What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 257 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (119,481 of 134,538 positive).
Players praise the game's creative freedom and depth, comparing it to Lego or Minecraft for adults. [1][2][3] Many complain about aggressive DLC paywalling, with most build menu items grayed out unless purchased. [4][5][6] Some note a steep learning curve and poor tutorials, but say the game rewards persistence. [1][7][8]

500hrs+ and I would love to recommend this game. The game itself is fun but in recent years it has become plagued by the DLC. I'm not even against the DLCs even despite the fact this game is slowly becoming The Sims 4. Its the fact that if you choose not to buy them the game will still try to shove them down your throat in a pretty scummy way. Normally in most games if you do not own the DLC you play the game …

I've played just a bit. This game has a hard learning curve. If you are new, go through all the tutorials, it'll help a ton, and look over the controls, as that'll help a lot as well. If you're looking for a reason to play the game, there is no other game where you can stretch your imagination like this. Build anything and everything, make it functional or silly or both. If you've hit a creative wall, start looking …

It’s like Minecraft crashed into No Man’s Sky, where ship designs follow the Minmatar school of engineering (EVE Online: duct tape, prayers, and WD-40), the new player experience demands a physics master’s degree, the difficulty level sits slightly above a casual day in Dark Souls, and the learning curve feels like it was written by H. P. Lovecraft during a breakdown. The modding scene, the community, and the …

This is a game for people who enjoy engineering creative solutions for it's own sake. There is almost endless possibility for the active mind. I didn't have the mental fortitude to make it that far on my initial playthrough, but I hope to one day build a a mobile space base in which smaller functional vessels can dock. A giant space whale containing everything from fighters to transports. I would name it Purrgil. I …

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Space Engineers is still a good game, but it's hard not to feel like Keen has spent the last few years turning it into a DLC machine. A lot of the DLC content could have easily been part of the base game instead of being split up and sold separately. What's even harder to understand is that Space Engineers 2 has been out for a while now, and there really hasn't been much to show for it. Updates have been slow, major features are still missing, and progress feels incredibly sluggish. Meanwhile,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While they've clearly hit something compelling here, it's a bit of a 7 Days to Die situation where an incompetent studio walked assbackwards into a good game idea, unable to bring it to fruition. The codebase is godawful resulting in terrible performance and bugs, and mods are doing the heavy lifting for a game that despite being years out of early access still feels like an early access tech demo in terms of design, performance, bugs, and aesthetic. Add to that the fact that the CEO of Keen…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game, but honestly, no I wouldn't recommend it. It's more of an engine for what COULD be a game that never was. There's nothing to do, most the mods require DLCs, and they expect all the actual effort to come from the community while they shovel a copy+paste game as a "second" edition.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There is a good game buried somewhere deep inside, but it's way overshadowed by developer's greed. The game gives you some basic tools to start building, but upon very first opening of the build menu you see that 90% of it is permanently grayed out, because it's all DLC content. Okay, I check in the store and turns out the total cost of DLCs as of the time of writing this reviews is 4x (FOUR TIMES) the price of the base game. This is some Paradoxical levels of greed The game has been in…

neutral · AI labelView post →Really thought I could like this game, but couldn't get past even the basic parts of them. Coming from a background of steep learning curve games, this one didn't feel like I wanted to invest any time in, because I had lookup multiple things that should be obvious in a game like this. Basically, the user experience is not intuitive, so you end up searching for things that you shouldn't be searching for and should have been easily discovered in the game. Plus the latency is quite bad in…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very scummy and annoying (at least for a beginner) when half the items in the creative inventory are greyed out to advertise the DLC they're from with no way to turn them off. Didn't make me want to buy the DLC at all (or the second game which I was considering buying), made me want to refund the game instead if I hadn't already spent more than 2 hours on it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It would be fun if more than half of the stuff wouldn't be locked behind a paywall. Like a mobile game you need to pay to unlock all the options. But then why do I need to pay for the basegame?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i had lots of fun making a base, a big drill attached to my base, a big car thing to drill ores, a spaceship and stuff... but the biggest flaw is that there is no goal or challenge or quest to make you build vehicles around them, the fun screeches to a halt once you build a spaceship and leave the planet because you have nothing else to really do

Every thing is client side and is easily hacked, again poor coding... Any playable server is 90% mods and 10% game, its the only way to make it playable and the mod world is poorly managed, expect crashes and sim speed issues.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I see why people love this game. It's complex and rewards your time once you learned the systems. But I spent more time watching YT tutorials than playing. I think the QoL with the menus and craft-queueing needs a massive overhaul which is a problem since the entire premise of the game is crafting items. As a new player, when I want to put something from my inventory onto the toolbar (a simple and normal task), I shouldn't have to search a list of every item in the game to find it. I don't…

There is a bug that causes spaces to depressurize for no reason, even when you have completely sufficient resources. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Factorio devs spent a decade optimizing their game so well it could run on a potato. Space Engineers devs apparently spent that same time...just making content packs, I guess? Because this game's optimization is pretty bad. I've got a reasonably beefy computer. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well, I figure at this point, 3000+ hours into the game I should probably leave a review. I have been playing SE since it was originally released on Early Access. It has been a roller coaster of ups and downs, primarily on stability of multiplayer. It's finally at a point where it's stable 99% of the time. Sure there are still quirks here and there, but nothing a simple F5-Reconnect won't resolve. Many times these "issues" aren't game issues, but players not knowing what they are doing.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Space Engineers is a genuinely good game with excellent mechanics and a very interesting concept. The building system, engineering mechanics, and overall freedom the game offers are very well designed, and the concept itself is something I really enjoy. There is a lot of potential here, and when the game works, it can be incredibly fun. However, there is one major issue that seriously hurts the experience: the game feels extremely empty in terms of content. The core mechanics are polished and…

I don't see the any problem with tutorials as people say, I think people are just getting too lazy, cause this one is one the simplest and most intuitive of the genre I've played so far. However what i just experienced was genuinely one of the worst tutorial sequences I think I have in a game. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Once you download the addon that removes all of the DLC icons, you realize how little this game actually comes with. The game constantly reminds you of all the DLC content via advertisments on the main menu, pause screen, outposts and stations and landing pods that are primarily blocks that look as though they should belong in the base game but dont. Great game, fun to play with friends, but the DLC advertising is turning me off playing rather than enticing me to purchase them, or the Dev's…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In its current state, the base game easily delivers around 400 hours of pure enjoyment. However, the modding community unlocks literally thousands of hours of extra playtime (some people have tens of thousands). I have 2,708 hours so far, and the game still feels as fresh and exciting as day one. For so many years, updates with a few new elements were just released each time and somehow the game remained empty. Somehow the creators of the game did not want to improve…

Some bugs are very old like 10+ years and some are brand new. Like ore detection is still giving false results. Or battery consumption is not showing correct/all values. Like it says i will be charged in x-amount of time but in real its draining. Kinda game breaking for online servers.
