What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 175 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (5,871 of 6,256 positive).
Players praise the unique manual aiming and ricochet mechanics that set it apart from other tactics games. [1][2][3] The charming art style, music by Steam Powered Giraffe, and variety of characters are frequently highlighted. [1][4][5] Some reviewers find the procedurally generated levels repetitive and unpredictable, hurting replayability. [6][7][8]

I really wanted to like this game since it's such a unique twist on the tactical RPG, but unfortunately the level design is so unpredictable (and not in a good way) and repetitive. Yes, I did mean to use those words together. It's unpredictable because the game uses poorly-coded procedural generation that can drastically alter the difficulty of a level depending on if it randomly decides to spawn every enemy close …

Released in 2015, SteamWorld Heist is a spin-off of the SteamWorld series, developed by Image & Form. Set in a post-apocalyptic world where steam-powered robots roam, players take on the role of Captain Piper as she leads her crew on a quest for treasure and survival. Strengths (Plus Points) Unique Gameplay Mechanics: The game features a turn-based combat system that allows players to aim and shoot in real-time, …

XCOM, but 2D. Actually very good, enjoyed it a lot. Gameplay is very fun, characters are varied and enjoyable. Move to place, take aim and shoot. Fun to get trick shots. Several characters to choose from, missions have different team limits from 1 to 4 different characters. Every character has a slightly different play style, usually focusing on two of three points: movement, damage and health. Leveling them takes a …

A hidden gem Discovered this one day while looking for some cheap games on discount, glad I did. Steamworld Heist feels like a refresher from games like XCOM by introducing one simple mechanic, manual aiming. As a plus, you can ricochet your bullets off walls and hit some sick shots! Story I'd say is basic, but fun. Y'know, your usual "saving the galaxy by building a rag-tag crew" kind. But the cast of colourful …

Players who liked SteamWorld Heist talk about manual aiming and ricochet shots add strategic depth; those who didn't talk about procedural generation can make levels feel unfair. Which matters more to you?
Critics, per Wikipedia
SteamWorld Heist has received positive reviews on all platforms, with current scores ranging from 81 to 91 on Metacritic. Dave Rudden of IGN praised the game's depth, addictive combat and charming characters, though he lamented the lack of utilization of 3D effects in the 3DS version. Mitch Vogel of Nintendo Life praised the game's design and gameplay and considered the Nintendo Switch version the best version to play it.

neutral · AI labelView post →Since everyone else is sharing, here are my Nintendo stats for the year! And real-talk, the genre stat is borked. I put a good 40-50 hours into Fire Emblem GBA and Steamworld Heist, so strategy should be a lot higher than 3%. And I'm guessing Shooting is as high as it is because of Splatoon 3.
neutral · AI labelView post →liked the first 2 hours or so, but then the game becomes too repetitive and missions just blend into each other with almost no new mechanics or twist. I feel like there could be a great game made out of a 2d tactics genre but this one just misses the mark by being too repetitive.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →SteamWorld Heist is one of those turn-based games I always come back to. Aiming your shots manually makes every turn feel like a mini adventure.
