Underneath everything, it's a fun game. But holy hell is this the WORST progression, achievements, and grinding of any game I have ever played, zero exaggeration. Context: As of this writing, I am #103 in the Undead leaderboard and #344 in the Human one. I have 100% the game's achievements, putting me at 0.1% of the playerbase. The core concept of the game is extremely compelling. The base-building and kingdom management are very well done (especially on the Undead side), and the variety of champions and units is commendable. This is poorly described in the tags and promos so here goes: a Rogue-Village, auto-battling, clever resource manager. There's no bullet-hell action (wtf PC Gamer?) there's no deck of cards... at all. Even more of a tower-defense than dungeon crawler for pete's sake. What it is is quite an original and quirky, addictive brain-burner that rewards opportunism and replay. Actually... because of the human and undead …

Let's be clear this game's progression moves at the speed of a tectonic plate. You don't "level up" so much as you "incrementally ooze" toward the next stat point. It's 3 AM. My eyes feel like two dry grapes. But my brain, that traitorous lump of dopamine-starved jelly, is chanting: "One More Run" because every tiny, incremental win feels amazing. But here’s the real kicker. I was 17 hours in. I had my builds …

4/10 incremental game. It's ok. This games advertising in deceptive. While a roguelike, a city builder, and a strategy game, all three elements are executed in a fairly shallow manner because this is actually an incremental game at its core and the point of all three systems is to engage with this core purely. - The strategy is pretty much nothing. It boils down to getting the right units at the right stage of the game, putting them in the exact right spot, and calling it a day. It's actually…

[NOTE: There is information at the end towards the current state of the game/my opinion. I am leaving up the original review text, but be advised it may or may not reflect the state of the game anymore] I honestly feel like this game tricked me into liking it at first There were so many good things that I saw in the first hours of the game: an economy system with multiple resources that you can focus on, progression based on glory as you get further and further in the game, which early on…

I'm pretty disappointed, but it's personal. This game is a super good idea; but it's not done the way I personally enjoy. I loved the game for the first few runs. My main problem though... This game is solved-by-design. There are 1-2 actual build orders you NEED to do in order to win, and you can only unlock those after like 50 runs. (Ex: Day 1 build tavern, lumber, house, quarry, swap 1 cutter to stone, gather 3 stone, swap to wood, upgrade castle.) 50 near identical runs where if you're…

Was really waiting for this game since the early demo, but unfortunately I ended up a bit disappointed. There's not that much strategy or player agency during a run, and little room for skill improvement. It doesn't follow the classic roguelike pattern of understanding the game, developing better strategies, and overcome increasingly difficult challenges. Instead, it's more focused toward repeating runs to gain more meta progression, to unlock new lands, to get more meta progression, to then be…

I feel like I'm progressing because it's scripted, and that the decisions I have to make were pre-planned by the developer and I just need to keep bashing my head against a wall until I find a loose brick that can be moved by my skull. I have not enjoyed playing this. There are multiple discussion comments where people post far more knowledgeable misgivings about the game's design. I got this game at release after three different YouTube creators I regularly watch played and recommended it to certain degrees. I just wanted to check out the steam page, but since it was on sale, I just grabbed it, because those creators taste usually aligns with mine. Not in this case. I don't know if they just didn't play far enough, but this game wastes your time with a very slow meta progression and very little you can actually do to alter your playstyle. This game really plays like a grind - like an idle game but somehow without the ease. Like a strategy game but without the depth. I'd strongly recommend waiting until the developer can improve the design around the core gameplay loop. PROS: - Excellent pixel art. The game's art is charming and the game is just fun to look at. - The game has a couple hours of fun near the start while you are learning the systems and progression is quick. - Music and sound are fine, surprisingly they didn't…

I think this game sorely missed the point of roguelikes. Roguelikes are interesting because they offer challenging gameplay, where mistakes lead to your death. By replaying over and over, you are meant to improve your skills and stop dying because you got better at the game. Roguelikes do also introduce permanent progression between runs, which in some games acts as a handicap to make the game itself intrinsically easier without requiring you to get better at the game to progress, but playing…

This game exposes a small flaw in the Steam review system in that I really like the game, but struggle to recommend it to anyone but the right person. I don't generally recommend it, but it scratches a certain itch. Other reviews are not wrong about glacial incremental progress. The dev has asked in a comment on a negative review what's grindy exactly and I'd like to directly address them while keeping this a review: you are numerically and strictly gated on progress. While this game…

This game is as good as it was during the demo. Albeit a LONG wait between demo and now, it was worth it. Priced right, easy to play...can't wait until after work so that I can play more. A very chillaxing game, with minor strategy that won't break your brain...but still challenge you. If you're looking for that game you always feel progression, this is it.

I won't give a negative review simply because there is a lot of heart and soul put into this game and I don't believe it deserves a negative review. And many people clearly like it. That being said, the game is not for me. Because of having to repeat the first 20 minutes over and over, it becomes incredibly tedious and boring. The game becomes grindy as runs go deeper and porgress slows. As soon as you learn witch units are terrible, the good ones dont seem that different from eacother, making every run the same. Its not a terrible game, but it really fizzles out and left me feeling like i wasted my time. I think this game is just OK for right now. It's a Roguelike, but not in a way I normally see. Every time you die, you have to rebuild the city, but with the way they have it set up, you have to build the city up in the same exact order every time. You have to set the Tavern first, then you have to set the Woodcutter shop, then a house, etc. It is the same each way due to how many materials it takes to build certain things and the storage of your castle. So I don't find anything all that…

The gameplay loop sucks. Just a massive flaw in an otherwise good game. You HAVE to use new heroes, units, items etc to level up your kingdom which is required for meta progression. Every new hero you are forced to do a run without starting equipment in order to unlock the equipment slots. You can only get access to the higher difficulties which are needed to unlock progression by doing SEVERAL of the same runs on different heroes. It's not a new civilization, it's one ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ unit that isn't…

I’ve read a ton of the negative reviews.... because that’s what I do, but the main complaint is that you can only get so far before you fail and have to start over. You kidding me? That’s the point. I'm a massive fan of roguelikes, I thought for sure I would really enjoy this game, but unfortunately this game simply doesn't sit well for me. A lot of reviews give an impression of a deep pool of content that isn't accessible until you grok the game, but in reality the game has a deliberately very slow progression system. A huge Grind If you are the type to see a Rogue Like who only really enjoys the ones where you can actually win the first round or the first round past tutorial, this is NOT the game for you. This is a game where the tutorial is only the beginner's tutorial. The real tutoriel is learning most of the game mechanics up to the point you have your first successful run potentially many hours later. Then you are greeted with the real toriel, an explanation of what is essentially an "ascension"…

Tags for this game aren't right. It's a city builder with auto battling on the side. It would be a stretch to call it even a roguelite. A large portion of the meta-progression depends on a currency (shards) that feels like a slog to get. You'll be repeating runs that don't feel different enough to warrant such a system in its current iteration. If you can get over this large hurdle there's a charming game underneath. That all being said I can't recommend this game in its current state of…

There is so much to like about this game but something needs to be done about the monotony and repetativeness at start of each run. It takes WAY too long to go through the early game at the start of each run, which is played basically the exact same way every time. At the end of a long run, my desire to restart is basically zero because I know I'll have an hour or more doing all the repetative boring tasks of startup again.

I want to love this game and it has so much potential but in its current state the progression is way too slow. It plays almost like it's an RTS build order practice tool-it feels like there is very little meaningful choice beyond optimizing the build order to try and progress a bit further into the map, but for that being the core gameplay loop the game speed is painfully slow.

This game tricks you into thinking its good when in reality, you're grinding unnecessarily samey playthroughs. I love the exploration and Heroes of Might and Magic style world events, but as many have said, as you get to later parts of the game, progress gets WAAAAAAAY more tedious. The game isn't terrible. It looks and sounds fine. but its the gameplay that really bothers me. The game feels very grindy and samey with only minute differences every run. It all just gets tiring and really frustrating when you try something slightly different only to realize the new unit you're trying for example, is actually terrible. This discourages experimentation and just makes the game's repetition even worse.

There's too much slewing and pixel snapping. Ick It has a nice retro soundtrack too. The English in it is terrible, as is every character. I can't be arsed to keep playing though, I think the "roguelite" aspect of the design just robs the game of any satisfaction as everything just becomes too…

It takes some time to figure out how everythings works, it's not very clear, hints are only displayed once, so if you miss it or forget it, too bad! The figuring things out is one of the fun parts for me in a game. I do have to say, I only played without difficulty enhancers. And I wish I would not have had to play the undead kingdom, but I belive the developer fixed that recently. No need for that anymore. Which is a good improvement in my opinion. I still recommend this game, but do be…

It's... okay. In a single word, it's too same-y. A little too grindy, feels more a casual mobile game that's also f'ing punishing. Quite the odd mashup. The early challenge and metaprogression seems like the mid and late game will blossom (which is to say it's fun and challenging), but after unlocking most of the game, I can't say it does. The grind makes early game easier, which makes the mid-game possible, which makes the end-game a bit more fun and variable (like which penultimate…

TL;DR: Game almost feels feature-complete already. This early access is mostly ironing out the issues and balance. It's definitely a playable game already with a satisfying amount of playtime available. It's fun. Really fantastic little roguelike - got some really refreshing ideas that seem novel to me. The beginning of the game is pretty grindy, and can feel a little samey at times, but once you've got the hang of it and unlocked some extra stuff for your kingdom the quality absolutely…

Ok so I want to throw this game some flowers first. Core gameplay loop? It's simple and fun! You're primarily in charge of resource managing your kingdom so you can increase the rate of your industry so that you can get resources to acquire new units, food to feed those units and make them stronger (better food = better units), and coins to upgrade their abilities into higher tiers and eventually evolve them into even better monsters at tier 3. The better your town, the directly better your…

It presents as a townbuilding roguelite, but functions as a participation required reset simulator. I'll revisit it in the future after a handful of updates, because there is a lot of potential here. But right now it's about as much fun as being stuck between 2 fires, alternating putting out each one half way until you run out of water, and then you go start 2 more small fires. It's got a lot of great pieces, but the way they all come together is incredibly lackluster. It is wildly…

Decently enjoyable in the start, gets a bit slow in the middle, and the end feels like you can do multiple runs over multiple hours with basically nothing to show for it. Will go from a wave not killing a single of your units, or even getting close, to the next wiping your entire team and nothing you try with all of your resets can save it.

This game is a bit deceptively marketed. Everything is on rails. Everything is deterministic. There is precisely one correct build path which must be followed to have a chance at surviving (which RNG determines based on troops it spawns for selection). You will always build the same things in the same order on the same days. It is an incremental, almost idle, game which resets frequently instead of compounding. Because the only way to progress is to die. And when you die, you’re…

Another case when it was hard to decide between positive and negative feedback, but I guess the time/price/fun proportion which I've sent it game was overall good. But. Buttttt..... There is something wrong with the progression system, it's hard to describes but it "feels" wrong and uncontrolled. Like in most games similar to this you have a lot of variation of How you can play to "win" and how you can progress, here, with times it becomes to repetative and any variation from "scenario"…

Like a lot of the reviews say, there's very little actual choice or agency. You're mostly just unlocking things in the order the game wants you to, dying on the wave it wants you to, going back to the start screen to get the rewards it wants you to, just so you can go back in and get to the next wave checkpoint that it wants you to.

Spoilers will be in the later paragraphs. SFK is a roguelite, city-builder, tower-defense of sorts. It features at least 11 unique champions to start a run with, and you can unlock features such as banning an unwanted element of gameplay or starting each run with multiple boons. Its roguelite elements mean you have new strategies and units to try out each run, and runs can last anywhere from 30-90m. For the positives, there are plenty of unit options, many unlocks to obtain through tasks for…

Alright, so I played this game a ton, it's great. But also, it's disappointing. You'll think there's another way to progress through the game, and you will be confronted by the fact that it's to bonfire max. You are currently a fool who doesn't even know what a bonfire is and you may think I'm resentful. One day you will realize the only way to progress is bonfire maxing, and you will know my disappointment.

The first couple hours were a ton of fun. Every run resulted in very obvious progress and I was still trying to figure out the “best” way to construct my base. It was feeling like Super Fantasy Kingdom would be one of those roguelikes I could sink my teeth into for dozens of hours. But then progression fell off a cliff and I was doing the exact same runs over and over again because there was nothing I could really change. I was just grinding for shards and with each run taking 30+ minutes it…

1st off I do really enjoy the game, already got my money's worth even if I dropped it here, the unlocking loops are definitely different than even midgame let alone endgame. That said I see why the frustration- Why is the game so grindy? Map needs progression to unlock stuff, but there's no practical way to actually vary a build so its just a bunch of slightly better runs in a row the real grind is the blue gems, particularly once you start sailing, "oh I got to island 3 but didn't have 100…

Game was so good I had to write my first ever review just because I think my steam friends who hopefully read this mindlessly will have no choice but to try it. Yes you unk. Yes you pook. Dave this game shares the synergy idea similar to spire, so i think you would enjoy it also. I bought the game simply for aesthetics and because it was tagged as something id like. Didnt read anything, just played and figured one thing out after another and once i discovered how complex and deep the game is i…

It's a very grindy game. You fail 100x but make progress with each run. The progress is slow but does pick up after a couple of dozen runs. If you like that type of game then it's a recommend. I do like this type of game. Runs are very similar but it's about tweaking what you're doing to be more efficient. The game doesn't throw anything new at you ever. You just have new unlocks from previous runs that hopefully let you get a few waves further in. First win took about 25 hours for me.…
