What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 286 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (1,432 of 2,546 positive).
Players are split on whether this is a good deal for new players or a cash grab for veterans. [1][2][3] Many report bugs carried over from the original, especially in DLC content. [4][5][6] Some appreciate the UI improvements and bundled DLC for newcomers. [1][7][8]

TL;DR: If you don't already own Surviving Mars: then I do recommend this product here. If you already own Surviving Mars, I recommend to wait for now. First, regarding Surviving Mars itself: it's one of my favourite city building games of all time, holding itself up there alongside the better entries of the Tropico, Anno and Sierra series. So if you never played Surviving Mars before: this is a very easy to …

It took a few patches, but after version 1.06 I can finally recommend this game to both new players and veterans of the original. In Relaunched version most of the bugs from original game (especially B&B and trains DLCs) are fixed, system is improved, and there is better integration of underground and surface gameplay, along with many UI and quality-of-life changes. Things like the reworked elevator system, train …

Let me start with the positives, the game itself is good. It feels like they fixed a lot of the bugs from the original, and the overall gameplay is much smoother and more polished. Negatives: Unfortunately, it feels like you’re just paying for bug fixes. They broke the first game by constantly adding new stuff, couldn’t fix it properly, so they rebuilt it and are now trying to re-sell essentially the same game. Keep …

For context: I have about 15 hours in SM: Relaunched at the time of writing this, but I have about 190 hours in the original game version. I owned the Green Planet DLC but did not buy Below & Beyond (the cave/asteroid DLC) or Martian Express (the train DLC) since both had very poor reviews. Therefore, Surviving Mars: Relaunched was my first experience with these. Considering this game has had a great deal of time to …

Hell no, i wont be paying for bugfixes and a facelift so you can just abandon the game again and cash out on me again with "Surviving Mars Re:Relaunched" in the future. This should be free, i own all major DLC's and 2 of them are broken. One of them even to a degree that i have enabled it ONCE and now you are charging for a fix. LMAO Regards, a stupid customer that bought your DLC's

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like Surviving Mars. That said, Steam doesn't have a sideways thumb option so I'm going to thumb this down for the following reasons. 1. I reported bugs to my PR rep mid October and they said they'd get back to me if they had any news on bug fixes. I never received an email. Some bugs were brought over from the old version (stuck forest progression meter, etc) and some are new. Below and Beyond is the most buggy out of all of them and my FPS takes a hit going underground. 2. New…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Perfectly illustrates the greed problem of modern game studios. The company responsible for this game tried making a couple of other titles in the same genre, failed at it and eventually decided to re-release the one title that they made money on. They say this is a graphics update. Not seeing it. Maybe the lighting's a bit better here and there but it feels very much the same as it was. Maybe the trees look a bit better in the terraforming stage. Some of the money stuff - the game costs more…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I hate leaving negative reviews—especially for a game that, in theory, I should love. But unfortunately, I can’t in good faith recommend this version. When you re-release a game, you’re inevitably competing with the original. That’s a tough challenge, especially when the original is already a fan favourite. For me, Surviving Mars is one of those comfort games I return to regularly. It’s the perfect blend of relaxing management and strategy—I can unwind, build my colony, and have something…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you played the original Surviving Mars, this is the exact same game. There are some minor UI improvement and a little bit of new content, but the vast majority of the game is exactly the same. It has far less than even their latter, ♥♥♥♥♥♥ DLCs. Re-releasing the same game and charging full price for it is certainly a choice.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To be a parrot, it's a scammy cash grab. Stick with the OG if you have it, if not, this is the exact same thing with more bugs, worse content, and no mods.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Play the original if you have it, skip this "upgrade". It doesn't really improve anything and actually introduces features that are annoying. Like politics. You can disable them, but then why bother paying for the upgraded version? They changed up the control menus, but just moving things doesn't improve them. The graphics really aren't much different. I noticed the maps seem more rugged, which just makes developing your colony harder. Maybe if I invested enough time to get farther into the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love surviving mars, but this is pretty cynical. Core bugs and issues were left in. Maybe if i buy the game for a third time...
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They still have not bothered to fix the colonists walking from one distant dome to another and suffocating as a result, a problem first reported at least 8 years ago. I loved this game, and now feel like an abused spouse, back for more punishment from the thing I love. DO not buy until they (hopefully) fix this basic issue.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I refunded this after learning that all the bugs in asteroids and caves they promised to fix are still there. If you promise to fix all the bugs and then charge a premium price for what should be a patch, at least fix the bugs.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the gameplay that we should have gotten from Surviving Mars. Most of the game is reused assets from the first game that we already payed for - why the hell are you charging for an entirely different game when this should've been FREE update on the original. The game is fun but I'm not recommending due to how much of a scam it is. Scummy company.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a v1.0.1 feedback. Game is still broken guys, they didn't fix a thing with the 1.0.1, and the same bug was present in the original game. CLASSIC PARADOX.... trying to make money without to spend time with development and bugfixing (or testing). The following is just a little part of the bugs / problems I found in my games in just 12 hours: - Power output of power accumulators doesn't contribute to the total displayed in the UI, following in a weird scenario: you can have a negative…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This "relaunched" is a disgraceful misleading to the owners of the original game pay more money without too much work. The game is, visually, exactly the same with some small remake on Mars surface and overall appearance. Paradox seems desperate for money.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is with a heavy heart that I'm writing a negative review, having loved the original game and completed all achievements in it. TL;DR this game should've been an expansion + new version of the prior one, not a separate game. Value for money is low (and I had 50% discount), and most importantly - the game lacks polish. You want to play this? Go buy Surviving Mars instead, it's cheaper and better. The good: * There is a new governance system that could've been a good expansion. It's actually…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Paradox has discovered Bethesda's ability to release the same game multiple times so you have to keep re-buying it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not a big enough improvement on the original, honestly made the game buggier. Paradox Interactive welcome to my black list, I will no longer buy your games.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bought the game just to leave this review. Petty? Yes, but it has to be said. As a returning player with nearly 300 hours in the Original. I was pretty hyped for this. Until, I saw the price. I bought the base game, and every single DLC, so it was a slap in the face to be honest. I would happily have paid for future DLC/Season passes going forward, but this stinks of cash grabbing, EA type behaviour. Its a massive shame as I'm a huge fan of Paradox's games (thousands of hours). But now it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Buy Surviving Mars. Wait until Paradox fixes it and finishes game mechanics. But then Paradox "Relaunches" the game, making you pay second time for the fixed game. No, I already paid for the game and I expected to get it finished and fixed, like what the Relaunched version is. This is getting ridiculous that customers are forced to pay multiple times for the same game. If car company fixes car's engine that is not working properly, you are not expected to pay full price of the car for the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So, instead of fixing bugs in the original game, they just decided to make a remaster. Then they sell it at full price even for people who own the original. Then they didn’t even fix a bunch of the bugs. Very scummy behaviour.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Update (2026-01-16): After the initial sorry state of the game, patch 1.0.4 has finally brought it to a level where, even if it’s not flawless, at least I no longer feel like ripping my own face off while playing. The frequent UI freezes and the most critical bugs seem to have been fixed for now, which is definitely a major step forward. Asteroid mining finally works, and the Lander’s automatic mode is surprisingly usable. Special praise goes to the balance changes affecting the political…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Only get this on sale if you really need it. Paradox ♥♥♥♥ on the player base that bought the prior version and charged them for a minor graphics update with poorly done bug fixes. The suits who decided this was a good idea just need to be fired and blacklisted from the company. And when they did launch, they left out a few quality of life improvements that were part of the original, and then, o fix one of those QoL issues, just addedifferent building to get around fixing their mess up. To…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was on the fence when they decided to relaunch an only 7 year old game. Seemed to me like just a money grab. But because i enjoyed the original so much, and because the discount actually made it cheaper than buying the DLC i was missing, i decided to try it out. Turns out i was right all along. This relaunch is just a money grab. How the **** can you put out a 7 year old game that still has this many bugs? Some of them being carryovers from the old game even. * The train system doesn't…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →♥♥♥♥, people weren't exaggerating, it's the same game with a sepia filter on it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a major fan of the original game with over 1000 hours played and every achievement unlocked, I was very excited for this relaunch, despite the steep asking price. The first 10 hours of playing the relaunched version were exciting, fun and engaging but now that I've had more time to explore the game in depth, my disappointment continues to grow and grow... Pros: - new politics mechanic is fun, adds more replayability, and gives you more options to advance into the late game in interesting…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's the same ****ing game I bought ages ago. Why the **** do they sell it as another game instead of working on the original one. Oh, I know, they just wanted more money from people.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very disappointing. Pitched as a remaster of the old game, when in fact it appears to be a re-bundling of the old game, complete with all the game ruining bugs they never fixed last time. Angry with myself for leaving this in the menu by accident and being unable to refund it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly game is in a bit of a sorry state, and the devs should be ashamed they re-released this game in such a state. I've done 3 different mysteries that have frozen up so you can't complete them. drone/shuttle management feels worse somehow then the original game. and honestly the political system is poorly implemented and frankly kinda annoying. there is really little reason to not just go to dictator every game as quickly as possible. I really like this game it would be really nice…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You pay a premium price to get the same game with MORE bugs. Unplayable in it's current state. If I ever buy another Paradox game again it will only be after it has been heavily reviewd. Avoid it even on sale.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you are one of the people that bought all the DLC for the original game, read the negative reviews If you are like me and never got any DLC for the original game, then this is effectively a massive discount on all of that DLC and a good game for a good price.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is an embarassment for Paradox. They promised an "improved" version of the original Surviving Mars. But instead, they added so many new bugs to the game. Just some bugs that can randomly occur: - Drones refuse to repair buildings. - Life Support Piples do not connect to the tiles next to them. - Ranch does not progress its food production. - Drones refuse to finish certain buildings. I never encountered these bugs in the original game. In addition all the Mods that the original game…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Paradox has pretty much ruined the outlook on this game. The original devs returning to Surviving Mars should have been a triumph. This is an awesome game that deserves a long life of support -- but I've already had to pay for the base game and its DLC *twice* now, like a f*cking idiot. Literally had to buy this version just to get the bug fixes from the previous version Paradox ruined. Don't be me kids, and genuinely do not think about getting this game at least until the dust has settled. At…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This should've been early access. Not only is charging twice for the same game a shady tactic, but the "reworks" aren't really good or relevant and the game is riddled with bugs. Wouldn't recommend the game in its current state at all.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Runs horribly compared to the previous version, they had no reason to relaunch other than that they wanted to sell the same game again. Updates could have just been pushed to the original. Instead, they took the cheap route and relaunched to sell the same game and dlc a second time. Doing this locks future updates into a title you don't own because they made it a separate game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The original game was really good, and as a long time fan, I was ok with the idea of a relaunch including OG base game + all DLCs, with minor new game content. I put some serious hrs into this game and I cannot recommend. Just play the original game instead. This game, which again is a relaunch of a past game, was plagued with game breaking bugs and crashes. Multiple game restarts and frustrating bugs (like trains not working after a patch that was supposed to fix another problem) made me no…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really liked the original Paradox did Paradox and did its best to ruin it. I learned about the relaunch I copium`ed myself into buying it again Unfortunately, Paradox did what Paradox does once again. There is potential, yes But there is also something else WAY TOO MANY BUGS Lost my first THREE runs to bugs. Right now, you should NOT buy it. Wait a few months until, maybe, Paradox allow the devs to fix the game Wait a few months until we know if Paradox will outright kill the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DO NOT BUY NO MATTER WHAT: Promised to fix bugs, lied. almost all the lagacy bugs are still present, game was just copy pasted into a new engine. The bugs in question completely break the B&B dlc making it unplayable (this is unfortunately not hyperbole, literally unplayable) what more is if you engage with these features you will lose hours of progress or a large sum of resources. Nobody should buy a broken relaunch of a game from AAA publishers, if you must play then obtain it by…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I loved the OG game. I really can't recommend this. It takes all the flaws of the original, adds a ton of bugs, including one that means you cant even finish the tutorial... If you can find the OG game, its worth your time. "Relaunched" is a mess, squandering a rare paid opportunity to correct all the mistakes from the OG game on a shameless cashgrab.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is not improved from the original, plus parts of it are broken and don't even work (trains). The graphics are the same. The gameplay is the same. There's nothing worth paying for, and I'm sorry I bought it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolute Dumpster Fire I have not had 1 playthrough yet where I didn't encounter some bug that effected gameplay. There are bugs here from the old version that are YEARS old. This game is a scam. Do not buy it. The political system is awful as well.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Paradox scam as always. Just polished version of the old game with a full game price. Don't buy it. It doesn't worth it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was supposed to fix a bunch of the old bugs.. which is already a bad enough concept in itself because it leaves the original game in a broken state. However, even the promise of the fixed bugs was a lie. People will be homeless despite plenty of living space, people will refuse to go shopping through a passage. The asteroid lander is still entirely broken, it loads what it wants, you cannot tell it what you want it to load, which means it prioritizes WASTE ROCK over everything else. If you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not worth buying. Feels like i spent money on a game fix that should be free in a previous version. Finally i returned the game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First I have something to say, I am someone who owned ONLY the base original and NONE of the DLC. From my POV this is wonderful, I get so much more for a price cheaper than the OG, But I understand how someone would not see it that way so I will split my recommendation depending on your relation to the base game. If you did NOT own Surviving Mars at all, This is still the great game it was all those years ago; I highly recommend you get it and ignore all the reviews about the game being…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Barely an upgrade over the original, the graphics look the same, the politics mechanic could have been another DLC, old bugs have gone unfixed, entirely new bugs got introduced, the Musk glazing was left in, oh and some images have clearly been run through an AI filter. I loved the original, warts and all, even Below & Beyond (mostly) - do not buy this. I wish I could refund it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Despite just being a re-release of a 7 year old game, Surviving Mars: Relaunched still exhibits bugs that range from annoying to game-breaking. Due to the slow-paced nature of the game, most bugs will only manifest well after Steam's 2 hour refund period.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a buggy mess in a state worse off than the original. I have experienced game breaking bugs of which some of them include: - The Last War Mystery freezes at 54% progression preventing importing any materials of any kind forever - Light sources on domes, buildings, and rovers have ceased functioning underground - Colonists in domes disappear on the UI menus despite still working in the dome preventing them from being selected - When transporting tourists home, the rocket with…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you've never played the original, this is a solid game. Highly reccomend. People like myself that started from the original game, have nothing positive to say about this game. Quite honestly, we all feel ripped off. It's literally the exact same game with some new visual asthetics. The diplomacy addition is a joke, feels rushed and incomplete. thats honestly it for new content. No new maps. Same boring planet, with the same spawn locations. They couldn't even give us a new map, and they…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I somehow convinced myself to spend the twenty dollars and get this "relaunch" of a game I have already played, and loved, in the past. I figured that since there were some new things and I had not gotten all of the DLC with the original game, that twenty dollar price tag could be worth it. Upon opening up the game and checking out some new UI things, I have mixed feelings. The change is nice, but I would not say the appearance of the change itself looks that good. For instance, the new design…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Paradox is working hard on joining the ranks of corporations/publishers that poop on everything they touch, even their own property, for the sake of more money right now, sacrificing their reputation and future. Here they are re-releasing the same game, "Relaunched", not remastered/expanded. $40 is too expensive for this game, like all Paradox games it is about 25-50% too much, especially considering they will never release free content like other companies do, everything will be a $20-$30 DLC…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game was advertised as a re-release of SM with all DLC's included and the many bugs fixed. While part of that was true, many of the old bugs remained, along with a slew of new ones, with some new features that completely wreck game balance. I highly recommend waiting to see if the bugs are fixed, and the balance restored.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are just so many bugs. I wanted to love this game, I did a full playthrough and I enjoyed it, but in the end I just got tired of all issues. I checked online and yes, all the problems I have encountered are well known - both in the original and in this version. I'll revisit this review in a year. Hopefully, I'll be able to Build Mars Better next time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game was decent, seemed to run fine. Then i tried to use the naturalists habitat. Broken. Colonists refused to move there, and when forcing colonists to move there i continually got warnings every 30 seconds that colonists are starving even though they had 9.8 food out of 10, and a storage of 200 right next to the building with a plenty of drones nearby standing idle. Late game job assignment system is broken too. Domes with plenty of jobs/vacancy but still getting homeless and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →shouldn't have had to pay to play this game, as I already owned the original ( and identical ) game. at least make it a "dlc upgrade package" ...jesus.. Edit: The game wants me to write another review.... OK! here it is - game has ZERO difference from original game. Dont buy or wipe ass with. may sting after use. full of bugs
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At this point I'm not sure I'm ever buying another Paradox game again. Many of the most basic QoL issues i'm already running into within 15 hours of playing the "relaunched" version of this game are the EXACT SAME issues people have been complaining about for OVER FIVE YEARS. Don't waste you money. Colonist management is horrible. RC management is horrible. Even the mods that were made 4 years ago don't work anymore. Steam should refund everyone who paid for this piece of ♥♥♥♥ called…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DON'T BUY any IP that has to see with PARADOX. Extremelly greedy politics. Previous owners had to pay $20 for almost the exact same game, under the threat of "old version won't be fixed" (Basically, pay me 20 bucks or you'll have a broken game). One week after they added a $25 DLC... couldn't that be added as a proof of good will by the company in the rerelease??? If you buy anything by Paradox you'll end up in a spiral of "Oh, let's expend just a bit more to finally have a complete game"…
