Self Reliance
Directed by Jake Johnson
When a man is offered a million dollars to play a game in which hunters try to kill him, he thinks he has found the perfect loophole: they can only attack when he’s alone. His only problem is that none of his friends or family believe the game is real. Forced to seek companionship in unexpected places, he navigates the bizarre challenge with humor, paranoia, and a surprising search for connection. From TMDB

60 of 72 · most liked firstSELF RELIANCE REVIEW -- a fun and weird little movie that stars Jake Johnson and Anna Kendrick and has a bunch of Palm Springs-y energy -- Biff Wiff (ITYSL) and Boban Marjanović (76ers) show up, which was nice -- i have no clue what happened but i think that's okay(?) three out of four Wine Keanus
positive · AI labelView post →Checked out Jake Johnson's SELF RELIANCE in its one-night theater run, and was pleasantly surprised. It's a much smaller film than I was expecting, more PALM SPRINGS than THE GAME, but that's because it's consistently, consciously steering away from obvious expectations. It's on Hulu next week.
positive · AI labelView post →hmmmm just watched Self Reliance, the "Nick from New Girl" vehicle, and it was a perfectly decent goofy Sunday night film but also it was so close to actually being properly fun? just needed a little bit more? I was left both entertained yet frustrated?
neutral · AI labelView post →Second up in my Jake Johnson double bill is Self Reliance, which is a far more interesting and disturbing film than the premise suggests (man is offered 1 million dollars if he can stay alive while people try to hunt him.) Highly recommended. letterboxd.com/marie_philli...
positive · AI labelView post →RIP Biff Wiff. Great character actor who showed up in B99, ITYSL, and more. Especially awesome in the 2023 movie SELF RELIANCE. So it goes.
neutral · AI labelView post →My husband thinks that there's some unwritten law, that once a movie is started, it must be finished. No matter how crappy that movie is 😒 Right now that movie is Self Reliance.. And it sucks 😕
negative · AI labelView post →30. Self Reliance (2023) I like the concept, I like the performances, I like the big swing...but I never bought in to the incredibly high stakes. Halfway through I just wasn't fussed, sorry movie.
neutral · AI labelView post →RIP king. a role I want to highlight is Jake Johnson’s Self Reliance (on hulu), an uneven movie that nonetheless he absolutely shines in
neutral · AI labelView post →1974 film by Augsburg College for the City of Minneapolis, made with NEA money. Much of it about the Loring Park area, but also about Hennepin Ave and downtown west generally. Is producer/co-director David Morris the same one as David Morris of Institute for Local Self Reliance?

neutral · AI labelView post →We're on the back half of our double feature about people agreeing to be hunted by assassins. This week, we're on Jake Johnson's amiable comedy SELF RELIANCE, a different vibe from the stylish, ennui-laced 1965 film THE 10TH VICTIM, but with some clear parallels. cms.megaphone.fm/channel/FLM2...
neutral · AI labelView post →We watched Self Reliance last night. A bizarre and weirdly charming film written, directed and starring Jake Johnson with a really strong cast. Worth checking out on Netflix. Might not be everyone's cup of tea but I really enjoyed it.

neutral · AI labelView post →Watched Jake Johnson's movie SELF-RELIANCE this weekend, and I'm fascinated by the choice to make a film about a man trying to convince his family that he is being stalked 24/7 by unseen assassins without anyone uttering the words "psychosis," "schizophrenia," or even "mental illness,"

neutral · AI labelView post →With The Running Man movie coming out, I recommend the low-budget, indie take with a related premise I saw the other night: Self Reliance. www.imdb.com/title/tt2608... Great fun, great cast: Jake Johnson, Andy Samberg, Anna Kendrick, Natalie Morales...
neutral · AI labelView post →Watching SELF RELIANCE with a poorly Marnie, who is off school. It's a fun film.
positive · AI labelView post →This is a short film on Holland, MI’s visionary broadband work I did with Chis Mitchell and the folks at the Institute for Local Self Reliance. It’s about broadband as community information utility and infrastructure. Check it out youtu.be/ZX5AUok50OQ
neutral · AI labelView post →Damn. He was also fantastic in the otherwise meh Jake Johnson movie Self Reliance.
neutral · AI labelView post →We just watched Self Reliance by, and starring, People Magazine’s (secret) Sexiest Man Alive Jake Johnson. A weird, quiet, delight of a film that refused to conform to expectations.
positive · AI labelView post →Just watched “Self Reliance” (Johnson, 2023), and though I’ve always liked Jake Johnson, this film missed the comedic mark. 🫤 But I do hope he continues to create!

neutral · AI labelView post →Jake Johnson’s directorial debut has some interesting concepts, but doesn’t go far enough exploring them. Plus Anna Kendrick is severely underused. My review of SELF RELIANCE. macguff.in/film-reviews... @seattlecritics.bsky.social #Filmsky

neutral · AI labelView post →saw Self-Reliance, the Jake Johnson directed movie, had a good time! the best part is Biff Wiff is secretly the second biggest role in the movie more than anyone else.
positive · AI labelView post →If you haven't seen Self-Reliance, he has a pretry big role in that movie and is great.
neutral · AI labelView post →37. Self Reliance (Netflix, 2023 - Jake Johnson) I wanted something light but not too dumb. This has a cast of much loved character actors and Johnson playing basically Nick Miller again in his own self-directed / written movie, a COVID allegory maybe? 1/2
neutral · AI labelView post →Self Reliance is a perfectly fine 5/10 movie which ends up being 3/10 because of the piss poor ending. I was rooting for you, movie!

neutral · AI labelView post →Lmao this shit reminds me of that random ass movie on Hulu “Self Reliance” for some reason 😂😭

positive · AI labelView post →I got trailered again My ★★ review of Self Reliance on Letterboxd boxd.it/67z0g5
negative · AI labelView post →Last night R and I watched Self Reliance on Hulu. I like Jake Johnson so was pretty excited. It was…fine. Moderately funny, but the plot kinda jumped around and I didn’t get the full “nick miller” experience I wanted. I give it 3 of 5 burp cloths Tonight’s movie: Alien. Never seen it! 👽
neutral · AI labelView post →Tigerland is a solid Vietnam boot camp movie & young Colin Farrell does his thing. saw someone refer to it as “Half Metal Jacket” and that felt pretty accurate lol. Self Reliance was just ok but if you like Jack Johnson (I do) you’ll definitely have a good time. #lastfourwatched #letterboxdfriday
neutral · AI labelView post →Watched Self-Reliance on Hulu Cute movie. Tldr: Jake Johnson has to avoid people trying to kill him for 30 days to get a million dollars It's less actiony and more a comedy It's a good popcorn movie
positive · AI labelView post →With Jake Johnson's directorial debut 'Self Reliance' premiering on Hulu this week, I looked back at his formative collaborations with director Joe Swanberg.
neutral · AI labelView post →I'd like to nominate Self Reliance (2024) as a possibility, though that could be more of just a relationship movie

neutral · AI labelView post →Just randomly watched Self Reliance (2023), really weird movie, but I liked most of it. At least there weren't skybeams or anything like that.
positive · AI labelView post →As well as being a stand out in I Think You Should Leave, Bill Wiff was also fantastic in the criminally under appreciated film Self Reliance. Go watch that.
neutral · AI labelView post →Film no. 26: Self Reliance (2024, 🇺🇸) dir. Jake Johnson
neutral · AI labelView post →Self Reliance Pretty funny movie, I like how you can see the slow descent into madness It did feel like it kinda fell off towards the end a bit and was all over the place in a lot of ways but solid watch overall 7/10
positive · AI labelView post →Self Reliance is finally on Netflix! This film is a ton of fun! Tons of funny performances and real fun plot!
positive · AI labelView post →Film watching has been all over the map this week: - Tenet - Self Reliance - Jupiter Ascending - The Darjeeling Ltd. All but Tenet were great and/or great fun due to space rollerblades/opportunities to make dog-fucking jokes.

neutral · AI labelView post →Self Reliance is a wild movie. All the jeans in it look weird.
neutral · AI labelView post →#6 - Self Reliance When Jake Johnson is on screen, this movie is kind of fun. When Anna Kendrick shows up, I almost fall asleep cause their dynamic in the movie is just boring. The premise feels like missed potential. I wish this movie was just funnier and better written.
negative · AI labelView post →I did quite like the premiss here, but the joke really did start to wear a bit thin after half an hour. "Tommy" (Jake Johnson) is invited to a secret meeting with two men who offer him the chance of winning $1 million if only he can survive a deadly game for a month. In order to take the prize, he must find a way to stay alive for whilst various hunters try to kill him. His only guarantee of safety is not a church, but being in the close presence of someone else. Innocent civilians are his…

neutral · AI labelView post →The thing that ended up selling me on Self Reliance is that the basic premise of film is absolutely a situation Nick Miller would find himself in.
neutral · AI labelView post →I watched "Self-Reliance" tonight, definitely a processing quarantine emotions film but quite delightful. I do wonder if it'd have been better if it had gone full bore with a dark twist in the style of Observe and Report though.
positive · AI labelView post →@tasharobinson.bsky.social just watched The 10th Victim for @thenextpictureshow.bsky.social and LOVED it, what an incredible film and great pairing with Self Reliance! Love your podcast for bubbling up gems like this

The #schittscreek actress stars in Jake Johnson's new film, Self Reliance, but we also get to talk about plans to reboot Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. At Consequence or wherever you get podcasts.
neutral · AI labelView post →So to that end don't watch Self Reliance until he's back xD Very fun movie that just came out but definitely falls into the "need to sleep around people, don't be alone" category
neutral · AI labelView post →Self Reliance is a very funny riff on “The Running Man” and “The Truman Show”, and it’s also Jake Johnson’s directorial debut! An extremely funny and absurd movie, it moved along at a good pace and has some really standout moments. Definitely recommend giving it a shot.
