Players say The Executive is a solid but shallow movie tycoon game, often compared to Game Dev Tycoon. [1][2][3] Many find it fun for a short time but lacking depth and replayability. [4][5][6] Some reviewers note the game feels incomplete and has received no recent updates. [7][8][9]

I like Game Dev Tycoon and similar games, so when I saw the negative reviews comparing The Executive to those games, it didn't do much to sway me. However, those comparisons are unfair to Game Dev Tycoon. At initial glance, this is a good game. Other than the "tutorial" which just spits out walls of unnecessary text where a few words would suffice, it has a decent UI and feels well-polished. Unfortunately, once …

As someone that loves Game Dev Tycoon and was looking for something similar to play but for movies, this game really fulfilled that itch. Gameplay is really addictive, and it's fun getting to unlock and experiment with different features and combinations. Cross analysing trends for genres/themes and carefully planning your release window provide an additional layer of strategy that I really enjoyed when producing …

Pretty fun to play for a day or two, very reminiscent of game dev tycoon. Although I would say game dev tycoon has much more replay value. I got to year 2001 on this game and I've done enough to be satisfied with it, after the mid 90s there's really not much purpose to continue. If you're looking for the next addiction to sink hours into, look elsewhere, but if you want a cozy game to put about 10 hours into and …

Game Dev Tycoon but with movies. While it is a little complicated at first, I seriously think it's a good time waster. and tbh I think this game is better than Game Dev Tycoon, The review system doesn't feel like random RNG and instead feels like I actually have control over the movies I'm making. This isn't the best Tycoon ever made but for what it is, it gets the job done.

A tentatively positive review: this is a very by-the-books Game Dev Tycoon clone. It has better presentation than GDT, but isn't quite as complex, which is a shame. If the developers should expand or release a sequel to this game, they should include unique elements to movie industry such as streaming services, signing multi-package deals with talent, directly buying competing studios, broader franchise synergy, …

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A bit disappointed by the game. I'm putting this as a negative review as I know most people playing this genre will gravitate towards more complex games, and this one is absolutely not one of them. 1. The gameplay loop is extremely simple and very repetitive 2. You can finish the game fully in about 5 hours 3. There is a lot of randomness, some mechanics which are unclear It's fun to play once but has nowhere close to the replayability of other games in the genre. If this game was in early…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not for me. Very very limited, no real logic and no real gameplay. Its very shallow and I won't even call it a tycoon game. Its a mobile game for killing time, not a pc game for having fun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very easy game with no sense of progress or achievement. Was very excited for it, but did not live up to expectation at all.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Update: The devs just announced the game will receive no further updates, so only buy this game for what it is Pros: - Okay UI - Nice Sound Effects - Seemingly balanced reviews system - Buy IPs - Lots of Research Options - Nice art style - Unique way of assigning Directors, Actors etc - The Distribution stuff is cool - Lots of options like Sequels, Prequels, Reboots and Spin-offs What Needs Improving: - There is no option for Game Speed, the game currently feels way too fast as I'm 30…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has some really nice features, it has good systems and that makes me even more frustrated. The potential is there, it could be great, but I don't understand why more and more games do what this one is doing, the objectives system that unlocks options. Instead of being free to play, that makes the player have to follow a path similar to what every other player will follow. Yes, the game has a sandbox mode, but it offers unlimited money and everything unlocked. That's silly. Why not…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game has a decent gameplay loop, but it still feels incomplete and in need of additional polish. I had fun at first, but once you make your first billion in‑game, there’s no real goal left aside from achievement hunting — and some of those are a serious grind. As of this review, the last patch or update was released on July 25, 2025.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →ABANDONED GAME Go play Game Dev Tycoon instead - even though its not about movies its fundamentally better. This game falls flat and feels only like bad RNG for if your movies succeed. Plus support for the game has disappeared (8 months since last update of any kind). It's worth MAYBE $4.99, not $14.99

neutral · AI labelView post →I know Tycoon games are a dime a dozen, but this one left me pretty unsatisfied. Movie production simulators like this seem to have a big problem demonstrating exactly how the pieces fit together. Why with a top-rated director, with a top-rated actor, with a big special effects budget, does a movie bomb and get high critic reviews and low audience scores? Who knows? After tinkering with some of this variables in "The Executive - Movie Industry Tycoon" it sure doesn't seem to make a bit of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very linear game, not many choices to make except to follow the path laid out and unlocking things takes some time all the while rival companies are always ahead of you. Nowhere near as good as Mad Games Tycoon 2, my bar for games like this.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly feels like just a reskin of game dev tycoon. It's fine enough if you don't have game dev tycoon yet and prefer a more 'movie' feel to your gameplay, but I wouldn't recommend it if you already own game dev tycoon. bought it on sale and if you're interested i think it's not all that bad a deal when it's on sale
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The movie tycoon sim game has been done so much better, many times before. It feels like a student project that was worked on to get released. It does not have deep gameplay. It is not very challenging. It has some good ideas but the overall game is lacking. It scratched the itch for a new movie tycoon sim. Would only recommend for 5€ or less

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun Consept, Terribly boring Execution. The game is far to easy even on very hard. If you have played Game Dev Tycoon, it's the same but worse somehow. Little to no depth what so ever.

neutral · AI labelView post →I really wanted to like this game, but it's very simplistic. It's more like a matching game than anything else. Combine various categories to make the most money. From making the movies you earn research points to expand your selection. There's no real variations besides to pick high scores across the categories especially when you unlock worldwide distribution. If you want to find a more robust movie making game, you can try The Movies or Movies Tycoon. It's 15 bucks if you want to give it a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're a fan of the "game dev" tycoon game/genre, you already know what this game is...and that's not a bad thing because you're a fan of this genre! Simply put, this game is a reskinned Game dev tycoon genre spinoff with a movie theme, which feels to be about a +2 match. Full playthrough of 1970 to the "end game"" of 2020 was only a few hours (you can continue to play onward but no score is recorded), but replayability is very high in this genre imo There are a ton of missed…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its nice but Game dev tycoon already had this mechanic. It feels unfinished here.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While I can recommend it as I like such tycoons, be warned: You have to use guide or grind for few hours to research good matches. Even then, at the start you will earn couple of millions even with 10/10 movie. And couple of millions is small amount of money in this game. Going to mid level too early will doom your run even on easy, so start game on easy. It is challenging enough on easy. Overall you can feel that it was made with love, but budget cuts and some strange design decisions make it…

neutral · AI labelView post →Its a reskin of Game Dev Tycoon, but with much fewer features.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mad Games Tycoon about movies. Fun, but lacks depth. A family Christmas comedy in december, a romantic movie in february, some B tier horror here and there - and you’re set for life. Who needs awards when you’re printing money? Actors are just numbers on a piece of paper. A 70 year old lady can perfectly sell a teen romance, you can’t make Harvey Weinstein your producer or shoot a movie for a pack of bagels. The lowest possible budget is 2 mill, which isn’t exactly THAT cheap for 1970
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a decent game, but Hollywood Animal is much deeper. Within 6 hours I've already achieved half the goals and it could've been more if I would've tried. After 3 or so hours it gets very grindy.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's alright if purchased on the cheap. Game Dev Tycoon and Mad Game Dev Tycoon 2 are both far better products. This one is too reliant on RNG. It's not bad, I'd still recommend it if you can find it for less than $8 or so. I like the concept. I just wish it was balanced better and went the extra mile.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →❌ Not Recommended (Half-Baked and Left to Cool) As a filmmaker and tycoon fan, I really wanted this to be good. The idea of running a movie studio through the decades sounds amazing on paper. In practice, this feels more like an unfinished university project that somehow made it to Steam. The first 30 minutes are decent. You pick genres, assign staff, release your movie, make a bit of profit. Then you do it again. And again. And again. Nothing ever changes. Every movie feels the same, the…

neutral · AI labelView post →pretty good, however seems to be dead. no updates since July 2025.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game, just a little undercooked. Another review mentions signing directors and actors for multiple movie contracts for the purpose of making series and cinematic universes, which the game seems to want you to do, and I believe that feature would be an incredible addition for immersion, especially considering the game's choice to use parody names for real movies and actors. I do also think the flexibility of genres is too rigid when using two different genres, considering the actual movie…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good idea but simplistic and very repetitive execution. There's something interesting in there but so many other tycoon/management games that are doing much better that it's hard to recommend.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the worst Tycoon I've ever played. No gameplay variability. You start the game one way, and by the end, you're still doing exactly the same thing you did at the beginning, but only spending more money. Plain awful and considerably expensive considering how shallow it is.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Worth trying out on sale. I bought it at 35% sale. I suggest you wait for 50%. I play on Very Hard because that's how banks work IRL. There are also easier difficulties where you pretend you're born into wealth or somehow the apprentice of a wealthy Hollywood figure who's willing to invest in you. The presentation is great: cool art, nice ambience, Simsy BGM, UI is stylish. The gameplay itself is hard to describe. It's quite engaging in the beginning when you're a small studio, but you soon…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nice little game if you like the cinema genre. I knew it was not a "The Movies" successor, but I missed it so bad that I wanted to try this game. It has a somewhat similar structure, be a producer, make movies, get rich. The game has a decent base, with a little extras it could had been much better, but mainly its a clicker. Starting from 1970 to present day, it is short in length and does not feel different whether you survive the years with the studio or go bankrupt. There are not really…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really wanted to like this game as the concept is exactly the type of movie game I was looking for. In essence, this is a clone of Game Dev Tycoon with a tad more complexity. In execution, I ground on the small office cycle for 10 in game years, won two "Romy" awards for best picture of the year, and still couldn't make enough money to be net positive. The grind of this game feels like it was meant to be a free pay2win cell phone game with no resources available to actually improve. I was…

neutral · AI labelView post →Working for the film industry, I both loved the little nods to film culture and was also triggered by the many challenges of the industry. Giving your all only for people to hate your film... Life is tough, man. I only wish I could better understand why my decisions in the game, that were often studied and well thought of, still gave random results. Do people not want foley as a "feature"? All movies have foley... I'd also like to be able to change things around the office, and to have posters…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Abandoned game, don't even bother.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is proper chill. Easy to play and have fun with. If you like management sims and movies this game is for you. It's not breaking down any walls so keep expectations to a minimum but if light hearted fun is your bag then you're good to go. Great for killing a few hours if you're waiting for that next big release. Start with nothing, build up your multi billion dollar company, manage staff and create movies. I like it. Recommended.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not a bad game per se, but it offers no complexity and depth. After roughly 5 hours there is nothing new to unlock anymore and offers no new gameplay. I had fun for those 5 hours it offered, but not worh it for the full price that is asked for the game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Executive – Movie Industry Tycoon, developed by Aniki Games and published by Goblinz Publishing and Maple Whispering Limited, is a unique and witty simulation game that immerses players in the fast-paced, cutthroat world of Hollywood film production. Set in the vibrant and ever-evolving landscape of the movie industry starting from the 1970s, the game puts you in the role of a studio executive tasked with building a production empire from the ground up. Through a blend of strategic…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very casual, lacking depth and extremely easy. Missing lots of mechanics - if you’re looking for something deeper, Hollywood Animal is the better choice. Still giving it a positive review, since it has potential to grow, but right now it’s nothing more than a simple, casual and super easy game to pick up.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really enjoying this game. Deeper than other games in it's genre, but not too hard where it is unplayble.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you’re a cinephile or a fan of tycoon games like me Game Dev Tycoon, The Executive offers a compelling sandbox to explore your inner mogul. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s a solid, well-crafted simulation with enough charm and challenge to keep you hooked for hours. Tutorial gaps Some features especially in pre/post-production lack clear guidance, leading to trial-and-error frustration. Visual simplicity The aesthetic is functional but minimal; NPCs lack faces and environments are…

neutral · AI labelView post →It's a fun enough game. It isn't super deep and you tend to run out of things to futz with after a certain point, but it is fairly fun for what it is. It's a lot like Game Dev Tycoon but the research system doesn't feel too grating. The fact you can work on multiple movies at once is a massive step up from others of the Tycoon genre where you have to do things one at a time. The ancilliary market also propping up my studio is a nice feature since you don't have to worry about making sure…
