Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 186 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (4,026 of 5,117 positive).
Many players see Sailing Era as a true spiritual successor to the Uncharted Waters series. [1][2][3] Some reviewers praise the trading, exploration, and RPG elements as addictive and rewarding. [4][5][6] Several players criticize the game for poor translation, unbalanced systems, and a lack of polish. [7][8][9]

It's not *bad*. Visually it's quite impressive. Technically it has no issues. I just find myself unchallenged and unstimulated. The world doesn't evolve over time, it's very static. As a result, there's no real challenge to anything, you just move goods around and watch numbers go up. A milk run you find early in the game will exist for as long as you're willing to do it. Compare port royale or patrician, where a …

The only regret I have with this game is not knowing it existed until October 2024! I am well over 100 hours into this game and it is a masterpiece in it's own ways! If you are a SNES/Genesis JRPG Elder-kin (lol) like me, you probably enjoyed KOEI games such as Uncharted Waters and Uncharted Waters: New Horizons! Well, I do pull UW:NH out every few years to scratch the itch, because, other than some untranslated UW …

This is, in effect, the true sequel to the Uncharted Waters series. A very, very precise homage, and much more playable than Uncharted Waters Online or Uncharted Waters Origin since there are neither the P2W elements nor the massive time-wasting elements of MMOs in general. If you are one of us fans who have been waiting decades for a true sequel only to be met with humongous disappointment time and again by Koei, …

This is a wonderful 'successor' to (UW2) uncharted waters 2 and the later online mmo type clones that came later. Has the usual features of ship combat and port investing, though lack the political / economic features of other older games. Note on port investing to newbies - you need at least 10000 invested into a section of a port example market or tech before the tech will start deducting the money - if you invest …

what a hidden gem game! if you like sea trading, battle pirates, building ships, this is your game! sailing era is anime version of tradewinds (old pc game) and port royale + some touch of 'Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes'. you can recruit 'real' life character in the game. not only trading goods and battle, the main selling point of this game is exploration. you can explore many laces (ports) all over the (real) …

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are many reviews stating both the positives and negatives of this game, so I won't delve into them here. However, this review may help you understand why there are so many negative reviews in Chinese language, which may impact the perceived quality of this game. Many Chinese players have had the opportunity to experience Uncharted Waters 2, 3, and 4 due to the availability of Chinese language versions, unlike English-speaking players who have typically only experienced Uncharted Waters…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not recommended despite my fondness for the genre. I have some experience in similar games such as Uncharted Waters (the MMO) and Sea dogs 2 (A.K.A Pirates of the Caribbean) and other trade games (Eve online, Anno Series, etc.). Due to my time with these games I've managed to identify the shortcomings of Sailing Era, notably: Trade: The game offers a trading system that is affected by regional preferences and a dynamic prosperity / depression system for towns. This is intended to simulate a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An excellent but flawed call back to Uncharted Waters If i wasn't craving for that itch to be scratched i would've definitively dropped the game due to some of its absurd design decisions, let's start with those first and finish with positives Cons : The supply system is badly balanced, logically you shouldn't be maxing out your crew capacity if you plan for long voyage or trading since you'll need more supply to feed everyone and split your cargo capacity between space dedicated to said…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wouldn't recommend Sailing Era. I had hoped that this game might offer a similar experience to 'Uncharted Waters' on my SNES console—an experience that balanced a love of discovery with a need for more traditional 'adventure' mechanics. But that didn't happen. In Uncharted Waters, every call to a port mattered. It felt like you were a humble captain carving out a place for your name in a huge world. The game had a measured tempo but made it worthwhile to experience it directly—you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am a terrible merchant captain but I am having a lot of fun! If you are ancient like me and can remember Pirates! this game has a lot of that flavor but also character stories, sort of stat raiser/rpg style. The art is charming. The translation is... not perfect but honestly I think it adds to the charm personally. A definite worthy buy.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish I could give this one a 'neutral'. A neat game that suffers from lack of polish and very rough tutorialization & English localization. If you like seafaring adventure games like Pirates with a bunch of story elements (including many little mini-stories along the way) and don't mind reading guides to explain the piles of mechanics barely covered by poor English localization, this game is fun. I didn't play it as long as listed (was idle), but could complete one character's story in…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an unfortunate downvote. The gameplay is honestly pretty good. But looking at the game initially, what sold me was the idea of the story. The story and characters are just shallow though. It's not bad necessarily, just bland and uninteresting. So I very quickly lost interest after realizing just how little characterization NPCs and sailors get. If that doesn't matter to you though, I would still give the game a try as the gameplay itself is solid, but for people hoping for a good story,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sid Meiers Pirates! meets JRPG, instead of just sailing the Carribbean during the golden age of piracy. You sail the world during the age of exploration with a group of distinct characters all with different ambitions, crew and skills. Throw a little more world building into the mix , instead of sailing to a far flung monastery and moving population around or overthrowing a governor , you start a guild and invest in the port of your choice. The more you invest, the bigger the port becomes,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So, you *can* get softlocked by the bad way this game handles pirate ambushes. If one triggers right as you're leaving a town, and you saved in that town, there's nothing you can do to prevent the ambush. And your autosave is usually going to be pretty close to caught up with your normal save, so if you did anything meaningful in that town they're probably both synched up. Even doing inland expeditions, if the town has that option, to progress time doesn't break the softlock. Add this to a lot…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pirates was my childhood gaming love and Sailing Era is the first game that matches and even surpasses that old sweet experience. Vast (well, whole) world full things to do - trading, building fleet and crew, developing ports and above all exploring full of possible discoveries and secrets is wonderous fun. Sewn together by stories of protagonists, recruitable crewmates (with distinct personalities and abilities) or places. World here is a living place full of possibilities of which almost all…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm not sure where this sudden uptick of negative reviews, but this really is a refreshing game. It's about the Age of Sail, not Piracy in the Caribbean as some reviewers have asserted. It's a spoof on Uncharted Waters 2: New Horizon and takes most of it's inspiration from there. It's a decent modern adaptation of it without having to play the lousy MMOs that KOEI seems poised to do with that series from this point. It's not perfect, but it is fun, rewarding, and there is plenty to do for…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you like sailing games, it's worth its price. It's a fairly basic game in the style of Uncharted Waters, with real time ship combat and a robust trading system. Despite there being a large open world with nothing keeping you from immediately sailing off to trade or battle indefinitely, there is a story with multiple chapters, and a **large** amount of content is gated by this story. So yes, sandbox, but if you want to be able to auto-sail? You're going to need to unlock maps which you do…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Love the premise, and the first couple of hours were really interesting. But a lot of the other negative reviews are right. This game is not properly fleshed out, nor was it properly play-tested. It is very janky and feels quite hollow, unfortunately. The bad translation is honestly the least of its worries. When I spend 2-3 hours on 4 or 5 quests, and 12+ hours on just ONE quest, there is a serious issue with pacing. The fact that this game's "random encounters" are unavoidable means that you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sailing Era is a good game. Marginally superior to the old Uncharted Waters, which you wouldn't think would be saying much considering UW is three decades old, and yet UW 1&2 are basically the high water mark for games in this genre with everything since having been a weak attempt at imitation at best. Sailing Era is the first game, in spite of its occasional translation errors, that I would say firmly replicates and builds upon the old formula, even if only just. Well worth my time thus far.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its like the old SNES game uncharted waters, same concepts and feeling. awesome game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is the Trading/Sailing game I've been looking to play for the past few years. Then on top of that you get to add in some serious RPG flavor. It feels a bit like Suikoden with all the unique characters you get to recruit.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A special kind of Game for s special kind of person. Easy to play but difficult to master in one playthrough so be ready for the learning curve. The problem is that you won't know there is one until pirates and missions decide to give you a weggie for not poneying up the lunch money. Negitives out of the way, Sailing Era is a great game. It's well thought out, plays well, and can really eat away at the clock if you let it. The stories are decent, if a little bland but your not really buying…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Quite the hidden gem this game is. Its very addicting once you get into it, I will admit it took me some time to get involved due to other games but once I gave it a full chance it won me over. Lots of quality things in it from the art styles to land battles. Pros: - Amazing art styles - Very optimized - Sail around the world - Treasure, shipwrecks to exploring new areas - Crafting system, want a new boat? Craft a random one with random mats - Land exploration - Find new heroes…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a port. Like all ports I've ever encountered, it's poorly done. The controls weren't rebuilt from the ground up for PC, just adapted. The game often will have forced dialog that you can't interrupt to save or whatever, you just need to keep clicking through for however long it takes...sometimes with more forced dialog to follow. Very annoying, terrible design decisions. Otherwise the game seems alright, and even fun, but the nuisances are adding up quickly.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My thoughts on the game: * Grindy * Menu heavy * Text heavy But I enjoy it! If you're on the fence and the above things don't deter you, then go ahead and pull the trigger. The trading & exploration is real addictive and each Main Character is unique enough to make each playthrough feel different. 8 out of 10 for me.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So I almost 100%ed this game, but have a few things left to do This is the Uncharted Waters we needed for years Great mix of story and action, great exploration targets, lots of things to do and no gatcha mechanics like the in UW Origins Best alternative we have right now The only issue that's still there are occasional bugs and a few memory leaks on Steam Deck But other than that, definitely amazing
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Spiritual successor to Uncharted Waters, but much better. It has a bit of an Octopath Traveler vibe. The translation is rough in parts, but never a showstopper. Combat is a bit simplistic but functional. This definitely scratch that exploration/discovery itch I've had since Horizon's Gate!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is one part Spice & Wolf and one part Sid Meier's Pirates! - A+
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →40/100 - The thieves of Alibaba are after your money To be fair, I was hoping for a chill naval trading & sailing game, something akin to Ports of Call but more historical. So maybe my expectations were set wrong, as this game is more like Pirates. But it's Pirates- the cheap Temu knockoff version. Like in Pirates, you go about building a fleet, exploring the seas and the wilderness, trading and doing battle. The land exploration bits are actually better than in Pirates, but everything…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A light, causal sailing/trading/cannon-firing game, with anime-style protagonists and story elements that give the play-through some direction, but has longevity through light story-telling, quests, rpg character building, and exploration. There are four characters to choose a game with, each of with has their own starting location and story. I have only completed the Portuguese play-through. It has been very exploration focused, having me map the four corners or Africa, find hidden European…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A game where you are able to host a fleet and to bring it to different cities, it does sound good and innovative to begin with. But the longer I played it, I couldn't bear myself to give a good review. The flaws is quite severe compared to many other games. 1) Guild is quite of a hit and miss, and for me, its really a huge miss. There is no option to remotely invest in guilds, so you have to go back to the port every single time the funds run out. I can arrange fleets to travel from another…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Better than Port Royale. A bit grindy at times. English translation could be better, but you do get the meaning, although some mistakes are very obvious. 7/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of that game I've been waiting for; a spiritual successor of Uncharted Waters series. There are many of them in the series though I only played Uncharted Waters: New Horizons and since then has become my favorite game ever. Sailing Era looks really like a remake so comparison is inevitable. In short, good remake but lacks the very basic of what makes games of this genre appealing: trading ports to ports . In Sailing Era, you can buy certain port (region) specialty products,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Reminiscence of Uncharted Waters series with its own flavor and many improvement added in. Very addictive, buyer beware.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR: The english translation is just too poorly made. To make it worse, I don't know if it's even worse than I think, or if there are problems with game itself. Two people talking about seeing no pirates as I just got jumped by two ships (there is even one in the middle of the screen between the two characters talking). The two characters are telling one another "hey, no pirates here" as they get interjected by the pirate who's already there, and they are still talking about no pirates on…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They took the idea of Sid Meier's Pirates and made it a lot bigger. There's some things I wish were in the game from that, but the game is well worth a play.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am 1 hour into this game. I grew up on worst gamest than this on Coleco Vision, NES, SNES consoles ... and a lot of bad games on PC. You name a bad game there's a good chance I gave it a fair try. I played the original Uncharted Waters and all of the Koei games I could get my hands on for the first 18 years of my life. I really did enjoy all of them. On paper this game has all the right "vibes" of those weirdly complicated (and often frustrating) games I used to (and still do) enjoy ! But in…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty good managment game, story is basic, exploration is core of this game. fighting and land exploration are alright, but RNG is a ♥♥♥♥♥ when it comes to ship parts.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've been looking around for a game that's similar to Sid Meier's Pirates- either the 2004 3D version, or the older NES version. It's a niche that seems to be impossible for developers to fully replicate. There's an avalanche of "Unity Asset" SM: Pirates clones on Steam, and all of them are half-baked slop. This game is much more of an Uncharted Waters game than a Sid Meier's Pirates game, but it's close enough for me. It has the real-time ship combat of Sid Meier's Pirates (a bit more…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Translation screams low quality with typos, errors and random punctuation.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →inconsistent systems make a great looking game awful to play. the tutorials are bad or non existent. example starter Q: bring 25 wine from A to B. get to A, buy 8 wine (the max for your little ship), go to B. cant deliver needs 25 at once. adjust cargo space (after googling how to do that), max space is 12. cannot complete Q, FAIL correct answer? go to A, go to the tavern for Q and the game temporarily and magically adjusts the ship size to 25 and gives you the Q items, then you can go to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Having played the Andrew questline most of the day today, here is my impressions so far. The art and music is good. The actual native language dialogue spoken by the NPCs in the various ports is also a very nice touch. I feel like there are a lot of cool things to find, and interesting (if somewhat cliche) quests to complete. However, I am finding the combat incredibly wonky and tedious. The controls are akin to the old Uncharted Waters Online where you basically dogfight in the water and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like this game. I think this could be better than Uncharted Waters from Koei. I have finished all main storylines including the DLC. There are many side quests and discoveries to do other than the main storyline. Even barmaids have quests. It is a bit grindy as first, but auto sailing will help speed up the travel between cities and regions. There are about 30 characters that could join the main characters on the voyage. There are a lot of ships you can use either by building them…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Someone said it is Sid Meier's Pirate game with JPRG story. It is, but with better gameplay, trading with less effort for minor calculations, better UI & graphic (of course), and more immense story with more accurate on historical. This is what I was looking for years, this is my favorite open world sailing game for me now.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best games
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fun game that helps capture the nostalgia of classic titles of Uncharted. I hope they keep putting more into this game as its a bunch of fun as it is. Explore, Trade, and Pirate your way across the seas. Go on expeditions and build a trading empire. Story elements are in the game for characters and you can recruit special characters to fill out your ship. This is a strong game to pick up and play!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Basically a love letter to Uncharted Waters 4, from what I've read (US only had 1 & 2, plus an MMO & FTP). Glad this was made, I had always wished for more, and then find out there were like 4 more that never got released in the US. This was an excellent game, could've used a couple of QoL improvements, but by and large, I loved it (270+ hours).
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is great if you want something quiet and you like simulation or city builder style games. You get to customizer your fleet and build a merchant empire from scratch which is pretty cool. Only thing i can really say that's negative is it takes AWHILE for you to make much progress from discoveries.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Uncharted Waters Successor
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I find this game extremely fun, yes there is quite a bit of jank but honestly the rest of the game is so good that I find it very easy to look past its shortcomings. If you're willing to put up with an iffy translation, with a lot of softlocking bugs and with obtuse and somewhat poorly explained systems this game is a unique gem, I heartily recommend it. Solid 8/10 my grandma beats me
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very good game, reminds me of Uncharted Water a lot
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hidden gem 8/10 scratches that itch Tradewinds left behind all those years ago. immersive and relaxing but with caveats : naval combat meh under explained mechanics no baby/casual mode for lil bro who just wants to trade If pirates didn't port camp I'd say they add a one life/hardcore mode
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played this game and thank god I got it on sale because I think I would've been really mad if I didn't. I was excited at the concept but the game wasn't at all what I'd thought based off the information on the store page. Additionally, it's kinda confusing. I even had it on novice mode or whatever but nothing is explained well enough in terms of stuff like where you're going or how long it'll take to do tasks or how much you need in rations to actually GET to a target when you're exploring.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played off of Steam for maybe anopther 15 or so hours. This game is unique, has both a great story and great mechanics, and is super fun to play, with super cute art. It satisfied both the simulation/management, RPG/storyline and "caravan" (boats here) trading game vibes. One more super cool game that comes from China, I'm happy to see so many nice and original games coming from there. One of my favourite games this year.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Long overdue endorsement of an awesome gem of a game! It's super pleasant game that's an improvement on the Sid Meier's Pirates! formula, with actual storyline (different for each main character), tons of unique characters and events. Great variety of activities to pursue: from trading, trade guild expansion, collecting ships to exploration, inland expeditions and all shades of ship combat, like pirate hunting or becoming one. You can assemble quite a crew of varied characters - each with…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For those who loved the good old Uncharted Waters, I highly recommend this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →when KOEI didn't want to translate their latest UW games, this is where Sailing Era comes and take their market. It felt like a spiritual successor to UW series.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If an indie game could do for Uncharted Waters what Stardew Valley did for Harvest Moon, it would be one of the greatest indie games of all time. Does Sailing Era rise to that occasion? It is difficult to say, because I'm pretty sure you have to play the game in Chinese to see it at its best. I also have no idea if Bilibili is a scrappy indie team or a gigantic media syndicate. I'm just kidding! I know it is a gigantic media syndicate. But even in English, I like Sailing Era a lot.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Briefly, if you're like me and looking for something to scratch that Sid Meier's Pirates! itch, this is it, and it does it so well. I am barely over 10 hours in my first playthrough and I already love this game, It's pretty much what I expected and then some more. You can choose between 4 starting characters, each driving you towards a certain playstyle. I chose Andrew as my first because he seemed to be the basic guy, focused on exploration, starts in Portugal and so on. Again, 10 hours in…
