RAGE
Developer id Software
Rage is a first-person shooter video game developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks, released in October 2011 for Microsoft Windows, the PlayStation 3, and the Xbox 360, and in February 2012 for OS X. It was first shown as a tech demo at the 2007 Apple Worldwide Developers Conference and was announced at the QuakeCon. Rage uses id Software's id Tech 5 game engine and is the final game released by… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Bland. The gunplay is fine. The driving is fine. The story is as tropey as it can get. You wake up, Evil GovernmentTM is chasing after you, you beat them after teaming up with The ResistanceTM, the end. There is no final boss fight. You don't even see the main bad guy. It doesn't really do anything wrong but it absolutely does nothing good either.

It's like the casual-gamer's FPS. There's no character building and only a few upgrades allowed for each vehicle. So you're not really working toward anything, except beating the game. This is target practice for playing character-driven FPS shooters. That said, it's still fun. Decent action and solid gun-handling. Just don't expect more than that. I bought it on sale, so no regrets.

If there was ever a game that needed a remaster, this would be it. Rage is a fun shooter that suffered from a rushed development of both the game and engine. You could tell there was supposed to be more to the game but it's main story just ends. If Rage is ID's worst shooter, as Civvie says, then it's still an above average shooter.

I originally played Rage back in 2011 when it first launched. Despite the numerous visual bugs, particularly the notorious texture-loading issues, it was still an enjoyable experience. The game clearly felt a little unfinished, but even so, I had a lot of fun with it. I really liked the core idea and the world id Software created, and at the time it felt like a promising foundation rather than a fully realised …

I've played this game a lot more than the 20 hrs I show on Steam. It is a classic, I have played it on and off since maybe the year after it came out and it is a classic I keep coming back to. Ahead of its time for 2011, Good combat, interesting world, fun driving around in various vehicles, built-in mini games, and not too difficult. I know some people like super difficult games but if I die 20 times a row in the …

77% of the 206 Steam reviewers we collected recommend RAGE. The complaint that keeps coming up: short campaign and rushed story. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
The game received much recognition before its release. It won the Game Critics Awards of E3 2010 for "Best Console Game", and "Best Action Game", along with the "Special Commendation for Graphics". It also won many of GameTrailers's E3 2010 awards, including "Best New IP", "Best First Person Shooter", "Best PS3 Game", "Best Xbox 360 Game", "Best PC Game", and "Game of the Show". Rage received generally positive reviews on all platforms according to the aggregate review site Metacritic. neutral · AI labelView post →hot take: Rage-quitting games may have a negative connotation to it, but I think it's good, actually. Not, of course, if you quit a game to then go rage and break things, but if a game is genuinely upsetting you, you should really take a break. It's a good thing to do.

neutral · AI labelView post →This is now a game that serves as an example of how far gaming has fallen. Regardless of what one thinks of the game, it at least represented a time when studios would invest in their own craft and engines. 1997 is 14 years prior to Rage and 2025 is 14 years post rage. If I never saw Rage and it was being previewed in 2025, I may not know it was a game from 2011. If I was shown a preview of a graphical marvel in 2011 that was really from 1997, I would think it is a preview for a indie PSP…

neutral · AI labelView post →Rage is a game that was not badly received, but also not particularly loved, when originally released in 2011. Gamers overall had some fatigue with the post-apocalyptic genre by then, thanks to games in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, Borderlands, and Fallout 3; the latter is a stablemate thanks to Bethesda buying Id Software, meaning some Fallout Easter eggs were added in later updates. Rage introduced a new version of the "Id Tech" engine with Id Tech 5. infamously optimized for the opposite…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →From a dev perspective this game was literally revolutionary!! Why? tech 5 was the last engine Carmack worked on. For Rage he invented megatextures. Instead of texture tiles being reused ad infinitum in Rage it's one giant unique texture for the entire environment. It is one giant canvas artist could paint on directly. It is a pre-baked texture map hundreds of thousands of pixels wide. Only the tiles you can see are streamed into memory and as the player moves the engine predicts and fills in…

positive · AI labelView post →Rage has potential. At its core, it’s a good, entertaining post-apocalyptic first-person shooter. And the world has a lot to offer: bandit clans, mutants, shootouts with various weapons and types of ammo, Sentry Turrets, Sentry Bots, RC Bomb Cars etc., races with different cars, upgrades and weapons, side quests, and mini-games. In particular, the game’s own card game, “Rage Frenzy,” really stands out. I enjoyed collecting all the cards as I played through the game. It also has good…

positive · AI labelView post →Great game that always got a bad rap for some reason. It used to have an issue with texture pop in, but on modern hardware I'm not getting any at now. buy the DLC and use the rebar ammo in the Nailgun for so much fun, it should be illegal.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Never played this on release but really enjoying it. Good shooting, the driving aspects are quite fun and the world is pretty interesting. Well worth playing. (Steam defaulted to the 32bit version for me which caused endless crashes, make sure you change the boot option to 64 bit, not crashed since)

neutral · AI labelView post →It's honestly nothing spectacular for the most part. The 2010-2015 were full of uninspired singleplayer first person shooters and this one, unfortunately, doesn't really stand out. So if I were to be more objective, I'd probably suggest against buying it. But since it's extremely nostalgic to me, as you can see from the surprisingly high playtime, I still think it's worth it on a sale. Like I said, in terms of gameplay, it's nothing spectacular. Simple shooter with a ton of weapons for you to…

PR is very unique to the fighting genre as the dev thought of every possibility. It is possible to do up to 98% , but infinites are impossible even now. The combos have unique names!

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A great linear shooter trapped inside an open-world game. Once you get past the empty roads, there are detailed levels with clear layouts that intentionally loop around to avoid backtracking. The hub cities are filled with great performances from voiced characters who react to your progress throughout the game. The gunplay is fun too, especially once later enemies push you to experiment with different weapons and ammo types. Unfortunately, the side quests, errands, and races keep interrupting…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is alright, the graphics are really dated but have a nice artstyle. The overall story is a bit convoluted and it feels rushed. It's a short game so you should only buy it on sale. The DLC adds a bit of content as well. The 64bit version doesn't support multiplayer nor achievements but I found that out too late. I really don't want to play the game again to get them so this really sucks. 32bit is just so bad when the game has a memory leak issue. For the price it's fine but you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rage was a great game and it was so much fun back then, the Post-Apocalyptic setting combined with the Weapons was overwhelmingly enjoyable. I remember the Boomerang was my Favourite Head Slicer hah. The Graphics were also super crisp, no fkn TAA on the ship. Only Cons is its short playtime of roughly 10-15hrs Rage 2 on the other side is pure garbage, not comparable to his predecessor Rage 1 is 100%worth to play tho and 10 bucks is nothing for a game that is actually fun, on sale it drops…
