What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 188 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (259 of 411 positive).
Players find it a streamlined 4X fantasy game that is fun for a few playthroughs. [1][2][3] Some reviewers compare it unfavorably to its predecessor, Fallen Enchantress, calling it inferior. [4][5][6] Others appreciate the focused goal and improved graphics over earlier titles. [7][8][9]

This game is presented as the next game after the Fallen Enchantress series. However the game is very much inferior to Fallen Enchantress and far more simplistic. I don't really know why the developers chose to go a step backwards but this game is certainly not worth buying especially if you already have Fallen Enchantress.

TLDR: play Fallen Enchantress instead. I pressed thumbs down with a heavy heart. While the concept itself is great and game undergone very important modifications comparing to its predecessor it has one huge flaw: Every single session is always the same due to limitations placed by very rigid Sorcerer King mechanic. You have very strict pipeline how you should play the it and would be punished severely for trying …

This game is misjudged I think. It beats the Fallen Enchantress for me because: * The graphics are more pleasant and suitable for it's mood. Full of charm and little details that I really like. They hold up even today as they are in a style and not cutting edge. Performance is great with everything max. * The shape of the game isn't endless and unending. You have a goal- a large quest to do. Set about and accomplish …

World's "OK'est" game is probably how I'd describe this. It doesn't do anything particularly well, nor particularly bad. The production quality, graphics, sound, animations and depth of gameplay remind me of a mobile game and there isn't much here to last beyond one or two play throughs. Bugs show up, strange damage calculations and balance issues I can't quite figure out are prominent and there's an overall lack of …

Pretty interesting 4x. Good for a playthrough or two. The main game mechanic was pretty interesting as it was pretty narratively driven for a 4x. The positives were the hero questing, available heroes, and gearing and leveling individual units. The cons were that the gameplay can get repetitive, and the equipment management mindnumbingly tedious. I didn't run into any bugs or crashes. I'd give it a "Damn kids are …

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is essentially Fallen Enchantress: the Mobile App. Pretty colors, 75% of the prior game's features and depth removed. Many fewer units, and no ability to design your own. Many fewer buildings. Much small tech trees. Much smaller skill trees. A lot more randomness and less ability to design your own strategy. Oh, and multiple major bugs with core abilities. So bonus.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Seemed really good at the start, but it turns out the bad guy can just teleport ridiculous armies past your defenses directly to your capital every 10 turns or so. One of them had three leaders capable of stunning my entire army on a 5 turn cooldown or so, so they got four turns before my first turn, and could make me skip three turns again two turns later. They used those four turns to kill four of my named, unique, irreplaceable units and severely wound my front-lines (remember, this is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Go play Fallen Enchantress by the same company instead. The timer notion is an interesting idea but every game degenerates into a waiting game, submitting to the Sorcerer King until you are strong enough to at least not get wiped. Expanding in any way whether it be an Outpost or a new town, will attract his attention. Part of the problem is it is always you against him, there are only minor factions around and no other empire fighting with or against him. Unlike most other strategy games…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you are a fan of this kind of game (heroes of Might & Magic, Endless Legend,...), you might like it. The spirit & atmosphere of the game are actually really witty and pleasant. The mecanics are nice. It has everything to be a perfect masterpiece of the genre (exept a good, rich, soundtrack... but hey, be your own DJ! ;p ). But then, it's flawed, bugged, it crashes often... beware of reloading a savegame, you will probably have to reload the game... It's a beta version, stuff has not been…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to like this game but frankly it sucks. I like to expand across the map and make towns and such. No point in this game because every single thing you do to move forward only helps the other side. I even went so far as to get a trainer and try only to lose in turn 10 one time and 5 another. What fun is a game that you can't expand. I don't get why so many games these days are capping town numbers and expanding. I really wanted to like this game. I have over 500 games and frankly…

What do you get if you take one dose of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and mix it up with some more open world RPG elements and a slight dose of Civilization thrown in for a good measure? Well, I for one found the mix to sound quite awesome, and honestly this game comes quite close to being great, yet stumbles a bit on its execution..…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game doesn't fit in a particular category: It has obvious 4X roots, as it descends from Fallen Enchantress, but it doesn't feature your regular 4X opponents, as the other factions are more like minor allies for you or the Sorcerer King. The Sorcerer king, your nemesis, also doesn't follow 4X rules, as he will get armies and garrisons through events, and your reaction to these ones (or in reaction to you becoming too strong). The kingdom building is reduced to the minimum, and is mostly…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't bother with this and get Fallen Enchantress instead. This is basically an extremely watered down and unreasonably harder version of that game. Also if you're hoping that the technical problems would be fixed: They aren't.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For this #RandomGameSaturday I present to you Lupin the 3rd: Treasure of the Sorcerer King! Gotta appreciate anime games during the PS2 era. Game felt straight up like an actual episode from Lupin part II. This doubles as a Fujiko appreciate post BTW.
positive · AI labelView post →The Good Graphics. Artwork, graphics, and game effects are decently nice. The Sorcerer King. You often interact with the Sorcerer King, balancing your needs and his growing powers, and trying to undermind him at every step. This concept, while not as deep fully fleshed out as I would have liked, made the game more engaging. The Bad Slow gameplay. Per faction, there's only a handful of buildings and units to build, but all of it feels so slow and cumbersome to build. Bad exloration.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sorcerer king: Rivals is an interesting game as I have not played any of the other titles. However the NPC AI seems like they are brain dead... I watched one send fresh trained 30HP unit to attack a 400HP boss thats out side of their ZOC(Zone of control) while their ZOC is full of groups of bandits ranging from 46 - 100 HP armies. Then theres when you give them mana for example I gave the fire keepers 30magic(Most the list allowed) and they gave me a 15hp crab like unit that has 0dodge and…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was not paying the original sorcerer king, so I cannot make any comparison to it, but after spending few days playing it, I cannot really recommend this game further. Despite implementation of well-known success mechanics similar / identical as in other strategy games, the game fells very tedious and buggy. Additionally, I was having problems to run this game performant despite running it on a gaming pc. The documented improvements were not working for me, game was not crashing often, but…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love strategy games and magic. I also remember playing this particular game long time ago and liking it. The game has some interesting mechanics and spells. But now, after trying it again, I can't recommend it. The interface and controls are bad. The way the armies choose their path is ridiculous. The prediction of how far an army is able to travel in the current turn are incorrect - the game updates them as an army moves. So you can't plan moves in a strategy game, not really. The game…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is still buggy after such time since release.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Large swaths of the game are obviously not working as intended. No explanations are given for some mechanics, such as the resist chance for the "tame" spell. Gigantify successfully increases unit damage by double, but shrinkify doesn't halve damage, like it claims. Dodge modifiers are sometimes flat values, sometimes percents multiplied into the current flat value, and sometimes seem to do nothing. The "Maul" ability is not decreasing accuracy correctly. Modifications to unit initiative…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a sequel to Fallen Enchantress, and it follows the same basic pattern. It has some really interesting systems that I think improved on the format of that game, such as the crafting system. However, in many ways it has dumbed down the game. There are less building improvements, no research tree, you generally stick to a single city, you no longer design units. The combat is much more simplified and unbalanced. In my first game I created a one hero army killing machine that proceeded…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a potentially good game with some pretty big flaws. It's a 4x Fantasy magic game in the vein of the classic Masters of Magic or the more modern Age of Wonders series. The art work is decent and there is a nice variety of leaders, factions and units. On the down side, the tactical combat is formulaic with the same small battle fields with limited terrain. Worse you end up fighting the exact same enemies in the exact same positions multiple times in every game. At the very least, the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're like me, you saw the mixed review rating and thought maybe this game us bad. From what I have played the game is overall OK. I've played as most as the characters and sadly besides a few things they all play the same overall. I've done 2 of the 3 endings. Fighting the Sorcerer King himslef is too hard so it's best to either beat him at his own game or take the sealing route. My advice is to play the game on the easiest difficulties first before playing on normal to understand how to…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After finishing game on insane difficulty I finally feel ready to write a review. In short, I think Sorcerer King Rivals is an amazing game. One of the best games I have ever played in fact. Having said that, I doubt it will appeal to people looking for a deep strategy game. Because this game is not that deep and not particularly hard, except, maybe for a highest difficulty. Also, I think it is important to mention, that I barely played FE:LH and did not like it at all so if you are looking for…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I find the diplomacy between the Sorceror King and the player to be quite interesting. A great 4X game. Of course, there will always be a comparison between their previous game The Fallen Enchantress I believe, but I think this version is a bit more polished. I am an old timer and compare all 4X games to Civilization, Masters of Magic, and Masters of Orion.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What a buggy mess. Like, how the "Tyrant" ruler cannot even build Pioneers to expand his kingdom which means he is literally unplayable! Golly. I cannot believe this is the re-released version of the game. I'd dread so see how vanilla Sorcerer King played.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is almost great, but is so serely lacking in documentation, mechanics, balance, and just plain sense, that it's pretty terrible. You are always hoplessly outmatched, right from the start. You pass some time having fun grabbing loot, exploring locations, fight a couple little bandits. And then, you're pretty much done. All the bandit armies are elite, you can't form armies big enough, make units strong enough, create more cities, or do anything else but hunker down in your base and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →We started with a Skorpider attack in Barbarians of Lemuria, and ended with the pantless cultist of a long-dead Sorcerer-King. Great last game of @_THE_KRAKEN_
neutral · AI labelView post →Cool concept, but fails due to some pretty crippling things. I find the fact that units miss more than they hit ruins the game. I literally had a round where the enemy hit over 10 times and I had yet to hit with an attack out of 10 tries. It is just unbalanced and not rewarding. EDIT: Played a bit more and nothing really changed. I will play it again though I think, just because there still isn't much that competes with this company. Get this game on sale. it is still good to have in the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Overall if you see this game on sale for 15 or less then it's a must buy. It is not as in depth as SK: Elemental, Endless Legend, or even AOW3 for that matter. However, as a fairly short 4x fantasy fix it does well. Think of it as a fast food burger. It's not from a 5 star place, but it cost less and can get you your fix quickly. Enjoy
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I spent 5 hours playing this game today and I have no idea what I am supposed to be doing really. I don't understand how to best level up my character or my hero. I don't really understand the point of the game (apart from don't let the Sorcerer King win), but I'm still not even sure how that is supposed to work. The start of the campaign was surprisingly hard, even on beginner difficulty level, and I gave up because constantly losing is an awful feeling. It would help if there were helpful…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really enjoy this game. The graphics are nice along with the combat animations. It has enough depth to keep me interested and the crafting is a lot of fun. I'm really puzzled on why the reviews are not better but to each their own.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its a fun game for one campaign. It gets repetitive pretty quickly though. I started a second game with a new general, because I wanted to explore the other factions aswell. I quickly became bored with my second game as gameply just gets really repetitive. Buy in sale, fun for a weekend.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So far, pretty fun 4X. Combat (tactical, zoomed-in) is fun with a variety of unit abilities. You can equip every unit, encouraging investment in units that are not heroes. Neutral "barbarians" are very strong, expect to be fighting only those for at least the first 40 turns. You encounter multiple-choice events where choices will affect whether you fight, what loot you receive, and so on. The writing is humoristic, I found it sometimes funny and sometimes cringeworthy. These quests are…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Too many code bugs, key shortcuts didn't work, screen buttons disappear...
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Still buggy. City battles lock up when an enemy unit can't decide what to do. If you accelerate combat, you lose a combat (and city) that you shouldn't lose. Rage frustration. A game like this has no business having game breaking bugs this long after release.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its a bit of a misplaced change from Fallen Enchantress, in that we lose some of that wonderful complexity. But on the whole I enjoy the streamlined game play and the upgraded graphics. The streamlining also lets the AI play better. Still my favourite two fantasy 4x since Master of Magic.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As much as I like this somewhat simplified iteration of Fallen Enchantress, I can't recommend it based on the amount of bugs still present at the time of writing. In one game the button to access the ability tree completely vanished, in another I couldn't activate unit abilities in tactical combat because I had too many items. Then there's the regular crashing to Steam. And at least one achievement didn't trigger, even though I'm certain I met its conditions. I really dislike it when a game…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There;s nothing wrong with the game however given the amazing 4X games over the last several years, I couldn't find a reason to play this one for more than a couple of days. What I Liked - Quest are varied - Breadth of equipment options - Solid 4X structure What I Didn't... - Characters and hero's were flat - Story wasn't compelling - AI was eh - Castles were hard to defend in the early game from marauding armies
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoy this game a lot, even having so many minor bugs. The art fits perfectly with the game concept, has a lot of sidequests and variety of loot and crafting. Maybe lacks more variety of recuitable troops, champions and spells when you have played a good amount of hours. For me, more than 200 hours for unlock all achievements. Also has map editor and steam workshop. Overall, if you like fantasy strategy games, this game worth a try imho.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gave up fighting OP units one-shoting you hero or other units. It has great ideas but no ballance.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is like Fallen Enchantress Legendary Heroes, which I played a lot a couple of years back, but more streamlined. I can appreciate that some people don't like stripped down features, but personally I always enjoyed the early game exploration side of 4X games more than the late game grind and building a million cities with a million buildings, so this game is good for me.

neutral · AI labelView post →I purchased the key at a really low price and enjoyed the game for a short period before noticing it's only half of FE:LH, this is a simplified version of that game. Not REAL bad as long as you think of it as a patronage to the developers. Maybe though $10 would be more like it. 6.5/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Completed the campaign on some theory crafting after messing around a bit. Stack archers and archer heros and get the ranged unit passive along with a decent tank and just steam roll everyone to the ground. Using tinker makes it even more easy with imba items.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Old but gold game. Very different approach to Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes, easy to get into and time after time I love to return to it, making another playthrough with new variations. Can recommend it still though it has it's age, it's time over time fun get back to it and play.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I find the direction in art style a bit off-putting; however, after 40 hours I've found the gameplay more than makes up for it. The ingame text is very comical. Overall the game is definitely entertaining.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you have played Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes, skip this one. While the graphics are better compared to FE, the game is much more shallow and just a slimed version of FA. All deep features are cut out. Which is a real shame, because the game could have been cool. If you never played Fallen Enchantress, or find FE too complicated, you might give this one a try, if it's on a discount. You can have fun for a couple of hours, with an lightwight strategie/rpg-like game. Steam does not…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its a bit boring. I can't help but compare to Fallen Enchantress. Sorcerer King doesn't really encourage competition other civilizations. Expansion is rare and difficult to find viable locations for new cities. The game is pretty easy as well. Quests are short and simplistic. level ups don't feel especially useful. low diversity of items and events. just tame. stick to Fallen Enchantress.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While the game doesn't feel as innovative in this incarnation, it is a formula that works. I wouldn't have bought it if I didn't enjoy Fallen Enchantress, so in that way, this fits a sort of "fantasy strategy meets comfort food" vibe. I've enjoyed all the snarky little quests and 4th wall breaks, but I guess some small part of me was hoping for more. I don't know what that would have looked like, but there just feels like some tiny piece missing.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A clone of other games in the series not offering much difference but saying that if you like this kind of game its worth a go I would just have liked something a bit more imaginative. One major flaw which needs addressing urgently is that the game frequently drops out with a "fatal error" it quickly loads up again but if you don't like this kind of thing then you will soon get fed up.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good on paper, but in practice... pretty meh. Repetitive gameplay, the different factions don't really play that differently, the quests and events seemed well written at first, but got boring and insignificant quite quick. I'm not saying this is a bad game, it just isn't particularly good in its genre. I also had a few issues with the UI and a couple of minor but annoying technical issues, but in the end it was easier for me to forget this game and move on instead of trying to sort out…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A single-player-only RPG-4X hybrid (with 4X as the background). Gameplay for me is to play on an easy difficulty, send my main army around to locations to gain XP/equipment/units, and get strong enough to take down the SK's lieutenants and the SK himself. You can build cities, research spells, construct city buildings. On harder difficulties you have to worry about running out of time (eventually the SK wins by gaining ascension points but it's easy enough to keep at 0 on easy). There are two…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is story rich and funny, however, if you love fallen enchantress. Don't have too high hopes. This game has alot of stuff that was missing in fallen enchantress, however, most of the things that made fallen enchantress amazing has been toned down or simplyfied making this a shallow successor. It's kind of fun, but I miss some of the rpg aspects with customizing both your sovereign and your starting hero. I really would not recommend this game for full prize, but if you're bored and get…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I mean yeah, this doesn't go too far beyond what you'd expect from an ambitious mod of the most recent FE game. And yeah, they're already on thin ice considering how utterly iterative the FE "series" is in the first place. But taken on its own, this is an enjoyable game. It does provide a more directed and streamlined approach to fantasy 4X gameplay, and it both loads and plays quicker than the FE games. And if you want the full 4X experience in this universe, FE:LH is still there. The…
