive. In a level I scoured every corner, unsure how to reach a higher platform, only to realize I just need to do a long jump. But the platform’s design…

This is the "PowerSlave Exhumed", formerly known as "PowerSlave" or "Exhumed" in Europe region, Whole series was made in years 1996-97 by Lobotomy Software, studio known later for unique Sega Saturn ports of Quake and Duke Nukem 3D, both made on developed by themselves SlaveDriver engine. Due to the difficulties of creating ports studio actually code three different games for PC, Playstation 1 and Sega Saturn. What you looking at…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A good entertaining oldschool shooter but holy hell getting 100% or the good ending without a guide is impossible those secrets are not humanly possible to be found on your own
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nightdive has done something really special here, and it's something I wish we'd see more often with ports and remasters. They have taken a fragmented game that in it's true form was stranded on consoles for the longest time, and pieced together the best parts of each and made the absolute definitive version of it here. No more Build Engine "port" that is actually just a completely different game, now you can play the real version of it on PC. And the game itself is fantastic too, feeling like…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As usual, Nightdive Studios did a great job with the Remake. I just don't think PowerSlave is a very good game.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't even leave reviews. As a fan of classic shooters, I picked this up on a whim, and after completing it, I'd place it just below Doom on a tierlist. Yes, above Duke, Quake, Wolf, Blood, Hexen, Marathon, Turok, Goldeneye.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Horribly aged game... The port/remaster itself is fine, nothing wrong by NightDive. But oh boy, the core design of this game is so damn a** backwards. Where do I even begin? The player hitbox is atrocious, way too big to be playable. 90% of damage you take will be you thinking you dodge an enemy's projectile, only to realize it still hit you, because you have a stupidly big hitbox. It's constant tedium to deal with, especially in the tighter corridor areas, making it almost impossible to dodge…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →and july in the nick of time, Powerslave Exhumed! Really surprised how much I liked this? I do not 'do' FPS games usually, but adding a Metroid-esque aspect did a lot for me? It made traversal genuinely interesting and it being a PS1/Saturn game originally did a lot to make the gunplay lenient
positive · AI labelView post →One of my personal all time favorites. Bit of a hidden gem as far as im aware. Far less popular than it would deserve. Basically a good old honest shooter like doom, duke, heretic, hexen, quake, wolfenstein, and co. Except the keys arnt blue/green/red. But the content recycling is definately good old timey. Fight your way thru a map, solve riddles, kill monsters etc. And once you can swim, jump higher, dive longer, fly, blow up walls etc. you can return each time to find more and more new areas…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Recommended but it's a so-so. It's an adequate Steam Deck experience if you can overlook dated level design which seems to be centered around instadeaths and replaying parts of the levels with additional gear. I generaly love FPS' from that era but this one is not that great, just ok.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really enjoyed PARTS of this game. I feel like it starts out really strong, but drops off a cliff towards the end. The Kilmaat section of the game ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ SUCKS. It's just mass amounts of enemies that have a lot of health and do so much damage. They were really the only thing that made me struggle with Pharaoh difficulty. Kinda dumb the game doesn't give you the "Beat the game on Hard" with beating it on Pharaoh. Not gonna get all the achievements on this game as the dolls are gonna be rough…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The terrible ammo system and tiny amount of enemy/weapon variety make playing this game feel like a chore. The way the levels are laid out also discourages exploration (no secrets, nothing big to find), and you have to repeatedly play through them fully despite them being completely linear. I have much more respect for the original Shadow Warrior after playing this ugly, clunky game. It is surely the worst Build Engine game you've never heard of, with its floaty jumping, lame weapon selection,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I recently finished Dragon Age Inquisition, and then started Powerslave: Exhumed. I never played any of the original versions so it’s a completely new experience for me. Enjoyable so far - it’s an interesting historical link between classic metroidvania and 90s FPS, like a proto-Metroid Prime in some ways. I do wish they’d added a quick save button to this modern version, though.
positive · AI labelView post →FPS platforming while dodging constantly shooting slow projectile traps in awful, bland, samey levels with sh♥t music, underwhelming weapons and lots of tiny enemies. Miss me with that. F♥ck you devs for that last sequence in Amun Mines, putting an enemy after a frustrating platforming & dodging sequence right behind a door where I have to blow myself up to get past the door and then switch to another weapon before said enemy tears me to shreds. I had to do that sh♥t like 20 times. F♥ck you.

positive · AI labelView post →Great game! Played it way back when, and Nightdive has done the game justice. A classic Boomer Shooter every fan of the genre must play.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Flawed gem. Love the Metroidvania spin and some of the level design and map layouts are really intuitive and fun for the time, great arsenal of weapons too that all serve a purpose. That being said enemy variety and design are this games sore spot. Very heavy over reliance, particularly in the middle of the game on enemies with really really harsh homing projectiles at least on Pharoh difficulty. Compounded with a player hitbox that is for no reason extremely large and dodging these projectiles…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Another fantastic Nightdive release and appreciation for a game unappreciated in its time. Powerslave is an FPS with Metroidvania gameplay (a year before SoTN, no less) and it plays out almost flawlessly. This is really a chimaera of the Saturn, Playstation 1, and a little bit of the MS-DOS Build release. The loop is like any Metroidvania: Kill things, find upgrades, finish levels, find more upgrade, return to levels, find things you couldn't access before. The levels aren't massive,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loved this game.I am really surprised about the lack of Metroid Primes on PC. This is no clone as it came out long before Metroid Prime. Exploration and movement is superb, better than Doom Eternal (why is more a Devil May Cry FPS). You have lots of powers in this game and in the end can move almost anywhere. The Egyptian feel is unique. Played to completion and big pity there is no Mod Level Edit scene. Play this game if you like Metroid Prime with a fast arcade feel. Running around is great
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Stopped before finishing. Plays pretty well for an older game and was mostly enjoying it. It plays a bit like Hexen and Hedon Bloodrite but with a level select screen. You backtrack to previous levels as you find new upgrades. This sort of level-based metroidvania is sometimes referred to as a crest-like (which comes from the game Demon's Crest). Backtracking is kind of annoying after getting a new power if you don't just use a guide to tell you which level to revisit because you're…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun retro shooter with good level design, cool weapons, and an interesting progression system (you can return to previous levels at will and use new abilities to reach previously inaccessible areas and unlock new levels). My favorite aspects of the game were probably the exploration and the movement abilities you gain through artifacts. My only real complaint is that your character's hitbox is waaay too wide, which sometimes makes it impossible to dodge projectiles in narrow corridors.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love the setting, cutscenes, designs and presentation. But it really isn't fun to revisit and recomplete the same levels over and over again just with 1 small change in order to progress such as a section being closed off since you need a longer air supply or a high jump so you need to complete different levels until you find that item, return to the level that needs you to use the item to pass it then eventually you'll hit another road block and need to repeat the same steps mentioned above…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loved the game back on the Sega Saturn when it first came out managing to get all dolls and completion. When I saw this on sale I had to snap it up. Its as good as I remember
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it was never a great game it was 1996 okay on saturn cause saturn has no better games but even as a psx release it wasnt that great. besides its clear visuals of the time it adds nothing where i would say YES this game has to be played.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've heard this described as "Metroid Prime before Metroid Prime" several times which had me interested. I think that's overselling it quite a bit, but you can definitely see the Metroid influences. Lots of "get an upgrade, go to the place where it would be useful" going on here. Not so much "super strong atmosphere and impressive storytelling," but it doesn't really need that. It's an interesting take on the classic shooter formula and I can recommend it for sure. FYI, there is a checkpoint…
