What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 182 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (700 of 758 positive).
Players praise Pyrene for its unique mechanics and fresh take on the deckbuilder genre. [1][2][3] Some reviewers find the game lacks depth and becomes repetitive after the campaign. [4][5][6] The art style, music, and polish are widely appreciated by players. [7][8][9]

At first, it was pretty good. You really have to think before you move. Exploring new upgrades and the talisman system was pretty fun. After the campaign, there are lots of options to tweak with to increase replay value. That's also where the game peaks. Tt doesn't feel that different most of the time afterwards. Character and item balance is not okay. There are a few occasions, that bald dude is just purely …

I would definitely recommend this game for roguelike deckbuilder fans, especially if looking for something mechanically different. It is impressive of how polished the game is and the plethora of quality of life features it has. It looks visually beautiful, it functions well (almost no bugs considering the different kinds of mechanics), the story is charming, and music is nice and relaxing. My only two critisisms …

I am impressed. I'm actually a bit burnt out with deckbuilders, and I feel like I've seen a thousand slight variations of the same tricks. Pyrene, however, manages to surprise me with a plethora of genuinely clever mechanics, and an overall fresh take on the genre. The game is very slick in its user interface and readability. It's one of those games where you just boot it up for the first time and you start playing, …

An incredibly unique deckbuilder with mechanics that I've never seen like that before. You initially search for the other villagers and later try to find and kill the one responsible for releasing all those monsters. This is a very story driven game as you will notice but it's …

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game was pretty mid. The campaign is short and after that it offers nothing but a couple of challenge modes. There isn't really any deck building, as you just get a handful of cards throughout the run and you just choose the strongest ones, no matter what "strategy" you're going for (there are no strategies, just overpowered legendaries and 2-card combos) and your success depends on getting an overpowered legendary or 2-card combo early. I also massively disliked the survival aspect after…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The idea is good, position based card game. I am trending negative on it for the following reasons. -No undo button. I am old and an idiot and i have recently adopted a cat that likes to sit on my keyboard. Playing with the mouse alleviates this a bit but I prefer the keyboard. -Enemies all feel the same. Even the bosses. They are just a number on a card. -The effects/strategies of the decks all feel the same. It doesn't feel unique or good to pull off your combo it feels exactly…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An entertaining little card game, but lacks the depth to have real staying power. Notionally a deckbuilder, but this plays more like a solitaire card game. Move around a grid of cards, attacking enemies, collecting goodies and grabbing your equipment (which can affect enemies, give healing or have other effects). Then you rest, the grid is refilled with more cards and you continue until you clear the area. Runs are quite short, just 8-10 fights, well under an hour. There are lots of…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"A Vibrant, Original Dungeon-Crawler. That More People Need to Play." Pyrene is one of those rare games that immediately feels fresh yet familiar in all the right ways. It’s a truly original title that deserves far more attention than it currently gets. While the overarching story of good vs. evil follows a classic structure, it’s handled with a surprising amount of depth and charm. The dialogue is sharp, thoughtfully written, and full of personality, helping the world feel lived-in and giving…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pyrene is a game very much worth it's price. Fun gameplay loop, story is a bit simple but fine for what the game tries to achive. The only downside for now is the lack of proper support for controller input, keyboard and mouse is fine. The game runs for example great on the steam deck performance wise, but controls are not great. Perhaps this will be fixed in the future.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nice concept but ultimately lacks depth. Encounters all feel very samey and the deckcrafting is not deep at all. I'm very on the fence on this one. The concept is unique and fun, the devs clearly cared about this when making it, but the game really needs something extra.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pyrene is one of the most complete Rougelikes deck-builders I played in years. The amount of well crafted, thought out content you are getting here is pretty astonishing - there are many characters, each playing very differently to another. There are 12 biomes, countless cards and relics, multiple builds you can absolutely snap into overwhelming death dealing super-combos. But the biggest strength lies, for me, in the astonishing degree of customization. You can edit your character stats.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoyed the demo pretty well so I bought this. However after the first couple of hours/characters the fun was gone for me. The challenge went away quickly. Game play felt very repeatitive and formulaic. The story was painfully predictable and felt preachy.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nice game from the makers of Forward and like their previous game I like the mechanics in this one too, similar but a bit more deep and very different from similar games around. Highly recommended!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was off put by the look of the game at first, but I kind of liked the first game from these devs so I gave it a try nonetheless. The mechanics of the game are cool but I wish the game was geared more towards replayability rather than just a story experience, which I didn't event bother to care about. Personally I think these kinds of games don't need a deep story, rather they should focus on gameplay, and in my opinion, Pyrene suffers because of it. There are too many characters (albeit…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish there was a more nuanced rating in Steam. I unlocked every character and completed the story and village. This was a cute game, original mechanics, interesting characters and play styles but ultimately very poorly balanced. Dodge is incredibly overpowered, as it avoids all combat damage AND combat debuffs and can be triggered by basic components like sleeping or using abilities. So each run either killed me in the first zone, or made me so powerful I could ignore most of the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pyrene, developed by Two Tiny Dice and published by Indie Asylum, is a roguelike deck-builder that immediately distinguishes itself with a strong sense of identity, both mechanical and thematic. Instead of taking place in a generic fantasy setting, it draws inspiration from Basque mythology, placing the player in the role of a villager whose homeland has been reduced to ruin by monstrous invaders. What begins as a simple quest for survival quickly becomes a cyclical journey of exploration,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I got this in a humble bundle with some other stuff so I didn't pay full price and it's not worth a fully buy. This game is very unbalanced depending which character you are using for a run and VERY rng if you get decent cards or relics for a specific build, or broken beyond belief. This game sits at both ends of the spectrum of super OP broken or worthless broken characters/cards/relics. I think the actual game mechanics for the most part are fine. Trying to use a character that focuses on…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is NOT a "fast paced roguelike dungeon-crawler" as described. It's leans heavy on puzzle than on what I thought would be an action/strategy game. It's not. To be honest, I found it really tedious and that background music zzz, zzz Try it and prepare to refund. Again, it's NOT a "fast paced roguelike".
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game balance is awful; you will get hard stuck on the second quest because the RNG is horrible and the game gives you too little to work with until it ramps up the difficulty. You often get 2-3 cards to work with on a whole run, making synergies nearly impossible.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really great little roguelike. Every new character feels different and interesting.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →cheeks be clenched. its surprisingly hard and punishing but at the same time you get broken out of nowhere which is pretty fun. some characters too easy tho. music is really good too good vibes all around
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's not very much fun and it gets boring really fast. I don't recommend this game unless you get a nice discount.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is almost addictive with the cool synergies you can big throughout each play. I always start weak and scared, and by the time I am at the final zone I am God. I once beat a final boss of a zone with literally 1 move. I recommend scaling up the difficulty of end bosses.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you haven't already, go play Pyrene it's such a great game! Cool mechanics, cool art, cool music, cool setting, cool pace (i completed it in about 12hrs - which is like the video game equivalent of a 1h30 movie). And if you have played it: go leave a review, they need some!
positive · AI labelView post →I really enjoyed my time spent with the indie game, Pyrene, in case you want to give something out of the blue a look 🤗
positive · AI labelView post →If you've played meteorfall krumits tale, this is a familiar grid based deck builder with it's own additions to the genre Pros -Good core gameplay, being a cross between a roguelike deckbuilder and a puzzle game -Lots of run customization/good replay value, while not meeting slay the spires absurd depth of replay value this is still well worth your money if you enjoy puzzle games and/or roguelike deckbuilders -Wide variety of character gimmicks with surprisingly good balance ignoring one…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tried out the demo for Pyrene this weekend and was very pleasantly surprised. The ease with which you get into the game mechanics, it just felt so smooth overall. Will have to grab this one when I find more time for playing. @twotinydice.com #cardgame

positive · AI labelView post →Gameplay: 9/10 Graphics & Sound: 9/10 Narration: 6/10 ✔️ Very cool roguelite gameplay based on card grid movement. ✔️ Lots of variety in the gameplay of individual characters, without being too railroaded into one single possible build for each character. ✔️ Smart way to have an explicit influence over what items are offered to you with the luck stat and the affinity scores for different mechanics. ✔️ The biomes you navigate have some pretty nice variety as well, each with their own…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun game, 100% is quite the grind, but the story and additional characters are quite fun!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A nice roguelike cardgame from the developers of forward: escape the fold. I spent 65 hours to play it to 100%, it has no unfair or grindy achievements. You have a lot of characters with different starting decks, abilities and relics - so everyone plays very differently. I picked this up on sale and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes card games and roguelikes.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The path making puzzle is just not interesting enough
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR - Simple concept that's well thought enough to be an interesting gameplay but not the most well tuned experience. Personal thought: ☐ A must-try, once-in-a-lifetime experience ☐ A masterpiece, regardless of its genre ☐ The peak of its genre ☐ Satisfied 🗹 A reluctant thumb up ☐ A reluctant thumb down ☐ I'd rather spend time and money elsewhere ☐ I regret buying this The game's introduction to the items, mechanics, and characters is very well-paced. Its gameplay foundation is solid and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you like rougelites card rng games try it if you want to, just be aware its a slog to play with some characters. 4.5/10.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Seems simple but gets complex without getting too complicated or frustating. Nails it!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I loved this game, highly recommended. It's just a solid strategy turn based combat experience that let's you customize how easy or hard you want the game to be. You unlock new characters with different play styles as you go, upgrade your village and clear as far as you can. Just a well done game all around.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just finished the main story. What a great game. Very creative and well designed. I hope to one day make a game with this much love put into it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pyrene by @twotinydice is next! This is only the demo, but once again, a game I meant to play ages ago & just never did! So let's take a look today! Thanks again @pressengine.net 💜 store.steampowered.com/app/2468100/...
neutral · AI labelView post →A big step forward from their previous game, Forward: Escape the Fold. Building synergies feels rewarding, but IMO the meta-progress is not engaging and the story is a bit cliché. The fighing is a bit monotonous, with the only feelable difference being your character skills. It has many modifiers to customise gameplay and a demo.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What game! Sucked me in for a whole night
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is my latest video game recommendation it's $9 on Steam or something like $5.89 on mobile / tablet and plays just as well either way. Reminds me a lot of a game I loved last year called Pyrene. If you like card games and deck builders and like...kind of puzzle mechanics this is a hidden gem.
neutral · AI labelView post →Pyrene is a cool little game. It seems simple and easy at the beginning, but gets harder and more complex as you progress further into the story and unlocks different characters. Each has somewhat unique playstyle and keeps the simple premise of this game fresh and interesting. You also need to pay attention all the time, I died several times just because I felt invincible and forgot about some hazardous game mechanic. I finished the story, played some special challenges with each character…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Engaging plot and characters, varied gameplay, motivating progression... so much potential! Unfortunately, as soon as I found an overpowered strategy, which was around hour 3, the game doesn't give me any incentive to mix it up, so I find myself optimizing the fun out of the game and just playing Mathilda and Echo+Whetstoning my Whetstone over and over again. Everyone else is like "Hey! Pick me!" and their movesets are cool but it's too tempting to just stick with the OP strat. If you, dear…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While I wish the game kept track of the player's best scoring runs (even if just locally), the actual gameplay is pretty fun. What starts as pretty basic mechanics, over successive runs, becomes more complex as your characters gain more unique abilities and the challenge you face in later stages gets nastier.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →simple ideas and extremely catchy gameplay loops. The music caught me off guard with some truly great tracks!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →WHY ARE ALL THE CHARACTERS BLACK OR BUTCH? EVEN JESUS IS BLACK.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Let's try ! Zelda (the princess figurine & the rupees) Dark Souls Celeste Hollow Knight Sol Cesto Minami Lane Pyrene (I love the French indie game corner!) Dragon Ball And... I'm sure a lot more 😀
neutral · AI labelView post →This game while I enjoyed it for the most part, just overall seemed pretty okay! Loads of characters but you can almost always play for the same cards and relics. Numerous biomes and enemies to explore but most feel the same over time! The concept and execution is very well done though, the gameplay is fair and there are tons of ways to make it easier or more difficult if you want. There are also a couple bugs I ran into and I wish there was a way to make the animations either go faster or skip…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Truly a hidden gem; criminally unknown.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've enjoyed my time playing this game so far. I've unlocked more than a handful of characters and their strategies are varied which keep each run feeling fresh. The difficulty is very well done (once you unlock the option early on) as it allows you to choose positive game play altering relics and buffs if you want to start a run with. All games should do this IMHO. If you enjoy simple jump in jump out 15 min run card and movement on a grid based games this game should satisfy you at the very…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you want a relatively new card game to play this is the one. Pyrene is very very fun! #VideoGames
positive · AI labelView post →Great roguelite with tons of gear choices to make. There's a good roster of playable characters that do offer some different play styles. There will be games where you fail or just about make it through and also runs where you find a ridiculous combo that allows you to steamroll every encounter.
