What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 179 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (678 of 783 positive).
Players describe it as a casual, relaxing resource management game similar to Virtual Villagers. [1][2][3] Some note it lacks challenge and is best for short, chill sessions. [2][4][5] A few criticize the slow pace and lack of speed-up options. [6][7]

The game could be good, but there are 2 huge minuses: 1) There is no speed up setting. The gameplay is slow and strict, so you must just wait often. Its getting boring very soon. 2) The game pauses if you use Alt+Tab. So i can't increase the speed of the game and i can't to do other things while my peasants are working. The game forces me to just wait and watch. I don't think that these are the things that i like in …

The Promised Land is a casual strategy game similar to the Happy Hereafter and Virtual villagers, you manage a settlement with a bunch of settlers. You train them to become workers or farmers and they’ll be faster and less easily tired. You’ll unlock all the parts of the map by accomplishing a series of tasks. You have to manage your resources either by picking it up on the map or by making it yourself. Food can be …

Get it if you: - dont mind the old graphics and slightly clunky controls - want to chill out and dont strive for big challenges This game is a "scripted colony builder" game with a very satisfying progression and a very unique artstyle. Every playthrough will follow the same progression with the same predetermined building locations for all facilities. It is nowhere near the freedom you get from games like Anno, but …

Cute cartoon style graphics and animations. Relaxing game, not frantic at all. Farm, build, trade and fight pirates. It is quite addictive, I found myself playing from breakfast to well past midnight. You can complete it in a few days if you wish but you can drop in and out any time you wish. Saving the game is automatic so you never lose your position. I've played it through three times now and I'm still looking …

Casual town-building game from Alawar studio. Good cartoon visuals, mild music and relaxed gameplay. There's zero challenge for hardcore gamers. There are no steam achievements. And you can't really lose that game. You just gather resources, build new facilities to be able to gather and produce some more resources, to be able to build more facilities... until you finally climb the mountain and open the ancient …

83% of the 179 Steam reviewers we collected recommend The Promised Land. The complaint that keeps coming up: no speed-up option, making it boring. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Of course. I also know playing the game of bouncing between the two to play at technicalities is the Promised Land of Professional Take Havers but ultimately just meant to further reduce the real struggles of real people into abstracts and semantics

And though it still looks and sounds OK, you're also older and wiser, and realizing not all your childhood faves aged like a fine wine...it's just fine.🍇 Full Review: www.rpgfan.com/review/rivie...

neutral · AI labelView post →For random game Saturday I’m posting a favorite that’s not so random! This is Riviera The Promised Land which is getting a re-release this week for the modern consoles. It’s great. Awesome soundtrack. I suggest it.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A short city buiding game. This is just a time waster game where you assign your villagers to do things and build stuff to get enough supplies to upgrade houses. It happens on all on one map. I don't recommend it due to the one map thing...and it gets repetitive...it is fun, the first time you play it, but after that, it gets boring. I did have fun with it though...
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →#RandomGameSaturday - Riviera: the Promised Land, Sting's original RPG with gigantic in-game character portraits. Join Ein and his companions as they take a journey to the coasts of southern Europe for some much-needed R and R* *either that, or it's about Ragnarok or something
neutral · AI labelView post →Fun, chillax-ing time management game. Just keep your cute workers fed, assign them their preferred jobs, and watch the game play itself. It reminded me of the venerable Dwarf Fortress sim game. The game designer did a nice job with the quality of the simple UI, and I am going to stay on the look out for their other games. The game is played entirely with the mouse (although it could have used some keyboard shortcuts) which shows it was created for mobile devices. I played with the Steam Proton…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was a hidden Gem. The game sort of reminds me of a settlers type of game without the battles. It's a fun and casual city builder. The game also makes you think a little. I would say only on sale pick it up and give it a go if you like these sort of games. I enjoyed it and that's all I can say.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I dig this trend. Riviera The Promised Land. Was fun working on this localization back when I did video game QA work. It was and is a hidden gem of a game.
positive · AI labelView post →DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS GAME IF YOU HAVE MAC IT DOES NOT WORK
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →GREAT GBA #VIDEOGAMES TO TRY 2. Riviera: The Promised Land The first game in the Dept. Heaven series, Riviera is a unique RPG set in a world inspired by Norse mythology. It plays almost like an isometric visual novel (complete with dating sim!) but plunges you into battle regularly.
neutral · AI labelView post →5) Riviera: The Promised Land This game is almost single handedly responsible for a lot of my aesthetic tastes and some of its systems were an influence for gameplay features in my own game. Also the music rocks.
positive · AI labelView post →Riviera The Promised Land for the GBA. -Solidified my taste for RPGs and anime aesthetics -Made me realize I love non-standard game design -First game where I noticed I love game soundtracks -My first "dating sim"
positive · AI labelView post →August #TrashCart game is early: Riviera: The Promised Land (GBA, PSP, Switch). A weird, beautiful 2005 RPG, part visual novel, part dungeon crawler, with item battles and QTEs. Play however. Retroachievements set. Streams on Wednesdays. CW: suggestive content, loss, self-sacrifice, memory trauma.

I hope it will run for a long time, much like Coriolis which was launched in the same manner. Wish us luck! #grogsquad

For behold, this game is a wondrous creation, a masterpiece of gaming that doth bring forth all manner of blessings upon the player who partaketh in its gameplay. The graphics are sublime, the music is heavenly, and the gameplay is as addictive as the fruit from the tree of knowledge. As I played, I was transported to a land of milk and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's slow and not very deep, but there's something very zen about this in my opinion. I would not buy it for the normal price of 6.99€, but for a 90% summer discount it is pretty great.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If the game had the ability to speed up game-time, or if the ceaseless prompts did not pause the game, I would have no hesitation in recommending this game. It would be a charming little village builder, with almost no replayability. As it cannot speed up game-time and the prompts do pause the game, I cannot recommend this - unless the prospect of sitting in front of your PC for ten hours, doing nothing but watching numbers slowly crawl up, is something that tickles your fancy.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very very slow.

positive · AI labelView post →This one is fun oooh 1) Suikoden V (very underrated) 2) Octopath Traveler II (new, but a modern classic) 3) Final Fantasy IX (also a classic) 4) Pokemon Yellow (ugh the cutest game ever) 5) Riviera: The Promised Land (very cute and so fun to play)
positive · AI labelView post →I am 32 years old. My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old. When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoyed this game more than I thought I would. Very casual management game, but fun! The final puzzle was great, and the angry birds mini-game was... interesting lol. Finished with all in-game achievements in 11 hours.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A low-key resource gathering economy game. Definitely casual. Set up a and manage a colony while in search of the 'Fountain of Eternal Happiness.' in what seems to be the renaissance era. Since it was not my first game of the genre, I found it a little boring. But probably if you never tried something like this before, you'll definitely like it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's an okay game, I have issues with the problematic representation of Native Americans, though. Makes me cringe every time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For the price if you are into these types of games it's a no brainer.

neutral · AI labelView post →Show me that weird game no one played that you love. Riviera: The Promised Land. An RPG clearly designed by aliens who had never actually played one before, everything about Riviera is unique, and strangely compelling. It may not be the greatest RPG ever made, but you certainly won’t forget it.

neutral · AI labelView post →I ran the first chapter, The Promised Land, mostly off of Roll20 but transitioned to FoundryVTT because I could purchase game assets there. The second chapter, The Mark of the Beast, went smoothly & the players seemed to enjoy it but I could not load an Animated Map- a key reason for the change.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really enjoy playing this game. I had it back on BigFish years ago and loved it then too. It's a cool adventure that works at your pace yet has quests to do within time limits to challenge you. The graphics are great and it's not babyish like some games. The pirate games are awesome when you just want to have a bit of change of scenery while your workers perform a task. Overall 10 thumbs up!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →different strategy game give this game a chance trust me
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Adorable little city builder. I wish there were more casual games like this one for when I need to not murder anyone.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A dull but functional casual game on rails. You need to manage your settlers to juggle production so that you can produce the next item on the list. Since you don't make many decisions (nearly everything needs to be done in a pre-determined order at a pre-set location), it's pretty easy and straightforward. Ultimately, if you want a strategy game that requires minimal thinking, this might be for you. I really enjoyed the little character animations and graphics. The game seems well balanced…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an OK game, but does not save between computers, and is quite time intensive. It is like an idle game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's just a clicker game with extra steps. There's no fail state. You just do the next upgrade when you have enough resources, which will generate slowly on their own but can go faster if you do some micro stuff. Pure progress quest.
