What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 238 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (11,632 of 13,586 positive).
Many players praise it as a worthy spiritual successor to Heroes of Might and Magic III, with innovative mechanics. [1][2][3] The pixel art and music are widely lauded as gorgeous and charming. [4][5][6] Some reviewers criticize the campaigns as linear, boring, or poorly written. [1][7][8]

the basegame is ok. the gameplay is ok as well, but nothing to be amazed about. the pixelart is stellar and the controller (steam deck) support is amazing! but, the writing of this game came of as really really bad and felt like it was either written by a child, some sociopath or a robot. there are massive battles where heaps of people are murdering each other, but after that the characters basically just say - and …

A beautiful game with an interesting spin on HoMM formula. There are several features that make Songs of Conquest feel fresh and in some ways better than Heroes 3. These are some of them: Each unit type has a qunatity limit preventing infamous doom stacks. All unit tiers are pretty rounded and it feels a lot more balanced compared to HoMM3. Magic system is very well designed. It requires smart army composition as …

TL;DR: This game is what happens when you have brilliant art direction but only a middling understanding of game design. It's the most borderline thumbs up I've ever given any title. I adore these kinds of games. I have been playing them since 1997. Let's go from the worst parts of this game to its best: The little shrines, dozens of them, sometimes a hundred of them, that dot the map, and give your commanders …

A true spiritual successor to Heroes of Might and Magic 3 for those of us who grew in the 90's. And even if you didn't this is a very good standalone game even without the nostalgia. I write this review after finishing the main campaign which I enjoyed very much. Most maps I've had to restart over at least once playing on challenging, but it never felt unfair. All of my failures were brought upon my poor gameplay, …

This is the worthy spiritual successor to Heroes of Might and Magic III, moreso than Olden Era, because it innovates in a compelling way instead of simply imitating and it also evokes a genuine feeling of a fantasy world. Initially, with only 4 factions, it felt like it lacked enough content, but now — with 6 factions and a 7th on the way — it's satisfying enough. I do wish the campaigns were better thought-out, as …

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to put some time into this game before leaving this review. It's clear that the developers put a fair amount of time and effort into this game and did their best. Regrettably, I feel that they came up short. I must preface, this game is very obviously inspired by King's Bounty and Heroes of Might and Magic. Ergo, I have no choice but to make comparisons. My first gripe is that the base game only has 4 factions, and still only 2 more with DLC. This is below par for the…

positive · AI labelView post →I never liked strategy games. They require thinking, and thinking is not exactly my strongest suit. Bought this game because the pixel art is gorgeous. The music is gorgeous. The fantasy atmosphere is gorgeous. My strategic abilities are not gorgeous. I tried to get into it like five times. Each attempt lasted about 20 minutes before I alt-tabbed to something shiny on YouTube. Then I got prescribed ADHD medication (Medikinet® CR 10 mg) and played for 6 hours straight. If (a) you played Heroes of Might and Magic and you got *really* into the pvp and wish the game was finer tuned for balance; This game was literally made for you. If (b) you played Heroes of Might and Magic and you enjoyed making busted builds, using crazy spells, and finding insane artifacts; This game is not for you. If (c) you haven't played Heroes of Might and Magic .....How did you get here?…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →5/10 I played on the third difficulty and dropped the game after ~2 hours. Coming from HoMM , this just feels like a weaker clone that made me appreciate the HoMM more. Combat is shallow, ranged units are overpowered, battles get repetitive, and the small battlefield doesn’t help. The UI is cluttered, building is unintuitive, and you often skip turns just to gather an army, which is poor design there are a lot of poor designs on the map and also battlefield building management and spells.

neutral · AI labelView post →The game really has to stand on its story, there are 1000000 might and magic clones, and this one didnt try very hard to be unique. Even the units are just straight up the exact same as every other clone. The factions all feel more or less the same, they have the exact same buildings and all more or less use light infantry, heavy infantry, elite infantry, ranged unit, cavalry/monster unit. They even share heroes that feel like they belong in another faction (and thats because they start in that…

I would not purchase Songs of Conquest first; play the generous demo of Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era. (As a side note, for a unit to interact with a settlement, the unit has to be at the entrance. I hope to save you a couple of minutes.) If you like Olden Era, consider Songs of Conquest; if you don't and are still interested in Fantasy strategy, try Age of Wonders 4, since it is the most polished and…

I played with a couple of tryhard dudes from the games official discord server to learn how the game works. Basically in a 1v1 you need to rush to the center town, the first one to get there wins. It might sound ok for most people, but I realised You dont get rewarded for any exploring you do. You just waltz to the center maximizing your macro, for…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's fine if you want a standard HoMMlike. This genre has been stagnated for almost 2 decades now. My preference was the Age of Wonders branch of HoMMlikes, but the latest entries are meh. Unfortunately SoC lacks Global/World magic which makes the overworld gameplay even less interesting. Played through one campaign. It entirely boils down to wandering around picking up loot, clearing stationary creeps, playing whack-a-mole with enemy armies popping out of the fog of war 1-2 turns from…

I spent a lot of time just zooming at the world map and looking at things, all of which are beautiful pixel art. Anyway, it's been going on sale and I figured folks in this community might appreciate it! Apologies if stuff like this isn't the idea of the sub but I wanted to share.

neutral · AI labelView post →Hear me well: Songs of Conquest is not a bad game by any mean. It has four factions to play with, thus four (although small or even tiny) campaigns, lots of items to equip your Wiedlers (ie Hero), and probably a lot of other things for it that I am forgotten. However, I cannot find it appealing. It is not even the super ugly end of combat zoom on already hyper pixelated sprites that I don't like. It is just that is it not fun, you don't want to do "just one more turn". I loved HOMM2 in its…

neutral · AI labelView post →Remains bad. The visuals and music are great, but the gameplay balance remains all over the place. The campaign designers think it's OK to let you meticulously work through a map, then flash-enter fully stacked armies five levels above you to curb stomp you without any foreshadowing, warning, preparation or obvious triggers. There's no warning that you're off curve, no way to catch up once they appear and the only way to proceed is rote memorization and cheesing the AI.

If you enjoy restarting a campaign for the fifth time after discovering all the curveballs the developers scripted into it, then writing down the “correct” order of events to cheese your way through, this might be for you. I rarely refund games, maybe once every hundred purchases or so, but this one is simply not for me. I was lured in by the recent “Very Positive” rating, but after playing it,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Campaigns are short and lack depth. Base game factions are basic and do not offer much variety in gameplay with higher tier units being expensive yet lacking impact. Having the developers push new DLC factions with any campaign for them severly limits the appeal to those playing single player. I cannot recommend... go grab Disciples (on GOG), or Age of Wonder if you want something with a bit more to it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great TBS (Turn Based Strategy) game. Very similar style to Heroes of Might and Magic II, III and V. Also somewhat similar to AoW (Age of Wonders) 2/SM, AoW 4, or the Disciples series. If you are unfamiliar with these type of games: They are basically part classic 2D RPG (lots of map exploration, obtaining treasure, and combats), part resource gathering, and part city/base building. The single player story scenarios ("Campaigns and Tales") tell some interesting stories, and at the end of…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is hard to recommend this game. It's a decent game with some beautiful art and lovely music and sound design. The creators also had several good ideas to make it an unique entry into the strategy genre and not just a HoMM clone. BUT! In their wisdom and enthusiasm for balance they forgot to make any of the factions cool. All of them (6 so far with DLCs) feel bland and uninspired. The unit rosters are so safe in their design that I feel like it almost doesn't matter what I pick. The…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If I could give a meh I would. The fact there is now a billion pieces of DLC doesn't surprise me - it was half-baked, eeking out some margin from DLC when it should have all shipped with the game. Short term maybe a win, long term all credibility lost. No Man's Sky proved that if you continue to deliver high value on the base game - people come back and more people buy.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is excellent, homage to HoMM and a unique interesting magic system. Learning the different factions and units is simple enough and it also has a fair amount of depth. You take command of a "Wielder", a magic user who imparts his strength to his troops and there is a pool selection of skills upon every level up I enjoyed my time so far and can highly recommend, the pixel art is gorgeous also, and the story campaigns are interesting
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a noob to strategy games this one is pretty easy to get a grip on. The art-style is charming and the mechanics are pretty easy to understand troughout the campaigns. Would recomend even for someone who hasnt played these types of games before.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Feels like you need to do a lot, to have no impact. despite loving the genre, this game just didn't give me any fun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think the game has potential, but my experience so far has been frustrating. In the campaign, as early as map #3, enemies attack from all sides, forcing the player to memorize attack patterns rather than react strategically. After inevitably failing and restarting the map, which is not enjoyable in itself, you still tend to get overwhelmed, as the enemy suddenly appears with a higher tier of units. At that point, success seems to depend on memorizing the exact build order, executing hero…

SoC, however, managed to succeed in being a fun experience for me. You command Wielders, heroes who lead your army into battle against opposing factions. Your Wielders can traverse the map, claiming settlements, resources, and points of interest in the hopes of building an army strong enough to defeat your enemies. Each Wielder has a Command skill that…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've not played Song of Silence, but from what I've heard it's closer to Total War then HoMM. You should try Songs of Conquest, which is heavily inspired by HoMM, with some more modern mechanics and QoL. I find it simpler than HoMM in general - might be a good intro into the genre. Also vanilla HoMM 3 is not really a great way to play the game these days. I'd say Horn of the Abyss is a must, and there are a ton of mods to improve the game. Have a look at the VCMI project if you want to dig…
positive · AI labelView post →I like the graphics andthe idea of city building. However, coming from HoMM3, I found the game very limiting for no reason. 1. Combat is extremely linear. There is no wait button. The mana system is never explain in the campaign. You cannot choose the direction of the attack, which can lead to creature blocking. I must say that there are some nice things about it as well. I really like the shooting mechanic. 2. The city building gives you an idea of freedom, but you are de facto forced into…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really enjoying what the game has to offer. It has enough going on not to be boring, but not so complex that I need to strain my tired mind to try to comprehend. I will be buying the DLC for this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a love letter to HoMM 3 from amazing developers. I don't want to waste your time reading the obvious things you can find in other reviews. What's worth to mention - Unit limits, and also stack limits, is one of THE best things about SoC in my opinion. I actually want and need multiple heroes, with their own armies, and that is FUN. No more stacks of death and hero mule conga lines. Damn guys, this game is really marvelous.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I recommend this game to all fans of the genre. It is a really cool project with very interesting and deep mechanics. What really hooked me: Building and Troop Selection. You can't just build everything here, which forces you to think and choose your buildings to fit a specific strategy, especially in the early game. Magic and Units. This is the coolest feature! Units directly influence the hero's magic (generating Essence). If you recruit one type of unit, you get access to certain spells;…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a fun little HOMM-style game, with enough of a unique spin to differentiate itself. Most reviewers will have already mentioned the city and magic systems, which are the main points of differentiation, but you also have a different set of factions/units. Some are familiar stock fantasy stuff, with knights and so on, but the reptile/lizard swamp faction lead by a kind of frog Moses is cool (DLC factions seem interesting as well), and upgraded units have unique abilities. I mainly…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a big fan of HoMM, I really tried to like this game. It didn't work out for me, purely for graphical reasons. It's hard to see objects laying around on the map due to color gamma and overall graphic's style. It could be the greatest HoMM-like game, but there is no deal for me if I'm not able to distinguish background decorations from actionable objects.

neutral · AI labelView post →I just don't enjoy it as much as Heroes of Might and Magic and too many core features I know and love are changed in Songs of Conquest, for the sake of being different, which unfortunately leaves me wanting something else when playing SoC. It's not bad, it just doesn't hit the same way, particularly the army size limits, magic system, and the way towns are built.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I would certainly recommend Songs of Conquest, but buyers beware. THIS IS NOT HEROES OF MIGHT AND MAGIC 3! It is recommended as being modern take on HoMM3, but at best it is heavily influenced by it. Many of the key features that make HoMM series so special is not present in Songs of Conquest at all. There are many things to like here. Magic system is overhauled and takes getting used to but evens the playing field. Pixel graphics are gorgeous, unit design is great, everything is beautiful.…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Faithful in many ways to HOMM 3, but I'm bouncing off. Movement feels clunky. Worst of all (and this is my own pet peeve) we have arrived at the old style pixel graphic has been overdone stage of modern gaming. What recently felt nostalgic and charming has become an excuse for lazy graphic design. Hard to see, un-delineated sprites on an equally muddy playing field. We don't need Baldur's Gate III, but please, can we move on from these blocky sprites?

Just jump into a 1v1 game against a bot and throw ♥♥♥♥ at a wall to see what sticks! I enjoy some of the tweaks to previous design like stack caps, welder (hero) caps, and how the "builds" you can make are quite distinctive. For anyone who is interested in the game mechanics, I suggest trying the higher difficulties as while they have many annoying aspects they do make you engage with…
