Stacking is an adventure puzzle video game developed by Double Fine Productions and published by THQ in February 2011 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 video game consoles. A Windows version was released in March 2012, and OS X and Linux versions were released in May 2013. Third time I've tried this game. It has everything I want from a game: originality, wacky jokes, classic cinema references, a lot of love and care... But my experience is a terribly boring and graphically painful game. The mechanics are very original, but looking for dolls and trying their powers is really slow and boring and walking around feels really bad, it makes me feel a little dizzy and tires my eyes. I feel …

Pleasantly surprised with how well this game held up and how much I enjoyed it. It's a very simple puzzle game that feels almost collectathon-y, you solve puzzles by stacking into larger nesting dolls with unique abilities. There are multiple solutions to each puzzle and the game encourages you to complete them all, find all the unique dolls, and complete all the secret challenges in each level. It's a bit janky and …

Morlan's shorts: One of those games that people who played it will remember it years later. Wins on originality alone but there's so much more to it. The main mechanic is the matryoshka dolls (матрёшка) or stacking dolls for those western ignoramus(es? ignorami? take your pick) that can't remember a single "foreign" word. Hence the name.. You start off as a wee doll and stack on others (or un-stack accordingly) in …

Wonderful fun game experience. Thoroughly enjoyable. Nice to have such fun puzzle challenges in a non combat setting where nobody is out to kill you, ever. The art is quite special emulating the silent movie era. The violin music is quite sweet also. I certainly appreciate the hint system being built in, without which it would be impossible to solve most things. Nice to see all the different types of dolls who are …

Relaxing puzzle game where you take control of (stack into) matryoshka dolls, taking advantage of their different skills to solve puzzles. Full of the Double Fine charm. 100% played on Steam Deck without any issues. The downside is that it's locked to 30fps.

Critics, per Wikipedia
Stacking has received largely positive critical appraisal. Most reviewers commented on the short length of the game if one simply progressed through the story without exploring any of the alternate solutions or side puzzles, and may be considered too short a game for the $15 price. Many felt that with the full exploration possible within the game, Stacking is well-worth the price without becoming too long or repetitive; Chad Sepieha of The Globe and Mail stated that the game is "a great example of what a $15 digitally distributed game can be", while Justin Haywald of 1UP.com found strong preference for the way that Stacking "condenses a fun experience into several great hours rather than…

I'm going to leave a positive review even though I got bored half way through and just couldn't be asked to continue. Sucks that it's locked to 30fps and the stacking prompt doesn't always register, otherwise the game didn't age bad at all.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No matter what comes from the realm of Double Fine, I always applaud them for trying to be different come every title. Stacking is one of the most unique games you could ever try and play. The setup is astonishingly simple. Work as a stacking doll going around the map level you are put into and utilise the various characters and environments to help solve various puzzles. What more I like about this is how its executed. You have a great level of guesswork and from what I recall some big…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Stacking is one part point-and-click adventure, two parts walking simulator, and three parts collect-a-thon. You don’t need twitch gaming skills to succeed, but you do need plenty of patience to explore the world, talk to the characters, and watch the cutscenes to understand your goal. If all that sounds right up your alley, then this game is worth a shot. What hooked me towards wishlisting this game is the description of using different characters’ special abilities to solve puzzles. It…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a game for children, but done in a very charming way with rather unique game mechanics. Quite short, and with fairly easy puzzles - an enjoyable romp.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of my all time favourite games. I'd love a sequel but have never found anything remotely like this. So unique and replay-able.

Stacking the box and playing against Florida’s D is gonna save Shane Beamer’s job. 🤣 Stories of our resurrection may have been exaggerated. 4-2 At this point would have been a number I’d take, but this trend is concerning. At least it seems that Missouri is actually good.

Stacking is a real hidden gem (less than 1000 reviews at the time of writing this). I honestly don't quite understand. It's visually super charming and has excellent gameplay. It's child friendly but not childish. The puzzles are fun... seriously people, at the time of writing this it's on sale for 1.63€ and it's easily worth the ~8€ when it's not on sale. Get this. If you have any love for…

I watched the trailer and now I remember this unique little gem! You solve puzzles by stacking and unstacking lovely little dolls to unlock new areas, find keys, and... witness a bit of farting as well. No really, it's a great game. It's like a silent film starring Russian nesting dolls, and somehow it all just works. Double Fine did a fine job with…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is a very charming game short and sweet! 8/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →All of the puzzles solve in the same way. Multiple solutions to the puzzles do not make up for the repetetiveness. Lack of quality of life features hits hard especially with the long and unskippable cutscenes
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →THIS GAME WAS AHEAD OF ITS TIME IN MY OPINION! It's so funny, adorable, and just very strange. I love Stacking, bought it day one when it came out a long time ago on the Playstation. It still holds up to the fun and it was wonderful revisiting this little gem. There needs to be more games like this. You know, fun games with aesthetic? Made by people who actually care about their product? Yea. Collecting all the little dolls, doing the little side missions for them to unlock puzzles, it's a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"Stacking is a classic style-over-substance ""puzzle"" sandbox game. Prepare to watch long, stylish cutscenes, then play for two minutes, then watch more long cutscenes. Puzzles are really just tasks that are spelled out so directly one wonders why they couldn't also be cutscenes. The writing is tediously average, with the visuals and music doing most of the heavy lifting. The only really charming thing about this game is a handful of animations; otherwise it feels like a silly, sandbox-y tech…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fun game with a cool and polished stacking ability! That's right, this game does a good job on its central premise! More seriously though, this is a nice adventure game with a well thought out mechanic that's both unique and fun. This game does have some "Gross-Out" humor, but it's not *too* bad. (If you're interested in a game centered around Matryoshka dolls, go get this game!)

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As an avid gamer, I can say that Stacking is one of my absolute favourite games. It combines puzzle and adventure elements in a unique way and fascinated me from start to finish. Here are some reasons why I think Stacking is a great game: 1. innovative gameplay: the idea of stacking other dolls as a matryoshka doll, using their unique abilities, is a brilliant innovation in the puzzle genre. Each doll has its own strengths and weaknesses, and combining different abilities is the key to solving…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →INCONSISTENT INVENTORY STACKING IS A CRIME AGAINST GAME DEVELOPMENT. If I can have 99 oak, I should be able to have 99 apples, not 50. If i can have 250 salmon, I should be able to have 250 flowers, not 100. I will die on this frakking annoying hill.

neutral · AI labelView post →Another way of saying "rules of the game," of course, is STACKING THE DECK. Because the "set of opportunities" they had, and want for their children, was rooted in the inequitable treatment & subjugation of OTHERS.
neutral · AI labelView post →I played this game way back when it first came out, on Xbox 360. it is 2026 and I STILL love this game. It is just so quirky, simple yet complex, funny and just all around comical and crazy. there is nothing quite like it. (-:
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Stacking is one of those rare games that feels truly original — the idea of possessing Russian nesting dolls to solve puzzles with their unique abilities is charming and endlessly creative. Double Fine's signature humor shines throughout, from the silent film-style cutscenes to the absurd doll abilities like tossing cookies or seducing guards with a gloved slap. Each puzzle has multiple solutions, which kept me experimenting and laughing rather than feeling stuck, and the optional hint system…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It took me 12 years, but I finally beat Stacking, a game that captured my interest when first announced -- long before real life interfered. I'm happy to say that this whimsical puzzle game mostly lived up to my expectations. Sure, it maybe went on for a few challenges too long, but the levels and extras were worth exploring. Sure, some dolls looked a tad too similar, but the overall presentation was superb.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Stacking is one of Double Fine's hidden gems. I grew up playing this game so there's a bit of nostalgia chucked in there, but you cannot fault the concept. I've never played another game with a similar premise and the silent movie element of the game makes it perfect thematically. I would love to see more people know about this game because it's just so unique and deserving of it's place amongst Double Fine's ranks. Be open and go along for the ride and there's fun to be had.
