Snake Pass
Developer Sumo Digital
Snake Pass is a puzzle-platform game developed and published by Sumo Digital for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. Players play as a snake traversing floating islands in themed levels. Despite being a platform game, the player cannot jump and has to slither similarly to a real snake. What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 177 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (2,675 of 3,350 positive).
Players praise the unique snake-based movement and physics, calling it a refreshing take on platformers. [1][2][3] Many find the controls challenging and frustrating, especially when trying to coil or climb. [4][5][6] The game is recommended for those seeking something different, but not for casual players. [7][8][9]

Not Worth the Frustration - 3/10 I wanted to like Snake Pass, but the controls turned it into an absolute nightmare. You're constantly juggling multiple buttons just to make basic movements – forward, grip, lift tail, camera control – it's like trying to pat your head and rub your stomach while doing calculus. What looks cute and simple quickly becomes exhausting. The "thinking like a snake" gimmick sounds clever …

flawed in a few ways, with somewhat forgettable music, repetitive environment design and an uninspired background story, but man i ADORE this game. the platforming was so alien that i gave it up within an hour when i originally got it 5 years ago. but MAN is it satisfying to twist and clench around poles to get absolutely meaningless collectables. i legitimately had sweaty palms getting the no death achievement at …

GOOD Points: 1.Unique and Refreshing Gameplay🐍 Snake Pass delivers a one-of-a-kind platforming experience by making you control a snake in a truly snakelike way. Instead of traditional jumping mechanics, you slither, coil, and grip your way through levels, making movement both challenging and rewarding. 2.Beautiful and Vibrant World 🌿 The game’s visuals are stunning, with bright, colorful environments that feel …

interesting idea for sure. It's like a 3D platformer but without the jumping part, instead you're a snake that can only slither around. The controls take a while getting used to. Not really my cup of tea so I won't be playing much more but if you're looking for something fresh this game might do the trick.

A truly refreshing platforming experience. Instead of always being surrounded by snakes in the grass, I get to play as one.

80% of the 177 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Snake Pass. The complaint that keeps coming up: controls are difficult and frustrating to master. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Snake Pass received mixed reviews according to review aggregator website Metacritic. Many reviewers praised the uniqueness of the movement, but cited a steep learning curve and gameplay or technical frustrations that brought the game's quality down. IGN's Jose Otero praised the movement and overall gameplay of the game, but criticized the camera and checkpoint system. Both Nintendo World Report's Casey Gibson and Nintendo Life's Mitch Vogel praised the game's unique gameplay, but stated it had a steep learning curve in order to learn the unconventional controls. GameSpot's Oscar Dayus enjoyed the movement and visual design of the game, but criticized difficulty spikes in the middle of the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fantastic slow-paced platformer. I will say though, this game absolutely MUST be played on a controller, and I suspect many of the negative reviews were from people that attempted to play on mouse and keyboard. Having only the cardinal directions in a game where you're wrapping around circular poles is a recipe for frustration.

neutral · AI labelView post →Snake Pass - kinda became a meme game very briefly for its wacky gameplay style. Unlike "intentionally frustrating" games like Getting Over It, it's just unique and actually fun to get the hang of. The chill Dave Wise soundtrack will keep you smiling even when you fall. +Noodle is the cutest

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can't recommend this because of the controls. This is not how a snake's body works. I was intrigued at first, after all, the premise sounds interesting, but it becomes frustrating quickly, especially when you want to collect all of the orbs and coins. Only the first third of the body actually helps you climb, and the rest is dead weight. It becomes particularly frustrating when you're trying to coil around a tube, only for your tail to go limp and drag you down into the abyss.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Snake Pass slithered onto Steam as an oddity in the modern gaming landscape — a physics-based puzzle platformer with no combat, no dialogue, and a central character who literally can’t jump. What sounds like a recipe for niche appeal has instead become a cult hit, thanks in large part to its unique gameplay mechanics and charming presentation. Snake Pass earns high marks for innovation and aesthetics, even as it stumbles occasionally under the weight of its own ambitious design. Gameplay:…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The main draw is the unusual controls - having to navigate the world as a snake instead of being able to simply walk forward. Unfortunately though, I would often know what I wanted to do, and be unable to execute it, because the snake slips. Which is odd. I'll be in a very secure position, but the snake's body is always sublty moving when he's holding on, as if he was slippery/slimy. So instead of being able to take things slow when you need to, there isn't a moment to even pause and breathe.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really cool concept that feels fresh for a puzzle platformer even though some of the camera work and terrain is abhorrent. Would I recommend it to someone who wants a tricky puzzler and enjoys learning through pain? Yes. Would I recommend it to the average player? Probably not unfortunately. I'd say if you can get it on sale it's worth giving a go but you'll probably rage quit at some point :) The Good: Compared to other people I didn't mind the controls if I'm honest. It did take a while…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're gonna have a game with silly controls, either make it funny like Octodad, or at least make it responsive and with fair checkpoint positioning. I ragequit the game after dying and have to re-do a section I had spent 15 minutes trying to beat. Looks good, but just isn't worth the price
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unique =/= Good Conceptually interesting. Execution not so entertaining. I like a good head scratching challenge but not when the challenge is trying to get the controls to do what you want. I want to relax and enjoy my games while I'm off work, not feel my stress and blood pressure increase. Also, not really any story or purpose to the levels, you just get through and collect with no incentive. This is more of a 'nothing else to play' kind of game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bad Controls and annoying levels. Just didn't enjoy it at all.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Years and years ago, Snake Pass on the Switch got an updated icon, going from this version to the one Jon posted earlier. It was generally considered unfavorable so they changed it back to this one later on.
neutral · AI labelView post →Before I bought it, I thought Snake Pass would be a game that I'd be preternaturally good at. But actually, the devs made the stages border on frustrating. Despite my every effort, snakes cannot fly. The only way I could #JustBeatIt was to ignore the optional pickups. @polykillpodcast.bsky.social

negative · AI labelView post →Unique game where you play as a snake called Noodle Once you understand the controls and movement, this is a very fun game Visually it looks very good and I quite liked the music I wouldn't mind a sequel for this game. If you like 3D platformers, I definitely recommend this game 10/10

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A 3D collectathon that feels like none other! I tell you, the programming behind this sleepy, slippery snake is masterful -- unlike anything I've seen before or since this game came out. Whatever movements you imagine a sentient cartoon snake pulling off, you can do it here, and you'll have to do it, all of it, to have a prayer of collecting the shiny whatsits. If you're reading this, you've probably long-since internalized the running, jumping, and momentum of a standard platformer -- so…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Snake Pass is a Very Unique Puzzle Platformer The Platformer is different since you're a Snake but it's fun. Puzzles are good but nothing too annoying. There is a lot of collectibles to collect and Time Trials for the Levels too. Overall it's a really fun Puzzle Platformer I enjoyed it I would give it an 8/10. If you're looking for something different give it a try.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very very conditional recommendation. The controls are snakey. The challenges are challenging. But... sometimes it feels like the snake just doesn't wind around things the way you would expect. Only recommended for people who like challenging controls of wiggling as well as repeating areas as you plummet off bamboo poles. Great art, great feeling of movement, solid music and sound. Longevity of play added thru collection of challengingly placed objects and timed speed runs. Otherwise expect a…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What a wonderful experience this game was. Calling Snake Passage a 3D platformer kinda undercuts how very different it feels from any other 3D platformer out there. It's a one of a kind expierence, which I can wholehearedtly recommend to anybody who's not afraid of trying out new mechanics. The controls are tight, although understanding how the snake moves warrants getting used to. The level design is great, and the coins and all the other things you can find throughout the levels never felt…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Snake Pass' unique controls and mechanics manage to create a methodical and slow approach to the 3D platformer genre with surprising success. The worlds are bright, vibrant and charming to be in. It wasn't engaging enough for me to make it to the end, but was plenty fun enough to recommend to anyone interested.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hard to control, but after you get used to it, it's quite fun.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gave this a try, did not enjoy it. The controls feel very ambiguous on what gripping/not gripping is going to do at any given time, having to weave back and forth instead of just pressing forward to move forward at a decent speed is also annoying and stressing my wrist even more than necessary, and I'm just a few stages in and some of the collectables already are super annoying to get to. Also, progress is only saved by check point and you'll have long sections of difficult collectables…

neutral · AI labelView post →I bought this game around the time it first released and ended up refunding it and since it's 80% off I'm finally leaving a review. The dev team barely patched the game at all and didn't act on any of the feedback from the community which is and was the main problem with the game. A lot of people will complain about the controls but the controls themselves aren't the core issue. Yes they are awkward and somewhat annoying but what detracts from the game more than the controls is how this means…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Long and short – but both head toward paradise's salvation Snake Pass is a really unusual physics-based platformer. You won’t be jumping or running in the way you’re used to. You control a duo: a snake (either a cobra or a python) and a tiny hummingbird. The story mostly takes a backseat, since all the attention is on the gameplay. The game has 15 levels, and in each one your goal is to collect three crystals (yellow, pink, and green) to unlock the portal to the next level. For those who…

Instead of relying on traditional jumping or sprinting, the game places players in control of a snake named Noodle, accompanied by his loyal hummingbird friend Doodle. This unusual protagonist requires players to master slithering, coiling, and climbing, creating a distinctive movement system that…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The best snake game ever made. I mean, you actually must use locomotion to move faster... brilliant. This is one of those games I can see myself playing for a long time, in short bursts, a "one run a day" kinda game. The challenge lies in your ability to use the physics of a snake to reach collectibles in hard-to-reach locations. It's also fun to say "I'm a sssssnakkkke" while you play. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Either the learning curve for movement is steep, or it's just difficult. Either way, eventually I hit a point in the game where level difficulty went way up, and retrying meant retrying from a bit too far back. It was simply not fun anymore, and it felt kind of... slow-paced even before that. The game definitely has its charm, and I applaud the developers for trying out something different. Perhaps if you're a better player at the game than I am, it might be fun for you, but it didn't end up…
