What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 154 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (3,789 of 4,114 positive).
Players praise the game's unique blend of tower defense and boulder-rolling gameplay. [1][2][3] Many enjoy the humorous Monty Python-inspired art style and story. [2][4][5] Some note the campaign is short but still fun and worth the low price. [6][7][8]

Has fun mechanics, but it's quite easy (unless you're trying to collect every key or beat the gold medal times) because the AI is bad at controlling its boulder. You can mostly ignore the tower defense aspect and still win. It's probably a lot better against humans, but unfortunately nobody is playing anymore (so I can't get the last 2 achievements TT ).

Sadly the campaign is only 3 hours long but honestly this game is a lowkey masterpiece. Insanely fun and original.

Simple Fun Rock of Ages is a quirky blend of tower defense, racing (using a boulder) and good humour. The core gameplay involves rolling and guiding a giant boulder down a track to smash through enemy defenses and ultimately their castle door, while also building your own defenses to stop your opponent’s boulder. Pros: Unique and chaotic mix of genres Hilarious art style inspired by historical art Fast-paced, …

Among the classic 2010's Youtuber games, Rock of Ages is a title that holds up surprisingly well. The core gameplay is pretty straightforward, involving a tower defense mode where you place various units to defend your gate, and once that's done, you get to control your very own giant boulder in an attempt to smash your opponent's gate, this being definitely the highlight of the game. It's a funny way to put it but …

Rock of Ages is what happens when someone asks what if Monty Python made a tower defense game and the answer is a screaming boulder with legs. You roll a rock, smash castles, get bullied by physics and somehow it never stops being funny. The art style looks like a history textbook got possessed by a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ demon and the gameplay is simple but weirdly satisfying. It’s janky in places, but you’re not here for …

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For starters, this game revolves around the magnificent concept of controlling a boulder down a slope in order to destroy the enemy's castle gate. That's pretty cool. The controls feel a bit janky at first but you get used to them, and the strategy needed for the defensive phase is nice. The irony and humor of the settings and (simple) story tie the whole thing together. It's less polished (and much more linear) than the sequel, but I highly suggest playing it cause it's honestly just a really…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It costs almost nothing on sale and is a genuinely unique idea for a game. Don't expect the multiplayer scene to be thriving 15 years after release, but the campaign is more than enough content for the abovementioned discount price. Hell, I'd say it's enough even for the full price, not like it's expensive even then. In terms of compatibility: runs fine on my machine but I didn't drink the kool-aid of Win11 so inb4 the 10 kernellion spyware prevents it from launching on that OS or smth. Oh and…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A super fun time, with great gameplay and a truly unique and distinct visual style reminiscent of Monty Python. Love the look, love the idea, love the bosses, love the humour, love the game. Definitely something worth checking out, and something I strongly recommend.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An old game that is still a lot of fun to play. I really enjoyed the attack/defend aspect of it which was simple but very well executed. Some levels are definitely a lot more fun than others, but overall this game "ages" like wine.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rating: 6/10 -Above Average Rock of Ages might be one of the weirdest and most unique indie games I've played in recent time. You are Sisyphus that gets tired of pushing his boulder up up the hill for eternity. He starts using his boulder to eliminate Hades and famous leaders. This is the moment where the game really gets weird and funny. It has cutscenes that are inspired by Monty Python historical art edits. There are two main parts of the gameplay. The attack gameplay and the defense…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A different take on the tower defense genre with very unique features. I played this game back when it came out and replayed it recently because I had good memories of it. Both experiences were equally memorable. The gameplay, especially for the time, was a breath of fresh air. It introduced new concepts to an already heavily explored genre and somehow made everything mesh well to create a enjoyable product. In most levels there are 2 phases: base defense and attack phase. While defending,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a neat evolution of those old marble platformers. While those were more about completing challenges with precision, here precision rewards you with faster time, less damage, and shortcuts. I love how the weight and power of the boulder is balanced with its fragility and changes as it takes damage. Smashing stuff is fun and rewards you with money, but you also have to save yourself to bash down the enemy’s door. Both you and your opponent split your efforts between navigating boulders…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fun game. Sadly its a bit outdated in the sense of graphics settings (maximum is FullHD) and a bit buggy. But other than that you have a very fun little game here for an afternoon or two. Im on a quest of at least trying every game in my library, of which I got plenty from all kinds of bundles, not all though. If you are interested in my journey, check out my other reviews :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →8/10 Very fun game, even funnier story The defense planning is definitely the weakest point, and the online achievement was very annoying to get Besides that, it is a game with a lot of heart put into it

positive · AI labelView post →Rock of Ages Fun, Simple and still a Great Game! Really worth trying! Rock of Ages is a tower defense game with an absurd story and a very unique sense of humor. The game includes destruction physics, resource management, obstacle racing, and the possibility to attack your opponent’s base, an uncommonly explored mechanic in this genre that is very well implemented, especially for a game that’s over a decade old. Gameplay: Fun gameplay with a good variety of game modes and competitive…
