A truly obnoxious survival horror game that takes pleasure in torturing you. Don't get me wrong, the story is really cool, the atmosphere is top tier, and the horror is glorious. The combat is also fun and rewarding at times, however! Don't celebrate just yet. What ruined this game for me is the ultra annoying boss fights, and a few areas that have hideous difficultly spikes. I played this game back in 2014, I hated …

The story is weird, the monsters are horrific, the ammo is always running out, and half the game feels like a fever dream. It's clunky in places, but the atmosphere is incredible and some of the creature designs still live rent-free in my head. I don't know what was happening half the time, but I was having a great time being terrified.

After 160+ hours and unlocking every achievement, here’s my honest review : The Evil Within is the best horror game out there, and to this day, nothing has come close to its level. It should be the benchmark for horror game developers. It’s a shame the series stopped after the second game.

Very underrated, ignore the "It doesn't make sense it's just random scenarios reviews," it'll make sense if you play the game for more than the first 3 chapters. This game isn't just a Resident Evil Clone, it is technically a hybrid of RE gameplay and Silent Hill Storytelling with a lot of heavy inspiration from them. Gameplay wise it's very simple and dated, but if you aren't a total Redditor Nerd who only cares …

The Evil Within is a great game, but it's not for everyone. The Evil Within has so many disturbing visuals that it will make you feel sick, both mentally and physically. So, I will reccomend The Evil within only if you're a fan of horror games and lots of gore.
Summarised from 34 of the 364 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 10, 2026. How summaries are made
Players who liked The Evil Within talk about incredible atmosphere and art direction; those who didn't talk about poor optimization and technical issues on PC. Which matters more to you?
Critics, per Wikipedia
The Evil Within received "generally favorable" reviews from critics for the Xbox One and PS4 versions, while the PC version received "mixed or average" reviews, according to review aggregator website Metacritic. Computer and Video Games (CVG) described it as "the game Resident Evil 5 should have been", although they were critical of some technical issues. VideoGamer.com liked the gunplay and horror, but disliked the story and its pacing, stating: "The Evil Within has enough magic to make it a worthy investment." Destructoid said: "[The game] will definitely scratch the itch of someone who has been pining for a return to the older days of gaming, but everyone else who has come to expect that…

neutral · AI labelView post →3. The Evil Within 2 I've got a lot of love for the Evil Within games, the first game wasn't amazing, but it was one of the first modern Survival Horror games I really loved since the PS1 era. The second was a big improvement, and will always stick with me.
positive · AI labelView post →Some games leave you with memories of the journey. Others leave you wondering whether you ever truly made it out. The Evil Within is one of those experiences that makes it difficult to trust anything you see, hear, or think you understand. From the moment Sebastian Castellanos arrives at Beacon Mental Hospital, the world begins to fall apart in ways that never quite make sense. Places change, reality slips away, and every answer seems to lead somewhere even darker. What makes this game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Evil Within ended up being a game I sorta managed to get through, with some serious effort, I still kept getting anxiety spikes with it, but I played with an extremely detailed walkthrough and could only manage it for short 20 minute or so sessions at a time before it got so bad I had to stop.

neutral · AI labelView post →First of all, this game has issues on modern hardware. It has a broken frame limiter which reduces the framerate regardless of hardware. To fix it you have to add this "+r_swapinterval 0" command to the games's launch options. To do that, open you steam library right click the game and click on the Properties tab, and paste the command (without "") in the Launch Options box. This fixes the frame limiter however the game still has stutter and bad framepacing even if you limit it at 60. To fix…

That game had a sort of mini open-world, a town location you traversed and visited more linear sections, and this does something similar; We have a little boat with which we explore and travel to and from set locations.
neutral · AI labelView post →I love this game and am one of its biggest knob slobbers. It used to run pretty fine on PC. I don't know when it happened but now it's often nigh unplayable to the extent of it flickering and crashing before the main menu. Ch. 8 end hallway. Additionally, locking poison and incendiary behind pre-order without any way of getting it is pretty lame.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do Not Buy The Steam Version Of This Game!!! The game was not made to work on certain PCs at least that's what I've been experiencing with it. For some odd reason this game doesn't run well at all on modern hardware and the developers never initiated a patch for it. The black screen of death is very common in this game and user's have reported a whole list of issues in it. Should have been called "The Broken Variant"

neutral · AI labelView post →Doesn't run on modern PC's. After the first start, the screen begins flickering every time I try to start up the game and it gets stuck trying to load. While it's in that state, it's impossible to ALT + TAB out of the game and my monitor's resolution turns to 800x600. Only way to fix things is via the old reliable Task Manager. Apparently there's fixes online like downloading third party software and such and while I'm not opposed to fixing up older games, I shouldn't have to try and fix a game…

At first, I thought this would break the game, but nope - I completed the entire game without any issues. I’d also recommend upgrading sprint to at least level 4; personally, I consider it a must-have. As for everything else, you’ll figure out along the way what feels more important and useful to you. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Allow me to preface this with saying that should you beat this game on any difficulty, I will personally consider you a top tier horror game player. Half of the horror from this game comes from the jank, and not in a bad way. It can actually feel like a challenge, and the more you learn about the game, the better off you are in the end. The game of course has plenty of ways it can be exploited, though even with the exploits, you’re never too far away from getting sent to last checkpoint. The…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game! I was a bit worried with how scarce the resources are but the game really provides everything necessery. The effort to make this game rich in new areas is also something to be commended. Lore is uniquely disturbing and the whole setting is a grotesque nightmare. That being said, the only thing that I can find lacking is some sauce to the characters, but that's okidoki.

But once I hit chapter 10, this game started testing the absolute hell out of my patience. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Evil Within is a horror survival game that is about an investigation of what seems to be mass homocide at Beacon Mental Hospital in Krimson City, but things turn out to be much more deep and sinister than what all of this comes across at the beginning. positive · AI labelView post →First playthrough review time. The Evil Within is an old school survival horror game with slow and somewhat heavy controls. The game has a dark atmosphere, with ruined buildings, old medical areas, rusty places and damaged surroundings. The locations have a style that can remind you of older survival horror games. The pacing is mostly medium, so there is usually something happening and puzzles are present but quite rare and mostly simple. The visuals still look good in many areas. The…
