What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 208 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (3,404 of 4,654 positive).
Many players praise the story, soundtrack, and post-game content, calling it a must-play for SRPG fans. [1][2][3] Some reviewers criticize the level cap and buff cards for limiting strategy and fun. [4][5][6]

I LOVED Tactics Ogre in its original form, but this "reborn" version is an absolute abomination. They completely changed the game in so many ways that make it objectively worse. First of all, rather than battles being about strategy and tactics, now a big component of them are these stupid little buff cards that randomly appear all over the map between like every character's turn. They clutter the map up with visual …

Negative review for level cap. It makes no sense. If i want to lvl to make sure i can win, let me do that. Just dumb.

It is pretty funny seeing so many negative reviews complaining about the level cap. Tactics Ogre remains the best tactics game ever made, and Reborn thankfully dialed back a lot of the stupid ♥♥♥♥ in the PSP version and made it more in line with the original game. There's insane amounts of post-game content here, a great story, beautiful soundtrack, great characters, and challenging encounters. Despite Square …

A absolute must-play for fans of the genre. Having played every version from the PSP to the mods, Reborn is the peak of the series. I spent 200 hours into Reborn on the Switch, and yet, here I am buying it again on Steam. The "grand" scale of the story and the constant twists keep you hooked. The best part? The new systems make it easy to specialize your units without the tedious grind of the past. You can finally …

One of the best SRPGs that I played, and I can't reccomend it enough for newcomers of the Ogre Battle Saga series, Tactics Ogre is a incredible well-written gem of a game, with so much attention to detail and care put into it. Every single rival character you encounter has a little biography written about them. You can take diferent routes that do change events and the story in very, VERY meaningful ways. Ten there …

This is a time-honored classic, and a must-play for SRPG fans. Review: www.rpgfan.com/review/tacti...

neutral · AI labelView post →One foolproof trick Tactics Ogre played to sink its hooks in me for life was allowing you to recruit birdman Canopus at the beginning of the game and then let him remain useful until the very end of the game.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have no idea where I got 48 hours first of all, But I have hundreds of hours on the original and I only got a few chapters into this version. It's not bad, but it's made for players who just want to experience the story. There is some challenge, but its the challenge of hitting par on a put-put course rather than building a deck in a card game, either you perform well enough to assasinate the leader or you rewind and try again. The ability to specialize and build units to specializations is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Speaking of which! If you’re enjoying FFT I cannot recommend Tactics Ogre enough. It is such a BIGGER and BOLDER game both in terms of the tactics but also the directions the plot takes. Multiple narrative paths through a really amazing story.

neutral · AI labelView post →As someone who played the original, I cannot recommend this game. The way the leveling system has been reworked removes the part of the game I enjoyed the most, leveling up my team and leveraging that dedicating training to completing more of the story. You are instead forced to work within some arbitrary limit of how strong you're allowed to be. So, if your strategy is similar to mine, I say to you - give a pass on this. For anyone who never played the original game, it allowed you to train…

neutral · AI labelView post →They removed multiclassing, specifically the ability to transfer skills from one class to another by leveling in it. You can't create class combos, like warriors with rampart aura, and casters are very one-dimensional now. This is strictly a downgrade from the PS Vita version of Tactics Ogre. Speaking of old TO, there's a mod called "One Vision" by Raic that adds a bunch of quality-of-life and nice things to Tactics Ogre. Just go play that instead, don't spend money on this crap.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →WOW... So disappointed... My first experience with this game was the version for ps1. I also played the SNES rom translation and the PSP version. My all time favorite TRPG. Here is my main issue with TACTICS OGRE REBORN. They limit everything like your amount of equip-able spells UNION leveling. They basically took the PSP version and made it worse. If this developer wants to help save this game and stop being hated on for adding his own vision to a classic and butchering it they could add the…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (1995) by Quest for Super Famicom. Art by Akihiko Yoshida. The game was a massive succes and Square hired the core members, who became the Ivalice team led by Yasumi Matsuno.
neutral · AI labelView post →Should go without saying: No AI art in my game For a single item, I will: - Model a not-epipen - Make a texture and use thoughts on Tactics Ogre: Reborn as filler text - Pose it like it's a RE pickup - Render it low res - Still draw a 2D icon sprite - Write lore with my brain in Notepad - Implement
neutral · AI labelView post →The original game made me buy this. The original game made me ask for a refund for this. The creator had a great idea: "What if we remove the tactics from the game and replaced it with RNG?" This was the result.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tactics Ogre is one of those series where I love almost every boxart of every version of the game. These are all fantastic.
positive · AI labelView post →(Tactics Ogre Reborn menu screen voice that says the name of the game when you select Start): 🗣️ Tactics Ogre
neutral · AI labelView post →Horizons Gate is a really cool game i got on sale recently that feels like a mix of FF Tactics/Tactics Ogre mixed with Sid Meier's Pirates
neutral · AI labelView post →Seeing a number of responses to FEFW that just want straight up strategy battles, but when games like Tactics Ogre or FFT deliver that, people complain about being really bored and burnt out on them 1/3 of the way through the game.
neutral · AI labelView post →TLDR: A tactics game that obsessively kneecaps the player at every turn with level caps, pre-buffed bosses, and constant numerical disadvantage until any semblance of fun has been balanced away. PROS: ➕ Art style ➕Fully voice acted ➕ Difficult choices that change the story ➕Going back multiple turns to pick different moves is an amazing feature CONS: ➖Level cap is annoying ➖Buff cards are dumb and sometimes frustrating when the bosses come pre-filled with them ➖Game freeze count = 2…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Why would they tie your level cap to story progression?? Also, I played this as a child, and I thought maybe I had some false memories going on but no, I was right, they changed many things that this could be considered a new game outside of the story/characters possibly. I really wanted to like this game and I kept trying it but after 30 hours I can legit say, I'm not having a good time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Seems as good a time as any to play Tactics Ogre Reborn. Something about that game and the gloomy weather that's a real vibe.
positive · AI labelView post →needlessly reworked to the point where character building is just not fun. go play the psp version instead.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This review is aimed at people who have played Final Fantasy Tactics and wondering whether to buy this (I enjoy both). In short, they are broadly comparable - the main difference is that there is a lot more late-game/post game content in TO but that is quite grindy. In terms of mechanics, TO is more of a slow burn and you are more limited in terms of the number of abilities you can equip in battle, but there is more variation in the long run. It is generally quicker/easier to get OP in FFT…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tactics Ogre is turning 30 today - it's not just an incredibly fun, beautiful game that feels as fresh today as in 1995. It also had a profound impact on the whole turn-based strategy-genre and inspired countless other developers since then.
neutral · AI labelView post →Added local multiplayer, which allows free battles that split your units up, giving control of the 2nd team to Player 2. Similar to training in Tactics Ogre PSX/SAT & GBA. Also added ways to hide the menu and even show all HP bars. More below~ #screenshotsaturday #gamedev #indiegame #RPG #game
neutral · AI labelView post →Did pretty much everything there is to do in the game as well as 100%'d the achievements just so I can confidently say this is the most tedious game I've ever played. Some would say the developers decided to respect the players time by adding in a mechanic called the chariot which allows you to roll back your turns a maximum of 50 times per fight. And I say those people are smoking the same ♥♥♥♥ the developers were smoking when they added in said mechanic. Yes, you can roll your turns back…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am one of those people who enjoy over leveling my characters. I tend to play these types of games so that I can watch TV and do battles without really thinking about what I am doing in the battle. I hate the level cap. If I want to grind and over level my characters, that is my choice. That should not be prevented by the developer.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →to everyone complaining about the level cap; On your first playthrough it is not apparent but it is lifted at the end of the game, and post-game you can replay the story at any point where you can make different choices. Your level is synced to that point in the story but you keep your post game skills spells and items. The cap is actually just a very smart redesign that is just poorly explained, and it helps prevent you from powering through old encounters but lets you bring your cool new…

neutral · AI labelView post →From the beginning it's pretty bad. Not the game itself, if you've never played Tactics Ogre this is a perfectly fine experience, but compared to any other version it's really bad. The graphics are smudgy, with the kind of bad anisotropic filtering common in smartphone ports. The problem is that a PC screen is way too big, so everything looks far worse than on a phone (which already isn’t great). The baffling thing is that there’s no filter to change, maybe with different options to let each…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Key art from Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together by artist Akihiko Yoshida. The art is a visual metaphor for the game's interconnected fates, choices, and time-rewinding mechanic; also reflected in the JP subtitle "Wheel of Fate". More art from the game: creativeuncut.com/art_tactics-...
neutral · AI labelView post →This version of the game ruins many of the combat encounters by nerfing the skill attributes of most units and introducing a new card system that adds a lot of fight-deciding RNG to every battle. If you're just here for the story, it's still one of the best ever told in the medium. If you care about gameplay then I strongly advise that you play the PSP Let Us Cling Together version with the One Vision mod.

neutral · AI labelView post →This Random Game Saturday, here is the single GBA game I own running on my newly restored DS Lite. I haven't played, but the original Tactics Ogre is one of the greatest games ever made, and I'm fascinated to see how Quest got on without Matsuno someday.
positive · AI labelView post →I wished I could give it a mixed. The gameplay is a proto form of final fantasy tactics with a lot of rough edges. Some of which leading me to just not be able to recommend it for a lot of people. The story and world building are great. The game is challenging but that's also kinda where the crux lies. But gameplay wise the constant level capping is annoying, especially the game throwing enemies with higher levels than your cap at you feels cheap. The Warren Report isn't clear enough that it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't want to complain too much, but this remake made the game go from one of my favorite games to one I don't even want to finish. The union level cap on your troops is often too low. Your enemies are often far above you level and can one-hit you. They lowered the amount of skills you can choose for your characters. There are some design flaws that are weird ("Defeat the encounter without any characters getting incapacitated and you can get a stronger healing spell... that you obviously…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the best version of this game, allow me to explain... In Tactics Ogre PSP you get more skills, 10 skill slots as compared to Reborn's 4, sounds bad right... In Tactics Ogre PSP in order to "level up" a skill you have to trigger that skill, not once, not twice, MANY TIMES. this means that in the PSP version you often equip a skill the whole game and its still level 1 going into the post game because you never got the skill to trigger often enough to level it up... The skill grind in…

I was a huge fan of the playstation release of FFT back in the day, I never even heard of this tactic ogre before, I guess because I never paid attention to the portable platform this masterpiece was made on back in the day. But again, I waited years to play FFT again, and I was highly disapointed when i was release last month after I played tactics orge. Just stupid how tactics ogre was so much better.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ooh, #randomgamesaturday. Well, Capcom's Onimusha Tactics on Game Boy Advance might be no FF Tactics and no Tactics Ogre, but it´s certainly a perfectly cromulent little tactics-game with a fun setting and nice isometric graphics!
