Was kinda liking the game at first until I realized the devs went with a soulslike kinda progression and combat, with annoying bosses that require split second timing and some spongy enemies. It's a linear shooter which is fine but when you add in save points that respawn all enemies with the souls like progression it just feels terrible. They should've just made this a straightshot third person cover shooter …

Scars Above is a AA game that doesn’t have to blush when compared to many AAA titles, even though it is much much shorter, the experience it delivers is almost flawless and offers one of the best representations of a hostile environment I've experienced. This game is a solid experience if you're looking for a fairly linear game with an alright sci-fi setting. Game itself felt like it had potential with some of the early mechanics it introduced, which were never brought up again. Interesting map biomes, though the enemy variety is lackluster. It is very easy to 100%, and even the game's hardest difficulty can be a cake walk. That being said, don't expect anything …

Critics, per Wikipedia

Scars Above received mixed reviews on Metacritic. IGN said it "shows a lot of potential" but the overpowered weaponry and gadgets cause it to become boring. NME praised its Soulslike combat but said the exploration and puzzles were at times confusing. Hardcore Gamer called it "almost aggressively unoriginal" that "rarely, if ever, takes any sort of risks". Push Square praised what they felt was a likeable protagonist and interesting premise, but they disliked the animations, combat, variation among enemies, and environmental design.

A Solid Sci-Fi Ride Worth One Playthrough Scars Above is a perfectly decent sci-fi action-adventure that doesn't try to reinvent the wheel, and that's fine. You play as Dr. Kate Ward, an astrobiologist stranded on a hostile alien planet, fighting to survive and uncover the mystery of a strange monolith. The story is serviceable, the visuals are solid, and the atmosphere delivers enough mystery to keep you pushing forward. The combat is functional, a mix of shooting, elemental weapons, and…

Wanted to like this game. I liked the premise and I liked the setting. Good scifi with a interesting time jumps and monsters. But why did the developers decided to make this weird pseudo-soulslike angle on it? It just does not work. The game is very linear which can be good for a cinematic experience like this. But slap on top of it the souls-like formula of respawning enemies and combat that relies on spongy encounters and weapons that either shoot to slow (fire), do little damage outside of…

The only reason why I would suggest to play this, is that you would get a likely accurate idea of how the first AA game entirely developed by AI would look like. I don't like reviewing negatively games if I can help it, and usually I just prefer to leave it, but I was so unimpressed by this one that I feel like I should leave one - sorry. The biggest issue with this game - among the many - is that there isn't a singular original idea. Everything has already been seen a hundred times and…

Don't get me wrong with this negative review. The game is okay-ish and not too bad, it has interesting element mechanic which makes the player play with variety of weapons at some points and it is satisfying to take down big enemies using their weakness, but it gets repetitive and boring fast. The game's length is okay-ish, story wise, eh, it was okay.. However, the main characters are all so ugly, especially the protagonist, and no the female does not have to be hypersexualized, but the…

A rather frustrating game that had sooo much potential. The person responsible for respawning all enemies that were killed every time you save should be fired and never had a place in making games due to serious lack of critical thinking.

This is one of those games where I wish there was a middle ground between a positive and negative review. Because while this game is certainly no masterpiece, it also isn't *bad*. Let's start with the negatives. -Scars Above runs on the Unreal Engine, so it looks great, the character models and animations haven't gotten that memo tho. The lip movements don't sync up either. -The stamina bar also appears outside of combat, which gets annoying during long stretches of exploration. -The…

Honestly, it's not bad. I wanted to recommend this game, especially after looking at the developer's past work. Most of their games are point-and-click, but this one feels like a big step forward. It has fun and engaging enemies and boss fights, as well as a decently interesting story. One negative thing I want to point out is the horrible pre-rendered cutscenes that are everywhere in this game, which is unfortunate. It reminds me of one of those weird Xbox 360 games they don't make anymore. If…

Since it is autosave and there isn't a certain location you can save, you say OK, it seems like there isn't one nearby, I am gonna go back and save it because it took me 10 mins to kill this guy... HELLO! The boss and all other mobs you just killed respawns EVERY SINGLE TIME if you leave the area. I don't understand this player punishment fetish. If you like so, here is your punishment with a negative review. I will give it another shot another time.

I don't know if the Developers will ever read this but it's important. Guys, sometimes you just want to play a game to get out of your head and lose yourself. I realize that it's unpopular but as an older adult that works long hours, I don't want to come home and play a difficult game and if the game is so difficult that you can't gain any headway in the easiest setting, it's not me, it's you. I've played shooters since they first came out, so you can't blame me. So after I was killed at the…

Nice shooting mechanics, nice story, it kept me on the edge the whole game. The moving, shooting, dodging etc. are a bit clunky though. But what I like the most is that you can reset your ability points anytime you want, how many times you want. There's no limit for that. So you can play around with different builds until you find the one that's right for you. But in the end you will have unlocked all of them anyway.

decent enough game, but i can't in good faith say that it's at all worth it, especially for the original $30 price. the story was pretty okay at best, downright boring at worst. the only "difficult" boss fights have stupid gimmicks (and they're pretty much a joke after you figure it out). imo the most egregious thing was that my playthrough that almost 100%'d the game took me around 8 hours. that is not NEARLY long enough to justify the price (and it also hurts the already pretty weak story).…

One of the jankiest, clunkiest games I've come across. The concept of needing to swap through weapons to hit specific parts of mobs with specific elements along with the terrible roll in this game just makes it frustrating and boring to play. The concepts are interesting but the delivery and smoothness of them is just not done well at all.

TLDR; I bought this for $3 and it was worth every penny. I would say $10 would be the most I would pay now, $20 would have been okay at launch. ~6 hours to complete the game. Story was fine, nothing crazy. Graphics and animations were good. Combat is fun, but enemies are REALLY repetitive. Puzzles are mid. Cutscene animations were just silly - the characters facial expressions don't match the voice acting or the scenario at all. I didn't encounter any of the issues others were seeing…

If you hold for too long the charge realese itself, if you let it go in the last second like they want you to, it simply won't reconize wich mouse button you released first and just disarm the character... leaving you to get some hits.. your life is smaller than the dev's pennis and unlike his mothers hole the area where you are suppose to keep dodging from giant attacks…

It's short but good. At first it feels like a souls-like shooter, but later you discover more weapons and perks to progress easily. I really enjoyed this short game. Scars Above is quite compressed in terms of content, but at the same time it won't annoy you much during the playthrough. Combat is really smooth, movement is responsive, and you can combine elements from the weapons to kill vulnerable enemies. Achievements are also extremely easy to complete - you simply play the game and 99% of…

This game is solid! The biggest compliments i can give this game is that, if you took the movies Oblivion and Prometheus, and the games Returnal and Metroid, and they made a baby, it would be this game. Its not a roguelike, and not a Metroidvania, its a liniar Scifi story. If a modder can swapped out the main character for Samus from Metroid, you can pass this game as a liniar Metroid game (someone make it happen) Rating: 9 out of 10 As a SciFi nerd who doesnt like soulslike games, im…

We have Mass Effect at home. But seriously the amount of ripping this does from Mass Effect is shameless - the graphical design, the ship, the music. I should have written more down as I was playing because the story is wack and so is the gameplay. I don't know if I was doing it wrong or what but I found 'the alpha' boss to be unreasonably difficult with unintuitive dodge rolling and insanely tight timing and when I finally beat it the gui bugged out and I had to restart the game, so I quit…

I tried brothers, but i just couldnt get into it. This is obviously their first attempt at an action game and it shows. They did a mostly good job of it, however the whole soulslike combat and "bonfire" mechanic just don't fit. Especially when story beats are just repeated again and again if you do die and have to go through them again. I see potential in these guys, and i do hope they learn from the mistakes in this one. Jank is fine, but mashed together mechanics aren't.

Scars Above is a science-fiction third-person action-adventure shooter developed by Mad Head Games and published by Prime Matter. I'll probably finish it, cause the game is pretty short anyway, but I hardly get any fun from Scars Above. I've been lured by the souls-like tag, have barely read any reviews, and these were my grave mistakes. This is NOT a souls-like game - it's just a mediocre third-person shooter on rails that emphasizes its weak story over gameplay. Surprisingly good for what it's worth. Given the lack of sci-fi games nowadays, definitely a must play if you like settings like this one. Combat mechanics might seem a bit janky and too basic at first, but once you unlock more weapons and abilities, the gameplay actually becomes fun. really didnt enjoy this , straight at the start it has you doing meaningless tasks and assembling items on a bench - not fun , then the movement which would feel clunky in 2008 - not fun , the graphics are a weird mix with some scenes looking genuinely fantastic but some feeling disjointed with a mish mash of art style, the combat - im not sure the souls like playstyle fits with the story and visuals- neatly avoiding every shot just doesnt make you feel like a bad ass. i dont hate the game but…

F... this game, what a piece of ♥♥♥♥. Soulslike wannabe that gives you extremely slow combat with limited ammo,(you have basically around 30 ammo rounds and need constantly pick up "ammo flowers"), boring bosses with absurd amount of life and fire weapon that needs to charge up which makes it completely useless against agressive enemies. It literally lies to you about weak points on enemies(or they're bugged). It has ♥♥♥♥♥♥ level up system where your kills doesn't matter( you need to find exp…

For this game I wish Steam had a button for mix ratting, that is where it hinges. So, the core combat mechanic is the shooting, in my opinion this is also its biggest strength but weakness too. To keep it brief, you get to use 4 weapons each with a different element, from electric to fire to ice and finally to toxic. Throughout the game you will meet enemies which has one of those weaknesses (imagine bosses with weakpoints, with the added factor that you need the right weapon for those…

Scars Above has okayish graphics and the character models are wooden, with stiff animations. The controls are clunky and combat is pretty janky. The voice acting is flat, without emotion, and amateurish. There's just nothing at all that makes me care to finish this game. No good story, not good game mechanics, lacking in enemy variety and boring characters. Not recommended

Fantastic example of a solid AA game. We need more like it. It has linear levels, basic elemental color-coordination combat, and a story that's intriguing yet ultimately serviceable - but it just works. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. I was rapt the entire time I played, and I'm genuinely excited to see what the devs have in store for us next.

A hidden gem that punches above its weight!! I picked this up during a Steam sale and honestly it took me by surprise. For a game developed by a smaller studio, the level of finesse and brilliant game design is impressive. While it's a shorter experience it's incredibly rewarding. The linear structure makes it an easy pick up and play title without unnecessary bloat. While the character movement feels a bit quirky at first, you quickly get into a flow where everything just clicks. Combat is a…

An underdeveloped game with unrealized potential, laziness, wokeness, and a lot of missed opportunities. Q: Would I recommend? A: Wait until it's around 90% discounted and then try. Other than that, no, don't bother. [+] 1) Somewhat thoughtful weapon types and gadgets 2) Easy to use UI and controls [-] 1) Woke 2) Underdeveloped 3) Ugly characters 4) ♥♥♥♥♥♥ pants All characters butts, especially that alien, look like they had a big dump in their pants. 5) Performance all over the place I was…

Scars Above is a solid, above-average game with a lot of potential for a sequel. The visuals are one of its strongest aspects, offering detailed environments and a good overall atmosphere. The story is slightly above average—engaging enough, though not particularly groundbreaking. However, the game is held back by repetitive and recycled enemies, which make combat feel less varied over time. Additionally, the item that slows enemies is overpowered and removes much of the challenge, making the…

lil janky, lil stinky, lil cheap/amateur feeling, lil generic, but pretty fun nonetheless. Got it for $5, can't complain

I don't know if I trust the studio behind Scars Above to deliver with this, but the Saber money should help. Super happy it's a single-player game and not yet another asymmetrical MP title as many theorized. www.youtube.com/watch?v=R88Q...

Game 65: Scars Above. It's a Soulslike but a sci fi one and really good. Felt like it had Resident Evil vibes with the horror and Mass Effect vibes with sci fi The story is great and the gameplay was fun, the final boss is a bit lackluster but im happy to have played it 9/10

terrible. dont buy this ♥♥♥♥. Remnant 2 did it way better (though very lackluster story) but the fact that this game has been out for 3 years and they still havent fixed the bug that softlocks you is insane. the mature cryobug needs 4 scans. the mandibles are supposed to be one of the four. i scanned it a hundred times and stayed at 3/4. i died and tried again, same ♥♥♥♥. i bought it for the pirce of a coffee but im still going to refund. i dont care how little the money is, if the devloper is…

This game was a poisitive surprise. The world was a little meh - although I did enjoy the non-hostile creatures roaming about - and I had some issues with controls - probably mostly my fault - but the story and overall message really got to me. There were some great lines in there that hit hard, and the general message of the game in regards to AI and machines and genesplising were a breath of fresh air compared to some other games out there using the same format.

We finished Scars Above today. Honestly about a 5/10 for the game overall. the lore was about a 7/10. There was a lot of room for improvement with the game that disappointed me but still had fun listening to the lore they built. Raided @umbralpyro.bsky.social whos live rn playing mtg!

Good narrative driven experience similar to games like Revenant, if a little short. The game is linear with set maps. No procedural generation, no exploration. There's no replayability because of this, but for what it is, it was good. Maybe tuned a bit too easy. On the middle of the three difficulties I died probably around 10 times in total, most of it in the first half of the game when I was getting used to things. I rarely used any gadgets or consumables beyond the shield and the heal. There…
