I was really hyped for this game but fell for it like a sucker. A warning to all prospective buyers, the author does not respect the player's agency, and the story of this game is as linear as can be. Any individual player choices in regards to dialogue are window-dressing at best, and very little of your choices actually even matter. Still with me, mister Harrow? Firstly, it's not Disco Elysium; it has little in common with it. It's focused on dialogue, and that's it. Secondly, it's not a bad game, as some people say, nor is it a good game. There are no RPG elements, no progression, no fancy hats, no Frittte (three "T"s!) plastic bag for collecting bottles, and you can't even stick a finger up your arse. But... It's a great story. 66% of the 268 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Rue Valley. The complaint that keeps coming up: choices do not affect the story. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

Critics, per Wikipedia

The PC version of Rue Valley received "mixed or average reviews" according to the review aggregation website Metacritic. Fellow review aggregator OpenCritic assessed that the game received fair approval, being recommended by 39% of critics. A review in Console Creatures praised the game's writing, time loop mechanics and graphics, although it noted performance issues on Steam Deck. Maddi Chilton in PC Gamer notes the similarities between Rue Valley and Disco Elysium and describes as an "extremely effective metaphor" the time loop as manifestation of depression and surreal happenings as literalization of mental state, but felt that the game failed in its execution and felt that the loop…

A beautiful, stylish game that starts as a 10/10 mystery but ends as a 4/10 linear disappointment that doesn't respect your time or your choices. The Good: * The art style is fantastic. * The story's initial setup is incredibly intriguing and pulls you in immediately. * While the voice acting is high-quality, it's jarringly inconsistent. Significant chunks of dialogue are suddenly unvoiced, even for main characters who are otherwise fully voiced. The Bad: * DOESN'T RESPECT YOUR TIME. This…

This game presents you with many choices, but all of them fail to progress the story except the one the writers deemed correct. There are no choices that lead to different outcomes, even superficially. And when you at least try to do something different, you’re forced to watch long travel animations in every single loop. In the end, this game succeeded in making me feel like I was stuck in a time loop without any free will, but that was not a fun or rewarding experience.

When I was ten hours into the game, I was willing to give it a glowing review, and I was puzzled by its mixed reception. Two days later, and I get it. Rue Valley is an adventure game which evokes Disco Elysium in presenting a story in a small town, accompanied by an inner monologue speaking to 'you' and a set of eclectic character traits that you select. Where traditional RPGs have you select a trait for 'strength' or 'magic', here you must select negative personality traits. The unique…

I arrogantly thought "Some reviewers are definitely younger people with lower attention spans, I, being the sophisticated and patient person I am, will sure like this slow burn game!" but no, they were all correct... This was probably the most frustrating and disappointing experience I’ve had in a long time. This game REALLY needed whatever the equivalent of an editor is in game development. About 30-40% of it needed to be scrapped. That is not an exaggeration. There is a period in this game where you are forced to watch the main character walk for 3 minutes with no interaction whatsoever. There is a sequence where you spend minutes at a time watching a sunset that you cannot see due to the isometric…

I played the game start to finish and I don't think I can recomend this game. This review is mostly for people who see this game and think it will be like disco elysium. The beginning to middle of the game was really fun. There were so many places to go, so many things to do, so much to uncover. But at one point the game just railroads you. You have no choice but to do what it says, and there's no more side tasks to complete, not that there were many in the first place. I didn't feel…

Games need to stop advertising themselves as “choices matter” simply because there are choices in them. The choices in this game are arbitrary and do not result in any real effects other than minor bits of flavor text. Simply put, they don’t *matter*. Some would argue the same for a game like Disco Elysium, but Disco Elysium has much, much more depth and reactivity to it. The writing is okay. It’s not bad but it’s not great. The dialogue tree is surprisingly limited. The art is beautiful…

Probably the biggest problem with Rue Valley is how it was marketed as “a game in the spirit of Disco Elysium”. In reality, the two have little in common. Rue Valley doesn’t have the same depth, the same defiantly strange setting, or the same humour. It isn’t even an RPG. Does that make Rue Valley a bad game? Not at all. It’s a solid adventure with a peculiar plot, likeable characters, and well-executed psychotherapy sessions. The game treats therapy and psychological hang-ups with striking…

Rue Valley is a narrative-driven, Disco Elysium-inspired mystery game with very light RPG elements. If you love a good, intriguing mystery where your choices have consequences, you will enjoy this game. However, if reading a lot while playing isn’t your thing, this game might not be for you. The gameplay revolves around exploring, talking to characters, and completing Intentions (essentially quests) to learn more about people and events through the Mind Map (think Sherlock Holmes games), with…

What was the point? I spent countless cycles in Rue Valley. I learned its layout, its timings and its workings. I learned about its people, its history and its misteries. The one thing I didn't learn is why. Why did I learn all that if by the end it was all meaningless. The people of rue valley, except like 3 of them, have nothing to do with you or the loop, and you (because of the nature of the loop) can have nothing to do with them. Why do I have a separate "mind palace" for my…

This game's reception was hurt significantly by comparisons to Disco Elysium, which is undoubtedly a source of inspiration. Also, expectations were high since Owlcat Games were the publisher, they themselves boasting a stellar reputation among cRPG fans. This is the first time I’ve written a review on Steam, but I have to warn other people. First, your build, traits, and stats don’t matter. They have no effect and carry no consequences. Second, your choices don’t matter — most of the time, there’s only ONE option to click. Third, the Willpower system is annoying. Gaining Willpower is a painfully slow process. Fourth, the story is disappointing, and the ending will betray you.

I do think a lot of the initial backlash that Rue Valley recieved was due to the comparisons to Disco Elysium, where it falls well behind in any category you care to name (except for having a time loop, score one for Rue Valley there) But putting that aside and taking it as a point and click game, rather than an RPG (the stats are truly not relevant, aside from the insight they display when you get to see another persons stats impacting how they interact with the world) it's... alright.…

I finished Rue Valley with mixed feelings. It started off strong with its time-loop concept, and the Thought Cabinet is clearly heavily inspired by Disco Elysium. Unfortunately, that's where most of the positives end. The writing felt dull and rarely managed to keep me engaged. Linear, non-timeloop puzzles, no exploration, no choices, no RPG, wastes your time, shallow characters & unfinished story Sadly I can't recommend it. Not for this price, not with the state of QOL and resolution of the story. Gameplay It's EXTREMELY linear and has basically no choices and no role-play, which is really at odds with a time-loop game. First of all, it’s not a Disco Elysium, and that’s good. (Actually, stop looking for "Disco Elysium", it’s time to admit the fact that disco is dead and it won’t come back, sadly) I didn’t want to play the second DE, instead I was given an entirely different, complete and highly emotional story that resonated with me, unfortunately or fortunately:( Maybe the game needs to be polished here and there, but I liked it, I had fun. So yeah, I recommended it.

First things, first this isn't in a great state. A lot of the of the lines aren't voices, other's writing doesn't match the voice acting, and I ran into one that is even voiced twice. If you're interested in this game it might do you well to wait for a patch to fix some of these issues if that's the kind of thing that bothers you. I played this game mostly in one session right when it came out I noticed on their site they claimed 20+ hours of game play which doesn't seem quite right to me…

Sorry to devs. You can tell this game had higher ambitions that were cut short for whatever reasons. I was all in at the start. When the illusion of choice was still strong. I must have been going with the devs on some choices. But as it went on, the cracks started to show. Stuff like after a some loops I wanted to try getting "tipsy" again, it was no longer an option. Thinking you had heard a solution, like hearing how to unlock the bike and it being meaningless etc. There is no real…

So let me get to this game's two chief problems, before I get around to why i'm recommending it, anyway. First, in advance of its release, many referred to this as an RPG. IT IS NOT. This is an old school point and click adventure game, that just happens to use an isometric perspective, found in many CRPGs. While you do do a kind of stat allotment, there is no advancement system of any kind. You're simply defining personality traits for your character. Second, it was cited that Disco…

An interesting premise, some heavy themes, and cool visuals. The game starts of well, but the time-loop mechanic quickly becomes a drag. After the first couple of hours, you're no longer exploring and there's no experimentation - you're simply doing whatever the next objective is and resetting, with lots of running, walking and driving scenes in between. The game stops being fun, which unfortunately starts to detract from the generally good story, and the last few hours felt like a slog to just…

It ain’t disco, and it ain’t an RPG, but it’s a nice little narrative adventure with likeable characters and a beautiful art style. You can have a couple of good evenings with it.

I can see why so many people hate this game with a passion. The majority of the games mechanics is pure fumble play. You fumble and stumble until something happens and pretend that the game makes sense. It doesn't. Everything bottlenecks repeatedly through inobvious scenarios that made sense to the designers but clearly not to a large majoirty of the players. Hence the frustration and poor review scores. The game is dialogue heavy, and pointlessly so. The reason I clocked 19 plus hours is that…

As many others, I came here looking for a "spiritual successor to Disco Elysium", and as someone who genuinely enjoyed absorbing the writing of that game I ended up not being able to last more than an hour and a half in this one I then promptly forgot about this game, and honestly would have completely forgotten to even write a review, if a demo for yet another “spiritual successor to Disco Elysium” hadn’t recently been dropped. I even had to spend some time remembering the name of this game…

I'm really torn whether to recommend this. This is one game where I really wish Steam had a so-so rating. There are certainly things to like about this game. It's pretty, The characters are good and the narration can be quite witty. The first hours are very strong. Unfortunately, once you pass the point of no return at Kay's Ranch, the game becomes a graphic novel. You lose the multiple avenues of investigation to be railroaded into a set path, and there are stretches of the game that barely…

Disco Elysium meets Palm Springs with some added mental wellness hang-ups. Seriously, the writing here really nails it on the head. This is exactly the kind of output I was hoping for in a post-Disco Elysium world. Not just aping the original, but still maintaining that magical realism vibe, with a fun sense of humor.

I've been waiting for this game since the demo became available! I was eager to see how the story unfolds - I haven't finished it yet, but for sure, I can say that it meets my expectations. That is a story with deep narrative and well-designed reactivity. And a remarkable chargen system! You can determine mr. Harrow's personality and the selected features really matter. He will act according to what you selected. When I played the demo, he was super shy and it was a challenge for him even to…

This "would recommend" comes because I think this game contains many incredible elements: some of the characters are incredibly well fleshed out (I could really feel the dynamics of a real family between Maxine, Alex and Walter) , the writing surprised me in some points for its poignancy and quality, the premise of the time loop is definitely tickling my brain in the right spot, but above all the visual style: that feels absolutely elevated while delivering everything it has to bring to the…

I like this game a lot. But you should know a few things going in. It is a narrative heavy time loop game. Although there are many things you can do In whatever order you like, there are certain gameplay mechanics in place that result in an overall linear experience. How it works is you gain inspiration from talking or interacting with people, and you can use this inspiration to unlock ideas that open new dialog and interaction options. I actually really like this a lot and it helped the game…

Yes, Rue Valley is NOT Disco Elysium. And YES, Rue Valley is a good game. I spent 100+ loops in Rue Valley, got bugged/stuck after 2/3 of the walkthrough, and I’m still waiting for help from 'Discussions'... And I liked this game! Yep, I do. TL;DR The game is good Most negative reviews are from Disco Elysium fans Ads in 2025 brought it too many players from other genres If you ever had long-term depression, then you will understand the game better The reason why Rue Valley is getting so many…

I was pleasantly surprised by this game. After reading too many negative comments about it, I was expecting to be somewhat disappointed. But I had really liked playing the demo, so I decided to give the game a try during a sale. And I actually really enjoyed it! I got completely engrossed in the explorative gameplay. And I quite liked the game humor and aesthetic. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3785632428 I don't understand why the game has been compared to Disco…

It seems many people have shared the same experience as I have with this game. Chiefly, that it plays moreso as a point-and-click visual novel rather than the 'Disco Elysium' style RPG it marketed itself as. This would not be an issue (other than some dashed expectations) if the narrative was more effective. A linear narrative, as this amounts to, should be less prone to the forgivable issues that can occur in branching narrative RPGs, yet 'Rue Valley' stumbles into the flaws of amateur RPG…
