What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 204 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (4,280 of 4,571 positive).
Some reviewers praise its prehistoric setting and innovative mechanics like crop domestication. [1][2][3] A few players criticize the game's slow pacing and lack of endgame content. [4][5][6]

TL;DR: It's a standard farming sim with a stone age coat that goes through a midlife crisis at the end. So I went into this because of the concept. Paleolithic fantasy has always been a thing of fascination, just imagine figuring out the things we know as a matter of fact now in a time when those things needed to be discovered. You have to figure out taming animals, growing crops, watermills, toolmaking - it's not …

So for years this game has been recommended to me. Honestly I was put off by the terrible chibi art used in all advertising. I went looking for the negative reviews that all said the game was just another stardew valley rip off with little unique to it. After playing some real bad cozy games lately I thought it couldn't be worse than those so lets try it. This game is amazing. I can't believe I waited so long to try …

Easily my favorite Stardew-like game, I might like it even more than Stardew! Adorable art style, enjoyable progression with the ideas mechanic and crop (and animal!) domestication, cute puzzles, and overall very relaxing and fun gameplay. I really enjoyed breeding animals to get better stats, including a better mount, and hunting down the rare variations of the animals. I absolutely love the variety of mounts to …

This game is WONDERFUL and deserves way more attention and traffic than it currently gets. Maybe like many of you, I found this game mentioned on a couple lists of things to try out after Stardew Valley -- I had achieved Perfection and also had a few other play throughs, so with 400+ hours in that game, I was excited to try something new. But I was skeptical I'd find something that I'd love as much and just assumed …

This might be the only farming sim I've ever played that has a system for domesticating crops over time! It has a lot of unique features that I really enjoy, like the mount system. Some minor complaints: - The skintones for Black and brown characters are usually really ashy/desaturated, which is unfortunate. Please, give them some colour! Dark skintones are vibrant IRL! - Darker-skinned NPCs almost always have …

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've seen a few other reviews wishing for a neutral rating instead of just 'yes or no', and I can't help but wish for the same. Is the game worth the price and effort to comfortably almost complete it? Sure. Is it worth anything after the fact? Nope, won't even be memorable enough for a replay. I recommend this game for the "cozy" fun of a farming sim and getting to know the characters and feeling really immersed in your efforts as the player character of the story. It's also got engaging…

neutral · AI labelView post →I like these kind of games. A lot. And I must honestly say that when it comes to implementing common genre tropes: Roots of Pacha does it best. So, you won't miss one fruit and then have to wait a whole year for the right season to come back around. You don't have to keep the wiki open at all times, write notes and still miss things for later. Roots of Pacha manages to let you play without bogging new players down with WAAAAYYYYY too much information to keep track of. And as someone that…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ok, so I finished the game, as in I'm part of the 0.9%, and the main reason I can't recommend the game is because the second half of it is an absolute SLOG. It stopped being fun 100 hours ago, but I wanted to get the ending. The animal husbandry takes FOREVER, and the ending I was presented with simply does not justify all the boring repetition I had to go through. Aside from that, the pacing of this game is just wonky. It takes half the game to meet all the characters (including all the…

positive · AI labelView post →If you like chill farming sims in general and have a non-pedantic interest in prehistoric culture (got to be able to let a lot anachronisms go) this is a worth the low price. Plays similar to Stardew, but with some interesting twists and doesn't seem like its in such a rush. There are seasonal crops, but that 28 day limit becomes less of one the more you play. I like the exploration in the world and the way it expands as you become ready for it. A great balance of farming, exploring, and social…

neutral · AI labelView post →I really love this game. Its super creative, pretty to look at and there is lots to do. I followed the development of it for years. However, I only have 30 hours because I always end up getting frustrated. I think it needs some real quality of life changes. So many things are hard for no reason. Several things take too many clicks to accomplish like auto sorting or auto transfer. Its not really auto at all. There should just be one button to allow us to do it. We also should be able to craft…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is CRIMINALLY underrated. I think the promotional art does it a bit of a disservice. It makes it look a little kid-ish when in reality it's an incredibly nuanced and well-thought out game. Just the sheer level of detail makes it so clear that this game was a labor of love. Each character has their own little dance animation? The in-game numbered clock appears once you discover sundials? It's incredible! The art style of the male romantic interests, in my opinion, isn't the best, but…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So, normally, I don't bother to review farming sims - they have a dedicated playerbase and fangroup and don't really need my help However, this one is kind of special - I've recommended it to two of my best friends and even bought it for a sibling, so, I thought I'd throw my impressions of the game from the smattering of time I've spent with it There's no combat - gonna go ahead and get that out of the way - like, if you enjoy Harvest Moon's more laid back take (as opposed to Rune Factory or…

positive · AI labelView post →I really tried to give this one a shot, but it got too repetitive and grindy. You are super slow and at the beginning you're just wasting all of your time running around. I know you get things to help with that, but it was making it unbearable for me so I used a mod to make me move faster. I enjoyed the animal mechanic at first, but over time the mini game just got annoying. Domesticating plants was interesting, but also really grindy. I finished all of the totems and I finished the prophecies…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It’s just a bit too sweet for me. There’s not much about this game I can say is objectively bad. The one thing I think was an unambiguously poor choice was the lack of a narrative framing to explain the player’s presence in the tribe. It seems to communicate that you’re already an established member with a bit of history with them, which creates a bit of dissonance with the fact that you’ve got no knowledge of the NPCs as a player, and a relationship status of zero as a character. It also…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →fun to play. Lacks an end game goal/goals. By the time you can breed a high stat animal there is nothing you need it for. Same with high end crops, nothing to strive for.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →YOOOOO I didn't expect this to be such an amazing game! Instead of following the usual formula to the farming sim genre (what people like to call "SDV clone"), Roots of Pacha actually does quite a few original takes to its features. The little details like there's no "gold/silver quality tools" becos the metals are soft and much more suited as jewelry and the pre-historic technology developed from using stones to obsidian to bronze... agriculture development from seeds of crops found in the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't trust crowd-funding, particularly considering the publisher here. At the very least, they have 4 games on steam with mixed reviews. Most people might not care, but also there was the Roots of Pacha dispute... plus the publisher doing unpaid promotion (using many accounts, and I suspect this isn't great for devs). That and crowd-funding being a cornerstone of their business model (on top of community QA) on its own doesn't seem right to me.

neutral · AI labelView post →Weirdly enough I enjoy this game more than stardew and I haven't even romanced anyone yet! the stories are lovely, the farming is nice, and the progression feels good. it doesn't feel like I'm gaming to get a hit of dopamine or the best items. it feels nice just to discover the animals, the villagers and the prophecies. I guess my only complaint if at all is that the stamina feels very limited and the stamina recovery is a tad slow
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →13 hours in and I have no intent to come back to it. Started promising and there wasn't anything outrageously bad but just, feel like progression is too slow and not meaningful enough already. There is no combat, which doesn't help, since even rudimentary combat helped break things up in Stardew. In this game's version of the mines you go there and hit rocks until your energy is gone. Yay. The taming mechanic and the trapping mechanics are both absoluite snoozefest chores. And so is animal…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Maybe we were all just burned by EA and the like, but the amount of content this game contains without having to buy DLC surprised me again and again. The game mechanics and gameplay felt familiar and still captured me. I would've liked an actual use for the amphitheatre, but that's a negligible aspect in my opinion :) I did have to play a few hours to get into it but now it finally did I have played nothing else for the past months. I'm done now though, having completed all achievements.

My playtime for this game is getting close to approaching my playtime for Stardew - and frankly, I already know I'll be playing this more than Stardew. The beginning of the game feels like an actual beginning, settling into a new, unfamiliar land and picking up the ropes are what you can do. The way you progress upgrades and ways to make new items is really nice, and makes you feel like you're really working together with the folks who are…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A solid Stardew Valley-like, with a few minor tweaks. Roots of Pacha is a slow paced, cosy farming sim, with the unique twist of being set in the Stone Age. The setting works surprisingly well, and is used in a few interesting ways. (Though I was a bit saddened at the lack of dinosaurs, realism be damned.) The gameplay mostly sticks to the Stardew Valley formula, and it works just as well here. It's got a few unique ideas of its own; nothing too revolutionary, but they generally work…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A lot less static then other Harvest moon/stardew valley types, feels like the tribe is actually trying to improve/grow without you being the only one doing anything. You are still vital to major discoveries and advancement in a good way however. Lots of plant and animal variety. Wish the boy choices were as good as the variety of girl choices. Still three tribes worth of npcs, and none feel too shallow. very good cozy style game.

The start was a bit slow. Need to gather seeds myself, don't know what I might need so I don't dare to sell stuff, tools too weak to remove big obstacles, etc, the usual. A few hours in, it opened up more, when I…

There was some hesitation to starting Roots of Pacha because I wasn't really into the tribal scene. However, it was on sale so I decided to give it a whirl anyways and I AM SOOOO GLAD I DID. neutral · AI labelView post →I appreciate that they tried something different here, and I did enjoy the game to the extent that I kept playing until I had completed all the totems. I enjoyed growing crops, cooking, decorating the house, and taming various animals with the music mini game was fun. The main thing that stops me from giving it a thumbs up is that ultimately the story and, more importantly, the npcs were just not very interesting to me. I more or less stopped bothering with the social aspect towards the end.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really want to like this game, I've had it since kickstarter. It just has terrible pacing and npc schedules. Everything feels very artificially time gated. The game is just... boring. This is my favorite genre, but not this one.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have played a ton of farming sim games and Roots of Pacha stands out as unique! Which is hard to do! The mini games and mechanics are refreshing, the story line engaging, and the gameplay manages not to feel exceedingly repetitive.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do you love Stardew Valley? Are you looking for a game with a similar vibe? Look no further! I have been an avid lover of Stardew for awhile now but I was looking for a new game to start up. This one was talked about on a Reddit thread and was on sale so I thought "Why not?" I am so glad I did! This one seems to have more animal interaction so far but the same base kinda idea as Stardew. It is utterly enjoyable to explore the various areas as they open up, discover new animals which you can breed, and gather seeds for vegetables and fruit which you domesticate over time. The different characters and tribes are mostly well written and have their own personality with some of them having more depth than others. Building friendship with the locals,…
