What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 174 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (304 of 328 positive).
Players praise the game's blend of point-and-click adventure with FTL-style management and combat. [1][2] Many call it a hidden gem that deserves more attention. [3][4][5] Some criticize the time limit, save system, and pacing issues. [6][7][8]

Game has a built in end timer limiting your exploration. Combat is much more like Halcyon 6. By the time I left the first area of space did not have material to upgrade my ship nor the money to do so. All enemies ahead already were on tier 2 equipment and had multiple ships so I would instantly get vaporized. Crew seem pointless. They are just a possible card in combat. They don’t join you on ground missions. You …

I was looking for games to play in December and stumbled across this one. Now as a space fan, and an adventure game purist, I was extremely excited...but I wanted to temper my enthusiasm since usually even great concepts are marred even just a little bit by execution problems. Then after a few weeks, I found time to start playing... First I must get this part out of the way. The pixel art is breathtaking. The music …

Imagine Mass Effect... but it's a weird mix of turn-based combat, FTL-like management and travel, and old style point-and-click. Commander Shepard has been aged up a bit - has a wife, kids, even a bald spot. And the game somehow is absurd and funny, while still managing to be epic and serious. I know what you're thinking: "This just sounds like some failed experiment caused by the dev's inability to commit to one …

FTL Meets LucasArts, But the Save System is Stuck in 2006 The way I see it, the creators of this game tried to merge two entirely different genres: an FTL-style roguelite and classic adventure games. Similar to FTL, you whizz through the galaxy, desperately trying to reach Earth before the bad guys do. And just like FTL, you have shops for repairs and upgrades, tactical space battles, and strict travel time …

This is a great game. It has moral dilemmas, fun combat, resource management (time, money, upgrades), solid mechanics and very reasonably priced. If you're Star Trek fan who has wondered how you'd manage the prime directive, if you're more Picard or Sisko, you'll love this. If you understand making the 'right' choice carries it's own cost, and wondered if you'd choose the needs of those in front of you over the …

90% of the 174 Steam reviewers we collected recommend The Captain. The complaint that keeps coming up: built-in time limit restricts exploration. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

negative · AI labelView post →What a game!!! I usually don't like too much point & click games, but The Captain, by its story and its structure, made me love every seconds of it! The fact that it is made of (not-quite-so-)mini-adventures make it really, really fun. Every chapter of the story is so differents, gives so many feelings and tells so much about the world in which the game takes place! The puzzles are never-easy-never-too-hard, the games has a lot of features and secrets really fun to master or find! And…

I don't know, you're just some guy on an automated ship with some really smartass (not in a good way) AI companions, it's trying to be witty, but not the high brow late 90s/early 2000s BBC witty, more like current BBC 'witty.' One of the first tasks in the game is a rescue operation, it's a guy that's been in stasis for a loong time and all his friends are dead, his message says he…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it's criminal that this game is a financial flop! the ear and eye candy alone should make it a stand out hit. Obviously no real marketing was done to help sell this game/idea, because this game is so great! Or maybe I'm just old and remember/love games like this and the newer generation doesn't. But I suspect it's the former. I think this game will stand the test of time and people will discover it one day!

Okay, i like and hate this game. the story is amazing and I find myself wanting to find out everything I can but then I see how long I've been playing and how little I've progressed. way to much time in this game is spent ether walking around or waiting in an elevator. on this one world for example you end up having to go back and forth from a store multiple times to progress to the point it gets insanely annoying. right after finishing that planet I found…

neutral · AI labelView post →This is an absolute gem, combining a Sierra-style adventure game with FTL-ish spaceship building component. The writing, pixel graphics, and the moral choices to be made are all superbly crafted. The difficulty was just right for me at the default setting, and the puzzles are interesting without being frustrating/irrational. Highly recommended for any aspiring starfleet captains.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I assume many folks know Theseus either from the "Ship of Theseus" thought experiment, or the way he got interpreted by the 1st Hades game - which itself always reminded me of what the Captain N cartoon did to Simon Belmont. Honestly I think that last point is what I really wanted to bring up.
neutral · AI labelView post →I'm reviewing this as a public service, because this game has been bafflingly undermarketed. This is a hidden gem. It's not perfectly polished, but it's clearly a MASSIVE labour of love. I'm maybe 2/3rds of the way through my first run after 8 hours (so I can't comment on the late game), and it will absolutely merit a few replays. So far it is unique, massive, and constantly surprising. Gameplay-wise, it's a whole bunch of episodic point-and-click adventures strung together by pretty solid…

neutral · AI labelView post →I haven't played such a good adventure in a long time. Scifi, several stories with different solutions and endings, management, round tactics, Pixelart,.. It really has everything and by that it is very fun to play.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a reluctant recommendation. I fooled myself into thinking this game would be more than it advertised - somehow I believed it was rogue-like, similar to FTL if done by Star Trek. It's not. The Captain is what it says on the tin: a retro point-and-click adventure game, reminiscent of SpaceQuest from the old days. It's much improved from those days - more user friendly, with multiple ways to finish each scenario and ways to choose which scenarios you want. But it's still an adventure…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Another game that gets a thumbs down from me for not respecting my time. Before going into this thinking it is a nice point and click scifi adventure: Even though there are narrative branches, here is no save game option. This means you have to restart from the last autosave if you want to correct any "mistakes" you make. The game wants to be played through several times, and it does allow skipping parts you already did by chosing the same outcome you had, or replay for a different outcome.…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You have to applaud the ambition of making a game like this with a two-man team, and in some ways I suppose they have pulled it off, as evidenced by how many people like it. I didn't, though. The most useful thing to say is probably that I was hoping for something more like a choice-heavy RPG with a point & click interface. This is more like a standard point & click adventure with some RPG elements that, for me, never really came together. I think I probably would have stuck with it if I'd…

neutral · AI labelView post →I really wanted to like this game. The callback to games of my youth, the humor, and the thought that I could have a little ship all my own. But the latter, and the game, unfortunately are so "on-rails" that it removed all suspension of disbelief, for me. To say the game telegraphs itself, is an understatement. Hell, it tells you that you got 1 of 3 possible outcomes for every mission. I get people wanting to try again, but I personally like having a little bit of mystery in my games. There…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want more!! This game perfectly blends the sci-fi and retro adventure genres. Reminds me of Sierra/lucasarts in their prime. You can tell the devs are Star-Trek fans, and some of the in-game stories remind me of STNG episodes. Please make a sequel! Even if i have not yet finished the game.. 😂 110% worth it's money!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unique, Charming and Engaging I played virtually every Adventure game available when I was a kid (Maniac Mansion, King's Quest 1-6, Goblins 1-3, Space and Eco Quests, etc.) and loved all of them. Still, nowadays, I usually get bored and take a break after some 2 hours playing what they now call "point-and-click adventures." The Captain, though, managed to keep me going for 6-8 hours straight, multiple times. This game is rather unique, very interesting and brilliantly executed. It was made…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You ever watch Star Trek? This is kind of like Star Trek. Each planet and each encounter all have their own endings and stories. Some choices don't seem to matter but they really do in the end. It's a wonderful game, with a great sense of humor, and you can keep replaying it to see all the bad decisions you can make.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For someone of my age and someone who grew up with things like King's Quest and Curse of Monkey Island, you'd think a classic adventure game would appeal to me. The lack of save anywhere really hampers my enjoyment, especially since it has multiple routes in different things. Accidentally clicking ONE WRONG BUTTON with no ability to know what was going to happen is a bit brutal when it can happen in your first encounter. Also some of the puzzles are much more your tedious pixel hunts than they…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you grew up loving the 90's Sierra and Lucas Arts classic point and clicks buy this game at full price right now. This is arguably the best point and click I've ever played, and kept me fully engaged throughout my 15 hours of game play. Also nice when a point and click has puzzles that make you think, but actually make sense. There's no combining a fork from hour 1 of the game with a half full tube of toothpaste from hour 10. I had an amazing time playing this game.

neutral · AI labelView post →Scifi adventure, Point and click, turn based space ship shooter, thing. Gameplay: So it’s mostly a point and click adventure game with some turn based space combat tossed in for variety. You’ll spend more time doing the point and click adventure stuff than anything else. Each ‘arena’ has a few endings so there is a bit of variety there allowing for multiple runs. Each ‘arena’ isn’t too long so it doesn’t get too tedious, though there are a few that are a little bit, fetch questy for my liking.…

I'm easily up over a couple hundred games at this point and have hit the majority of the "best games of all time" on all of the reviewers lists. I do not exaggerate when I say that The Captain is one of the best games I have ever played - easily in my top 5. To put it a different way... I received this game for free on Epic awhile back and found it so engrossing, so brilliant and so lovingly put together that I…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think the key to this one is how much time you want to invest in it, and how much you 'need' to re-explore the game to get alternative endings. That being said, the first time I tried to play it, I found it rather bland. The style of the game is of course old 16-bit stuff. If you recall that era, or have a hankering for some historical inaccuracy, then you may be excited by this. The humour also tries to replicate those days, but is hampered by the slow speed of the overall game. There is…
