Critics, per Wikipedia
Saving Private Ryan received critical acclaim, and audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A" on an A+ to F scale. Critics generally agreed that Saving Private Ryan presented the grim and brutal reality of the "Good War" in a way previously unseen on film. Writing for the Los Angeles Times, Kenneth Turan described the film as darker and more pessimistic than any of Spielberg's previous works, dispelling the mythos of WWII as staunchly good heroes fighting against evil forces, to depict the reality of combat where, "American soldiers mock virtue and shoot surrendering Germans, where decent and altruistic actions tend to be fatal, where death is random, stupid and…

positive · AI labelView post →I respect Steven Spielberg for never explaining why Matt Damon turns into an old man at the end of Saving Private Ryan. An odd note of magical realism in an otherwise straightforward film!
neutral · AI labelView post →Re: Tom Stoppard - I know that most everyone feels that SAVING PRIVATE RYAN was robbed of an Oscar by SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE. You can think what you like; I’m not a fan of this debate in general, and I’m a Spielberg guy. But dismissing SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE is wrong. It’s a great movie.
neutral · AI labelView post →Movies in which many lives and/or great fortunes are risked/lost to BRING MATT DAMON HOME: • Saving Private Ryan (1998) • The Martian (2015) • The Odyssey (2006) Movie in which both lives and fortunes are (secretly) threatened *by* Matt Damon to bring Matt Damon home: • Interstellar (2014)

neutral · AI labelView post →Shakespeare in Love is a considerably better film than Saving Private Ryan.
negative · AI labelView post →My hottest movie take remains that Shakespeare in Love is a much better film than Saving Private Ryan

Sparked conversation with MAGA hat guy at kid’s game by asking which side he rooted for in the movie “Saving Private Ryan.” 3. Ordered Canada shirts 4. Cheered Canada’s hockey team 4. Wiped my butt clean after every Elon I took all week 5. FDJT

neutral · AI labelView post →reading the François Truffaut quote about how there's no such thing as an anti-war movie, and this has led me back to a vague notion I now think I can stand behind: I don't think Saving Private Ryan is an intentionally fascist movie but it's absolutely a fascist movie nonetheless
negative · AI labelView post →Saving Private Ryan took home most of the accolades in 1998, but Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line is the superior film about war. Malick made a haunting meditation on humanity itself.
negative · AI labelView post →Very sorry to hear about Tom Stoppard. He was easily the most brilliant conservative artist alive yesterday; I can’t imagine his equal. He complicated my ideas about politics. Arcadia and Travesties are perfect and Shakespeare in Love is still a better movie than Saving Private Ryan.
negative · AI labelView post →“Plot armor” is one of the dumbest critical buzz phrases. “Why doesn’t the central character of the movie die 50% of the way into it? Plot armor!” It’s like asking why SAVING PRIVATE RYAN wasn’t about one of the guys killed on the beach. If they’re dead, there’s no story to follow

positive · AI labelView post →Had to mention I was a film historian on Threads because a post went viral & dudes thought they were introducing me to an obscure film I'd never heard of called Saving Private Ryan. It's like saying High & Low is my favorite Kurosawa & then being told by 25 guys to watch Seven Samurai.

neutral · AI labelView post →Most people believe the actors improvised the opening scene in Saving Private Ryan but movie buffs like me know that's not fully accurate. Yes, the dialogue was improvised (as it is in most films) but much of the action was likely pre-planned with some actors even being told beforehand what to do.
neutral · AI labelView post →I suspect theres a cultural milieu within DHS/CBP/ICE that’s informed by this movie the same way Black Hawk Down, Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, and Generation kill influenced my generation during the GWOT.
neutral · AI labelView post →In much the same way that the Riddler saying "What's up guys" in The Batman made the movie 20% better all by itself, the guy's wife answering his question about whether or not he's had a good life at the end of Saving Private Ryan makes the movie 20% worse.
neutral · AI labelView post →Rewatching Saving Private Ryan and as always struck by the thought that after Grandad George and fellow Royal Marines got back from Normandy he and his brothers made the papers for the reverse story told in the film: all five of them made it home alive from different Theatres of War. Inconceivable.

neutral · AI labelView post →Watching Saving Private Ryan again tonight. After all these years, it's still the most realistic war movie ever made. The beach landing is unmatched. All CGI has done is made movies worse and unrealistic.
positive · AI labelView post →SAVING PRIVATE RYAN isn't a great film but the first half hour is the best war movie anyone will ever make. I saw it when it came out, I knew a lot about D-Day. I was almost physically sick.
neutral · AI labelView post →Speaking of movies… What’s the most hyped movie to you that everyone said was great but once you watched it was trash? For me: Titanic and Saving Private Ryan
negative · AI labelView post →I wouldn't count Casablanca or Bridge, tbh, both films set during war but not war films, if you get me? Off the top of my head, Come and See, Dunkirk, Saving Private Ryan, Das Boot, Zulu. Maaaaybe Battle of Algiers (great film, not sure if it counts)

To put it into US terms, it is basically a French "Saving Private Ryan": a rousing, patriotic WWII summer blockbuster (of dubious historical accuracy). www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXRf...

neutral · AI labelView post →Decided to watch Saving Private Ryan for the Nth time. I can be contrarian sometimes but there is nothing to be said about this movie. It is a story perfectly told in film.
positive · AI labelView post →In the film "Saving Private Ryan", around 1h30 of the film, the soldiers are in a field where we can see tansies, flowers which bloom around August, and also dry thistles, proof that we are end of August. However, the Normandy landings took place at the beginning of June. Credit to Louis Schmit
neutral · AI labelView post →That’s how the Rangers in the book described the people they were fighting. They called them “skinnies.” I don’t know if that was a stylistic choice. The movie and book weren’t a 1 to 1. It came right after “Saving Private Ryan,” so I feel like the director was trying to do that, but in a proto-GWOT

neutral · AI labelView post →Saving Private Ryan was the first R-rated film that I ever saw in a theater. Its first 15 minutes are among the most intense moments in cinema history — loud, violent, chaotic. And I’ll never forget the person with a screaming baby who left midway through it all.

neutral · AI labelView post →I thought about this around the time of Saving Private Ryan and Thin Red Line. The latter is the first “anti war” film where I didn’t get a visceral rush from the action scenes. They just made me sad.
positive · AI labelView post →Saving Private Ryan, a widely misunderstood film, deserved Best Picture over Shakespeare in Love, and maybe even The Thin Red Line
positive · AI labelView post →For “the #1 movie when you were 10 years old is how 2026 will go,” Titanic might have been the highest grossing film of 1998 but it was released in 1997 so therefore it doesn’t count. The actual answer is- *checks IMDB* Saving Private Ryan. Ope. Welp. Fuck.
