Players say Puyo Puyo Champions is a stripped-down game focused on online competitive play, lacking a story mode. [1][2][3] Many note the online community is small or dead, especially on PC, making matches hard to find. [4][5][6] Fans of the series recommend it for hardcore players, but caution casuals may prefer Puyo Puyo Tetris. [7][8][9]

i love puyo puyo, but the casual online community in this game is nonexistent, and theres no singleplayer endless mode, so what am i really meant to do here? :')

puyo champions is a game made for tournament and online play. no story, no endless, no tetris. either play online or play with an ai. not saying this is a bad thing! i love puyo puyo, but if you want more single player elements get tetris 2.

Definitely the best official way to play Puyo Puyo Online on PC, however its cheap price tag is also indicative of the amount of content in this game. All you can really do in this game is play the 2 main Puyo modes; Tsu and Fever. That's all there is to this game. Where Champions shines above Puyo Puyo Tetris 1 and 2 is the online. Puzzle League is somewhat active allowing you to just play Puyo (no Tetris) with …

As a Puyo Puyo fan, this game is nice for bringing back more characters than Puyo Puyo Tetris (also, it has no Tetris players so you don't have to worry about wanting to play against other Puyo players and being smashed on the head with Tetris pieces). But it has no story mode, since it was made for online only (Hence the name it got in the east "Puyo Puyo eSports"), and after Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 got released, the …

If you're a die-hard puyo player, this is definitely for you. I got all fuzzy inside when I saw a few nods towards some of the older characters of the franchise, though it's still disheartening that you can't play as any of them. Personally, I'm still upset there's no storymode, since I'm just a casual, but I still enjoyed it for what it is.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →* **Them's Fightin' Herds** went through a very tragic downfall. Publisher fired the entire development team at the end of 2023, before the final DLC character was even finished, and then released her in a completely broken state. Much later they would eventually put out a hotfix patch with several pages of nerfs, and this character is *still* banned competitively. They did promise further fixes, but they promised that a long time ago and it's been radio silence since. All other promised…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't be tempted by the cheap sale price, Get Puyo Puyo vs Tetris 2 instead it is many times better. The AI in this game is just insane even on easy and not fun to play against. PPVT2 has way better balanced AI and is a much bigger improvement on this game. PPC doesn't even have a story mode, PPVT1 and 2 do have them and those things add alot to a game like this. Can't recommend.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't bother, it's a game designed to be played online but with no-one online to play against. Even when it was new it didn't stay active for long, because it was never given the attention required for PVP games to flourish.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →That's a lot of ranting. I get it. PuyoPuyo main story is necessary for casuals to get introduced to the game. Chaining 10+ long while harassing is a skill that took me a literal decade to reach, and there are far stronger players than me at the game. But PuyoPuyo Tetris was that big casual story driven game that truly did bring a lot of players into the scene. Myself included. So yeah, I wouldn't be a serious PuyoPuyo without that. PuyoPuyo Champions/eSports is pretty good for competitive…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Probably not. This was built for eSports anyways and largely fell flat on that bet, mostly because of how it was handled by SEGA. Due to this, it was largely left abandoned as a side game for a spinoff franchise (Puyo Puyo) to a mostly forgotten original series (Madou Monogatari). Even when it was new, I wasn't getting bites years ago for random matches and I'm sure it's not much better half a decade or more later. I'll defend the Puyo franchise to my dying breath while certainly not being…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At its core the game is really fun. If you want to play Puyo Puyo and get good at it, there is survival mode, tutorials and versus, including online. Being able to change between regular rules and fever mode is also sweet. There are also a lot of skins and settings to mess around with to keep the experience fresh. It is however somewhat lacking in some areas. The quality of online play could be better and there is a lot of stuttering when the latency is high. On top of that there is not any…

negative · AI labelView post →You know what? SEGA has the *gall* to work with LRG to make a physical copy of Puyo Puyo Champions, but won't blink when fans ask them to fix fundamental flaws and failures with the game. So far very impressed by it. Also nice that I can actually use handheld mode again with working JoyCons,…
neutral · AI labelView post →Bought this while it was on sale. Puyo Puyo eSports, a.k.a. Puyo Puyo Champions is an asset flip of the mobile game Puyo Puyo Quest. At its core, it's got the gameplay of Puyo Puyo 2 (a.k.a. "Tsu") and Fever mode. Most importantly, there's no Tetris in it. Can I recommend this game? To hardcore players, absolutely. But the game is severely lacking in content, compared to the Anniversary games that are packed with content. There isn't even an Arcade Ladder! The Switch version may be the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Eight years ago Puyo Puyo Tetris got localized. The crossover is a massive step down from past main series games, but it was the first game to get localized since Fever in 2004. I hated it as a game, but I thought that it would be a good sign for the future because its record sales would surely mean the next mainline game would get localized too. We never got an actual mainline game. But we've been teased over and over instead. The next year we got Puyo Puyo Champions, a budget versus mode…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is named Puyo Puyo eSports in the Eastern market. It's a purely multiplayer game. Netplay includes automated matchmaking and lobbies for the Tsu and Fever game modes. There's still some single player modes available if you need to practice alone though. I haven't played any version of this game other than the PC version. The automated matchmaking and ingame lobbies both seem to work fairly well. They function properly, and the playerbase on PC is big enough to actually find games. Or…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love Puyo Puyo. I hate Puyo Puyo Tetris. It's a big step back from previous games, and it's the worst online experience I've ever dealt with in my life. And I honestly think it gives beginners a bad first impression of the series, because by juxtaposing it next to a more popular game I regularly see players get confused when it doesn't click in the first five minutes and decide they'd rather just play Tetris instead. I utterly loathe and despise Puyo Puyo Tetris 2. It's everything I hated…

I'd finally get to fulfill my dream of large offline tournaments. * Skullgirls - See above. * Stepmania - I was tempted to say Wacca or Chunithm, but in this scenario Stepmania would be ideal for nearly infinite content, as well as offering both keyboard and pad playstyles in one game. * Slay the Spire - My pick for casual second monitor content. neutral · AI labelView post →If you want functional online, the Switch version of Puyo Puyo Champions is the only title worth bothering with. Specifically Switch, other platforms are ghost towns. If you want singleplayer content, 15th Anniversary, 20th Anniversary, and Chronicle are all peak. None of these games were released outside of Japan and they're older titles you'll have to emulate, hence all my salt about the state of things today, but at least they do have fantranslation patches.
neutral · AI labelView post →Don't get your hopes up if you think you're going to buy it and start playing online with others right away. The playerbase is relatively small, with dozens of players online at the same time, it's not guaranteed that you'll be able to play against anyone. Still, it's Puyo Puyo, I like to play it mostly alone, so I don't regret buying it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Personally, I got this for PC because I am tired of using my clunky ass Switch. I like puyo puyo, so game good. The only issue is that there are less players on PC compared to switch. This might be a bit of an issue if you like to play online as you will have to wait longer for a match. But it is a 100% recommend if you buy during a sale or you really love puyo puyo single-player. If you have the game already for switch, it's better to stick to that if you're paying for the online membership.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a lot more than a downgraded version of puyo puyo tetris, it includes the fever mode and many others. If you already have puyo puyo tetris and you're just a more casual puyo player then I don't see a reason to get this. However if you are an experienced puyo player who really likes the series I'd say go for it, especially now since at the time of writing this its on sale for 3 bucks.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a cheap, accessible way to play Puyo Puyo online. Severely lacking as a puyo game in lot of ways, but it's okay. If you own either PPT game, there's not really much for you here. Biggest reason to pick it up is to play Fever online, which for me was well worth the price alone. But also this game reintroduced and localized both Serilly and Harpy, so I'm happy!! >w<

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'd love to see Puyo Puyo Champions / eSports get an update. It's feeling a little aged nowadays, and Sega don't update the game often due to it being a complete product that's used for tournament play.
