What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 177 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (1,403 of 1,550 positive).
Players praise the game's Lovecraftian atmosphere, art, and sound design. [1][2] Many compare it favorably to Papers, Please with a horror twist. [3][4][5] Some reviewers find the gameplay becomes repetitive or frustrating later on. [6][7][8]

Starts off super strong but overstays its welcome. There are 15 days in total and by day 10 I was quite fed up with everything, googled how much there is - and after realizing I had to sit through 5 more nights promptly quit. Earth is covered by a massive aurora which renders most modern communication devices useless. They reactivated lighthouses and installed you as one of the keepers. You communicate with the …

Keep the lighthouse alight, guide sailors to port, don't lose your mind. Fantastic premise, fantastic detailing, so-so execution, but still incredibly unique and interesting. What I loved: The graphics, the art, the atmosphere, the music. Lovecraftian works can be hit or miss for me, and this game was a big ol' hit. Placing your character in a lighthouse where you can observe the ocean from the tower, open the …

Reviewing (mostly) every game (or DLC) in my library, part 630: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆☆☆ (7/10) You know, I was about to give Static Dread: The Lighthouse a high 8/10. For the first couple of hours, I was really enjoying the game's writing, atmosphere, and choices! But it seemed like I hit a wall at Day 10 out of 15. The gameplay just ... got too repetitive for me. I feel like I've seen everything I need to, and I honestly …

Okay, so I went into Static Dread: The Lighthouse expecting another cheap walk-n-flicker fest, but damn. This little indie gem got under my skin in the best way. First off – the atmosphere is chef's kiss. You’re alone in this crumbling lighthouse, wind howling, radio static cutting in and out, and every floorboard creaks like it's personally judging you. The devs clearly put love into the lighting and sound design. …

A very enjoyable game that gets very frustrating 2/3 of the way in due to bugs and bad design choices. I still recommend it because the problems all started on Night 10 or later, of 15 nights, and I had a great time with this highly atmospheric game up until then. I do wish the devs would fix their game before going on to make and sell new games. The good: if you like Lovecraft or Lovecraftian atmosphere, this does …

neutral · AI labelView post →There is no excuse for a game not having configurable keybinds nowadays, no matter if indie or mainstream. Configurable keyboards aren't an universal solution. Besides the fact that we should not do the developer's work, laptops usually don't have them. Besides individual preferences, 10% of the world is left-handed. So, one in ten people will just open the game, try to play for five minutes and ask for a refund. Just as I did.

Apparently the game saves automatically at the end of each night or the start of each day, I'm not sure. Of the 2 hours I've played, 50% (1 hour) was wasted as I didn't play until the end of the day/start of the next day. Both times I thought "OK I'm done with this day, I'll quit and come back later". Both time I fire it up again and I've lost an entire day (about 1/2 hour of real time play…

neutral · AI labelView post →I really wanted to like this game, but I just can't. The gameplay loop is boring AF, even though it tries to be a Papers please like game, you really don't feel the need for money. After 10 ingame days, I think it's like 15 that it ends, I had zero idea why I should eat stuff other than keeping my character awake. There are three meters of things that supposedly would affect you, but none of them really matter as long as you stay in the light. This game had such a great premise but the poor…

positive · AI labelView post →Lovecraftian Papers Please is an apt description. Unfortunately, I think this game falls short on multiple levels. The story is passable and the choices you make do have an effect on it, though sometimes it takes a while for the game to see those choices or implies you made a different one than you did, when its even clear how to make a choice. The dialogue isn't particularly well written either. The gameplay itself is quite tedious and repetitive, mainly going through the dial repeatedly and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A Lovecraftian Papers, Please that oozes atmosphere. Excellent gameplay and execution of its concept. Play as a new wickie, a lighthouse keeper taking over from the previous one who has gone missing. Maintain the lighthouse, cleaning away cobwebs and bloody eldritch sigils, making sure to perform your duties while maintaining your energy and sanity. Gameplay is broken up into a section before your shift and the shift itself. Prior to starting your shift you can go fishing to keep yourself…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Games have rules. If your HP reaches zero, you lose. Easy enough, we can all follow the rules and expect the game to follow the rules too. But the rules are rather unclear, buggy, or downright mean. Talking on the radio(you can't move) and an enemy spawned under my feet randomly and undid about 20min of my progress. Love the concept, execution was weak along with some weak characters and pop-culture references. Some were good, like GNR from Fallout 3. Others. . . too on the nose.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wished I loved this game. The first half of the game is great, but the bugs kinda mess things up a little bit. I really liked how efficient it was in its storytelling and dialogue. The atmosphere was great. Even some horror elements worked for me as a newbie to the genre. And then there is a long list of 'howevers'... By the end though this becomes an issue because a lot of nuance is lost, and it's just bad vs worse, and not in a very interesting or exciting way Maybe i was doing…

neutral · AI labelView post →Just like in the description, Papers, Please in a Lovecraftian setting. It starts slow on the actual ''bureaucratic'' mechanics, the game eases you slowly into the various informations you have to keep track of when you manage the ships and it does it well. When you start doing things eyes closed the game throws at you something new to pay attention to so it never gets boring or overly repetitive. On top of that, as every other graveyard shift worker, you have to manage your energy and stay…

negative · AI labelView post →I love this game. One of my favorites in the last few years, and one of my favorite horror games ever, specifically because of how well it evokes a sense of tension and allows it to progress without being disrupted by frustration. It does "checking" well. It's like a temporary case of OCD structured by a time-respecting and pleasurably cathartic cycle of tension and release that left my heart rate elevated for a while after playing. It also maintains a sense of mystery. It allows you to…

positive · AI labelView post →From a technical point of view, this game is like Papers, Please, but with boats and a Cthulhu mythology vibe. The graphics and soundtrack are quite good, and despite its simplicity, the storyline features many branches and different decisions to take. Unfortunately, if you've played similar games before, you know how to game the system and take full advantage of it. The developers didn't add any additional factors (such as rotting food or rituals), so it's easy to get enough resources to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Static Dread: The Lighthouse. neutral · AI labelView post →Static Dread: The Lighthouse is an amazing and genuinely interesting experience. The atmosphere is strong from the very beginning. The plot keeps you engaged, and throughout the game you constantly feel like the narrative is non-linear — like your choices matter and can change something. That feeling alone carries a lot of tension and curiosity. The visual direction is excellent, and the sound design deserves special praise. It really builds that unsettling, immersive mood the game is…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Id say overall the game is good! It has fun mechanics with listening to the radio and guiding ships where they are supposed to go, and it gets suprisingly tense as the game progresses and gains more and more story beats. I enjoy how the game portrays your lack of reality and the unstableness of everything around you. It makes you feel paranoid, with so many different perspectives and clashing truths that cancel eachother out, so you have to really think on who You want to trust. The graphics…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You need to get through 15 nights at the lighthouse. In the evening, you prepare by buying, eating and drinking your supplies to make sure your sleep and sanity meters won’t deplete too fast during the night. Then, at night, you work in a Papers, Please manner: giving ships proper directions (checking their papers and conditions against the rules, deciding where and how to route them) and keeping your workspace in order by fixing broken things, keeping the lights on, etc. Occasionally you’ll…

The graphics are poor, the mechanics are shallow, you will mess one small thing up and complete change the story you're trying to build. Idk what happened on day 14 but suddenly the sheriff said he hated me and died when I didnt even get his ship, every cultish ship I sent to the quarantine and I always tried to help humanity…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm recommending this game with a gigantic "HOWEVER--" tacked on, because while I think this game has a lot of things going for it, there's a lot to be desired. Grab it on a big sale if you can, tbh. What I like: - The art direction. This game looks great. The characters are fun and darkly whimsical / a little nasty and the style is unique and the vibe is sickly haunted nautical nightmare. It's peak, no notes. I love looking at it. - The first half of this game. Engaging story, cool…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Static Dread: The Lighthouse, developed by solarsuit.games and published by Polden Publishing, is a slow-burn psychological horror experience that thrives on isolation, responsibility, and an ever-present sense of cosmic unease. Rather than relying on conventional horror tropes or frequent jump scares, the game places the player in the role of a solitary lighthouse keeper in a fractured world, where the simple act of guiding ships through treacherous waters becomes an increasingly unsettling…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game with a relatively simplistic premise but also pretty good atmosphere. Multiple choices through the story leading to different endings. Plenty of Easter eggs. Fair price. The only con would be the fact that the player cannot leave the lighthouse and is forced to only watch the overall story unravel outside. But it also partially helps with overall atmosphere and hopelessness. Fans of Lovecraftian horror will like this. I am fan of Lovecraftian horror. I like it.
