What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 179 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (3,329 of 3,780 positive).
Players praise the unique blend of Slavic mythology, card game, and survival strategy. [1][2][3] Many find the game highly addictive despite its complexity and steep learning curve. [4][5][6] Some reviewers criticize forced DLC integration and lack of manual saves. [7][8]

This game had the potential to be one of my all time favorites (5 stars) as it ticks every box I like - turn based, exploration, character (and town) building, awesome story... However, one thing absolutely ruins the game. The *idiotic* decision to integrate the "Return of the Giants" DLC into the main game and not allow players to disable it. Basically, you will have a fantastic 4x experience for a few hundred …

A potent mix of slavic mythology, a weird card game and “we have civilization at home..” makes for a highly addictive brew! First of all, just to make it abundantly clear. I love Thea! This game is a great example of a project that really shows how much care and love the developers poured into it and even though it stumbles on a few aspects. Personally I really enjoyed my travels in the weird otherworldly lands of …

Its hard to gauge how good the game is. Id recommend it overall, it does posses many BUTs tho. Do not play if you are perfectionist, or ADHD cursed. Good: - inovative systems, something new, - good story, elements, - variability - replayability (its ment for you to die) - unbalanced skills, which incetivizes you in decision making Bad: - owerwhelming, timeconsuming crafting. - too random. the game heavily relies on …

Maybe it's the blend of Slavic folklore with the gritty dark fantasy art or the choose-your-own-adventure style encounter format, but something about Thea keeps me coming back to play all these years later. Here's the best parts of what this game has to offer: 1. Gritty, dark fantasy-style artwork drawing from Slavic folklore 2. Narrated gameplay similar to having a game master or DM narrate your ttrpg choices 3. …

How have I just got around to playing this? They've taken elements of city builders and card games then mixed in a bit of strategy with just a dash of exploration and rolled it all into a rogue-lite that not only works, but all the parts come together to make one really addictive whole! If your into any of the genres mentioned, I'd strongly suggest you give this one a shot!

Thea: The Awakening sits at 78% positive across 181 opinionated reactions from 2 sources. Fresh or rotten — where do you land?
Critics, per Wikipedia
On Metacritic, the PC and Switch versions received "mixed or average reviews". Rob Zacny wrote in his review for Rock Paper Shotgun that he was initially excited by the game's use of multiple genres, which avoided many cliches of strategy games. However, he later felt the game was "a large collection of small ideas" that excels at nothing, and the gameplay, which he said can be addictive, is ultimately unsatisfying. Mark Steighner of Hardcore Gamer rated the game 3.5/5 stars and wrote that it "starts off strong before collapsing under the weight of its systems". While praising the Switch version of the game for having "some really great ideas", Nintendo Life critic Dom Reseigh-Lincoln said…

There are lots of stats to fiddle with and lots of undocumented rules to uncover. And it was cheap on sale! But.. you know. You have to spend hours grinding every run. Walk all he way over the map to get food, walk all the way somewhere else, stand around "gathering" forever, walk back again, etc. And there are no saves. death is permanent. Stuff you need is…

You play as a deity of your choice (minor math based differences between the different selections). You are controlling people in a village. Each person has a class, and tons of stats. The stats inform a multitude of different skills like stealth, speaking, distraction, strength, etc. Each of these characters are going to be leveling, equipping gear, and taking part in challenges.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Currently my favorite game of all time. The story and general feel are just wonderful; you really get into the mindset of a mystical, danger-ridden world that has barely reawakened. If there was any negative I could say its just that there's not enough story events that I can play this every single year (instead I have to take a couple years of a brake so everything feels fresh again). Strong recommend.

You think you're building up to something then bam, your entire team is killed in a natural disaster or surprise attack by someone way more powerful or something. I was playing on regular difficulty. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →100% complete as of 20 minutes ago. This game has been sitting in my inventory for a while, and truthfully, I'm glad to have played through it. Some of the achievements are boring and grindy, but the vast majority you get from just playing. It's a game that's fun for a few runs (and the runs can be long, most take around 400 rounds to finish a Giants Ending) but quickly burns out after a few play-throughs. By the time I was done, I was quickly becoming bored - but now that I have…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →With Thea finally completed, I feel like I can give a fair and full picture of the game. Summary: 8.5/10 Thea was an odd journey and a long one for me. Early on it changed drastically by revamping many crafting recipes, then went on to be refined with many free updates, but despite more events added over time, it never truly filled the time it set out for itself. Instead the community had to pick up the mantle alas with far less heart often times and less detail for ancient slavic lore. Even…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Totaly forgot how awfully stupid this game actualy is. For whatever degenerate (sorry there is no other way to describe it) reason the devs thought, in a strategy/tactical game it is more challenging when there is no save and load at will. There are not even multiple saves for various playthroughs. Saving at some point, then starting over, and somewhen coming back is not an option. You start a game and play it through till the end, and when you start another game, the old save is lost and…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Having 59 available stats for each hero (=villager), 9 challenge types (fight is one of them) which use different combinations of stats for various real stats (like which stat is health, shield, offence, turn order), and late game expeditions with tens of villagers. Impossible to plan for anything except the fight, and even then you don't care much about each hero details, it's just too much to get through hundreds of stats in total. And the challenges/fight, while simple and boring, requires…

neutral · AI labelView post →Gave this multiple tries and still can't really find the fun. I like the slavic mythology, cool names for the characters, but there is weird unnecessary complexity in the UI and combat system that overall just prevents me from enjoying this title. Shame, as you can see a lot of work went into this, just not with enough thought about the new user experience, I guess.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's okay-ish. The game itself is fun once you get the hang, but it's quite complicate, the tutorial is overwhelming and it can be quite frustrating at times. It could have eased the player much more gentle into the complexity, instead you're just thrown into the cold water. The events don't leave a lot to experiment, as they seem all very one-dimensional and predictable. Do the good thing and you receive your reward, do the bad thing and you usually lose something major. The mediocre…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a hidden gem. The individual components of the gameplay are well-crafted, and feature inventive twists on what is usually seen in these sort of games. They function smoothly together and make for an original experience. Add in enjoyable party management, solid (often amusing) writing and a granular difficulty system, and it was enough to…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thea is such a unique mixing of different genres it's incredible it pulls them together into something cohesive. As an adventure story game, the writing is among the best and frequently with a great sense of humor. It's even entirely voice-acted, which is a surprise.
