TL/DR: If you watch speed runs of old RPGs where the runner skips as many battles, and most of the story, as possible and just focuses on getting an ending and think "huh, I wish the game required me to play like this" then you may enjoy this game. If you actually want to PLAY the game you're trying to play, skip it. I've never seen a game that more heavily punishes the player for actually playing the game. I wanted …

Today, after starting a new save this weekend, I finally beat Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song. I bought it in 2023 for the Switch, got to the final boss, couldn't beat him, and gave up. But today I did it. I really think I'll remember it as one of my favorite games, and yet I don't think I could recommend it to anyone unless I know for a fact they'd be comfortable with what is effectively a 20+ hour puzzle box. Because …

Critics, per Wikipedia

Upon release, the game topped the Famitsu sales charts from February 1992 to March 1992. By 2002, Romancing SaGa had sold 970,000 copies in Japan, ranking as the fifth best-selling SaGa title at the time. As of 2004, the Super Famicom original has sold over 1.3 million copies worldwide; over 1.1 million were sold in Japan, with further overseas sales adding 150,000. Famitsu magazine's panel of four reviewers faulted the game's graphics as inferior to those of Final Fantasy, but lauded the freedom of choice given to players through its narrative and gameplay progression. Super Famicom Magazine praised the game's Free Scenario System, which allowed players to repeatedly enjoy the game however…

I already had this game on the PS2, so I knew I was a fan before this came out. The game is really great. It's a little hard to know where to go sometimes, but I like that about the game. It's a SaGa game, so it's pretty non-linear and your stats go up based on how you use the character (that's the basic SaGa disclaimer). So far, it looks like it's the same game, with a couple of extra bits. The game runs smoothly for me on my pc, so I can recommend this game easily. It is definitely worth $25…

I have never played a SaGa game before this. The experience of this game has been like discovering a strange alternate dimension where people never invented the wheel, and all land vehicles are instead propelled by spider leg appendages. How did this happen? Shouldn't Occam's Razor have kicked in somewhere? And the weirdest thing is that the spider legs seem perfectly functional after some initial confusion. A wheel would clearly still be better, but you can see how people live with it. I see…

Imagine a typical JRPG. The brave hero of destiny has to explore the world to find the 8 magical macguffins to keep the Big Bad from breaking the seal that binds him. The world gives the player hints and tidbits leading them to the different items or dumps them in an area with a town and a couple of dungeons and doesn’t let them leave, forcing them to find some story thread that leads them to the next part of the adventure. All the while the big bad’s plan is paused by some unknown cause that…

The leveling up structure ruins this absolutely charming game. The artwork is unique; the attacks are diverse; the strategies abound. Unfortunately, as another reviewer has recognized, the 'leveling up' structure is such that the enemies parallel your advancements step for step. Meaning as you grow stronger so does each enemy--and they generally start off ahead of you from the jump. Sad :(

One of the deepest hidden gem from the PS2 era, technically a remaster of a remake of the SNES version. Do be warn, the game is quite punishing. It doesn't follow the cookie cutter rpg direction. The SAGA (especially this title) games are know for their free-scenario system, meaning.. It's entirely open to how the player wants to shape the story from the start and because of that, you can feel completely lost if you aren't used to the this style of story advancement. Like wandering to certain…

I bought this game because I have never heard any of my peers talk about it nor have I ever experienced a SaGa game. It's an SquareEnix game and I've only heard the OST from the different entries. My experience with this game is with literally 0 information, no guides, just kind of trial and errorring it. This is probably one of the best games ever. It's definitely an acquired taste; but then again if you have stumbled upon it you'd probably like it. Fans of Final Fantasy will enjoy this. It has lots of hidden mechanics and is a very 'hands off' game. There IS a story, but depending on which character you choose you may only have a 15 minute intro and then get sent out into the world with almost no direction. It is mainly a game about going from town to town learning about the world and…

I'm floored by the quality of life changes from the original. Normally I see remasters as a sort of 'new coat of paint' treatment, that doesn't ever truly live up to the implication. This? This nails it. Back on the PS2 I would have called it a flawed masterpiece. Now it's a shining gemstone of the genre.

Very few JRPGs can live up to it. Like all SaGa games, it might be hard to get into, to understand. Casual Final Fantasy grinders might dislike it on purely hypothetical grounds, without meeting it on the right terms. That's fine, play what you want. But if you truly love seeing what JRPGs can do, exploring the ways they can make you think and work, Minstrel Song rewards you. I'm sad that I got all of the cheevos over the course of 263 hours and 10 playthroughs, because that means it's…

A faithful remaster of a PS2 remake of an SNES game. The beauty of this RPG is that you can do the journey in any way you like. Don't feel like doing a quest? Well don't. Go explore a bit, talk to new NPCs and find new things to do. I still haven't experienced the bonus content exclusive to this version, so I might update the review after experiencing that. At the time of writing this, I've only beaten the game with Gray, and I'm about to go into New Game +. If you haven't played any of the…

I can confidently say that this is one of the most captivating games I've ever played given the masterful (English) voice acting and thoughtfully devised RPG mechanics set for replayability. A truly underrated gem, that's for sure, and I just don't know who's left at Square to pick up Kawazu's torch.

I never left a review, but I felt I had to with Minstrel Song. I've been playing the game since it was released for PS2 and I still play to this day. So why do I think this game so interesting? (1) Complete freedom to play how you want. You don't need to do any quests (and you won't do all of them without a guide and that’s totally fine) (2) Every battle you have the opportunity to spark a weapon technique and most of them are quite useful (3) You don't need to heal after each battle, giving a…

I'll be honest: It's not my favourite SaGa. But it is up there for a lot of people, and for good reason. It's the only one that makes me scared of BR (level scaling). I've got no recollection of ever forcing BR to progress, unlike SaGa Frontier and Romancing SaGa 3 where I would feel like grinding was needed to get those up. This might be because it's tied to the progression of the game in this one. On the note of BR, if you're scared of failing quests... You won't be scared for long. Muscle…

I love romancing saga, while i definitely think its worth a try there are some nuances to it. 8 main characters to choose from, and once picked, you'll get some story and opening to them and then you're left with a world to explore. You can have up to 5 characters in a party, with many out there ready to be recruited, others having quest requirements, and some not available till much later. This was a top 5 PS2 title. I still have my copy, and I still have the SF version on a shelf. I've even fired it up in emulators multiple times over the years. Great game. This is an excellent version of the game. This is how FF7 should have been handled, instead of a re-imagining. I'm a huge fan of the SaGa series, and I absolutely love and recommend this game, with a few caveats. This game is intensely deep, complex and layered in it's mechanics, which, in a first playthrough, might overwhelm any neophyte. I certainly felt overhwelmed starting out when I first played it on the PS2, and I definetely chose the wrong character to start with then (Pro tip: don't pick Gray first!). I adore the setting and lore of the world of Mardias, and I can see why the SaGa team picked…

I spent more time in Gamefaqs than playing this game back in the ps2 era

This game brings a lot of awesome QoL features to the table (the biggest prolly being able to see yer Event Rank in the main menu), but it pretty much turns the game into a generic mobile JRPG. Gone are builds completely dependent on what you do, that you can grind out to be extremely powerful. Instead, you use jewels that you get from quests to level up the skills and spells that yer chosen class allows, and the new BP/DP/LP system directly link skill/spell cost to how much jewels you've…

Great game. Loved it on the PS2. Unfortunately, I purchased to play on my Steam Deck since it says Verified; however, the game simply will not boot on the Steam Deck. I've tried reinstalling, verifying local files, playing on PC, even streaming from PC to Steam Deck-- Everything seems fine, but as soon as I try to play directly on the Steam Deck it does not load and seems to stick in a neverending cycle of trying to open the game without loading or any error. Still a good game, and I've seen…

Received the new International version of Romancing SaGa -Minstrel Song- Remastered! There's a nice manual and gorgeous artworks. It's joining my SaGa family (I also have Romancing SaGa 3, and SaGa Frontier 1 & 2 on Steam)

A SaGa game through and through, this game will either cause you to tear your hair out or wail in ecstasy (likely both). +Open ended nature allows for a lot of variance +Phenomenal music +Boss fights are always thrilling +Strong sense of place in locations +Brutal difficulty is oddly fair in being accommodating toward most party builds -Camera works against you more often than not -Rough voice acting -Enemy density and speed is exhausting, often being clustered and impossible to outrun, which…

Listen.. DO NOT GET THIS GAME IF YOU ARE AN AVID LEVEL GRINDER! Apparently enemies get harder based on the number of encounters and leveling does not increase your power by much. I ground(?) enemies in the starting area for 3 hours before moving on. I now have no money, and 90% of enemies are one-shotting me. I learned my lesson. The only reason I bought this is because I felt the urge to level grind in a turn-based rpg. Well ♥♥♥♥ me that miss-fired hard. Now I have a game which actively…

I had an extremely good time engaging with Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song. It's world is extremely open to the player if they're willing to give it the time to explore, and I adored the cast of characters you get to both play as, and interact with. The game is a faithful adaptation of the original Romancing SaGa for the SNES. I'm impressed most with how the visuals feel like they're simply out of time - that they haven't aged a single day since it's original release on the PS2. Walking among…

Finding an open world JRPG that channels Daggerfall was the most pleasant surprise I’ve had all year. This is basically my dream JRPG and a massive hidden gem. Plus, I think you can suplex bad guys.

Dont buy this if you want to murder hobo grind for exp. On top of making enemies stronger and not doing much for you, It just feels like a bad ending to many side stories if the world clock progresses due to battles and you couldnt help the people. I thought it cant be that bad! But after a few hours it just turned my save into a mess of very difficult fights and unhappy people everywhere. So its more about avoiding enemies with smoke bombs (Rechargable at inns) and experiencing the side…

It finally happened. SaGa finally clicked for me. I owned this game as a kid on the PS2, but was never able to get very far. I was always comparing it to Final Fantasy X or some other game I owned. Fast forward to today, playing the Remastered version, and I totally agree with all the fans of the series that there is no other series of games like it. There is far more depth and customization in this game than most JRPGs. Yes, the story takes a backseat, but it came off like a fun, melodramatic…
