What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 283 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (3,381 of 4,454 positive).
Players praise the unique contract and market systems that add tension and purpose to factory building. [1][2] Many reviewers report game-breaking bugs that persist despite updates, ruining long playthroughs. [3][4][5] Some players find the early game confusing and the onboarding insufficient within the refund window. [6][7]

This game has potential, but like everyone has said already, the devs are being very shady and not listening to the feedback. Game has many game breaking bugs that need addressed before this game goes into full 1.0 launch and any call out of that if you do on THEIR DISCORD, you get banned. Which is an INSTANT RED FLAG and I probably will not support this developer anymore. Another issue is that this game uses AI! AI …

Do not buy this game. It is riddled with bugs. Just like Surviving Mars, the core of this game is colonist and drones. So imagine that, but now your colonists get stuck and die of starvation. Or drones ignore priorities, leading to resource shortages and cripping your economy. Patch notes keep saying these issues are fixed, but they have never worked. Instead, the devs have been expanding the scope of this already …

PSA: if you’re scrolling through 2024 reviews deciding whether to buy - those describe a game that no longer exists. Drones work. Saves work. 60fps on my potato. The devs answered half the negative reviews on this page with actual patch notes, which is more than most studios bother with. Judge the 26 reviews, not the archaeology.

I was at 1h45m with the refund page open. The first two hours are a wall of unexplained systems and I genuinely did not understand what I was supposed to be doing or why my colonists were unhappy. What saved it: I read a guide, went back, and it clicked hard. Now I get it and I love it. That's a problem, though. The game asked me to do homework before it would be fun, and it did that inside the Steam refund window. …

Coming from ~500h of Factorio and a full Satisfactory playthrough, so calibrate accordingly. What The Crust does that neither of those do: the base isn't the whole game. You're running a business. Signing contracts, watching the Earth market, deciding whether to sell raw regolith now or hold and refine it — that layer is genuinely fresh and it's the reason I'm still playing. If you play the story mode be ready for situations you literally cannot win. In my own play they give me a goal to accomplish, pause the game, send whatever is needed straight to the location. OOPS it's night time, you should have left before we told you that you need to get there, now you can't get there in time. It can be more realistic, you cannot do everything asked of you, but I'm…

Very nice almost 20 hours of run with minimum 100-500 hours more to go for eventually. So pros and cons for you. PRROS: -Vast playability of manufacturing cycles. -Huge management opportunities both drone wise and colonist wise. -Very freaking good voice acts that has heart in it. Feels like im in it. -Very mundane story as of now. Always a culprit and some mystery to…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I play this like a supply-chain spreadsheet with a moon attached and I mean that as the highest compliment. The contract system is the best thing in the game and I don't think the store page sells it hard enough. Committing to deliver a volume of refined material by a deadline, and then having to actually engineer for that deadline, gives every build decision a reason to exist. Most factory games have no deadline and therefore no tension. Wishlist for the future: I want the Earth market to have…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Whoever wrote this character 'Alice' did the rest of the team a major disservice. There is an interesting factory/exploration/colony sim game here that I would probably spend tens of hours enjoying. Yet less than one hour in and I can not stand to spend another second listening to Alice's condescending voice lines. Bad writing can be tolerated. This is worse. The writer chose to make this character insufferable. How sad for the dev team; to have all their hard work marred by one…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is amazing but the bugs are unacceptable for being 2 years old. The same bugs at launch are still here. Colonists will go without pay even thought I have 500k. The power grid will stop working even though I have enough power for 23 days and it was fine the last lunar cycle. Colonists will also stand in front of a fridge full of food and still starve, wont take medicine. These bugs ruin the entire game and honestly I wish I could get a refund since I just lost a 20 hour game to a power…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Review updated on 28th of May 2026 Regardless of my playtime, I can't in good conscience recommend this game. The base structure of how the game mechanics work, and premise regarding why they work that way are very good. The lore itself is also very well made, the whole storyline is well written and your decisions do matter overall. And the soundtrack is outstanding, one of the best I have ever seen. But what is the issue then? The problem is that the game is riddled by game-breaking bugs…

Depending on menu, close might be an X, a back arrow, a minimize button, on the right or left, or a button below If you see a contract and click "I'll think about it", it's gone if you decide to take it. When you tab between levels it always re-centres - you have to scroll back to your position every time There are TWO resource panels showing the same info, and BOTH get covered up by other info panels You need to see a resource panel when buying or selling,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While I really like the idea of the game and its great potenial, i see the following major issues (for me): - overall gamespeed is SLOW, even at max acceleration, it feels like normal speed after a while, still becoming slow - upgrades are not balanced. adding 20% of manufacturing speed to SLOW is still SLOW - production recipes are unbalanced, more advanced recipes are extremely expensive, adding all required production time of previous steps, it is cheaper to sell the sub parts and buy the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can't suggest that anyone buys this right now. I want to, I really do. I've been playing this game for quite a while now. I understand it's in development as well as all the things that go with that. This isn't my first rodeo for playing games in development. That said, after 180+ hrs in, I'm done. I can't understand why there are updates that aren't addressing current bugs that make the current version difficult and and somewhat impossible to play. Don't give me new buildings or research…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do not buy until stable release. The game is promising and I love a lot of concepts it introduces. But for now... You can spend 20 hours in your run to then get an update that soft/hard-locks your progress. I hope though the devs will be able to polish the game!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unfortunately I have to agree with some of the other naysayers about this game. Too many game breaking bugs. And when the entire game is around building complex systems, it can be frustrating. Because you're asking yourself, "ok, did I do something wrong, or is this a bug?" And as any other player with some hours in can attest to, troubleshooting the huge systems you've built when something stops working. (while thinking it may be a bug in the back of your head)....well that's not fun. It has…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So, as with a lot of colony/factory builder games, it has the the usual components, but it's missing a *lot* of QoL stuff. In and of itself, this wouldn't be as big of a deal, but the devs have declared it to be 1.0, but there's significant bugs still, the discord is expired, and the devs have just made it seem like it's an asset flip or something similar at this point where they no longer want to work on it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game itself shows a promising base. Bugs are to be expected, since this is an Early Access release, and the game has plenty. Unfortunately one of the biggest problems is performance currently, but the developers promised an update soon which improves the performance significantly. I don't see that this can be the final performance improvement, it's lacking too much. All in all, up to this point, the review would be a "Yes, recommended, if you don't have an old computer". But then, what is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Edit 10.07.2026 - After recent update I gave it another shot. I must admit the devs improved many things, but also left dissapointingly many issues unadressed. - What has clearly improved: 1, Drone logic and prioritization in early and mid-game. 2, Added some tutorials, also to outpost building, and added a nice warning before triggering key timed event 3, Added new tech, new resources, new mechanics 4, Added nice contract filters (but it could also use reward filtering) - What is still…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As of now, I cannot recommend The Crust. The foundation for the gameplay mechanics are more than solid and the mix between factory building, moon exploration, colony management and contracts is very varied. I see the potential, and if the developers continue to fix things on this before releasing into 1.0 in three weeks, I can see myself changing this review. There are minor or semi minor bugs and necessary QoL features missing at almost every corner of the game. some descriptions and tool…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros: the moon actually feels like a place. Terrain matters, base layouts have to respect it, and the production chains are satisfying to untangle. Cons: my colonists are basically a resource with a face. They consume food and water, they produce labour, they get unhappy in ways I can fix with a slider. In Surviving Mars a colonist had a story that could ruin my day. Here I've never once been surprised by a person. Still recommending because everything *around* the colonists is good. But this…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The dev team did what they said they were going to do and surpassed that by 100%. Great game that will be played for years. I see myself with 1000's of hours on this game and still finding new things to do. Cheers
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is filled with bugs and the dev team decided to implement new features when they didn't even solve the old problems. You can expect surprising game crashes, that your components or production facilities just don't work as they're expected which leads to problems in the gameplay because you're missing certain resources. The game is ridiculously not optimised and if you want your lategame to be from 5-15fps then this game is for you. The game itself has potential, the idea is great.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Game is fun. Fumbling with belts, automate refining and production works good. I've done two playthroughs up until this review and the progress from the first to the second regarding mechs, techs and added stuff is realy good. But the optimization is still bad. After around 25 ingame hours the game crawls down to 22-25FPS for me with my 7800X3D. It seems it's not very multi core optimized since one core get's to 95%, 2-3 others to like 20-30% and the others just do nothing. My 4090 is just…

But poor experience because of confusing controls, UX and UI on PC. - There is no one button to exit menu, lots of menus have their own exit button so player has to guess every time what button to press. - Right mouse button menu is annoying and it cannot be disabled. - No option to remap middle mouse button, or to swap it with right mouse button as I wanted with right mouse button. Which is confusing as you can remap other buttons. - When I plan a conveyors and then…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At first, this is actually a very enjoyable game. I’ve been playing it since the beta, and it clearly has a lot of potential. Visually it looks good, and the story elements are quite entertaining. However, my biggest frustration is performance. Once you reach the endgame phaser specifically the stage where you have to build the laser—the game becomes almost unplayable. My FPS consistently drops to around 10–12, which is simply unacceptable. New updates and additional modules are nice, but I…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has all the elements needed to be a fantastic game, in time I think it will become that game. But, for now, the mechanics, balance, and micro-management required all need significant work. I really dig the notion of playing through a narrative to find out what happens at the outset of the game. The game allows you to take your time to reach each goal to advance the narrative. Nothing feels forced. For the mechanics: it takes too much effort to have colonists, and the game…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have given the benefit of the doubt for over a year, coming back to it time and time again. Its an early access game and it is expected to run into bugs but the fact that every time i try playing i run into a bugs that keeps me from continuing just in the tutorial after a year is ridiculous.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to love this game, I like space, I like tycoon games, BUT. This game is a time eater, each move, especially relocating something, takes a lot of time. Moreover, if you relocate something, you lose time, money, resources, and skipped quests, etc. If you think you will open new tech and then do some new amazing thing, you are wrong - you don't know what this tech actually requires, and you need to remodel, if not rebuild everything. No documentation, not even a filled wiki page.…

The positive: - reasonably good looking - good voice acting - polished UI appearance - a decent-looking and diverse gameplay loop The negative: - insultingly petty and aggravating characters - a story that tries to advance much, much faster than I can respond to any of their requests for action, leading to absurd fan-out of active tasks and constant contradiction between "we're in an emergency, focus on saving your life" and "hey, build a…

negative · AI labelView post →While I understand this game is Early Access, I cannot recommend it at this stage. There are many fun building elements, which I have immensely enjoyed, but at the same time, there are also a lot of "game breaking" bugs which make things frustrating to an extreme. My following comments are not in any order. The Encyclopedia, I presume, is a "placeholder" for a later state of development. In the present state is incomplete at best, and gives no real information. Everything Costs money.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played 20-some hours before I got bored of waiting for the research of the next five things on the tech tree that I need to build the one thing I actually need next. The devs need to look at when you can produce what kinds of resources and re-balance a few costs and re-arrange the tech tree. The biggest problem though is that there's just too many bugs. An early access game should still be a playable game. But this has some pretty bad bugs: the rover scan doesn't do anything - which fully…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game feels like its not complete. There are issues already in the tutorial. Stuff like instructions in the task saying go to "energy" in the build meny when there is no such item (There is one called power though). It feels like something has changed because its in development. Another task could be "press Q and E" to rotade the map, and it doesn't work. Both in this game and in Oxygen Not Included I have a tendancy to start the game, learn a little, restart the game, learn a little, restart the game over and over and over and over again. I am not certain why but I find this a very relaxing and chill way to play games. It's likely due to my AuDHD wanting the chaos of learning, but the optimized perfection of a clean and highly efficient start. I expect that I…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not a bad game in itself but I can't recommend it right now because it is riddled with bugs and balancing issues. It is actually quite hilarious how bad the game balancing is when compared to Factorio, Satisfactory or Dyson Sphere Program. The devs seriously need to stop the content updates for a few months and concentrate on fixing this game. Also, it seems you need either a discord account or a Veom Studio account to get support/report bugs which is really bad. There is, at least, a…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is going to be a weird review. I find myself playing for hours, it's pretty relaxing and I dig the whole moon base thing as a fan of Output and Outpost 2 from when I was a kid (elder millenial here). When I stop playing I can't help but think "am I even having fun? if this game isn't fun, why am I playing it?". I like the concept, the game in general, but there's so much lacking at this stage. The contracts system is wild and a huge chore, the new auto-sell feature isn't intuitive to use…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →GenAI images piss me off and while I tried to check before buying for the AI disclosure, I swear I didn't see it before and now it is on their page. The actual mechanics of the game are interesting enough, but seeing art and asking myself why is there this varying quality in presentation and inconsistency is draining. I pray the devs fix this with time, because I already have 3 hours on record and I am interested in progressing
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I hope they add a mode like Godhome to Silksong. I would love to do the Crust King gauntlet all over again without having to go through almost the entire game to get to it. XD

Just add the setting to remove her completely, at least from sandbox mode. I will play the game more of course and might change my review to positive since I really like the concept, but so far, just because of the Alice, it's a NO...…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I greatly appreciated the asthetics and the factorio feel the ease of progression. the only thing i would add is a way to control/throttle upstream resources so modules downstream can get an equal distribution. a new conveyor splitter or like the multiresource storage but with more functions. if it were a separate module that the previous mention. it might make an interesting change. but overall 5 stars
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Having played this game for over 1,000 hours now I can confirm that this game is absorbing, challenging and rewarding. It's central theme is "mine and build" but goes far beyond that with storyline tasks (nothing too serious, just saving the entire Earth!), trading and exploring. Still in early access I've seen the game evolve through bug fixes and new features with active developer support and well populated forums, and yes the developers do reply and act on the feedback from the gamers. I've…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Actually really fun. It can sometimes put pressure on you due to the contracts feeling more urgent than they actually are but in truth you can take your time with most of them and those that are really urgent are giving you a clear warning. I have been playing for several hours now and so far it has been a lot of fun. Thumbs up from me. Especially if it's on sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The first play through has been a bit rough simply because of not knowing what researches will come up as the campaign progresses, but that's a me issue not a game issue. The game overall has been a blast pushing production to its limits and getting to a point where its less just make it work for now to making builds future proof have been great! Only complaint I have is that there is no copy and paste feature at least between machines would be helpful when setting up new production sites for…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hey I'm a 15 year old playing the early version of the game, I do not have the best specs for this game I'm on 60-40 fps on low Graphics but the fps isn't the most important. the story, the freedom and the graphics are beautiful. It's a great game but not perfect. I have been able to learn more complex words and my grades has increased because of this game in English, Physique's and chemistry. I highly recommend this game :)

The crowed about going to full release, talked about their extensive testing, and proceeded to let loose a game save breaking defect in their "patch." No route to a fix, just "try a save from two days ago and hope for the best." Terrible, just terrible. The game is too grindy. The early days are just too slow and annoying to even continue starting over.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ive finished the game twice, it lags towards the end. However, its one of the most fun base building I've played. And despite being in "early access", the dev have shipped big improvements since I've started to play. Every few months, there is a new big update. I highly recommend the game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Now don't get me wrong, this is a building game which really scratches that itch, but I cannot get over the glaring fact that even though the game is in EA, the FPS tanks dramatically as you progress and build more and more conveyor belts and storage. It's all great having 180 FPS at the start with just the one drone and 1 storage placed, but that's not the entire point of the game now is it and for each conveyor and large storage built, your FPS ticks down until your at sub 30 FPS in game,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So, i played this game for a while, so i'm gonna give it a recommendation. But just as a fair warning: this game is a mess. my fps were <20 for most of the game. while my rig aint the top of the line anymore, its still plenty high all things considered. and the system was - expectedly - completely idle despite the terrible performance. so yeah, this game is in dire need of actual programmers to look at the code. not just for the performance though, also for the countless bugs innit. like eg…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unfortunately it took me more than 2 hours to learn that this game should still be in early access and request a refund. Between inaccurate tool tips, tasks to research things that don't exist in the research tree, and finally a time sensitive quest to "land the rover" that provides absolutely no way to "land the rover", I was done. Since I'm stuck with the game now, maybe I'll revisit it after a few patch cycles. I suggest you do the same before buying.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →released waaaaaay too early. still a buggy mess with awkward controls. sad that they don't seem to listen to community feedback and work on pointless topics like flashy cut scenes and voice over tutorials instead of solid game mechanics. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm going to say "not now" on this. I'm hopeful that the developers will continue to work on it, and it may be a good game eventually. Right now it functions as a game. All the pieces seem to be there, and I didn't encounter any bugs as others have mentioned. However, the biggest problem is the game balance. The progression doesn't make any sense right now. The campaign and the missions/contracts in sandbox go from like 1 to 100 almost right away. There needs to be a better ramp up so…
