What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 297 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (53,042 of 70,555 positive).
However, widespread performance issues, including stuttering and memory leaks, are heavily criticized. [1][2][3] Some reviewers allege Bethesda abandoned the game after a few patches, leaving bugs unfixed. [1][4][5]

The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Remastered is amazing. I haven't been this addicted to a game since The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion. If you've never played Oblivion before it's a 8/10. If you've played Oblivion before and enjoyed it, it's a 12/10. The worst thing about this game is that it's actually good and I don't have the time to play like I used to. I am a father now, my kid needs me but also Tamriel, I’m torn!! …

Amazing, just like the original Oblivion, with smoother mechanics and welcome improvements. Unfortunately, some there are some performance issues, and no mod support. Even so, it’s a must-play for any gamer that never enjoyed the original experience.

Abandonware. Bethesda / Virtuos slopped this on the storefronts, released two small patches that fixed hard gamebreaking bugs and then left the game in a completely unreasonable state with very harsh frame drops, many bugs and glitches and accelerating degrading performance the longer you play / the older your save file becomes. Do yourself a favour and DO NOT BUY this game and DO NOT BUY whichever remaster they …

I'm trying my hardest to fully complete this game, but with the amount of stuttering and shader compilation B.S., It's not looking too good. This is one of the worst performing games I have ever played both visually, and technically. I need to preface this review by saying that I love this game. I love this world that Bethesda has created. But everything that you've read about the poor performance is true. After reaching a certain point, the performance absolutely falls off a cliff. It stutters, it lags, and becomes genuinely unplayable. It doesn't matter what kind of hardware you're running. It's a problem with the game itself. What's more …

43% of the 297 Steam reviewers we collected recommend The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. The complaint that keeps coming up: poor performance with stuttering and frame drops. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered received "generally favorable" reviews from critics, according to review aggregator website Metacritic. OpenCritic determined that 87% of critics recommended the game. The game won "Best Remake / Remaster" at the 2025 Golden Joystick Awards. GameSpot's Jake Dekker praised the visuals as establishing "a new standard for Bethesda RPGs", and also highlighted the character models and the handling of original game elements. Dekker additionally commended the revamped leveling system, although he found the combat "still rough". The game was criticized for performance issues. Digital Foundry's Alex Battaglia found Oblivion Remastered to be "one of the…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While I do love Oblivion and am a big fan of the graphical improvements, the fact that Bethesda dropped this at full price then refused to fix any performance issues later shows it was just a cash grab. The game is poorly optimized, unnecessarily heavy, and riddled with more bugs than the original game, and all Bethesda did in the past 7 months was introduce a difficulty slider. If you are gonna buy it, don't get it at full price.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →still no performance fix a year after release they took our money and abandoned the game
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →April - 1.0 release June - 1.1 patch July - 1.2 patch August - nothing September - nothing October - nothing November - nothing December - ???? I had to stop playing as it kept crashing at a certain quest. Unfortunately, the game is now essentially abandonware. It's a real shame as it's otherwise a pretty outstanding remaster, just plagued by performance issues (or the HIV that is UE5.)

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just optimize it please. Can't even play it well with the lowest settings and frame generation on. Actually started playing the original one cause it just runs better. :( ( I also tried playing it at 720p or less and I get around 60fps which to me is just barely enough )
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →We are 4 months since the last update and performance is still abysmal. I would not regard this as an acceptable state to leave it in, but that seems to be what Bethesda has chosen to do.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've done so many playthroughs on the original and I was really enjoying the remaster. Problem is there is a memory leak. After 30ish hours my save slows down to a crawl. Loading between cells takes over two minutes and combat is unbearable. I'd really like to recommend this game, but I can't.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'll go ahead and give this game a negative review, too. Did I enjoy it overall? Yeah. It made some decent improvements to the game, and a lot of frankly unnecessary ones, too. But I cannot recommend this game due to the bugs that are still in this game after release. Bethesda/Virtuous released this game with more bugs than the original, and they have not solved a majority of them over a year after the release. It's completely embarrassing, and another mark on Bethesda's permanent record.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's despicable that this game is verified on the Steamdeck. It's on the verge of unplayable with the awful frame rate, even with settings turned to minimal. It was a waste of $48. I can't even play it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love Oblivion, but I do not like this remaster. It introduces more bugs than it fixes, it eats up a whopping 110 more GB than the original, and for every thoughtful design change (such as the tweaks to leveling to address The Leveling Problem), the devs made two more annoying or obtuse design changes (most notably in the UI and menus, by adding additional submenus, requiring additional keystrokes to access crucial stat information, or removing much-needed organizational subcategories in the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Devs released a patch last year shortly after launch that killed the modding community and then abandoned the game entirely. I decided to wait a while and came back to it a year later expecting a better experience only to find out there hadn't been a patch since the one that broke most mods. which was literally like the second patch. If they'd at least kept up with the game even without fixing the issues that broke mods, I could live with that. But it's been a year since last patch. It's…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loved the original, so even with the bad optimization warnings, I figured "how bad could it really be?" Turns out, pretty awful. Around the 20 hour mark, performance completely falls off a cliff. The memory leaks are brutal, forcing me to constantly restart the game just to clear them and keep it playable. The Z2 Extreme should handle this with zero issues, but bad optimization ruins the whole experience. Nostalgia isn't worth having to reboot every hour…skip it until they actually patch it.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Feels sad they ditched this game left without fixing the performance issues
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I do like how the Remastered version kept the charm just like the original game did, and the graphics are well displayed too. I think the combat is great and the price is somewhat fair. However, the main issue I have with this game is the poor optimization and the lack of mod support for the game. Considering this runs on Unreal Engine 5, which is infamous for poorly optimized games, it isn't surprising to say the least and hope there will be future patches to deal with the optimization.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The fact that this game sits at a "Mostly Positive" review score with a €60 price-tag proves that consumers are willing to gulp up the most abominable slob and pay a premium. This is a warning to anyone reading to be very wary of your consumer mentality - especially in a world where the "standard" is continously degrading (Not just for video-games) - Perfomance: is a disaster. Constant stuttering. Only with optimization mods made by the community is this even slightly playable. Even then, the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Straight up rug pull in disguise as nostalgia. Not a single bug fix and no performance updates after all this time is insane work. Game fails to work anymore, and the recommended minimum specs are an absolute joke. Game ran semi normal the first couple months and now its unplayable. Dont waste your money, just play the original.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a conditional recommendation. I recommend the game if: 1 - It is 50% off. No matter what, it is not worth full price. 2 - If you have played the original Oblivion. If you are like myself and spent thousands of hours with the original, it will be a fun stroll through memory lane. Standing near the swamps at night and seeing Masser and Secunda slowly drifting through the skies in 4K and HDR is undoubtedly a vibe. More thn the new textures, I think the new lighting improves immensely…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Comparative review between Remaster and Old Version. Pros: - Looks better. - Passive health regen out of combat. - Sprinting added. - Better levelling system. - Better combat animations. - Removed player staggering. Cons: - Physics changes made almost every trap in the game slow, anticlimactic and ineffective. - Power attacks are pretty awful now so melee combat is just light attack spam. - Runs very poorly (unoptimised) - Old bugs haven't been fixed and several NEW bugs have been introduced.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Whatever update they did last ruined the performance for me. the game even lags on the main menu, when previously I was able to play the game at an acceptable level. Unfortunately I can't get a refund with over 100 hours played. Game's abandoned.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is amazing but the stability issues are real and the optimisation is a joke . don't pay full price buy on sale
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The performance on this game is horrendous. All the bugs from the better part of 20 years ago are all still there. Almost as though they copy and pasted the exact game and just slapped UE5 onto it. I would love to re-experience this game, but it is not even playable. The amount of times I crash is just ridiculous. To put into perspective, I am playing with a 9800x3d and a 5080 with 64gb of ddr5. My pc isn't the issue. This game is not optimized clearly. What a waste of time. Edit: I have had…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This possibly the worst running game released by Bethesda. Ive never seen a more unstable framerate in a game. Stalker 2 ran better than this game currently does when it launched. It feels like every time I try it regardless of mods the performance is worse every single time. If the Fallout remasters are anything like this its going to be a nightmare for Bethesda.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This might be the Bethesda game with the most devoted and nostalgic fanbase. So some of us might have expected Bethesda to feel pressured by that, and actually deliver a quality product and price it fairly, but that obviously didnt happen. While it was fun trying out Oblivion in new colors and detail, this game runs poorly. I dont know what it is that makes it so demanding, because it certainly isnt a visual masterpiece. I also experienced a lot of bugs. First of all, they for some…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Devs abandoned this game never optimized it basically just robbed people. Waited a long time hoping they would release an update and i literally still cant play it to this day. So sad how they treat elder scrolls.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Another game abandoned by Bethesda because they want modders to fix their mess of a game
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this game for myself, but then my wife kept asking me if I was playing "Skyrim 2," and I had to explain that no, Elders Scrolls 6 is permanently delayed, but she realized this might scratch the itch of "Skyrim 2," and suddenly this game became her game. I had to stop using my steam account for a while and play playstation or just read, because the Steam account became the family Oblivion Remastered Machine. I've put like 20 hours on this, but the other 78 belong to my wife, who made…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →tl;dr - Serious hard-locking bugs that are unacceptable in a remaster. I have a very negative impression of this release. The whole point of a remaster is to modernize a game for newer hardware and systems. In terms of art direction, Bethesda succeeded. In terms of modernization and stability, this is a complete failure. After the first time you run it, changing some of the graphics settings (presumably generated-frames setting, but it's hard to be certain) causes the game to hard-lock on…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Abandonware there are still glaring bugs and performance issues they updated the twice after release and now we are getting close to one year without anything and now that they are releasing their broken game for Switch they have no choice but to patch the game what a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ joke
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First of all, to be able to play it with an acceptable framerate and without stutters, you are REQUIRED to use the .ini tweak from Nexusmods. ( nexusmods .com /oblivionremastered/mods/35 ) Due to the nature of Bethesda's Creation Engine, which loads the world in chunks (think of it like Minecraft), the engine.ini tweak, as well as Frame Generation, have to (re)load into the game whenever you switch chunks. F.e. Entering a city, Entering a Tavern, running around outside between one chunk and…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Oblivion was my first Elder Scrolls game. It was one of my favourite games of all time. And so, when this game was released, I was too eager. I jumped to buy it, expecting that even if it had some issues at launch they would get dealt with. I was a fool. They have done nothing to fix this game. It is a buggy, poorly optimized mess. It had so much potential, but they decided to abandon it like a month of release and nothing has happened to it in over a year since. And now they are porting this…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A good game from 2006 trapped in a mediocre product from 2025 Let me get this straight, this is not a review of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion itself. That game earned its praise almost twenty years ago. Its quests, atmosphere, music, and sense of freedom were already there back then, and they’re still there now. This review is about Remaster only. I played the original Oblivion a long time ago, on a weak PC. It struggled. There were stutters, moments where the game clearly pushed…

I've worked so hard to make it playable on either my very nice laptop or very high end, nice desktop pc. I've read tons of walkthroughs, used engine.ini files from the mod nexus, modified my graphic settings in game and on my PCs, I've updated drivers, done TONS. I got the game to run on high settings at very high FPS, 90-100 on average, but the game will just randomly GPU…

I immediately went to the arena to become the Grand Champion like I always used to do. Then I found my blonde fanatical follower waiting outside for me. Of course I told him to follow me so I could lure him somewhere secluded. After I murdered him to join the dark brotherhood (as always), that's when the issues started. The game crashed. I restarted,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're an Nvidia user, force a higher version of DLSS in the Nvidia app. If you have an upper midrange to high end card, this will solve most of your issues with the game. This game REALLY doesn't like the version of DLSS that was shipped with it. It also doesn't like Hardware RT. My entire system also freezes randomly if I leave that on even though I don't hit the VRAM limit. Sits around 9GB. Still the occasional stutter in the open world, but doing this made it so much better. My game…

Instead of focusing on making the game better and more modern, they just changed the lighting and textures - which would be great if it didn't just highlight all the issues of the original game. Don't get me wrong, I love the original Oblivion. The lore of any The Elder Scrolls game is a masterpiece, but we aren't rating the story here since this is a remaster and it has the exact same story. The reality is that the core gameplay simply hasn't aged well. The…

It's pretty congruent with the original with most of the original glitches still there, which proves how hard they tried to keep the game as faithful as possible while porting it over to a new engine. Yeah, about that last part, the new game engine, Unreal Engine 5 is the problem. How bad is it you ask? I get an average of 60 fps outdoors maxed out, on a 5080. In 1080p. On Fedora 44, however, the game runs smoothly—much like *Oblivion*, but with excellent graphics. It doesn't crash, and performance is better.
