What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 169 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (2,999 of 3,363 positive).
Players praise the unique blend of tower defense and first-person shooting. [1][2][3] Some find the game repetitive and shallow, especially compared to its sequel. [4][5][6]

Meh, it hasn't aged well for me. I used to like this game back in the day, but I feel like its surprisingly shallow gameplay wise. Just build towers along an enemies path, and unload your weapons into them as fast as you can. I normally like the challenge of playing games like this on the highest difficulty, its fun to figure out a strategy through trial and error. Unfortunately this game takes the route of just …

Some pretty weird decisions makes this a somewhat unique tower defense game, for better or for worse. For instance, the levels are very lenghty, and some of them have up to 30 waves. Although there are checkpoints every few waves, this is one of those FPS/TD hybrids, so you can't just build your maze and afk, because the game expects you to do the heavy lifting with your weapons; meaning, you'll have to babysit them …

I bought this when it first came out back when I was in college. Almost two decades later, it still holds up when I came back to 100% it. A novel tower defense that prioritizes tile placement over just about everything else, making this one of the more balanced in the genre, with multiple meta loadouts. If you choose to buy this game in 2025, turn off steam overlay. Some weird bug crashed my system with it on.

Pretty good. This is a Tower Defense game with FPS action. The graphics are decent. The music is irrelevant. No story here but your own. No bugs or crashes. Overall, entertaining. There are several maps and it is long enough for the price. Of course, get the DLCs. It can get a bit repetitive regarding the enemies, the towers, and the weapons since they are mostly the same all the time. The only variant is the map, …

neutral · AI labelView post →I really really want to love sanctum, I really like the idea here and part of the execution, it just... Doesn't work? I'd fully recommend picking up this game, both titles are cheap to pick up with a lot of content, although it is very much something to turn your brain off to which I think is not something anyone would want with a tower defense game. Sanctums biggest problem is just how much the game drives itself, there aren't really variables to worry about, nothing interesting to try or…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sanctum is a slightly aged 3D FPS Tower Defense set in a vague Sci-Fi setting with a quirky main character armed to the teeth with guns that handle like trash! Now first some minor corvid lore.. I love a good old tower defense and have probably spent more time than I want to admit in the custom map section of old Warcraft 3 hammering on with Elements TD and its ilks so I actually thought I'd like Sanctum, at least in theory. The fact is that this is a mixed bag for me, and for many…

negative · AI labelView post →I missed the hype when this came out but I can see it. Would even be dope to revive.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't like Tower Defense games usually. This one is done with a FPS perspective and handheld guns so you can focus on that aspect if you like. To that end, you choose 3 guns you start with, and they can be upgraded many levels, and there are blocks that increase your damage if you shoot through them. These pair with regular tower defense bits, like tiles that slow enemies or make them take additional damage. I only played 1 game with a co-op buddy, and we beat it, had an okay time, but…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This seems kinda tough but here are some games that come to mind: **Slay the Spire 2** - 1-4 player co-op - main gameplay is turn-based tcg-like deck builder (in multiplayer, turns are simultaneous but teamwork works best when you slow down and don’t all go at once) - plot gets unlocked bit by bit mainly through achievements, which don’t always come from winning a run - Strong class identities, and this is built on in multiplayer. You form your build from cards and items drafted from random…

neutral · AI labelView post →You could give Sanctum and Sanctum 2 a try. They are “FPS Tower Defense” games where after the tower building phase you go in and blast the enemies by hand alongside the towers. The FPS combat is not particularly hard because it is still a tower defense at its core, but there are some enemies that are easier to kill by hand than with towers because they have armor and take much more damage at their weakpoints and the towers aren’t very good at aiming at the weakpoints. Also there are some…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When it was new it was good. It has however age poorly. It was always rough around the edges and some may like that, but I do not. Sanctum 2 however still holds up to this day. I would recommend skipping this game and getting the sequel instead. This one just feels a bit unfinished and therefore too hard, and I say that after having 100% completed Sanctum 2. There's always Super Sanctum TD.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly, probably one of my favorite games. Bought it years ago because it was a dollar and I thought I'd give it a chance. Ended up becoming one of my go to for "quick" plays. A classic in all sense of the word. I'm also in the rare camp that I like this game more than its sequel, but I need time to put in it. Every time I try, I just go back to this, and the cycle continues.
