Red Matter
Developer Vertical Robot
Red Matter is a 2018 sci-fi virtual reality game developed and published by Spanish studio Vertical Robot. The player plays as Agent Epsilon, who crash lands on one of Saturn's moons, Rhea, and goes to explore a nearby military base belonging to the fictional People's Republic of Volgravia. The game received positive reviews from critics, who praised the atmosphere of the environments, but criticized some of the… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 191 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (1,075 of 1,191 positive).
Many players find Red Matter visually impressive and well-polished. [1][2][3] Several reviewers note the game is short, often under 4 hours. [4][5][6] Some players recommend buying it on sale due to the short length. [7][4][5]

I'd only ever buy this game on a sale in which it was less than 10 bucks at this point. I see people praise both the story and the amount of polish, but I found both utterly lacking. Polish wise there was Many times I found a bug just by existing, and not like QA tester bugs but "The devs knew this was wrong but never fixed it" type bugs. Story wise it's just, lacking, the entire plot is done to death at this point …

Experienced on the Meta Quest 2 You can view my review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/5dclO51kxvk Quite simply, this is one of the best VR puzzle adventure games. I would put it just a notch below the Lone Echo Series or The Room VR: A Dark Matter. Red Matter is solid all around. There are really no weakpoints to the experience. It's got top notch production values, along with really good gameplay. The visuals …

This has been an interesting little VR experience so far. I’m really liking the story and the puzzles. The puzzles aren’t extremely challenging. They’re just enough to make you think a bit, but not so much to make you need to google the solutions. Graphics and performance are excellent. Texture work is impeccable. It seems well optimized, and it’s always refreshing to have a game work the way it is supposed to. It …

Every VR gamer knows Red Matter (I think), so I probably don't need to explain what it is. It's a simplified adventure game that has slick production values at the expense of being very, very short. If you didn't know, now you know. I've known about this game for years and years, but only yesterday did I step foot on Mars. No, I had always thought it took place on Mars but it's really a moon of Saturn. I first saw …

Red Matter is an OK game. For the asking price of 25 bucks, I don't believe it is worth it. Buy on sale. I took my time going through the game and only got 3.6h out of it, and I even got all the achievements. That being said, let's shift the analysis from quantity to quality. Was that 3.6h good? I would say "yes with some caveats". The story is pretty good. It could have done with some more fleshing out, but it was …

Critics, per Wikipedia
Red Matter received "generally favorable reviews" according to Metacritic. UploadVR's Jamie Feltham praised the game's atmosphere, writing "there's the atmosphere, which is masterfully layered on. Red Matter's environments are intricately detailed with decorations and notes that flesh out the story in an authentic way". He criticized some of the game's later puzzles, "There are some duff notes with the puzzling, especially in the later levels where Vertical isn't as generous with clues as it should be". Scott Hayden, writing for Road to VR, liked Red Matter's visuals, saying that "Visually, Red Matter is a stunning showcase of the team's expertise in Unreal Engine. Textures are extremely…

There are many better puzzle games for VR. Despite this game being often recommended, it's pretty weak in a lot of ways... First off, the "puzzles" barely count as puzzles. There are like 2 real puzzles in the entire game and the rest of them fall into 1 of 2 categories: 1) You just have to follow a chain of interactables that can only be…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Runs smoothly standalone on the Steam Frame without stuttering or glitches. A few issues with running it streamed from Bazzite but that's more of an nvidia/linux/vrcompositor interaction on my PC. The puzzles are not too severe, but still give a satisfying feeling when you complete one. The story didn't end up where I thought it would. I was pleasantly surprised at the end. Might be a bit on the shorter side, but my only complaint there was that I was having a good time and would have liked…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a very good VR game but not as good as you'd expect it to be after all the feedback I read. The achievements are easy to get and you can get them all in the first playthrough if you're paying attention. I'd say that the game is a tad creepy at times. The controls feel a bit wonky, but not to the point that it annoys you. It's fine, but could be better. The puzzles are okay too. I liked the game, but it won't go to the "one of the best games I played" shelf.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →its pretty short so dont get it if its not on sale. probably like 5 hr long max if you take your time
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game with balanced, in terms of difficulty, puzzles. You probably will be able to manage all or almost all of them by yourself without the need to google solutions. Graphics is descent, story - interesting enough. The only negative part - motion is too slow, you are walking like a turtle, and flying is just slightly better. Also game physics is very clunky.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A VR reference title Works fine with PSVR2 Low-Medium Cyber Sickness Level I've recently learned that there's a PC Adapter for PSVR2 on PC since August and gave it a try. Having RM2 on PS5, I've decided to buy RM1 for PC (on discount atm) and test the PS5 VR headset with it. Controls are intuitive and the game offers a great variety of interactions and fun ideas (like the translator or the AI communicating with printed cards) and I'm having a blast with the OLED screen of the PSVR2. As for…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I finished the game in under three hours. I didn't rush, I took my time and hell I got all but three achievements without even trying. I don't understand, is this it? I'm playing red matter 2 now which is sooo much better. I bought the bundle but I feel totally ripped off on the first one.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well. I was waffling on this one, because the atmosphere and concept are alluring. But it's just a mediocre experience overall and can't get my recommendation. It's very short and sparse. There's just not much to see and virtually no exploration. Some reviewers are praising the graphics, but I found them to be far too simplistic. Puzzles are OK (there are only a handful of them), but they are marred by bad controls (I used Valve Index) and wonky physics. Nobody has figured out how to let you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the game stutters like crazy. It run between 20-60 fps in a given second. I had strong vr legs so I kinda just took it, but then the game crashed when I tried lowering the crane in the first room you enter.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A really pretty game held back by interesting design choices Really this game was both a hit and miss in its so many aspects. Its graphics are outstanding and stand up as one of the best in the VR industry - yet its heavy use of forced TAA really spoils everything that is further than 3 feet away with Vaseline smeared all over it. Then, while actually playing the game the smooth locomotion itself often gave me headaches, as it would dynamically change its movement speed based on your proximity…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very well made. An amazing achievement for a two member dev team. Puzzles are not difficult, but are engaging. Worked well on my HP Reverb G2 after switching to SteamVR.

neutral · AI labelView post →I'd recommend this game for under $20 for sure. My reasons are below: I've beaten the game in under 4 hours, a little short, but I'm very impressed. Like really impressed. Graphics are really good, not noticing any major bugs, story different but really enjoyable. Even the way of jumping between locations seems like floating in space, a really nice touch to the theme. I would say it's worth more then $20, if it wasn't for the American experience. Let me explain, the whole story about an…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Finished RM got 95% of the achievements. That's all but 1. I plan a 2nd playthrough on whatever VR HS I might get in the future. This is how VR should be used. This game was definitely my kind of experience. Reminds me of slow moving sci-fi like Silent Runnings, etc. The settings were drop dead gorgeous. I took my time throughout so I wouldn't miss anything. Everything others said annoyed them (like the guy periodically communicating with you via radio) I really liked. It felt…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent VR sci-fi game, worked well with my HP Reverb G2. Graphics, environments and gameplay is very good, puzzles are well balanced with increasing difficulty although not super challenging. I enjoyed it so much that I really wished it was longer, but nevertheless I definitely recommend this game!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A solid VR game, with some perfectly set puzzles - which are challenging but never impossible. Great atmosphere and story to boot. Minor criticism is that the ending had some pretty hammy voice acting. Valve Index, 4080 rtx, i5 36000k - plays well at 120hz 130% SS. 8/10 would pass a loyalty test again
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to commend the developers for making the first and only anti-communist, anti-Soviet video game. Truly a pioneer in the industry and hopefully a trend setter to teach us about the evils of these working men and their science facilities that we intrude into as good and honest CIA agents. One day maybe another game company will be so brave and controversial as to imply that any future with an alternative to capitalism MUST by default be a dystopia.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Looks great, but story and puzzles feel secondary to the environment. Not necessarily bad, just keep this in mind.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played through this all in one go.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I got this game in a bundle with Red Matters 2. I was interested into the sequel but the reviews led me to believe I probably wanted to play the first one too. Well, maybe I will get a better grasp on the story but I wouldn't recommend getting the 1st game at full price. It is a really small game at less than 3GB, and the graphics are simply not that good. I am sure a Quest could run this game on its own (no need for PCVR). This is a really short game. I completed it in approx 3.75h, while…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very good VR game! Story is a bit short, but graphics and puzzles are very well made. And most importantly, you can grab and interact with a lot of objects in a intuitive way. It is so satisfying that doors keep closed when you swing them shut! Only the movement is a little different to other games I've played, but I got used to it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Control design makes this title functionally unusable. Imagine you buy a car, and the steering wheel causes it to turn the opposite of any other car, and the bakes are activated by blinking you left eye rapidly, and there is no way to fix those issues. That's what trying to play Red Matter is like. The controls are incredibly poorly designed, rendering this essentially unplayable. Skip it until the devs actually bother to design controls like other VR titles.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The story is somewhat interesting, and the soundtrack is nice, but that's about it. The controls and locomotion - well, I know this released back in 2018, but still.. Really? There's teleport and some weird "jump(?)" locomotion for long distances, but you're better off just using Teleport for both. The grippers I kinda understand, not using your hands directly, and the controllers actually being kinda physical, but then you end up with some weird hand offsets. Lone Echo released a year before…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →very laggy in 2026, just get one from the meta store if you are playing on quest to avoid the headache. tried Virtual desktop, steam vr, airlink
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this is a great game for vr , it has a great story line so it draws you into the story making this game really enjoyable
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Everytime i got stuck in this game was due to me forgetting the ability of rotating objects and look under them. Plus, got softlocked right in the beginning. Puzzles are pretty easy. If you got stuck then maybe you overlooked something. Controls seem wonky (Quest 2) and "flying" feature only makes worse for ppl with motion sickness. Walking may slow down for no reason like you're walking through the mud. Yet you can run fast through the table with no collision. It takes less than 3 hours to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →amazing experience!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Short and thoroughly polished, both in gameplay and visuals. It knows what it wants to carry out and does so in style, leaves a lot of newer and much more expensive VR projects in the dust! Can't wait to check out the sequel
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is not an action game. It's a puzzle game. I think the full price is too high, considering the length of the game. So I recommend to buy the game on a discount.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've probably sunk the most amount of time into Beat Saber, a music rhythm game, and Racket NX, a racquetball meets breakout type of game. Both are the most fun! Also, the "I Expect You to Die" series (not scary), Moss, Red Matter 1+2. Job Simulator is always entertaining.
positive · AI labelView post →Nice, short puzzle game. Very nice graphics, wish they made more VR games with this kind of graphic fidelity.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My favorites are the story-based puzzle/escape room ones; VR is the perfect medium for them; figuring stuff out in an immersive space where it's just you & your thoughts. RED MATTER 1 & 2, GHOST TOWN, THE ROOM, 7TH GUEST. I'm so so sad when I beat the game & don't yet have a new one to get into.
positive · AI labelView post →A short adventure, but very well designed, it was a pleasure to play it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →[1/2025] Played on Quest 3 wireless with Meta Quest Air Link on Windows 10. The game has been in my library since 2019 and after playing it, I should have played it much sooner. The VR interactions are well thought out and easy to understand. The graphics are really good (way better than some modern games) and the sound is atmospheric too. The puzzles are nice and not too challenging (including the safe combination, which was a simple logical puzzle, even if some people have trouble with it). I…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Madison VR if you're into horror. Red Matter 2 for visual spectacle (your jaw will be on the floor). Gran Turismo 7 for the best PSVR2 experience and game. Resident Evil 4 Remake and Village. Star Wars was fun as a fan and Into the Radius if you like STALKER games.
neutral · AI labelView post →literally incredible top 3 vr games alyx, red m, saints sinners 10/10 (finished on rift)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Decent puzzle game, but very short (2.5 hours) for the asking price, so I'd only recommend this on a sale. Nitpick: The flashlight is really weird and pointless in the game, you have to hold the trigger for max brightness. It replacing your left hand tool also makes it that much more annoying to use. Should've been on/off toggle on the right hand. The game does not use the grip button at all, so interacting with stuff is kinda annoying at times, but definitely not an issue.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Short, but really good linear game with decently difficult puzzles. Looks great with dynamic shadows and reflections and performance is really good, although occasionally there are some FPS drops, probably due to shader compilation stutter, as it's on Unreal Engine - you just need to wait for a few seconds and it's back to 90 FPS, so a bit of an issue, but one you can live with (I think they fixed it in the sequel). The way the controls work are one of the most immersive VR controls I saw in…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Red Matter 1&2 are gorgeous puzzle games. The default locomotion method might make you nauseous though. You can change it to teleportation if so. Cubism is a simple, but extremely polished game that’s a fantastic showcase for mixed reality. Last Clockwinder, Pistol Whip, I Expect You To Die.
positive · AI labelView post →Bugged - impossible to progress past the power generator room. Try as I might I cannot complete the circuit board puzzle in the generator room. The first circuit board all the fuses click into their matching sockets on the board perfectly. The second board, they are forcibly launched away from the board as if two matching magnetic poles. This makes it impossible to complete the second board required to progress. The game is unplayable in this state and therefore I can only recommend…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →graphically very impressive but outside of that i don't really have much positive stuff to say about it. I found it to be one of those 'run around with no idea what i'm supposed to do next' kinda games. idk maybe i'm just stupid.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Accidentally bought this thinking this was Lone Echo because forgot how the game was called. Was bored pretty fast and realized that it's not that game in space everyone was praising
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →best graphics ive seen on HPG2 vr. good soundtrack, good puzzles. this and RM2 are great
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is an ideal starting point for VR novices. It resembles an adventure or escape room experience, requiring players to unravel puzzles, manipulate levers, locate specific switches, and more. Its leisurely pace allows ample time to acclimate to the VR environment and grasp its fundamentals. The storyline is imbued with mystery, featuring subtle elements of horror that add to its allure without being overly frightening. For those embarking on their VR journey, Red Matter comes highly…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →around 5 hours of game, nice and funny one so i bought the 2 to continue the story. This is a good VR experience with good gameplay, no bad surprises. I played on Quest 2 and 3. All working well
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Interesting project. 2-4 hours of gameplay. The puzzles hit the sweetspot - not too easy, not too hard. Alot of interaction with the environment. Graphics are really amazing. If you do not own it I recommend getting it, especially on sale
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a fair game, but If it had a neutral rating I would give it that. The problem with it is that it is a very short game, while the price is high. It is effectively a 3 hour adventure (friends and acquaintances have tried it at my place, so I'm between 4-5 hours). For the 25€ price tag, you can almost always choose from a multitude of AAA+++ games that are superior to RM in every way. Sure, of course the VR and the immersion are bigger here, but you'll finish in one short afternoon.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Decent story, enjoyable VR experience, very short so recommend purchasing when on sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just purchased the Red Matter Collection. Apparently im not the only one whos having problems. Cannot get past Initial Crash site due to game acting like i have INDEX controllers, when i have HTC VIVE. Spent 30 mins trying to fix and debug the issue to no resolve. Community Devs are slow or none responsive. Game Dev Email is slow, short in replying. At this point, i have lost interest in playing any Red Matter Game or giving this company my money. And will be boycotting them in the future.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There is a mini game in Farcry 6 that makes up about .5% of the entire game where you are involved with Russians and monsters. This "mini" game was many times better than Red Matter and was much more enjoyable in every way. The sparse nature of the environments in Red matter kind of leave it flat - the story is very weird with no real determination. At the end you are left guessing - What was that? The puzzles often have no hints and are blindingly frustrating. If you manage to get this game on…
