What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 269 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (41,440 of 73,006 positive).
Some players criticize aggressive monetization, including high DLC prices and a battle pass. [1][2][3] Several players find the game overly offensive-focused, with poor defensive options and frustrating mechanics. [4][5][6][7]

Delusional devs. Each patch buffs offense and adds new moves, instead of buffing defensive. In all other Tekken Games incl. T8 season 1, i had fun even when losing because i knew what i was doing wrong and could learn from these situations. But now it´s the matter who plays more aggressive... It´s not fun anymore playing this game and that says something when a game, especially Tekken, THE fighting is not fun …

Plays like Tekken. I like the roster. Mechanics feel fine. Game is AGGRESIVELY monetized. DLC prices are ridiculous, even on sale, can't even test locked characters in practice. Full priced game trying to shill battle passes. This much greed gets the downthumb.

Treat this tekken like a fun party game. It is not as concise as previous titles, however, it is still fun. Don't focus on ranking. Gain a rank, stay in casual matchmaking until you learn more, then attempt your next rank. It is not a race, have fun.

Tekken 8 is a masterpiece of a video game, fighting game, or otherwise. It isn't even a question of being a fighting game purist, as this is a title that needs to be part of any gamer's library, irrespective of skill level or genre preferences. Tekken games were always about the thrill of combat and discovery, with a memorable graphical and musical presentation and a larger-than-life story mode starring some of the …

The game is fun (especially with friends) and way better than the last chapter, but 30 bucks for a DLC is insane. I mean, if the entire game costs 40 bucks, how the hell can they charge almost the same price for just 4 3D models with the same movesets from the previous games?

53% of the 269 Steam reviewers we collected recommend TEKKEN 8. The complaint that keeps coming up: dLC is overpriced and locked from practice mode. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Tekken 8 received "universal acclaim" from critics for the PC and PS5 versions, while the Xbox Series X/S version received "generally favorable reviews", according to review aggregator website OpenCritic, as well as Metacritic. Several publications argued that Tekken 8 was the best offering from the parent franchise. GamesRadar+ rated it five stars, stating that "proves that plenty of depth makes for a vibrant fighter, justifying its current-gen exclusivity to deliver a skull-thrasher that really feels like an evolution rather than a simple update." Hardcore Gamer praised the game as "bold" and highlighted Bandai Namco's sense of innovation, describing it as "one of the greatest fighting…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Season 3 was the final straw. It’s clear the balance philosophy is no longer about competitive integrity or player satisfaction. Every major patch feels like it does the opposite of what the players want. There are better fighting games out there that actually respect the player's time and feedback.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tekken 8 shaping up to be the greatest fighting game of all time.
positive · AI labelView post →I honestly can’t recommend this to anyone who values their sanity. The mechanics feel half baked and oddly designed. Instead of rewarding solid fundamentals, spacing, and smart decision making, the game often favors constant pressure and button mashing. Neutral barely feels relevant, and the risk and reward balance seems completely off. Skill expression is still there, but it’s buried under forced aggression and endless flowchart strings. Matches frequently turn into chaotic scrambles rather…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I know that Tekken 8 is a superior game to Tekken 7 cause I'm so much more impressed by high level Tekken in Tekken 8 than I was in 7. I'm Tekken 7 I genuinely felt like I had what it took to keep up with pro players if I put in a bit more work. But in 8 it's so obvious how much the gap is

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game itself is fantastic, but as usual, predatory corporate practices muddy what would otherwise be a fantastic experience. Edit: There is truly no way to describe how badly they have fumbled this game. I refuse to believe that there isn't some reason they are purposely sabotaging this game. Do not invest in a half-sunken ship, find another fighting game to play.

neutral · AI labelView post →Fighting games are a huge commitment in time and Bandai Namco have repeatedly demonstrated they don't respect yours. They have lied constantly since the launch of the game and relied on the promise that "It will get better in the future" and "We are listening to your feedback" - but this isn't true. Do not give this team your precious money and/or time. They don't deserve it. You deserve better.

It's like a high-class drug that only ruins you every time you play into its motifs. Whenever I think about this game, I want to put a gun to my mouth. I think they did a good job with Miary Zo as a character recently, which I'm happy for, but I still think they are disgusting for not releasing a major patch in the…

However, if you aren't an old man shaking his fist from his rocking chair, this might be for you. My friends who convinced me to try this all seem to love it, even with the apparent flaws compared to the previous title. Fighting games have come a long way from what I remember, and so has Tekken. This game is incredibly fast paced (I've been yelled at and told that it…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a disgrace to the Tekken franchise. It tries too hard to be other fighting games by taking all of the things wrong with tekken 7 and leaning into them. Tekken used to be a game that you had to practice your combos down to a science, now you can use ults that do 1/3rd of your opponent's health at the press of a button that also have super armor, use a heat meter that adds absurd combos that also do an obscene amount of damage which forces you to use this mechanic or suffer, and auto…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →locking characters that have been in the game since tekken 1 behind a paywall is a crazy decision. feels like a downgrade from Tekken 7 other than that the online mode is fun and mostly stable and music slaps (ortiz farm :3)

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Being a good Tekken player always meant trying to outsmart your opponent. Scrubs almost never beats someone who put in the time and effort to learn the opponents move. Now: -You still lose your turn after blocking 3 different moves of the opponent -Perfect moves are in the game. Mid + Plus Frames + homing + Power crush + Build in evasion + Wall splat -10-15 second combos Gone are the good old days.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hey, returning Tekken player here. Use to play Tekken 3 and 5 in arcade. Love this game but only problem is that I can't practice against DLC characters. At least you can make DLC characters open for "practice mode" so that we can learn to defend against them.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I REALLY LOVE TEKKEN 8 Tekken 8 looks aamazing. Like, really breath taking. Every punch is a explosion every kick is a fireworks. It’s so flash so much that you not sure if you won or you just stared directly into a supernova. They completely change the combat so that defense is now a crime. And the heat system, you activate it, your character goes Super Saiyan screaming "ikuzo" and your opponent dies. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love Tekken's core combat, but Tekken 8 has become exhausting rather than rewarding. Almost every character seems to have some kind of BS move, knowledge check or gimmick you need to learn how to deal with. With 50+ characters, enormous movelists, frame data, safe/unsafe moves, strings, hit properties and matchup-specific interactions, you're expected to absorb a ridiculous amount of information just to understand why you got blown up. Fine. That's Tekken. It's always been a complicated…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Stupid Bamco f*cked up with guard breaks into guaranteed wall splats. The heat system is forcing a player to be aggressive. Not everyone wants to play aggressive. The spamming never stops. Given, It's up to the player skills to duck and launch highs/lows in the strings, but it should have a limit. Whenever you try and look for an opening to punish the mashing opponents, the stupid heat spam comes into to play along with the power crushes. They designed this game to be aggressive and will punish…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →brainrot game, makes your iq go lower. This game is just designed wrong way. You have to be a pro player to learn and use defence, but you don't need to have a brain to do insane offence. Impossible to disengage in a fight without relying on stupid powercrush/evasive moves. Overtuned characters. Devs don't fix straight bs in balance. Better wait for next game if you want to learn tekken, or just play older games :(

positive · AI labelView post →It's fun, but the problem with this game is that the frustrations go above the enjoyment. Don't get me wrong, the game has definitely improved from the disaster which was Season 1 and even more so Season 2. But now we're stuck in a limbo where the game feels like Season 1 and 2 "lite", if you could even call it that. While this game is supposed to follow the concept of "Aggression", which it certainly does. In my opinion, they need to rethink what that is supposed to mean. I don't see…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really can't recommend this game. I'm 48 this year and have played since 1. Tekken 7 had me feeling like it wasn't going to recover; and then they added Lei and characters that brought back the humor and antics. After the third rebalance from the last remaining character dlc, Tekken 7 ended up being a very good game. Tekken 8 leaned further into aggression and run mechanics and more full-motion video supers; and it's not doing the game any favors. Harada has left to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR The devs ignore player feedback at nearly every turn, and will flat-out lie to the players while continuing to make asinine changes to the game that no one asked for, with almost no regard to the balance of the game. In season 1 there were clear problems with the game. Those problems were eventually addressed, and many QoL improvements were made to heat and other aspects of the game. S+ tier characters were rightfully nerfed. Players were pretty satisfied with those changes. It was, from…
