Warning: you should only attempt playing this if you happen to be gifted with the patience of a saint or two. Because, you will be waiting. You will wait for every action you take to play out an animation. Every time you open a door - wait. Every time you take a close look at something -wait. And when all those animations get together for a party, your VRAM will max out, the frame rate will tank and the game will …

This game took me into the depths of a sunken ship for just over 8 hours, exploring every square inch of the ship seeking answers as to why the crew of the ship met their demise. After the 8 hours and solving 100% of the mysteries, I was sad the game was ending. I still wanted more, the game was that good. Highly recommend to play this game in the dark with headphones to get fully submersed in the experience. + The …

A decent but intrinsically flawed exploration game w/ a "mind palace" meta-game. Pros: * Good plot, had a few plot twists I didn't see coming. * Good "unlocking access" design, overall - by the end you're able to traverse with minimum pain. * _Great_ animation quality. * No reflexes required. Cons: * Practices the "freeze the player and talk at them" school of thought. Especially in the beginning - that prologue... …

A truly brilliant game. Out the outside, it's a fairly straight-forward 'walking sim', trying to figure out what happened to the ship Thalassa as you explore the wreck. It leans into the Sherlock Holmes style of mystery solving. However, the narrative of Thalassa: Edge of the Abyss deals expertly with loss, grief, and the complex lives and decisions with which people have to contend. It weaves a fascinating …

I really enjoyed this Indie game. After I saw the first couple of trailers, it really reminded me of the Bioshock 1 and 2's ocean atmosphere. Especially as you walking through the empty water filled halls and passage ways, kind of made you feel like Subject Delta from Bioshock 2. A ship that was once your home is now an empty shell, the signs of life was once there. But now all that reminds is you, the ocean, …

Players who liked Thalassa: Edge of the Abyss talk about excellent story with emotional depth; those who didn't talk about slow walking speed and animations. Which matters more to you?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Thalassa: Edge of the Abyss received positive reviews on Metacritic. RTÉ.ie said it is initially a slow-paced game that requires a lot of backtracking, but the story becomes very affecting. Slant Magazine realized some of the answers to the mysteries before the game would let them solve it. They criticized the use of cutscenes and found the story to be uneven, though they said it sometimes channels the uneasiness of being somewhere one should not be. VG247 said the story starts off slowly, but they grew to enjoy it. They recommended it to people looking for a game that balances complex themes with fun gameplay.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I very much expected to like this, but it turns out the description of the game is deceptive from its very first sentence "Thalassa is a single player, first person psychological drama set in 1905." Well that sounds nifty! 1905 is an interesting era; a decade before WW1, and at the height of the Imperial world built during the Victorian era. But it turns out the only thing "1905" in this game is what the developers think 1905 looks like. There's no historical accuracy, and it turns out it's…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thalassa: Edge of the Abyss is a satisfactory combination of walking sim and detective game, despite a few notable problems. With a clunky start and some believability concerns, it takes a while before the game settles into an agreeable state. While most of the mysteries are easy to clear, there are prominent issues with some clues and deductions. Traipsing back and forth through the shipwreck is more irksome than interesting, despite a few good holographic memories to witness. And with the…

I was soundly beaten but had a very enjoyable game. Lovely miniatures and easy to pick up rules which emulated the chaos of battle well.
positive · AI labelView post →This game is mercilessly on rails and is not really a puzzle game, the only agency you have is in walking on those rails back and forth. The repetitive and painfully slow UNSKIPPABLE animations easily doubled the playtime to help it pretend there was more substance here than there was as you are plodding in a diver's suit for the entire time at 25% walk speed.

neutral · AI labelView post →A first person story that goes over the events related to a wreck. The story can be pretty dark. + Well-written characters with good voice acting. + Really good map that many metroidvanias could learn from. + Some lovely interpersonal relationship. + Good art design and direction. - Very slow animations that are incredibly wooden. - The protagonist doesn't speak, but characters respond as if they did, very jarring. - The "wobble" shader underwater is unnecessary and kind of annoying.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While I'm giving this a thumbs down, it's because of Steam's lack of a sideways thumb. Lots of people like this, so this is clearly dependent on the type of player you are. This is a mystery story that's principally a walking simulator. There's clues to find and piece together, but it's all very straightforward and you'll be led by the nose through most of it. I strongly recommend playing on the easy mode, which only makes it so you don't have to be right beside something to find it's…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has serious performance issues. Issues that are ridiculous because its obviously not very technically demanding. There are CONSTANT stutters when walking around. And they aren't shader compilation stutters that go away when you walk through the same area multiple times....the stutters are always there. There's a constant pop in the audio about every ten seconds or so. The frame rate fluctuates. When turning your character around you can see artifacts in the environment and items…

We play as a professional diver who, due to tragic accident, was forced to leave his ship (Thalassa) to recover ashore. During our absence, Thalassa sank under mysterious circumstances, and now is up to us to discover its fate. Honestly, the story is quite good, believable, and tragic, not to mention the twists and turns. You're sure, that you've figured it out, but then something comes along that completely changes the course of events Unfortunately,…

neutral · AI labelView post →Lovely psychodrama. Very earnest, probably too much so. Took maybe 10-12 hours, my playtime is inflated due to accidentally leaving game running overnight. Pro: - Moody lonely underwater exploration without horror. Okay, there's a *tiny little bit* of horror, but the game works pretty hard to avoid being a horror game as such. - Compelling characters, acting mostly rationally within their limitations and flaws, trying to do the right thing but falling short anyway. - A story that overall…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thalassa: Edge of the Abyss is a first-person narrative mystery that transforms the depths of the ocean into the setting for a deeply personal and emotionally charged investigation. Developed by Sarepta Studio and published by Team17, the game places players in the role of Cam, a diver who returns to explore the wreck of the research vessel Thalassa after a devastating tragedy. Rather than focusing on action or survival, the experience centers on uncovering the stories of the people who once…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was a decent game with a good story... I'm giving it a thumbs up as an "Alright" 3/5 stars, but if you want a solid 5/5 star game in the same genre, try Return of the Obra Dinn by Lucas Pope/3909 Studios. Anyway, I'll start with the negatives and work up to positives. Negatives: There were certain inconsistencies, and unexplained phenomena, as well as more linear-ality than I first expected. For example, you could explore a room on the ship, but not be allowed to examine certain clues…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm mad I didn't buy this on sale. This game really can't be replayed and you can't make your own saves, only autosaves. So, it really sucks when you get to the ending, realize there's a ton of mysteries you haven't solved, and you can't easily go back and solve them. Also, your game is bugged! so you can't interact with any of the clues. Very frustrating. It did seem like it was going to be a good game. But I probably can't complete it unless I want to replay the whole thing and I really don't.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →2/5 - Bad It's a good mystery/detective walking simulator but people should know that this game is deeply flawed on a technical level and they should avoid it. There is constant stuttering when traversing the world which seems related to dynamically loading assets. It doesn't improve even if graphics are low or you reduce frame rate. So right from the get go you can see there's bad programming going on. Moreover, I noticed my VRAM usage was progressively going up and almost used my full…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So I wasn't sure about the game initially, but I Ended up completing it. I'll start with the TLDR: The game has an excellent story. The characters and their relationships, events feel like living breathing people. This is tied together by the great pacing and atmosphere of the game. As a story, roughly taking 5-10 hours to complete, it is worth experiencing. As a game there isn't a lot there however. You could argue it's mostly a walking simulator/story game. In more details: As I…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really liked this game. It does explore themes of death and explores the stages of grief in an underwater environment, which is a game that is certainly unique. There are many games that do express these themes in their own way, but Thalassa: Edge of the Abyss is definitely a game I'd recommend anyone should play. What I liked about it: The graphics were beautiful, especially the loading scenes and the paintings that were scattered throughout the ship. The avatars for the characters.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Boring, shoehorned storyline with an obvious ending, and plenty of woke dogwhistles that had me cringing by the end: The player character is non-binary. The hero of the story is the sole black male in the game, and has "always faced oppression" but can do it all. The white, sixteen year old daughter of the wealthy socialite is in love with the black man. The wealthy socialite refuses to marry because men are bad and she wants to keep her last name. I could go on, there's more…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I get what they were going for, I just feel a little disappointed at the end of it all. Definitely not worth it at full price.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like games where you have to involve sleuthery, but I had no clue what I was supposed to do right at the beginning. The characters were pretty bland. Maybe something about their facial animation that was off. The controls are not at all intuitive in the menus. The graphics are poorly optimised, this game uses as many resources as BG3. Also different walls were flickering white while loading in.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Someone reported me on afkj and my avatar got removed lol There's horrific monsters in the game like Thalassa yet a picture of an anthropomorphic jack-o'-lantern was too much for the general public.
neutral · AI labelView post →I loved this game so much I played it in one sitting!! I really enjoyed being able to piece together all the bits and pieces about the crew and finding out what happened. I had a couple loading issues where I had to wait at a door for the room to finish materializing or else I'd fall off the map and get reloaded in lol but thankfully that was only a few times so it wasn't very annoying. I'm a big fan of melancholic games, so this was right up my alley. I wish I could play it for the first time…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beautiful game/story & with a great exploration of grief & how people cope with certain tragic situations differently. Graphically beautiful & voice acting was top notch as well. Only negatives are for deck owners, which is what I played this on & why my game time is so long. It is not optimized well currently. A lot of crashes & random pop in even on medium or low settings especially when I first started playing that I almost gave up & had to switch to proton experimental as well to get it to…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thalassa is a very atmospheric game. You feel like you’re really exploring a shipwreck deep under the ocean. In that sense it reminded me of Bioshock 1&2 and Subnautica. Keep in my it is very slow paced. It makes sense as you’re moving slower underwater, but it was a bit taxing to summon the patience to get from one location to another. Gameplay-wise it is very similar to Tacoma. I liked that it was easy to find your way around the ship thanks to a map that highlighted…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a really slow paced mystery game, but it's great for passing time and getting lost underwater questioning everything. Plus you can pet the cat, and who wouldn't want that?
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A beautiful "immersive" adventure (pun intended), kinda slow paced and relaxing. The puzzles are not the usual ones, but it is more of an exploration/deduction style of play in this mystery solving story. It can get emotional in some parts, and the atmosphere can be a bit tense, but know that you won't get any jumpscares here, so you can stay chill and play without fear :) The graphics for me are stunning, with an amazing level of details. If one day we got the VR version, it would be…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I highly recommend this game for anyone who enjoys story-based walking simulators. There's nothing distinct about the gameplay compared to other walking sims, but the story is very moving and the atmosphere is absolutely incredible. I finished it in about 8 hours and loved completely.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →All around, Thalassa is a good mystery game with a compelling enough story to keep you charging through the occasional drudgery. I recommend it to people who like narrative and/or mystery games, but you should hesitate to purchase this title if you're very sensitive to slow animations, walking speed, and backtracking. Thalassa did a great job weaving its story into an explorable environment and utilizing modern mystery solving mechanics to keep the loop engaging. The ship itself served as an…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The pacing of the game feels somewhat slow to me and may not be ideal for streaming. The extended pauses between sections can be difficult to get through. While the game has an interesting concept, the overall progression can be sluggish, requiring a lot of reading—particularly regarding the backstories of the ship that sank. This extensive reading may not be the best fit for a streaming environment. I might consider playing this game again in the future, but likely not on stream.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good walking and detective game. It takes a while to get all mysteries solved and can sometimes get frustrating because you have to solve mysteries before the game will let you progress. Sometimes the scenes are a little slow for my taste but as a whole it's a good game if you like this kind of game.

neutral · AI labelView post →Solid narrative brought to life by excellent voice acting. Visuals are nothing to write home about and gameplay is about 70-30 walking sim to standard insert-correct-clue-combo-to-proceed detective mechanics. If you're looking for a good mystery and story to sink your teeth into and have an afternoon free, give this a shot.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its not a bad walking sim, the story does feel compelling and it is quite interesting to explore what exactly happened. However certain "forced" animations felt really unnecessary. They should have either removed it or made it more smooth. Also a lot of the same animations were used, which made it quite repetitive to watch. The ending felt rushed in comparison with the rest of the game, And as much as you will have "closure" it feels still open. Great voice acting; good atmosphere, long…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You explore a shipwreck looking for clues as to what happened. Once you've gathered enough clues for a particular scenario, a message will appear on-screen and you use the in-game interface to put the clues together. It's very well done and I recommend it if you like relaxing adventure games. Took me about 12 hours to complete the first time. The only negatives are occasional stutter and low voice volume that seems unaffected by the settings.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Story-driven with a mystery to solve, almost all underwater. If you had a Titanic phase you'll probably enjoy this one!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A wonderful game with a few minor flaws. I played a lot of the time offline whilst travelling so I think actual playtime was around 15 hours. First the good; I think it has a compelling story, and made me want to learn as much as I could about the various mysteries on board. The setting was outstanding, I feel this is a really under-utilised setting in games over all, and would love to see more of this setting. The ship was big enough to explore and not get bored, there was some back…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think Thalassa is another game where I wish there was a meh option, but on reflecting on it I decided on a thumbs down as it leans more in that direction, because while on the surface it seems competent, I think it fails as an interesting mystery game and as a story that examines grief and moving past this, which are it’s primary objectives. It also has many numerous minor faults that as a whole add up to be deeply irritating. This review will contain some spoilers as it is hard to talk about…

neutral · AI labelView post →This game has an amazing story. It is dark and weighty but I did not feel it was for shock value and by the end it feels really...normal but in a meaningful way. I think a lot of it is the mental state of Cam and his grief. Other reviews have talked about the monotony and the slowness, but...you are deep diving underwater. I am fairly certain you can't run like that. This game is 100% focused on storytelling and I would agree that it is closer to a walking sim than a typical adventure game. I…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very engrossing environment though there is a bit of that 'forced' looping around the gameworld to extend play time. The sequences of the situations at the beginning can be a bit hard to plot out and the timeline is confusing - but that does add to the sense of mystery - you are NOT just pointed in the right direction every time. It does take some detective work! Enjoyed the game and recommend.
